'''2003 Server''' is often portrayed as being half-girl, half-fish, with an ethernet hub as a bonnet on her head. Other versions show her as a girl with a short white skirt and a vest-style top with a long tail in the back (usually with a bow) and Windows four-square logo pins in the bow at her neck and on the tail (as shown in the pic in the infobox). In some forms, she has a belt made from ethernet cable wrapped around her waist. Saba is a pun: in Japanese, the word for server is pronounced "saabaa", while "saba" is the word for mackerel. The more common design is the half-girl half-fish version.

Saba-tan is constantly being eaten by cats (As another gag of the fact that she's a fish), also in one episode, Windows 95 is seen cooking Saba-tan for lunch, she has been gutted, stunned, and placed on a cutting board as 95 is seen with a sharp knife, preparing to chop Saba-tan up and cook her for ME and 2K to eat. It is still unknown how she escaped that situation since she was unconscious while 95 held the knife up ready to chop her up.

Also in the picture of all the OS-tans, she is seen becoming a cats lunch, however she returns in a later comic, indicating that she somehow escaped being eaten for lunch, or the fact that there are many Saba OS-tans in the OS-tan universe.

Windows Server 2008 (formerly known as Longhorn, not to be confused with the [[Longhorn | Longhorn]] that later became Windows Vista) is [[2003 Server | Windows Server 2003's]] successor and is the latest server OS from Microsoft. It is built with the same code base as Windows Vista and shares most of Vista's features.

Like Server 2003-tan and Server 2000-tan, Server 2008-tan is half girl and half mackerel. The mackerel part is yellow and she has curly blonde hair, gold bracelets, a tiara (instead of a hub that the other Server-tans have on their heads) and her ''maebari'' (loincloth) is made of 18-karat gold. She is almost always seen with the other Server-tans.

XP MCE-tan is a rarer variant representing Windows XP Media Center Edition, a version of the popular Windows XP operating system designed primarily for home entertainment purposes.
Four versions of the OS have been released:
*Windows XP Media Center Edition (codenamed "Freestyle")
*Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 (codenamed "Harmony")
*Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (codenamed "Symphony")
*Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Update Rollup 2 (codenamed "Emerald")

Due to the higher hardware requirements, she is commonly depicted as having a larger body compared to even [[XP-tan|Saseko]]'s design.

Like many emerging OS-tans, various alternative designs for XP MCE-tan have surfaced to date. However, three relatively consistent designs stand out:

*One (shown in the infobox) depicts her as a blonde-haired woman with cat-eared orange headphones, glasses, and a green and orange stylized serafuku that bears a slight similarity to [[XP-tan|Saseko]]'s. She usually wears a pendant bearing a Media Center icon over her chest, and has been depicted carrying a remote on occasion. Her disposition is often portrayed as cheerful, although images with a more nonchalant look exist as well.

*Yet another depicts XP MCE-tan specifically as XP ME, an intentional pun of ME-tan. That being the case, while her clothing is loosely based on the loading lines of the Windows XP splash screen, the overall design can be best described as a cross between [[XP-tan|Windows XP]] and [[Me-tan|Windows ME]] (although her hair additionally gives her a strong similarity to [[Lindows]]). That being the case, she is commonly paired with ME-tan in nearly all her depictions, with common emphasis placed on the similarity of their cowlicks yet disparity in their breast size. Her disposition appears to be the same as ME-tan's, perhaps even as far as clumsiness given the issues that plague XP MCE versus XP Professional.

As of this time, there still seems to be no effort or interest in supporting either of these designs over the other. However, it should be noted that four separate versions of XP MCE exist to date, so it would not be impossible to allot each design a unique version to portray.

Gigeko is not shown to have much of a relationship with other characters. Art of her is somewhat rare.

===Appearance===
Gigeko is a younger orange-haired girl carrying a Media Center guitar case and wearing a green serafuku of a more traditional sailor style. Though she also wears glasses and bears a Media Center icon pendant, she's depicted as having slim and with a more rebellious disposition. This, in addition to her unyielding use of headphones, gives her the impression of being either a disenchanted youth or a frustrated musician. Of particular interest, however, is that she seems able to use her guitar case to fly via rocket propulsion.

Like other XP-tans her name is believed to be a pun. The "''gi''" being pulled from the first syllable of "''guitar''" and the "''ge''" coming from the first syllable of "''geta''" (The type of sandals she wears). ''-ko'' (～子/～こ) is a common suffix in Japanese women's and girls' names.

One possible reason for this omission can be traced to the perception of Windows 3.1 as marking the beginning of Microsoft Windows' rise to dominance (hence, the origin of the Windows family), and thus delegating versions 1.0 and 2.0 as simply younger facets of the more memorable version 3.1.

The two known 1.0-tan designs to exist share fairly similar appearance traits that they were for a long time recognized by OSC fanon as a single character rendition.

