UnixWare is a proprietary Unix server OS from Novell, but was owned by SCO Group from 1995 to 2011, and is now developed by Xinuos.

Character Details
UnixWare-tan is depicted as a woman with long light blue hair with a long side-bang, rectangular glasses and a grey + purple gown. She is a smart and calculating warrior with a strong desire for success as she was born out of a need to make her company more successful in the server OS market. While she comes off as likable and friendly, she has had many failed collaborations because she is regarded as too grating, pompous and war-like to get along with.

She despises Windows NT-tan and it has been her ambition to end NT-tan's dominance of the server OS market. This is out of a personal hate of the Windows Family and to avenge NT-tan's attacks on some of UnixWare-tan's comrades. She also once deeply disliked her stepsister SCO Unix-tan and the two would often battle over who was the truest descendant of Unix, referencing SCO and Novell fighting over who owned the Unix trademark. However, when SCO bought out Novell, they gradually grew to like each other, and accept each other as the truest descendants of Unix. She is affiliated with the Linux/Unix Consortium in the OS-tan backstories.

Technical details
Windows 95 can trace its roots back to March 1992, right after the release of Windows 3.1. Microsoft was stil developing Windows for Workgroups 3.1 and Windows NT 3.1, with their future sights set on the Cairo Operating System. However, Cairo was not expected to release for another two years, and in the meantime Microsoft realized that in order to keep competing, they needed an OS that could handle 32-bit capabiities and preemptive multitasking while still running on low-end hardware (Windows NT could not). Thus, the 'Chicago' project was born, being expected for a late 93' release, becoming known as Windows 93. Windows 93 would eventually ship with MSDOS 7.0, offering a more intergrated experience, but the Chicago Project continued on. Released at the same time was 'Cougar', a 32-bit shell for MSDOS; Cougar would go on to become the kernel of Chicago.

95 was released to great approval, quickly dominating the computer market. Part of this reason was the campaign to promote it by Microsoft; A commercial featuring the Rolling Stones' song "Start Me Up" and a 30-minute promo video (a 'Cyber Sitcom' as it was called) featuring Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry were just part of the advertising. In addition, several new features made 95 much easier to use for those new to computers, such as the Taskbar, Start Button and Menu, Longer Filenames, and Multitasking. 95 was also the first Microsoft OS to be a standalone, more than merely a graphical shell for DOS. Despite this, the 32-bit kernel, and the incompatibility of 95 with 16-bit processors, a good amount of code left over (mainly for the user interface) was still 16-bit.

95 was normally offered on a CD-ROM, though the inital release was also offered on 13 3.5" floppy disks, suitable for older machines(though with added features removed). The later releases doubled this to 26 disks, and Plus! was also adapted for floppies. Though uncommon, a 5.25" floppy disk set for installation could be special-ordered.

By the time of its obselence in 2001, 95 had become an industry standard, with many of the features introduced in 95 still being used today. 95 could be upgraded to 98, ME or even 2000, though many users still rely on 95 for legacy functions due to its closeness with DOS while still being reliable and easy to use.

Character details
One of the more popular OS-tans, 95-tan is depicted as a traditional lady from the early modern era of Japan. This is much due to her status as an older version of modern Windows. She is a gentle-looking brown haired woman in a kimono, with a hair ribbon showing the four Windows colors. The pattern of her kimono is based on the file hana256.bmp, which was used as a desktop wallpaper pattern in the Japanese version of Windows. Her costume is a traditional kimono and a hakama of Japan, and she wears thick sandals, geta on her feet. These are women's college student's typical clothes as seen in the earliest period during the course of the modernization in Japan (from the Meiji period to the Taisho period), and the cultural background for the comparison of the modernization of Windows to modernization of Japan is seen there.

95-tan's most common activities are drinking tea, serving meals or doing other housework. One recurring theme is her unfamiliarity with newer, post Win-95 technologies, such as USB devices and broadband internet connections. While appearing to be one of the more stable OS-tans, she is also often depicted wielding a katana in an aggressive manner, usually toward the Mac-tans, but also when disciplining troublemakers within her own family. This symbolizes the fact that it was her generation of operating systems that Microsoft finally achieved full dominance of the personal computer market. One comic strip shows her talking to other OS-tans about beating up MacOS; and 95 is commonly portrayed with an overwhelming hatred of the Macintosh OS-Tans, particularly her bitter rival MacOS-tan. Due the popular belief that Mozilla Firefox is incompatible with Windows 95, several OS-tan four-panel comics have been made portraying other OS-tans encouraging 95-tan to think in Russian! and 95-tan's inability to internalize the Russian language enough to accomplish this.

