Technical Details
UMES is based off General Motors Operating System, but modified for smaller student tasks, as a university OS. It is the predecessor of MTS. It was the original system the MAD programming language, also designed by the University of Michigan.
Character Details
UMES-tan was similar in appearance to IBSYS-tan, but had blonde hair, and their fashions diverged somewhat, UMES's outfits had more of a winter theme to them, and often wore fur hats, boots and a scarf with her dresses. She also had some resemblance to her younger sister/successor MTS-tan. but was less flashy since she didn't travel as much or get as much widespread attention.
She had a subtle sense of humor, mainly directed at her operators, referencing that if an operator's compilation under MAD failed, a line portrait of Alfred E. Neumann would be printed instead, and she was an avid reader of Mad Magazine, as the MAD language was named after it.
History and Background
Although of an IBM OS lineage, UMES-tan was not raised in the early IBM society, but instead had a background in education and working with college students, work she dedicated her life to. She mainly lived in Michigan, but also traveled to work with CTSS-tan, who she was a contemporary of and a friend to, as they worked closely together on joint MIT/UM projects in the early 60's.
By the time her sister MTS was created, she was in her last throes, as the UMES computer systems got shut down around the time of MTS's creation. She lived just long enough to meet the young MTS-tan, and felt resentful for being replaced while dying, but chose to reconcile with MTS-tan in her final moments because she felt it'd be better than dying bitter and alone like BESYS-tan did.
