PentiumMMX has been part of the OSC since December '08...although technical issues with her internet connection caused her to go absent from roughly May '09 until March '11, but that's beside the point. She's known by many on the site's forums for her lust for adventure, her love of wearing cute outfits, and for being, quote, "that cute maid that tinkers with old computers".

Although she does appreciate all OSes and hardware, she does have an undying love of Windows 2000 (Which she considers to be one of the best versions of Windows ever made); to the point her gaming desktops have been named in honor of [[Windows 2000|2k-tan]]...even if the most recent version runs Windows 10 natively, with 2000 in an emulator; much to the confusion of everyone else.

She has also written a series of stories centered around the adventures of a fictional version of herself with 2k-tan, as well as her (fictional) twin sister. Some other OS-tans have popped up in the more recent installments, although 2k is the mainstay.

The variant of XP-tan that represents Windows XP Home is known as Homeko has green hair that she wears in a short ponytail and wears two large XP-shaped hairclips that cover her ears. She is the closest sister of [[XP-tan|Saseko]] and [[Homeo]].

She is characterized as a ''fujoshi'' and yaoi doujinshi artist who has an unhealthy fascination with her gender-confused brother Homeo. She is the female lead in the Homeo saga, providing a role as Homeo's muse and tormentor. Quite possibly the most perverted character in the saga (besides [[Norton Antivirus|Dr. Norton]]), she is obsessed with yaoi fantasies. She uses her brother's gender confusion to generate situations for her doujin works. While they carry a strong bond, it is one of dominatrix over her brother. Their vagaries often result in some quite zany, if not outright ecchi, situations. In recent years, Homeko and Homeo have become some of the more popular characters in Nijiura's comics.

Windows 2000 is the successor to [[Windows NT]] 4.0, and the first widely-available NT-based Windows Distribution. It was aimed at the business sector and thus was widely used in offices and servers rather than homes. To make up for this, Microsoft released [[Windows ME]] around the same time, which was aimed at the home market, but ME's lack of stability meant that 2000 stayed around quite a bit longer. Indeed, the professional, sturdy OS was supported for 10 years, rather long given the lifecycle of some OSes. While it was initially the most secure OS that Microsoft had ever released, some ambitious individuals took this as a challenge, and as a result several hard-hitting viruses were created specifically to target it. While it was succeeded by [[XP-tan|Windows XP]] in 2001, Microsoft continued to release security patches for it until the end of its lifecycle in 2010.
Windows 2000 features upgrades to the GUI of NT, improved support for users with disabilities, encryption, improved system management tools, and several features present in the [[Windows 98]] line, such as Internet Tools (Outlook Express, IE 5, and others), and extended plug and play support.
Windows 2000 was supposed to be adapted into a home version, codenamed [[Neptune|Windows Neptune]]. Neptune saw the release of a few betas, but sadly never made it out of test lab, and it was eventually integrated into Whistler, which later became Windows XP.

2k-kun is a man in his late 20's to early 30's sporting a rounded blue haircut, blue-grey eyes, and metallic cat ears (albeit smaller than his sister). He is tall, and constantly seen in business attire of some sort. He is overall a calm, rational man, typically looking after his brothers and sisters with a sort of fatherly nature about him, not unlike [[95-kun]]. Though he can get angry, for the most part he doesn't, staying as a carefree, happy=go-lucky kind of guy.

==Character details==
Minix is a free, Open Source OS and inspired the creation of Linux. Minix-tan is represented as a very small (ranging from 15 cm [0'6] to 75 cm [2'6]) raccoon woman with sunglasses, raccoon ears, short pinkish hair, wooden shoes and wears a casual outfit with the Minix logo on her shirt. She carries around floppy disks- or in her smallest form, she is seen riding on a flying floppy disk.

She is a teacher and is a quiet person, but only because she wants to let others find out about her than just telling them outright. No one understands how she sets her priorities, her own stuff is always more important than anything someone else can want from her, referencing Minix's scheduling algorithms. Despite that, she is reliable. As a reference to Minix's reincarnation server, Minix-tan can always start back up again after falling down and is a great self-healer. Her daughter is [[Minix vmd | Minix VMD-tan]].

She was [[Linux | Linux-tan's]] mentor during her childhood and taught Linux-tan the things she would need to know to succeed in life. While the two get along for the most part, their early relationship was shaky and the two argued a lot, referencing the legendary Linux vs. Minix debate on the internet of the early 90's.

