I never knew that, but then i mainly used DOS from 1988-1994, and internet wasn't that common at that time...
I did use a nice shell, though; Toybox 2.02 (it was nice since it used a graphical interface with customizable icons in a windows style even handling subwindows so various sorts of applications/games could be grouped in sub-menus)...
Come to think of it, it worked a heck of a lot better than windows... :D

Hello Peoplez!
Just writing very briefly to prove I'm still alive, and not bacon yet.  ;)

Have been busy all week, from fixing friend's Win boxes (and doing the obligatory "advertisement"), to building pond waterfalls,... but the majority of the time was spent helping the deployment of EeePCLOS Beta 3.1.  Feel free to try out a copy if you'd like....  ^^

I'm actually still busy getting a head start on applets for our next release, but at least there's a lot less pressure now.  ^.^

Would like to quickly share two pieces of VERY GOOD NEWS I came across in the last 48 hours:

Fufu,... talk about chinks in the armor.  ^___^

Alright, gotta go, but hope to be back soon!  ^.^

Well, I am a big ASUS fan, but i find this hard to swallow...
Maybe M$ is pressuring them?

Wow, I never knew there were any graphic shells for DOS. I learn something new every day.

And yeah, DOS mode always worked better than 98 itself :P

Well, it's good that some countries are trying to stop them...there's really no such luck here...

Smokey

Well, Windows 3.x was a graphical DOS shell...

and, yes it's good that M$ doesn't get away with so much nowadays, but it stings that ASUS was involved, too...

Quote...You think it would work well enough in VirtualBox?

Well yeah for the most part,... but for maximum impact, you'd have to reduce the internal resolution to 800x600.  That way, you'd get a slightly better idea of the challenges of working with a small 800x480 screen.  ^____^

A lot of money, time and lives were wasted promoting how GREAT Globalism is for everyone,... from a product standpoint....

I say what's good for the goose is good for the gander, so globalization of the ideals of life, liberty, pursuit-of-happiness, and justice FROM ABROAD are just as worthy of being imported here in North America as anything else.  ^^

Quoteand, yes it's good that M$ doesn't get away with so much nowadays, but it stings that ASUS was involved, too...

You'd be surprised, but one of our greatest impediments to the EeePCLinuxOS project is Asus itself.  Out of all the [cheap] hardware they could've chosen for the EeePC, they seemed to have gone to great lengths to acquire some fairly Linux-unfriendly hardware, such as the Atheros wifi card, the problematic Intel chip [for that resolution], and the UVC camera that seems to break with every new BIOS release.

What's more, the EeePC 900 has even MORE hidden modifications that stump independent Linux distro developers for a few weeks or so, with more hidden modifications promised in the Intel Atom-based 901.

Coupled with their piss-poor technical support (they practically volunteered eeeusers.com to be their main "technical support site"), their shady pricing schemes (the Linux EeePC 900 costs MUCH MORE than the XP version in Australia), and their willingness to leave their own AsusOS untouched for over 6 months.....

Yeah, it's pretty easy to remember that they really are a company like any other.  ^^;

Sure, we do owe them (and Everex) a small debt of gratitude for helping kickstart consumer-level Linux machines -- and they really are remarkable little machines (no doubt Asus is still king in hardware).  But after I've handed in my money and given my token respects, my love ends there and it's back to business as usual.

And that being said, Asus can be a real rat sometimes.  `v'

Smokey

I think i'll keep remembering ASUS as that little cheap Taiwanese clone factory that stumped IBM and Intel by producing a working 486-board, instantly becoming an A-brand... :D

Ack, too bad it's a torrent...Unless there's a ton of seeders on a certain torrent...I hate them with a venomous passion.

(Right now Azureus is saying the ETA for this torrent is 12...no, wait, 16...excuse me, 7...now 18...no, 9, for sure, 9 hours. I usually just get a little done every day while I'm on the computer >__<)

These are the stories I like to hear; I guess progress in the acceptance of open source software...like bittorrents...is a slow but sure process.

Hey! We're back up to 18...scratch that....11 hours!

Wow, for a company that is bring Linux to the mainstream, they seem to be thwarting it (or trying) at every possible chance...

QuoteYeah, it's pretty easy to remember that they really are a company like any other. ^^;

I had never even heard of them till I found out about the EeePC, honestly ;)

And for one last installment of TorrentWatch...we have steadied at 6...nope, 7...no, no, 8, hours...DAMN YOU! 10 HOURS?! YOU IS GOING THE WRONG WAY!

C-Chan

Ahhhhhhhhh,... no wonder the torrent's taking forever,.. you're using Azureus.  `v'

It may be open-source, but even I have to recognize that it's a sloppy program, written in Java in such a way that makes it ABYSSMALLY SLOW, especially on older machines.  I'd swear you'd need Vista-loads of RAM to make it run properly.  Â¬Â¬

For Windows XP, the undisputed torrent king continues to be uTorrent, I believe.  Barring that, you can always use BitTornado,... which despite being ugly, is still very fast and lightweight.  ^^

Outside of Windows, Transmission and kTorrent are fantastic -- those might be viable options in case you want to download it from *Buntu.

But I know it's fast, cause,... well,... I'M one of those seeders.  `v'

And yes, I do have to admit that, despite having a solid collection of seeders, there's always of about 6 or 7 leechers that never seem to want to download from me.  Could be the client they're using, or maybe they're behind a firewall, I dunno,... but still, they're always there.  ^^'

Smokey

uTorrent, w00t!!!

keeps me supplied (along with animesuki) with animez... ;010

So whats that i hear about Vista-like RAM requirements? :D

You know,... like between 2-4 gigs.  :D

Nothing like convincing your avg. consumer that equipping your machine with enough hardware to run a full-fledged server is necessary to surf the web and write letters.  :P

Smokey

Or you have your average "enthousiast" who likes overkill and installs 4GB of RAM on Win XP... :D

And i am looking for an overkill watercooling system, because i know i can push my two AMD cores from 2500MHz to somewhere around 3GHz...:D
Or further...

I tried uTorrent, the ETA went from 5 hours to a day and a half. The little icon on the bottom bar was always yellow...it never went green, but it's not like uTorrent is blocked by a firewall or anything.

Oh well, K8's going to bed...