WIP
A very basic table of nicknames and proposed human names for OS-tans. All of these names are fanon at most, though the nicknames for the canon Windows-tans are canon, using them as the OS-tans' real names isn't necessarily.

In recent years, the OS-tan verse has become westernized in much of the fanon, with many of the new OS-tans having only western names. This seems to make the Japanese names and cultural practices of the Windows-tans appear out of place, but are kept for the sake of tradition and the OS-tan phenomenon's Japanese roots. As a compromise between the Japanese roots, and the more Western-style fanon, it has been proposed to try and come up with both Western and Japanese names for OS-tans whenever possible, which ever one being used (if at all), being up to individual preference, and why not? The OS-tan verse setting is already portrayed as anachronistic, why not a cultural fusion too?

Technical Details
Windows NT began development in 1989, with the intention on being the next evolution of IBM and Microsoft's OS/2; the team behind it lead by the creator of VMS. However, after the overnight success of Windows 3.0, Microsoft cut their ties with IBM and decided to shift focus toward making what was then known as "OS/2 3.0" into a business-oriented Windows version (Renamed "Windows NT"), while IBM continued to develop and support OS/2 on their own. While it took a while for it to catch on, NT eventually came to surpass OS/2; becoming very popular in business use for it's stability.

Although the name of Windows NT was retired after NT 4.0 was discontinued, it still lives on as the kernel powering every desktop version from Windows 2000 onward, with the exception of Windows ME.

Character Details
General
There are two mainstream personifications of Windows NT. The first NT-tan is depicted as a young woman (though her age range varies from child to adult depending on the artist) with purple hair (ranging from lilac to very dark) and blue or purple eyes. Most commonly her outfit is a simple pink dress, sometimes with a long-sleeved shirt under it, and an apron over it.

She mainly represents NT 3.x, and is the mother of 2K-tan, Inu-T and the other NT releases. When an NT-tan is being referred to, it's usually this design; the other accepted NT design is now almost always known as "Inu-T".

Although usually seen as loving, sweet and motherly, a few artists' depictions show NT-tan as a bold, and sometimes crazed warrior, shown with a bladed weapon. One such depiction shows her alongside a similarly-armed Windows 95-tan, they are thought to have trained together. Her weapon is a western-style sword, usually either a rapier or a broadsword; this contrasts with 95-tan, who wields an eastern blade.

Family and relationships
VMS
VMS-tan is NT-tan's biological mother, whom NT-tan is a modified clone of, but is unaware of their relationship; it was never told to her when she was first introduced to the Windows Family. NT-tan fought against her for control over the server market as her first mission, and won.

OS/2
OS/2-tan is NT's half-sister, although OS/2 and VMS aren't related, NT-tan was partly created from OS/2-tan's genes. Since OS/2-tan violently hates the Windows-tans, it's assumed that they have fought on several occasions before and during the OS Wars.

Windows Family
She is one of the matriarchs of the Windows Family, the other being 95-tan, who has no children, but fills a similar motherly role. As the main matriarch, she is the primary ambassador to the family during meetings with other factions. She is also portrayed as ME-tan's adoptive mother, raising her together with a young 2K-tan and XP twins, as they are close to the same age.

3.1-tan and 95-tan are commonly seen together with her, bonded by their roles in the family, and also their early life experiences.

In OSC fanon, she and 95-tan hardly ever met 1.0-tan and 2.0-tan, and didn't notice when they were exiled.

The Mac-tans
NT-tan gets along well with OSX Rhapsody-tan, the ambassador of the Mac House. Their friendship is an important key in keeping the family meetings diplomatic.

Other designs
"Inu-T"
See InuT-tan.