==OSC Notes/backstory==
Minix-tan was Linux-tan's mentor in the early 1990's. During this time, the Unix Wars were going on and Minix-tan was abandoned by [[UNIX]] for teaching a copycat what she knows (this was before Linux-tan and UNIX became friends). Around 1995, Minix-tan sent the young Linux-tan on a journey to save Linux-tan from dealing with the Unix Family (who was out to get her at the time, especially UNIX who wanted her destroyed), and to keep her away from the entangled mess of the Unix Wars (and later the OS Wars).

In recent years, Minix-tan has gotten in better graces with the Unixes. She is in the [[Linux Unix Consortium | Linux/Unix Consortium]] and serves as the mediator between the Linuxes and Unices.

===General===
Amiga-tan or 'Miggy' is commonly drawn as a young, tall, friendly and energetic artist. She is one of the tallest vintage-tans, and towers over all of her contemporaries; this referencing how advanced and powerful the Amiga hardware is, while leaving her seemingly awkward and intimidating compared to them. Her original checkered shirt is based off the contemporary Amiga logo, although the monogram on her chest, the rainbow checkmark on her beret and rainbow eyes nod towards the older 80's logos. Her attire is meant to have a 50's retro look as she is a bit old-fashioned; however, her personality and ideas have (and continue to be) well ahead of their time. As an artist she carries around an art tote riddled with as many easter eggs as art supplies (although later renditions omitted the bag out of practicality).

The beret she wears is the only part of her old [[Commodore Family]] uniform that she still wears. Her old uniform is a stylized, sleeveless sailor outfit with long white gloves; the blouse is white, the skirt and collar are blue and the scarf is red. In her youth, her hair was short and tied in pigtails with Amiga Boing Ball hair ties.

Another depiction of Amiga-tan is her gala dress, this design debuted in Dec 2006 to commemorate the debut of Amiga OS 4.0.

She is one of the few old-era OS-tans (not including the Mac-tans) that still remains very active and has the potential to stage a market comeback. But due to her preference of cooperation rather than competition, she strives to bring ALL underrepresented OS-tans to the public consciousness rather than only herself. Being a voice for the minority doesn't gain her much efficiency, but makes her particularly charismatic to both friends and strangers alike.

Like most old-era OS-tans, the [[Amigoid Family]] structure has historically been somewhat fragmented. Amiga-tan has a mother ([[TRIPOS-tan]]) and two daughters ([[MorphOS | MorphOS-tan]] and [[AROS | AROS-tan]]), but rarely has a chance to see them. When she was born into the service of the Commodore Family, TripOS-tan had to sign away her parental rights to Amiga-tan, and they have not met until recent years.

Her daughters are actually cloned from her, since she had nothing to do with them being created; she refers to them as her daughters because it's more personal that way.

====Commodore-tans====
Her stepsisters are the [[Commodore Family|Commodore-tans]]: [[Commodore PET | Commodore PET-tan]], [[Commodore VIC-20 | Commodore VIC20-tan]], [[Commodore 64 | Commodore 64-tan]], [[CommodorePlus4 | Commodore Plus/4-tan]], [[Commodore 128 | Commodore 128-tan]] with whom she spent her entire youth; except for Commodore 65-tan, who she had never met until long after the Commodore Family disbanded).

While in service, most of her stepsisters disliked her. PET-tan was constantly annoyed over her disregard for military etiquette, VIC-20-tan and C64-tan hated her for years, seeing her as a threat who would steal their following away. The rivalry was especially personal to C64-tan, who is an aspiring musician and hated that Amiga-tan is a talented musician. Plus/4 merely tolerated her, and C128-tan was somewhat friendly though.

But it is only in recent years that she's been able to get along well with at least PET-tan, C64-tan and C128-tan.

====AMIX (Amiga Unix)====
AMIX-tan was from a Unix bloodline, and was a stepsister to Amiga and the rest of the Commodore Family. AMIX-tan was emotionally cold and calculating, but also lonely; most of her stepsisters were too busy competing amongst themselves or other home computer-tans to pay much attention to her. Amiga-tan, not being very competitive, spent some time with her and became her friend.

