Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS-DOS) is an operating system for x86 personal computers developed by Microsoft. It was essentially a rebranded 86-DOS, itself a copy of CP/M.

MS-DOS-tan is most commonly represented as a schoolgirl, with black or dark grey hair in pigtails decorated with "DOS"-shaped hair ties; her hair ties are usually blue, but are sometimes depicted in the colors of the MS-DOS prompt logo as shown in Windows. She wears round glasses, a white button-down blouse with a light blue skirt and suspenders. She carries around a PC keyboard.

She originally represented the DOS prompt (In early pictures, including the one in the infobox, her armband says "Prompt") and assumed to be a catch-all for all the DOS OSes, but now more specifically represents MS-DOS.

Personality-wise, MS-DOS-tan is generally depicted as rather shy and mousey, often posed peeking around corners. The implication is that, like MS-DOS itself on 9x Windows, she is always lurking somewhere in the background, just out of sight.

==History and background==
In the backstories created at OSC, MS-DOS-tan is the twin sister of PC-DOS-tan; younger sister of [[QDOS | QDOS-tan]], and biological daughter of [[DR-DOS | DR-DOS-tan]].

In the 1980's, she happily grew up as part of the [[Microsoft-IBM Family]] and lived with [[PCDOS | PC-DOS-tan]], [[Windows 1.0 | Windows 1.0-tan]], [[Windows 2.0 | Windows 2.0-tan]], their stepsister [[OS2 | OS/2-tan]], and [[Xenix | Xenix-tan]] the family caretaker. MS-DOS-tan and PC-DOS-tan were especially close and had nearly identical personalities but the break-up of the Microsoft-IBM Family changed both of their personalities radically, and during the 1990s, they were only able to confront each other as rivals.

MS-DOS-tan lives with the present day [[Windows Family]] faction, but is a timid shadow of her former self, not just from the Microsoft-IBM Family break-up in 1990, but also from her diminishing popularity and influence.

Although a pacifist during the OS Wars, she avoided the fate that Windows 1.0 and 2.0 suffered due to passively complying with the Family's imperialist ambitions, and because she was still influential during that time. It was by the time that ME-tan was born that her influenced diminished radically (ME cannot boot DOS without a bootdisk, and is the last DOS-based Windows). She cares for all of her family, but can't seem to relate to them anymore except for 3.1 and 95 in the Windows Family; 1.0, 2.0 and PC-DOS in the Binteeji Renmei.

She and PC-DOS-tan have the habit of reuniting (in secrecy from the Windows-tans of the Windows Family, who do not know of PC-DOS-tan's existence) with each other every so often and when they do, both of their personalities change dramatically, to their cheerful former selves.

Serving as the guardian of the [[Microsoft-IBM Family]] of the 1980's, and taking her job very seriously, she was extremely loyal and caring to the other OS-tans she looked after. Her friendship with Altair-tan, and looking after the Microsoft-IBM OS-tans brought out a compassionate side of her personality, but it did not extend to other people. Aside from them, she is otherwise notoriously strict, uncompromising,and extremely inflexible when it came to rules. She was also not the type to take a joke. In particular, she did not tolerate anything being a minute late, or even early, demanding everything be done right on time, or else. She did not get along with very many people, and few missed her after her forced retirement and [[Deceased OS-tans | death]]. She is survived by her daughter, [[SCO Unix | SCO Unix-tan]].

She was hated by the Unix Family. Her loyalty to the Microsoft-IBM Family (later Microsoft Family) was uncompromising, even when the Microsoft Family started encroaching onto Unix territory.

She was a mediocre sorceress among a lineage of remarkable sorcerers, but excelled at melee combat; her weapon being a slender but powerful fiber wire which was primarily used for sneaky assassinations towards threatening program-tans.

Quickly after her 1980 debut, Xenix-tan became friends with [[MITS Altair 8800 | MITS Altair 8800-tan]] and wrote a biography about her. They briefly raised [[QDOS|QDOS-tan]] together, but after Altair's forced exile by company higher-ups, she was not allowed to speak of Altair-tan to the family.

Xenix-tan was first hired to be a servant and bodyguard for the soon-to-be Microsoft-IBM Family, but quickly demonstrated leadership qualities. She quickly rose up in the ranks of old Microsoft, and was trusted with political power within the faction. Over time though, her approval rating among everyone else, except for her OS-tan wards, plummeted. She just could not get along with other people in her ranks, and was ousted from the faction shortly after [[Windows 3.1 | Windows 3.1-tan]] (then Windows 3.0-tan) was born, circa 1989-90.

She didn't get the chance to see the family she cared for grow in influence, nor did she have much time to look after her biological daughter, SCO Unix-tan when she was born around that time. When she was affiliated with the Microsoft-IBM Family, her duties exempted her from the [[Timeline of The Unix Wars|Unix Wars]], but ended up drafted shortly after she was ousted. Nearly all the other Unixes quickly grew to hate her, because she refused to give up her loyalty to the Microsoft faction, which became a major enemy to the Unices. She couldn't form any alliances and was condemned as a traitor. OS-tan deaths in war are very few, but rival Unix factions agreed on arranging to send her to the front lines without proper support, where she was stripped of her status to die as a commoner.

Her daughter didn't get to help her fight in the war. She could only helplessly watch as Xenix-tan died on the battlefield as a commoner who didn't get a proper funeral.