The second accepted one is known as "Inu-T", a young, blue haired dog-girl who wears a blue dress, and socks and gloves shaped like paws. Whether she was originally meant as an alternative design to the previously mentioned NT-tan is unknown, but now Inu-T is commonly recognized as representing Windows NT 4.0 Workstation (a later NT-based operating system preceding Windows 2000).

Deja Vu's design
Yet another NT-tan, Windows NT SP6, was designed by the dōjinshi group Deja vu, but it was considered a bootleg design by Futaba society and not an official OS-Tan. Her design has not been used since then.

History and background (OSC fanon)
WIP

Creation and early life
Windows NT-tan's creation came about as a result of VMS developers from DEC hired to work with Microsoft to develop a next-generation OS, with VMS' power and OS/2's portability. She was born in 1989 when development on Windows NT started, cloned from VMS-tan's code, a sample brought over to the Microsoft labs without VMS-tan's knowledge or permission. She is not a complete clone of VMS-tan though, her code was also partly spliced together with OS/2-tan's.

She was born into the Microsoft-IBM Family, but had only met MS-DOS-tan and the Windows-tans since she wasn't introduced to them until after the family's break-up. Early in life, she was trained to be a fighter, inheriting the training that was originally promised to OS/2-tan before her, and outside of her training, she spent the most time with Windows 3.1-tan until 95-tan was born.

When 95-tan was born, she and NT-tan trained and sparred together. They hardly ever met Windows 1.0-tan and 2.0-tan, who were deliberately kept away from them by the family's higher-ups.

Achieving dominance in the server market
Her 1993 debut was successful. While she wasn't yet at her strongest, and not strong enough to defeat any of the Unix-tans in combat, she was able to exploit the weaknesses of their war-torn faction. Their territory was overran by her forces, and from defeating the Unix-tans, she secured a large part of the server market.

She further took over the market when she also conquered the DEC faction and defeated VMS-tan in a duel; she didn't know that VMS-tan was her mother, nor ever met her, so she didn't hold back in battle. The DEC Faction declined over the next few years, losing territory to her forces before collapse.

Character Details
95 OSR 2.5-tan, also known as 2.5-tan, is an original character created for a Japanese 4koma that resembles the original Windows 95-tan but with shorter hair and wearing more Westernized clothing. She personifies OSR 2.5, the last patched version of Windows 95. She also has a more extroverted personality than 95-tan. She appeared out of the shadow of the OSes to challenge the 98 series and seems to regard 98-tan especially as a rival, but no matter what she does to 98, the other OS regards her as a well-meaning friend. She is sometimes seen wearing a black skirt, black gloves, and a white sleeveless shirt like 98, but with a red tie and black 95 style bow.

OSC Notes
Though OSR 2.5-tan was likely meant as a one-shot character in the aforementioned 4koma panels, she has achieved a mild level of popularity in the OS-tan Collections forum. Not only has she been depicted or included in various drawings by different OSC artists, but she has also been assigned a weapon in line with the warrior lineage of 95-tan. The weapon is a Jutte, or a sword-breaking device previously used by law enforcement officers in Japan's Edo Period. This was done to reference (and historically parallel) Microsoft Windows' own transition from a warring period (mid-90's, when it's future was not yet secured) to its era of dominance and prosperity in the desktop market beginning with Windows 98.

A Windows 95 OSR 2.1-tan, only briefly mentioned in passing in the aforementioned 4Koma panels, has also been created by OSC artist Aurora as part of the effort to grow OSR 2.5-tan beyond the level of a one-shot character.
Technical details
Commodore 64-tan is the personification of the best-selling single personal computer model to date. Released in August 1982 at a price of $595USD, it took the market by storm and was sold by Commodore until its bankruptcy in 1994. Both a functional computer and video game system, the Commodore 64 remains popular with vintage video game enthusiasts, game emulators, musicians, and classic computer collectors. The Commodore 64 is also considered one of the most one of the most iconic symbols of the 1980's.

Released in the 2000s was the C64 Direct-to-TV, a video game system developed by Jeri Ellsworth, has sold well on QVC, whose offices are now in Commodore International's old headquarters. Ellsworth also developed the C-One, a single-board microcomputer initially created in 2002 as an enhanced Commodore 64 home computer, but has been re-engineered to allow cloning of other 8-bit computers. Paralleling this, Commodore 64-tan is also an inventor (albeit in the antiquated sense) and self-proclaimed genius, and also build the android C-One-tan.