====UNIX====
Amiga-tan has met UNIX on occasion, and visits the Binteeji Renmei from time to time. UNIX is friends with her, and is the benefactress of the faction. This was because even at her most bitter after the pain of the Unix wars, she was amazed by Amiga-tan's kind treatment of AMIX-tan, her generosity towards others despite her hardship, and was just happy to meet someone friendly and honest for one of the first times in her life.

Amiga-tan has multiple origins, She is the daughter of TripOS-tan, and was originally going to get adopted into the Atari Family, as the Amiga began development by Atari employees, but when Amiga-tan was born, the Commodore Family offered Trip OS-tan a better deal for her under the condition that she sign away her parental rights.

The circumstances of her early life sparked blood feuds between the Commodores and the Ataris, but even then, most of the Commodore-tans didn't get along with her; she just couldn't fit in, and struggled to cooperate with others even though she wanted to. The more militant of the Commodores saw her as competition rather than an ally, and wrote her off as being arrogant.

Her biggest rival was to be Atari ST-tan, who herself was created in response to Amiga-tan being adopted into the Commodore family; Amiga-tan didn't take the rivalry that seriously (and if anything, C64-tan did much more seriously!) even though her followers did. She was created as an extremely advanced OS-tan, and was the most powerful personal computer-tan for several years. She could have easily dominated the gaming and graphics markets, but would have rather collaborated with others even though she wasn't good at it, and she wasn't a very good tactician, the latter referencing the botched advertisement campaigns of the Amiga. Those factors prevented her from gaining more territory and fortune for her family than she actually did. That was another, yet contradictory reason why C64-tan in particular hated her for years.

In the final years of the Commodore Family, their financial hardships strained their relationships further, with VIC-20, C64 and Plus/4 treating Amiga as a scapegoat. While those tensions got worse, Amiga-tan attempted to remain neutral and indifferent to cope through it all, and not get involved with family politics. Her indifference didn't help in any way. When they went bankrupt in 1994, she didn't take it as hard as many of her stepsisters.

===After the family's bankruptcy===

After the Commodore Family disbanded, everyone was left to fend for themselves, and many of them went their own ways. Amiga-tan was alone and wasn't prepared for the brutality of the OS Wars. She couldn't stop and help others, and this upset her a lot; all she could do was run from place to place, narrowly escaping the crossfire. During that time, she met [[Apple II|Apple II-tan]], [[Apple Lisa|Lisa-tan]] and [[GS/OS|GS/OS-tan]], who retired from the [[Apple Family]] to live on II-tan's farmland. II-tan allowed her to live with them, though Lisa-tan was indifferent, and GS/OS-tan was hostile at first, but they allied, motivated to help other OS-tans hurt by the war.

During their war relief efforts, Amiga-tan and her new friends found [[Windows 1.0|Windows 1.0-tan]] and [[Windows 2.0|2.0-tan]] desperately wandering around in a ravaged land. At first 1.0-tan and 2.0-tan refused to join them, feeling guilty that they 'caused' the OS Wars and didn't deserve the help being offered to them.

The HURD (aka: GNU/HURD) is not only the only Operating System with an indirectly recursive name (HURD stands for HIRD of Unix-replacing daemons where HIRD stands for HURD of interfaces representing depth), it is also a an ambitious project aiming to surpass Unix in functionality. The HURD uses a Mach microkernel on that, a set of servers for different services. Due to the ambitiousness of the project and the difficulties with the Mach microkernel, the HURD in under development since 1990 and still only reached version 0.2. It was expected to reach 1.0 in 'half a year' since 1990, but still hasn't, in 20 years of development!

==Character details==
HURD-tan is represented as a woman with short purple hair, and wearing a tuxedo. She works as waitress, serving food and drinks, as reference to the servers of the HURD. She is a college student, and is very perfectionistic, yet procrastinates a lot with her work. She is the type who would rather turn in a blank sheet than an unelegant solution, and does not care for much else.

She dislikes most of the Linux distro-tans, especially [[Linux|Linux-tan]] since she still feels a lot of anger towards her, and believes that Linux-tan stole something very important from her; Linux developed from the GNU project as well but vastly overshadows HURD. [[Debian|Debian-tan]] is an exception, and in recent years has been able to trust Arch Linux-tan and Gentoo-tan, referencing the HURD variants based off those distros. PentiumMMX has been part of the OSC since December '08...although technical issues with his internet connection caused him to go absent from roughly May '09 until March '11, but that's beside the point. He's known by many on the site's forums for his fleet of computers (Ranging from the Pentium-based desktop he grew up using to the Core i7 desktop he just built, as well as his precious laptop that he named "Asagi", among others), his love of occasionally wearing women's clothing, and being an all-around good guy.

