Ultrix was DEC's first offering of a (BSD) Unix OS, designed to run on PDP and VAX architectures. Developers had long used DEC hardware for designing and running Unix operating systems, yet DEC supported only their proprietary OSs, especially VMS. While somewhat successful, Ultrix ultimately failed to displace competing VAX systems.

Ultrix-tan is depicted as a young woman, with wavy brown hair and green eyes. She sometimes dressed in a slinky black dress; but often wears a military-like uniform as with the other DEC-tans, yet is a noted outsider in their group (as supporters of the home-made DEC operating systems and Unix supporters have often been at odds). This rivalry also carried over to her attitude; She is quite sly and cool, with a notable feisty side; When angered, however, she has a tendency to become quite vengeful (a reference to Ultrix translating to avenger in Latin). Her weapon of choice is a trident, with three blades where the spears would usually be; a reference to Ultrix's BSD heritage.

Ultrix-tan's relationship with her step-sister, VMS-tan, is filled with rivalry and antagonism from both parties. There is usually a tone of lightheartedness, however, as Ultrix never could displace VMS as the most popular DEC system. But it should be noted her relation with the the other DEC Unix, Digital Unix-tan, is no more better; as she took over for Ultrix-tan in 1995.