Character details
Physical
Commodore 64-tan is depicted as a young and energetic girl with a physical age range of around 13 or 14 years old. She has purple eyes, long indigo or dark purple hair with two large side-bangs by her face. She wears the remnants of her Commodore sailor uniform, now stripped of all medals, formal regalia and headpiece. It is a stylized, antiquated naval captain's uniform, complete with tasseled epaulettes. It is mostly white with blue and red trim, including ranking insignia on the sleeves, and the collar is decorated with the C=64 rainbow stripes associated with the most iconic C64 design. Her full uniform had medals, and an aviator hat with goggles.

Personality
Unlike most vintage OS-tans, she adores maintaining herself with the latest trends, fads and gadgets, either regularly carries around some modern portable media device, or brands some pop-culture reference meant to keep her in step with today's youth (e.g, a Naruto-style headpiece etched with the original Commodore 64-logo).

Paralleling the success of the C64 Direct-to-TV and the C-One, Commodore 64-tan is also an inventor (albeit in the antiquated sense) and self-proclaimed genius, and also build the android C-One-tan. She is a passionate musician.

The present-day C64-tan can best be described as both pleasant and practical when involved in day-to-day matters; but she does turn bratty, sarcastic, condescending and/or distracted when it comes to matters of gaming or technology. However, C64-tan in her prime was strict, ambitious and highly-proud of her role commanding the flagship of the Commodore armada. It is for this reason that she never liked and frequently despised her cheery and easygoing stepsister AmigaOS-tan, who she blamed unfairly for her company's demise. This animosity has long been put aside, and both are now very close and loving sisters.

Abilities
C64-tan has a good amount of innate magical ability, much more advanced than her older sisters and the C64's hardware specs, sound abilities and graphics were the most advanced for an 8-bit computer upon debut. She has a lot of spellbooks, and can do a lot of elaborate spells, referencing the C64's huge software library and popularity in the demoscene. However, her most elaborate spells are only for show, and she takes more pride in her inventions and hardware mods.

Family and relationships
Amiga
Back in the service of the Commodore Fleet, C64-tan despised Amiga-tan, and treated her as a scapegoat for many things, including Commodore's most competent staff leaving in 1984, and for the Commodore faction's decline and later downfall. In service, C64-tan always saw Amiga-tan as a potential threat from within, but also extremely jealous of Amiga-tan's music and artistic abilities, which outclassed hers. C64-tan resorted to emotional abuse to make Amiga-tan feel bad about her abilities. After reuniting, Amiga-tan forgave her for everything, and C64-tan regrets what she did, and wants to encourage Amiga-tan to take up music again.

C264
C264-tan used to resent C64-tan, and feared losing her fanbase to her, and living the rest of her life as a failure. They get along okay in the present day, as their fanbases have different niches, so C64-tan's isn't a threat to hers.

ZX Spectrum
C64-tan's strongest rivalry historically was with ZX Spectrum-tan, fueled by the intense rivalry of their fanbases and armies. In the present day, Spectrum-tan is mellow and non-confrontational, but C64-tan still feels compelled to challenge her at any given opportunity.

Atari ST
As intense as C64-tan's and ZX Spectrum-tan's rivalry was historically, C64-tan didn't have that much against Spectrum-tan personally. The same couldn't be said for ST-tan. Related to the circumstances of Atari ST-tan's birth, her very existence was seen by C64-tan as a tremendous betrayal. After the collapse of both their factions, they reconciled somewhat, but still have an intense rivalry, as rival musicians in the Binteeji Renmei.

Winduko: I'll edit it with Annex 2.0 details in addition soon, but for now I'll mark it as outdated.

Outdated

The OS-tan Annex Project was started on September 16, 2006 by former OS-tan Collections member C-Chan to create a OS-tan 'universe' to include new OS-tan characters and backstories. The Annex Project is by no means official but is an expanded universe that strives to integrate the new OS-tan characters and backstories with those of other OS-tan artists while still staying faithful to the original OS-tan canon and the work of other artists.