Although he does appreciate all OSes and hardware, he does have an undying love of Windows 2000 (Which he considers to be one of the best versions of Windows ever made); to the point his newly built desktop was named in honor of [[Windows 2000|2k-tan]]...even if it runs Windows 7 natively, with 2000 in an emulator; much to the confusion of everyone else.

Windows ME (Short for "Millennium Edition") was released as the home edition of Windows 2000 Professional; since Neptune, the planned home edition of 2000, was scrapped and absorbed into what became Windows XP. '''Me-tan''' is the more cutesy personification of the much maligned and infamously unreliable Windows Me Operating System and was the first OS-tan created. She is usually known as Me-tan, but is often called Emui-san. She was created by the one now called ME-aki.

ME-tan's appearance rarely varies and is instantly recognizable. She has green hair in long braided pigtails and wears a maid outfit with an exclamation mark badge on the front modeled after the Windows error icon. She frequently carries a scallion as a weapon (sometimes a crowbar instead) to defend herself from malware attacks, this being a pun on a Japanese anti-virus software called NeGIs (Negi is Japanese for Scallion).

She is a hard worker and always wants to help her master (Toshiaki), and within the family, but predictably fails at everything she tries to do, often literally crashing and irritating her sisters. When she is not frozen or out of control, she tends to do things showing a lack of common sense or knowledge. But even after failure after failure, she still remains cheerful, friendly and optimistic.

In spite of, or perhaps due to, her pitiful plight, the clumsy ME-tan is one of the most beloved OS girls.

Her male counterpart, ME-kun is more reliable and sensible than his sister, being enrolled in some form of school or college, and often called upon to read help manuals by his brothers and sisters. He is also occasionally known to crack a perverted joke or two with his brothers, especially 2k-kun and XP Pro-kun, mimicing the trio of ME-tan, 2k-tan, and XP-tan. ME-kun is also close with Homeo, but sometimes in a harassing context, not unlike 98-tan and SE-tan.
ME-kun is quite protective of his sister ME-tan, possibly because he is more capable than she.

Aside from the frustration she causes to her family because of her unreliability, she generally gets along with them, being the closest to 2K-tan, XP Pro-tan, 95-tan and Inu-T. Being born around the same time as 2K-tan and the XP-tans, she tends to see her stepsister NT-tan (who is the mother of 2K, XP, etc.) as a mother figure as well.

She is generally civil towards the Mac-tans, and loves Mac OS9-kun, so she certainly doesn't want to get on their bad side.

She is always depicted as some degree of clumsy and air-headed, varying from a genius ditz who can do something decently (like gaming), or nearly incapable of anything and constantly freezing.

Windows NT began development in 1989, with the intention on being the next evolution of IBM and Microsoft's OS/2; the team behind it lead by the creator of VMS. However, after the overnight success of Windows 3.0, Microsoft cut their ties with IBM and decided to shift focus toward making what was then known as "OS/2 3.0" into a business-oriented Windows version (Renamed "Windows NT"), while IBM continued to develop and support OS/2 on their own. While it took a while for it to catch on, NT eventually came to surpass OS/2; becoming very popular in business use for it's stability.

Although the name of Windows NT was retired after NT 4.0 was discontinued, it still lives on as the kernel powering every desktop version from Windows 2000 onward, with the exception of Windows ME.

There are two mainstream personifications of '''Windows NT'''. The first NT-tan is depicted as a young woman (though her age range varies from child to adult depending on the artist) with purple hair (ranging from lilac to very dark) and blue or purple eyes. Most commonly her outfit is a simple pink dress, sometimes with a long-sleeved shirt under it, and an apron over it.

She mainly represents NT 3.x, and is the mother of 2K-tan, Inu-T and the other NT releases. When an NT-tan is being referred to, it's usually this design; the other accepted NT design is now almost always known as "Inu-T".

Although usually seen as loving, sweet and motherly, a few artists' depictions show NT-tan as a bold, and sometimes crazed warrior, shown with a bladed weapon. One such depiction shows her alongside a similarly-armed Windows 95-tan, they are thought to have trained together. Her weapon is a western-style sword, usually either a rapier or a broadsword; this contrasts with 95-tan, who wields an eastern blade.