OpenVMS-tan debuted 1977, under the name VMS. Born to RSX-11 during the golden era of the DEC society, she was a reserved and responsible with a dry sense of humour – and a habit of snarking. Trained extensively in swordfighting (by her mother) and the art of geomancy (by [[Multics | Multics]]), she was inducted into the DEC military that year as a colonel. By 1988, she was a major general.

Her meteoric rise through the ranks ruffled the feathers of several of her coworkers and endangered the livelihoods of a few others, notably [[TOPS-20 | Tenex]]; outside of DEC, her popularity led to [[ITS | ITS]]'s eventual deposal from MIT. While she viewed these “betrayals” as strictly a matter of business and something not in her own control, her rivals weren't as understanding; although recently she has made good with her old coworkers.

During the early 1980s VMS and unix became locked in fierce rivalry, one that continues to this day through [[BSD | BSD]] and her children. Unlike many rivals, VMS and Unix don't hate each other; their relationship is marked by good-natured, if not somewhat antagonistic, jousting.

Her name was changed to OpenVMS is 1992, but she continued to use her old moniker out of convenience. The first major trauma in her life occurred in 1993 when [[NT-tan | Windows NT]] was born and VMS subsequently discovered that she was, in part, a genetic copy of herself. The cloning was purported by VMS' creator who, after leaving DEC, was hired by the rising Microsoft empire to create their next generation of OS-tan – one capable of seizing the then-elusive server and minicomputer market. Taking advantage of the disarray of the Unix and OS Wars, NT was able to conquer already divided nations and secure the Windows empire in the professional market.

One of NT's targets was the already-weakened DEC empire; she faced off against VMS in a duel, completely unaware that her opponent was her mother. VMS, holding back for fear of injuring her daughter, was defeated; this experience made her rethink her life and pushed her toward her current-day mentality.

===Post-DEC years===
In 1998 the tattered DEC society was conquered by HP, and its -tans scattered to all corners of the earth. VMS, too powerful to be let go of, was kept on; she was one of only two ex-DEC officers not deposed of. Their stepsister is [[HP-UX]], whom VMS doesn't get along with.

Feeling no allegiance to her new company, VMS set to wandering the world, gathering disparate OS-tans of all cultures and races together to fight the mainstream powers. This was the beginning of the [[CIOST | Confederation of independent OS-tans]], an underground group of technologically-advanced, but largely unknown OS-tans.

VMS's mother is RSX, has one sister, VAXELN, and two adopted children – OZONE and FreeVMS. She occasionally meets with her old DEC comrades, but lives on her own for the most part.

VMS-tan's asexuality (and likely, aromanticism) has been more or less confirmed, in various comics, proposed storylines as well as two character interviews. While most of VMS' coworkers and friends know of - and accept - her orientation, her text editor assistant [[RED]]-kun tried for many years to win her affection, to no avail.

It has been speculated that VMS-tan was the most psychologically-affected of all the DEC-tans by the breakup of her company. In fear of becoming without a house or homeland once again, she took up residence on her ship - an old military vessel named DECADE - knowing that nobody would ever be able to put her out of her home again if she made a life on the sea.

OS/2 was released in 1987, the result of a joint venture between IBM and Microsoft. While the collaboration was initially harmonious, the popularity of Windows 3.0 (1990) and subsequent sidelining of OS/2 caused the two companies to go their separate ways. IBM continued to develop OS/2 throughout the 90s, while MS took many design cues from OS/2 in the development of Windows NT (and 95 to a lesser degree).

Ultimately, OS/2 was vastly outsold by Windows, and lost the last of its support from IBM at the end of 2006. However, it is still used in some mission-critical systems and has a devoted following.

Windows NT began development in 1989, with the intention on being the next evolution of IBM and Microsoft's OS/2; the team behind it lead by the creator of VMS. However, after the overnight success of Windows 3.0, Microsoft cut their ties with IBM and decided to shift focus toward making what was then known as "OS/2 3.0" into a business-oriented Windows version (Renamed "Windows NT"), while IBM continued to develop and support OS/2 on their own. While it took a while for it to catch on, NT eventually came to surpass OS/2; becoming very popular in business use for it's stability.

Although the name of Windows NT was retired after NT 4.0 was discontinued, it still lives on as the kernel powering every desktop version from Windows 2000 onward, with the exception of Windows ME.

NT-tan is depicted as a woman with purple hair, and blue or purple eyes, and a ponytail held by a large blue bow. Her exact age, build and hair/eye color vary by artist. Most commonly her outfit is a simple pink dress, sometimes with a long-sleeved shirt under it, and an apron.

She is sometimes portrayed as the mother of the NT releases, as well as filling a motherly role for the Windows-tans generally. Frequently, she is depicted alongside [[Inu-T]].

Although she is usually depicted in domestic settings, a few artists' depictions portray NT-tan as a warrior. She is usually drawn with a western-style sword, contrasting her with the katana-wielding [[95-tan]].

Windows NT-tan's creation came about as a result of VMS developers from DEC hired to work with Microsoft to develop a next-generation OS, with VMS' power and OS/2's portability. Harvard Mark II-tan is physically faster than Mark I, but is still slow by all standards. She speaks with a slight southern drawl.

Like the rest of her family, Harvard Mark II-tan is old-fashioned, but warmer and more emotive than her sisters. She is a classic tomboy, outdoorsy and physical, and is self-assured without crossing into smugness. She is indecisive, and something of a mama's girl, clingy and effusive toward her caretakers.

She is more aware of the wider world of computers than her older sister, but still doesn't compare herself to or feel threatened by newer models.