In the Annex Project, OS-tans are grouped into factions not to force political separations on them but rather to better organize them and the storytelling elements and that it would be much easier to remember an obscure OS-tan if she has a group representing her.

As of Jan 10 2011, the Annex Project in its entirety will be ported here. The original forum posts can't be updated anymore because of size constraints the new forum migration imposed, at 20,000 characters, which each of the original posts had already exceeded. The bios in this project are separate from the main articles, and are written in a condensed form and follow the continuity and 'canon' of this particular OS-tanverse.

There are 9 current factions plus a category for deceased OS-tans, and Wanderer Class for unaligned OS-tans making for a total of 11 categories, not counting former factions.

Current Factions
Windows Family
The richest and most influential OS-tan faction of all, The Windows Family has all but monopolized the consumer market, their company having secured a Pax Micrsoftica for nearly 20 years. No other faction in recent history has so successfully matched the aggressive marketing tactics, scorched-earth policy towards rivals and wide appeal to the masses that has supported the Family's rise to power. But while the older members appreciate (through experience) the need to get their hands dirty, long-standing peace and prosperity has all but cloistered the newer generation of Windows-tans. They go on about their enjoyable daily lives, secure in the belief that only the Macs present any kind of nuisance, and completely oblivious to the political, economic and tactical maneuverings of parties largely unknown to them.

* See Bios

House of Mac
The second most influential OS-tan faction -- and perhaps the most glamorous in the eyes of the average consumer -- the Mac-tans have long since realized that taking on an economic juggernaut like the Windows Family would be financial suicide. Therefore, following their defeat in the Consumer War of the mid-90's, they stepped up efforts to reorganize around their niche markets and rebuild their two decade-old brand name one loyal customer at a time. Their strategy has so far been success as the Apple brand has had a strong resurgence in the consumer lexicon in recent years. However, this comeback is still primarily white-collar, the Macs not yet ready (or willing) to seek the exposure of the wider masses. The newer Mac-tans, in fact, are so far removed from their down-to-earth roots, that while they remain friendly, intelligent and sophisticated for the most part, they're not adverse to let slip a posh or elitist remark (carelessly, of course!) during idle conversation. That, or engage in the secret, playful activities of the rich and famous.

* See Bios

Binteeji Renmei (Vintage Federation)
The Binteeji Renmei is itself inspired by the remarkable Anime/Manga Haibane Renmei created by Yoshitoshi Abe. It is a non-profit organization dedicated primarily to assisting vintage and abandoned OS-tans, and providing a voice for them in a world that barely remembers them. It was originally conceived by Amiga-tan, having spent several years as a wanderer and witnessing the plight of countless vintage OS-tans (once the marvel of their day) whittling the remainder of their lives in obscurity. However, in a rare bout of compassion by Unix, she provided the funding to help Amiga-tan make the Binteji Renmei a reality, and to this date continues to offer the fledgling faction a token annual stipend.

The Binteji Renmei is not rich by any stretch of the imagination and many of its members are either too outdated to work a decent-paying job or require special assistance. Nevertheless they remain very talented and resourceful individuals, and by binding together as a community they're able to pool their resources far more effectively, as well as discover newfound strengths and motivations. Self-esteem, self-education and self-sufficiency are among the many values that they help each other learn and practice to a fault. Whereas once the organization subsisted entirely on charity, now it's grown and sustained itself to the point where it can offer charity of its own. If not in the form of money, certainly in the form of hope.
Hope for any OS-tan resigned to the belief that happiness and belonging are reserved only for the state-of-the-art.

* See Bios

Anti$oft Coalition
A tiny political faction founded by OS/2-tan in the mid 90's and originally meant to challenge the legality of several of the Microsoft Family's business practices. But after further funding cuts, scorn and ridicule by her parent company destroyed any chance of her faction gaining mainstream credibility, she was forced to take it underground and fund it entirely out-of-pocket. As her desperation and anger for the continuous injustice grew, so did the faction's slide towards the use of guerrilla tactics.

Due in part to its low recognition and her notoriously bitter temperament, she's only succeeded in hiring four other members (plus a die-hard fan that she can't seem to shake off). Since these loyal followers possess a string of quirks of their own, and have very questionable combat experience, the once proud A$C is now often derided as a ragtag group of bitter old women (or hags, in less courteous circles). They may get away with petty sabotage or a 1-on-5 ambush, but have a humiliating track record of regularly botching ambitious and often not-so-ambitious attacks.