The second accepted one is known as "Inu-T", a young, blue haired dog-girl who wears a blue dress, and socks and gloves shaped like paws. Whether she was originally meant as an alternative design to the previously mentioned NT-tan is unknown, but now Inu-T is commonly recognized as representing Windows NT 4.0 Workstation (a later NT-based operating system preceding Windows 2000).

===Deja Vu's design===
Yet another NT-tan, Windows NT SP6, was designed by the dōjinshi group [[Dispute between Futaba Society and Déjà vu|Deja vu]], but it was considered a bootleg design by Futaba society and not an official OS-Tan. Her design has not been used since then.

===Creation and early life===
Windows NT-tan's creation came about as a result of VMS developers from DEC hired to work with Microsoft to develop a next-generation OS, with VMS' power and OS/2's portability. She was born in 1989 when development on Windows NT started, cloned from VMS-tan's code, a sample brought over to the Microsoft labs without VMS-tan's knowledge or permission. She is not a complete clone of VMS-tan though, her code was also partly spliced together with OS/2-tan's.

She was born into the [[Microsoft-IBM Family]], but had only met MS-DOS-tan and the Windows-tans since she wasn't introduced to them until after the family's break-up. Early in life, she was trained to be a fighter, inheriting the training that was originally promised to OS/2-tan before her, and outside of her training, she spent the most time with Windows 3.1-tan until 95-tan was born.

When 95-tan was born, she and NT-tan trained and sparred together. They hardly ever met Windows 1.0-tan and 2.0-tan, who were deliberately kept away from them by the family's higher-ups.

===Achieving dominance in the server market===
Her 1993 debut was successful. While she wasn't yet at her strongest, and not strong enough to defeat any of the Unix-tans in combat, she was able to exploit the weaknesses of their war-torn faction. Their territory was overran by her forces, and from defeating the Unix-tans, she secured a large part of the server market.

She further took over the market when she also conquered the DEC faction and defeated VMS-tan in a duel; she didn't know that VMS-tan was her mother, nor ever met her, so she didn't hold back in battle. The DEC Faction declined over the next few years, losing territory to her forces before collapse.

Fedora-tan is the younger sister of [[RedHat|RedHat-tan]], who was raised from a young age by her older sister to be a general use OS; since RedHat now had a career as a businesswoman. Even with her humble beginnings, she rose to great success over the years; eventually becoming a rival to every current OS, including but not limited to [[Ubuntu|Ubuntu-tan]], [[MacOS|OSX-tan]], and [[Windows 7|7-tan]]. Although she is a high-ranking member of the Linux Unix Consortium, she's less concerned about her rank than her sister, and is more focused on the computing world at large.

She has a zest for life, sense of initiative, and is always eager to be the first to start a trend or adapt technology, although she can be a bit brash and reckless in the pursuit; sometimes sacrificing stability in the name of having the latest software. In this regard, she has outpaced her older sister, who favors stability, although RedHat does come to her sister when she needs info on the latest trends.

In her spare time, she has been known to join her sister on spy missions.

The most common appearance for her is that of a lady in her 20s, with brown hair and brown eyes, wearing a blue business suit with a light blue "F" on the coat, a light blue necktie, and a light blue miniskirt, as well as a blue fedora and high-heeled boots. She's often seen carrying a spear as her primary weapon.

An alternate version portrays her as young girl with blue eyes and light blue hair in pigtails, wearing a blue dress.

Microsoft Neptune entered development in 1999; with the intention of being a home edition of [[Windows 2000]], as a successor to [[Windows 98]]. After only a few test builds, Neptune was scrapped; with [[Windows ME]] being released to tide over customers, while Neptune was merged with [[Odyssey]] (The planned successor to Windows 2000 for businesses, which never made it past the concept stages) were merged to form a new project known as Whistler, which became what we know today as [[XP-tan|Windows XP]].

Neptune is portrayed as being very cold and hate-filled; brought on by her abandonment so early in her training. As a result of this, she has a hatred of ME-tan for being her "unworthy replacement" and of 2k-tan for being what she could no longer hope to be: successful and loved. She was at one time known under the alias of "The Reaper"; an assassin for hire who is most commonly given the task of hunting down and killing those whom are deemed obsolete, although she's been known to target anybody who finds out too much information about her true identity and past.