There are two known Windows 1.0-tan designs, one created by Futaba, another by OSC. One of the more popular OS-tans, '''95-tan''' is depicted as a traditional lady from the early modern era of Japan. This is much due to her status as an older version of modern Windows. She is a gentle-looking brown haired woman in a kimono, with a hair ribbon showing the four Windows colors. The pattern of her kimono is based on the file hana256.bmp, which was used as a desktop wallpaper pattern in the Japanese version of Windows. Her costume is a traditional kimono and a hakama of Japan, and she wears thick sandals, geta on her feet. These are women's college student's typical clothes as seen in the earliest period during the course of the modernization in Japan (from the Meiji period to the Taisho period), and the cultural background for the comparison of the modernization of Windows to modernization of Japan is seen there.

95-tan's most common activities are drinking tea, serving meals or doing other housework. One recurring theme is her unfamiliarity with newer, post Win-95 technologies, such as USB devices and broadband internet connections. While appearing to be one of the more stable OS-tans, she is also often depicted wielding a katana in an aggressive manner, usually toward the [[MacOS|Mac-tans]], but also when disciplining troublemakers within her own family. This symbolizes the fact that it was her generation of operating systems that Microsoft finally achieved full dominance of the personal computer market. ==Technical details==
Windows 95 can trace its roots back to March 1992, right after the release of Windows 3.1. Microsoft was stil developing Windows for Workgroups 3.1 and Windows NT 3.1, with their future sights set on the Cairo Operating System. However, Cairo was not expected to release for another two years, and in the meantime Microsoft realized that in order to keep competing, they needed an OS that could handle 32-bit capabiities and preemptive multitasking while still running on low-end hardware (Windows NT could not). Thus, the 'Chicago' project was born, being expected for a late 93' release, becoming known as Windows 93. Windows 93 would eventually ship with MSDOS 7.0, offering a more intergrated experience, but the Chicago Project continued on. Released at the same time was 'Cougar', a 32-bit shell for MSDOS; Cougar would go on to become the kernel of Chicago.

95 was released to great approval, quickly dominating the computer market. Part of this reason was the campaign to promote it by Microsoft; A commercial featuring the Rolling Stones' song ''"Start Me Up"'' and a 30-minute promo video (a 'Cyber Sitcom' as it was called) featuring Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry were just part of the advertising. In addition, several new features made 95 much easier to use for those new to computers, such as the Taskbar, Start Button and Menu, Longer Filenames, and Multitasking. 95 was also the first Microsoft OS to be a standalone, more than merely a graphical shell for DOS. Despite this, the 32-bit kernel, and the incompatibility of 95 with 16-bit processors, a good amount of code left over (mainly for the user interface) was still 16-bit.

95 was normally offered on a CD-ROM, though the inital release was also offered on 13 3.5" floppy disks, suitable for older machines(though with added features removed). The later releases doubled this to 26 disks, and Plus! was also adapted for floppies. Though uncommon, a 5.25" floppy disk set for installation could be special-ordered.

By the time of its obselence in 2001, 95 had become an industry standard, with many of the features introduced in 95 still being used today. 95 could be upgraded to 98, ME or even 2000, though many users still rely on 95 for legacy functions due to its closeness with DOS while still being reliable and easy to use.

However, unlike its previous predecessors globally accepted common design, Vis-tan is one to not to have a set design that everyone accepts. This has brought about an air of controversy around it as everyone simply seems to want their designs as the accepted one. However, it can be said that there are popular designs that are most often seen, such as the “Visbou” and “Vistake” designs that are mainly supported by a Japanese image board called [[Futaba]], while the [[+Nijiura+]] image board supports “Chiivis-tan”, one of its more popular designs.

Both of these '''Vista-tans''' appear to share the same unknown creator, however it is not known if they are supposed to be sibling or different versions of the same character. In terms of apparent age; one is is that of a young girl in a slightly more conservative outfit, while the other is a more matured girl bearing physical maturity comparable to [[XP-tan]].

Both designs are sometimes refereed to as "Chiivistan" this may be the result of a Japanese to English translation error of their actual name, but it is hard to know for sure.

===Design===
Both designs are depicted as a magical girl-type character in a dress-suit combo. They are fair skinned with green colored hair, said to be representing of the OS’ login screen and default background.

Her hair is very long, usually reaching down to the lower portion of the their legs; a small portion of it is usually kept in a pair of pigtails while the rest sits there on the middle. The hair ties for these pigtails have a white to aqua gradient that stick out to the side and back.

A collar of eccentric appearance floats or hangs around their neck; it has the Windows “shield” logo that is used to set apart all security features that the operating system has; underneath the shield logo the word “Vista” is written in green.

They wear a sort of black sleeveless penguin coat/vest that appears to be the only thing covering their chests. It can be noted that the lower portions of the coat is partially transparent, this reflecting on the Aero transparency features that the OS has. This coat also matches short, puffy detached sleeves on their upper arms with a similar transparent effect.

Black stockings cover most of their legs, up to the thighs.

White high collared wrist cuffs and heeled shoes both with red trims are a distinct part of their looks, each having a white circlet containing the [[Windows Vista]] logo in glass ball. Interestingly however, '''Chichivistan''''s shoes are black instead of white.

As her name implies she is very chibi, being of shorter child-like stature. Her neck piece is much looser and larger on her than her larger counterpart.