Even as financial woes grow more and more merciless, OS/2 stubbornly refuses to give up on the A$C and sees no end in sight (short of her own demise).
Linux/Unix Consortium
The largest and strongest faction of all, created from the merger between the ineffectual Linux Union and the tattered remnants of the once-dominant Unix Family. It was cofounded by Unix and Linux-tan, once sworn enemies, now friendly and productive partners working toward a viable future for their kind. The Unix-types bring to the table the experience of a three decade-old dynasty (the long-lasting of all), plus a respectable amount of wealth and a loyal corporate and industrial base. The Linux-types offer a long sought-after infusion of new talent, being spreaders of an admirable ideological doctrine that have garnered them support from a far more diverse consumer, academic and technocratic base across the world. With their combined strength, they are (at least on paper) the most powerful faction in terms of raw strength, numbers and performance stability per capita.

Ironically, the LUC also happens to be the LEAST politically-stable faction of all, as both Unix and Linux-tan were forced to combine two very different cultures too quickly. Staunchly independent spirits, conflicting agendas, flagrant power boasting and polarized ideologies are some of the many problems that bring about almost daily infighting between the members. The problem is aggravated further by frequent returns and departures of members disinterested in a unified front, having preferring instead to add to the medley of splinter factions or opt for the quiet life of a Wanderer.

Nevertheless, the struggle to sort through the chaos continues, and progress has been made to bridge the Linux-Unix divide, as well as create inroads into previously untapped and potentially strong emerging markets. Should the day come when the LUC members settle their differences and agree to form a unified front, the resulting explosion of power and talent (reaching to every corner of the known world) is said to be akin to the awakening of a sleeping dragon.

User Space Gang
The most powerful, successful and longest-standing LUC splinter group ever formed. Originally founded by Plan 9-tan (one of Unix's direct descendants), it began in protest because she did not want to be the heir to the Unix throne during the Unix Wars. While access to the throne and the consequent family fortunes are still of interest to her, the birth of her own daughter ( Inferno-tan) has expanded her ambitions exponentially. Putting it simply, she wishes to convert the tiny gang into the beginnings of a new dynasty -- and the trickling in of other disgruntled Unix-types into her faction have only helped fuel her visions of grandeur.

At least on paper, the User Space Gang shares a few similarities with the Anti$oft Coaltion. But unlike the latter, the User Space Gang has the power, resources and intelligence to be a forced to be reckoned with. They're able to launch rebel attacks against the LUC without fear of (total) annihilation and can certainly reign down destruction against any of the lesser factions foolish enough to stand in their way. Clearly there are no impediments to the formation of a User Space Dynasty why that hasn't happened yet has much to do with the state of the leader's sanity (to say nothing of her daughter's).

DOSSE
More of a club than a faction, all its members reside with other factions and simply convene as the DOSSE when scheduling permits (or the occasion calls for it). Automatic membership is given to all x86 DOS-tans, though other non-GUI OS-tans can join if they're willing to pass through The Trial. The DOSSE's mission is to speak up for the rights and recognition of command line OS-tans everywhere, who are often derided by the consumer class for being not user-friendly enough. They offer free assistance and technical support to fellow sisters in need, maintain their own free BBS and even release a crude (but charmingly-detailed) monthly newsletter. However, since all current DOSSE members are child-types, they don't shy from spending some or all of their meeting time having a little fun. And on occasion, too much fun, and on rare instances, even a little neighborhood mischief.

The DOSSE was first founded by x86 DOS-tans residing at the Binteji Renmei. However, it was not their original idea. The concept was first drafted by an as-yet undisclosed OS-tan over a decade ago, and she clearly supported the idea once it was that someone would make it a reality. Even to this day, she remains the anonymous benefactor to the DOSSE, and it is the hope of all its members that they will meet her one day.