She has two different appearances; the most commonly seen one in artwork has her resembling an android from the online game [[Wikipedia:Phantasy Star Online|Phantasy Star Online]]. She is easily recognized by the visor she wears, and a Shinto O-fuda demon-protection charm being used to keep her banished from the real world. As the Reaper, she wears a cat suit with combat boots, with the handle of a small dagger sticking out of the side of the right boot, and a motorcycle helmet with a dark tinted visor to hide her identity.

The personification for Windows 2000 was one of the first characters created. A few variants exist, but the most common is 2k-tan, the personification for Windows 2000 Professional. She is typically drawn as an intelligent, professional, reserved looking woman with short blue hair, glasses, and hairclips that resemble cat ears flanking a small white bonnet or ruffle, similar to maid's hairclip that shows the windows logo. The cat ear-shaped hairclips are a pun: "2K" in Japanese is "Ni-Ke", the meowing sound in Japanese is "nya", so she is also known as "Nya-ke".

Her outfit resembles a swimsuit suggesting the Windows logo colors, and she wears a blue long coat.

This is thought to reflect the opinion that Windows 2000 is the most stable, dependable, and balanced system. She often acts like the older sister or dependable woman among the Windows-tans and is one of the domain controllers for this reason. In addition, because of the greater stability of Win2K compared with WinME (which was released around the same time), 2K-tan is often described as a guardian of [[Windows ME|ME-tan]].

The blue in the picture in her [[:Image:Win2000.jpg| 100x100 px avatar]] is close to the default Windows 2000 desktop colour.

An alternate design, playing on the punny name of "Nya-ke" shows 2K-tan having real cat ears and a tail (instead of mechanical cat ear-shaped hair clips), matching her swimsuit, gloves and boots.

Neptune and Odyssey

Occasionally, artwork appears for internally developed versions of Windows, that were never or still have yet to be commercially released, such as those with the project names Blackcomb, Odyssey, and Windows Neptune.

Neptune was to have been the Home Edition of Windows 2000, but was dropped as a release project in favor of Windows ME. The currently preferred OS-tan character design has her resembling an Android from the online game Phantasy Star Online. She is easily recognized by the visor she wears, and a Shinto O-fuda demon-protection charm being used to keep her banished from the real world.

Odyssey, the second attempt at a Home version of Windows 2000, appears as a senior high-school girl in a blue-themed uniform, wearing glasses and a gold CDR disc as a hairpiece or halo. As this operating system was never formally published, its release was limited to an impromptu supply from the developers' own desktop CD burners, using gold CDR blanks.

(The third attempt to merge the functionality of the Windows NT and Windows 9X Operating Systems into a single product, project Whistler, is better known today as Windows XP.)

Legend such as an animal or a plant that change into human form (or vice-versa) not only exist in fairy tales and fables, but also on religious stories as well. Whether those stories were hearsay or not, they continued to spread in the form of oral traditions, caricatures, novels, legends, etc.

As such stories get passed on, learned, taught and used for amusement throughout the generations, it is inevitable that the anthropomorphic personification of non-human beings would find their way into comic-like or cartoon-like media, where such personifications can be depicted more credibly and with greater ease. In anime and manga, abiotic material that would otherwise seem inert, lifeless or alien in real life, can be animated to physically transform into a human being the likes of which could be cosplayed by anyone.

===Personification before the OS-tans===
The concept of the anthropomorphic personification is no less different in Japan. In fact many unique legends on the matter have existed for centuries -- including that of Tsukumogamis or inanimate objects that become alive [and sometimes gain spiritual human forms] after 100 years of existence -- before the advent of modern storytelling and product mascots. The most notable personification related to computers before the [[List of OS-tans | OS-Tans]] is the [[:Image:Osidolwin.jpg|OS-idol Win-chan]] ([[:Image:Osidolwinchanpr5.jpg|second version goes here]]) which is a mascot of [http://www.enterbrain.co.jp/techwin/ TECHWIN Magazine]. Even so, the iMacs were also personified by an artist named Satoshi Igarashi which is popularly known as Toy. ===Futaba: The Rise of the OS-tans===
The concept is reported to have begun as a personification of the common perception of [[Me-tan|Windows Me]] as unstable and prone to frequent crashes. Discussions on Futaba Channel likened this to the stereotype of a fickle, troublesome girl. This personification expanded, with the creation of Me-tan (dated to August 6 2003) followed by the other characters.

