The author Neal Stephenson said, that Unix has more similarity with a saga than with a conventional Operating System: The Unix ideal was reinvented often, always with new changes. Those which were considered good were made part of the mainstream. Those, which were considered bad were forgotten.

Linux is not in this category because it has its own.