Mainframe Guild
The word "faction" is probably ill-suited since the group is exclusive only to Mainframe OS-tans, the goddesses of the OS-tan Annex Universe. They overlook the workings of the world from behind the scenes. Contact with mortal OS-tans is considered taboo and forbidden (with the exception of former Mainframe-tans who have simply undergone microsizing), and, conversely, many obstacles have been emplaced to prevent mortal OS-tans from accessing the "Mainframe". Therefore, little is generally known about these mysterious OS-tans, other than they are insanely powerful and many are impossibly arrogant. Even less is known about the occasional secret "meddling" in the affairs of mortal OS-tans, which again is forbidden (but perhaps not as well-enforced as it should).

Confederation of Independent OS-tans (CIOST)
Not a true faction in the literal sense, since members don't regularly convene, live together (or even close by) or have any defined territory borders or markets. The Confederation of Independent OS-tans is essentially a mutual defense pact for non-aligned OS-tans, who fiercely defend their own independence and (unlike Wanderers) have agreed to defend the independence of their fellow sisters. A number of its members have had run-ins with Windows, Macs, Unix and Linux-types in the past, so almost no CIOST members are related to any of these factions. Therefore, the CIOST membership boasts an enormous and colorful diversity of OS-tans of all types, trades and personalities. The majority of its members, however, are generally considered (in varying degrees) to be quite powerful, resourceful to an art, and a touch antisocial.

The CIOST was first established by VMS-tan, after witnessing the travesty that became of her involvement with Windows NT. Recognizing the threat posed by well-marketed inferior programming in an ignorant world, the pact was set up as quickly as possible to admit and protect as many of her kind as possible from the ravages of the 90's wars. Sadly, her own hermit-like lifestyle and laissez-faire approach to everything but defense did much to influence the CIOST in becoming the decentralized organization that it remains today. United, the CIOST is powerful enough to shatter the Windows hegemony and even take on the LUC!

But divided, they are neither a threat nor much of an inspiration.
But since the world of the OS-tans is constantly changing in the Annex Project storylines, there have also been some former factions including:

Apple Family
Name changed to House of Mac when Apple II retired in 1993.

CDC Faction
Officially disbanded around 1989, its members are still together in the Mainframe Guild.

Commodore Family
Disbanded in 1994 when Commodore went bankrupt.

DEC Military
Disbanded in 1998 when DEC was bought out.

Microsoft-IBM Family
Broke up in 1990. The Windows-tans and MS-DOS became the Windows Family, PC-DOS and OS/2 were left in IBM's custody.
Character Details
General
Macintosh System 7.5-tan is fairly recently-established character, represented as a blue-eyed blonde-haired woman in a light blue dress, white top and taskbar-style armbands. She bears a strong resemblance to a long-haired Mac OS9-tan, and more so resembles 9.2-tan, but her personality is opposite of theirs; 7.5-tan wields large rifles, is serious, disgruntled and often trigger-happy, but has a soft spot for a few people.

She is usually friendly towards the young OSX-kun catboys, but still willing to enforce punishment if necessary. In another of the first known comics pages featuring her, 3.1-tan is oblivious to 7.5-tan's disgruntled personality and even calls her Al-chan.

Alternate Character Interpretation
In Futaba canon
She is the oldest Mac-tan in Futaba canon and is seen as a big sister to all the other Macs.

Other continuities
In the OS-tan Annex Project and related continuities, she is thought to be a wanderer, who left the House of Mac after the OS Wars, feeling like a failure. Sometimes she visits, but mainly spends her days as a wandering vigilante.

How to add names to the table
Table code
<pre>
scope="col"|Character
scope="col"|Western name
scope="col"|Japanese name
scope="col"|Common nickname(s)
character goes here||western name||japanese name ||other nicknames
</pre>

Add an entry
Look at this sample row:

<pre>
character goes here||western name||japanese name ||other nicknames
</pre>
The first pipe "|" marks the start of the new row, and because scope="col" is used for each column, the other cells in the row use double pipes "||". The last entry goes to the right of the last double pipes, and is closed off with a

<pre>
</pre>
right below the row.

Insert it into the section you are looking for.

Notes about names
Windows-tans
Since the debut of the semi-official Windows 7 mascot, Nanami Madobe, some fans have decided to incorporate Madobe (meaning "by the window") as the last name for all Windows-tans.

Mac-tans
Their proposed last name of Fuji for their Japanese names refers to the Japanese Fuji apple.
