Technical details

OS^3 was a timesharing system for the CDC 3300 computer developed at Oregon State University. It supported batch and interactive users was operated by a wide variety of students, who were charged by hour for access to the system.

Character details

General

OS^3-tan is depicted as a somewhat short and thin - but surprisingly strong - woman with medium-length black hair and orange eyes. She generally dresses in contemporary 1960s clothing with a business-like twist - wearing her hair tied into a high bun, an orange sweater, pencil-skirt, pantyhose, flat shoes, glasses, a ledger and pen behind one ear. Her work involves teleconferencing, and as such she is often on the phone.

Character-wise, OS^3-tan is often likened to a stereotypical librarian. Quiet and reserved in personality, she may come off as meek at first glance but is actually rather stern and demanding, being particularly fussy in matters of time and money. Unusual for an academic timesharing system-tan, she charges users for her assistance by the hour. As such, she is extremely punctual and keeps excellent track of time and work done, and is not afraid to simply quit working if a user hasn't paid up or charge a user even if they haven't done any constructive work with her (as she might say, "They shouldn't have hired me if all they wanted to do was slack off!"). This serves as a contrast to the majority of academic OS-tans, who are generally more laid-back when it comes to interacting with students.

In spite of her seeming uptightness and tendency to talk down to non-academic types, she is maintains a mutually appreciative and congenial relationship with her users and students.

Family and Relationships

Although she never actually lived with the CDC Faction, she is considered a part of their family. Although there is no documented evidence that she and SCOPE-tan are related, she considers SCOPE to be something of a mother-figure.

OS^3-tan gets along well with her fellow academic OS-tans, excepting, perhaps, those of DEC origin or alliance.

History and Background

General

As is usually the case for a college OS-tan, OS^3-tan was created at her university, Oregon State. Although she had minimal contact with the CDC-tans in her youth, she considers herself a part of their faction, a feeling that appears to be mutual. Sometime in the early 1970s she traveled to the midwest to participate in battle against the IBM- and DEC-tan factions alongside her CDC kin.

She is presumed deceased today.

Theories and Notes

OS^3-tan's color scheme references the school colors of her university.