Some anonymous [[Futaba]] artists introduced a setting for its comic strip where a [[Toshiaki]] owns a PC. Then anonymous artists, all of a sudden included a group of women in which they personify every operating system the ''Toshiaki'' owns, in which also they didn't gave an explanation on how were they formed or did appeared or born in the setting. These group of women are the [[List of OS-tans|OS-Tans]]. The first batch of OS-tans created are all personifying a series of Windows OS, which means they are portrayed as sisters from each other. The series of Windows OS that was personified includes [[Windows_3.1|3.1]], [[NT-tan|NT]], [[95-tan|95]], [[CE-tan|CE]], [[InuT-tan|NT Workstation]], [[98-tan_and_98SE-tan|98 98SE]], [[Me-tan|ME]], [[2k-tan|2000]], [[XP_Family|XP]] and [[2003_Server|Server 2003]]. The OS-tans obviously considers the ''Toshiaki'' their master and lives with him. They almost have the traits of the operating system they respectively represent. Not only do they help their master on maintaining things that are technically related to computers, but they also do his chores and obligations around the house. That setting on those comic strips became temporary at first, until all Futaba artists accepted it and followed popularly.

Other than the Windows sisters, other operating system such as [[MacOS]], [[Linux]], and [[Lindows|Linspire]] were also given a personification and commonly appeared with the Windows sisters at that time. These were soon followed by the personifications of [[OS9|MacOS9]] and the eventual conversion of the generalized MacOS to be the personification of the entire Mac OSX line. The Japanese suffix ''-tan'' (#12383;#12435;) is a child's mispronunciation of ''-chan'' (#12385;#12419;#12435;), an informal, intimate, and diminutive honorific suffix for a person used for friends, family, and pets. In this case, the mispronunciation is used intentionally to achieve the contrived cute or charming effect that is commonly associated with its use by young children. It is also sometimes added to the names of non-mascot characters, such as Sakura from ''Cardcaptor Sakura''. The personifications as a whole are commonly simply called mascots or mascot characters. The ''-tan'' suffix itself means nothing outside its role as an honorific and its implications of cuteness; it is never used on its own. Often the Windows girls are seen carrying scallions. This is a pun: a popular Japanese firewall program (NEGiES) sounds like the Japanese word for scallion (''negi'') so the OS-tan carry scallions around as shields or weapons. A scallion is also the icon used for the firewall itself.

===Breast Size, Hunger, and Memory===
It has been suggested from time to time, that the breast sizes of the individual OS-tans represent their RAM requirements. Because [[XP-tan|Windows XP]] is considered a memory hog due to its increased resource consumption, XP-tan is incredibly well endowed (and she has no qualms about getting upgraded from time to time). 2K-tan normally rates as a close second, whereas as someone like [[MSDOS | MSDOS-tan]] lies at the complete opposite end of the spectrum. Another theory states that the breast size of an OS-tan represents the overall fanciness of their graphical user interface. Since XP was designed with 'bells and whistles', she has the largest breasts, but DOS, being no more than a command prompt, is at the other extreme. An alternate method of displaying memory or resource requirements in general is through the character's appetite. XP is often seen eating ridiculous amounts of food, sometimes to the point of obesity.

The OS-Tan phenomenon has had its share of problems. The OS-Tans (''OS??'') have became popular as an internet meme in Japan. Ever since the interactive flash animation known as '''[[Troubled Windows]]''' (とらぶる・うぃんどうず ''Toraburu Windouzu'') was released in the internet, it gained more popularity and viewers in Japan. The flash animation was even subbed in English and was distributed as a video (not interactive) that it added its exposure and viewers outside Japan. PentiumMMX has been part of the OSC since December '08...although technical issues with his internet connection caused him to go absent from roughly May '09 until March '11, but that's beside the point. He's known by many on the site's forums for his fleet of computers (Ranging from the Pentium-based desktop he grew up using to the Core i7 desktop he just built, as well as his precious laptop that he named "Asagi", among others), his love of occasionally wearing women's clothing, and being an all-around good guy.

Although he does appreciate all OSes and hardware, he does have an undying love of Windows 2000 (Which he considered to be two of the best versions of Windows ever made); to the point his newly built desktop was named in honor of [[Windows 2000|2k-tan]]...even if it runs Windows 7 natively, with 2000 in an emulator, much to the confusion of everyone else