Her outfit is far more conservative, her coat is closed in the front and it reveals nothing. Instead of a bikini-cut her panties are extremely high-waisted stopping at her chest. On each side just below the armpit there is a window, barely visible due to her coat's transparency effects.

XP-tan is a dark-haired girl with ribbons in her hair and an XP hair ornament worn on the left side (infrequently, she is depicted with ornaments on both sides). As Windows XP was originally criticized for bloating a system and being very pretty without being equally as useful, XP-tan wears tight clothing and has large breasts. An early alternate outfit was especially skimpy, wearing a blue miniskirt, high-heeled shoes, and a midriff-bearing tube top with "XP" on the breasts. She usually dresses in a blue and white stylized schoolgirl outfit with ribbons and detached sleeves for decoration.

Also, [[Breast Size, Hunger, and Memory|as Windows XP used up large amounts of memory for its time]], XP-tan is often seen eating or holding an empty bowl labeled "Memory".

Around 2014 there was a surge of art of XP-tan in observation of [[Windows XP]]'s extended support being ended by Microsoft on April 8th, 2014. Despite this Windows XP still occasionally received security patches, with the last one being in May 2019.

====Early Characterization====
When the OS-tan phenomenon was in its early stages, XP was at the time the current Windows OS, and was heavily criticized. XP-tan's personality is often portrayed as shallow and promiscuous; the latter may reference not just the eye candy interface, but also the large number of security exploits XP had early in its lifetime. There is a strip where 2K-tan derides XP-tan and calls her an "Activation Whore" since XP required activation over the phone or internet to set up; this was a change in Windows that was widely criticized at the time. She generally fills the role in the manga as the typical eye candy character, but alternate interpretations may be starting to change this.

====Shift in Characterization====
The portrayal of XP-tan as a shallow piece of bloated eye candy seems to have changed ever since the debut of [[:Category:Windows Vista|Windows Vista]], its much higher hardware requirements and even fancier interface. In hindsight, XP had very high requirements for its time, but nowadays is able to run well on low-end computers, and XP's Luna GUI is simple-looking compared to Vista's and 7's Aero. While XP-tan may still be portrayed as dense and a big eater, she's now more likely to be seen as more reliable, dependable and practical than she ever was before.

In Deja Vu's doujins, she is seen as a somewhat dense but undeniably beautiful and envied character, easily compared to Mikuru Asahina from Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu. She has had the most hentai scenes out of any of the OSes, much due to her large breasts, often drawn comically huge. However, her characteristically large breasts are envied by most other characters.

She is somewhat involved in the Homeo saga, playing a minor role as a foil to [[Homeko]].

The song was sung by voice actresses Shishido Rumi(MOMO in Xenosaga), Ai Maeda(Shion Uzuki in Xenosaga) and Suzuki Mariko(KOS-MOS in Xenosaga).
The OS Pittan animation treats the three distinct voices as [[ME-tan]], [[XP-tan]] and [[2K-tan]] respectively, with each of them being animated to sing their respective lines.

* Unlike the opening OS Pittan has subtitles that almost entirely mach the lyrics, with the exception of "pittan" sometimes being changed to "OS-tan".
* ME-tan can be seen freezing and needing to be restarted several times in the animation.
* As a satire, Bill Gates was mentioned in the credits of this hypothetical anime (after about 50 seconds).

Vistake is a Futaba Channel OS-tan representing Windows Vista. She is one of the most popular and longest lasting representations of the operating system.

==Character Details==
Like [[Visbou]], Vistake has grey hair, but her hair is long and is usually kept in a spiral ponytail held by a grey colored (or metal) screw-resembling hairclip. Another of these screw-like objects is found seemingly embedded on her forehead to (seemingly) match the hairclip. These screws can occasionally be found on other parts of her design. There have been instances where the design has been made to look like the “Xbox 360” logo, or at times simply not be drawn at all.

She wears a red and white colored sailor fuku outfit. Of her clothes, the ascot, the shirt’s neck, the skirt and the shoes are colored in red, the rest in white. Her stockings are usually are striped red and white; though, this may be differ from artist to artist. In terms age, this one seems to vary much more than the Visbou design; many images have depicted her with apparent ages from 12 years old and going all the way up to 21 or so.

Her weapon of choice appears to be a large scythe with a color scheme matching her own. The origin of this is currently undocumented though.

Vistake tends to be given a disgruntled young woman vibe, however there are many cases of her being very very cheerful. She is often depicted as a digital artist, who uses a screenless drawing tablet.

Goujer: Added footnotes

This template was created for the sole purpose of establishing an easy to use character info-box within the OS-tan wiki. The infobox you now see is meant to be used for characters that are personifications of operating systems (a.k.a. OSes), other templates will be created specifically for other types of personifications as they come of need.

Properly built character articles should make use of this template as it is easy to use and there is not much code used in the user side. This would prevent any inconsistencies between infoboxes, even more it would have a set standard of required info to be given in order to maintain an acceptable degree of quality.

== Usage ==

This template is meant to reduce effort in the construction of tables and give all people the ability to fill out the infobox quite easily and without hassle. All you need to do is copy the following code and paste it at the beginning of the article.
