QuoteI wish I didn't listen to my family... I'd be living as a package stacked between vintage hardware, but it'd be worth is...

*cries eyes out*

You could have started a computer museum!

I dunno if this is the right thread to babble on about this, but we are for alternative OSs and stuff and this seems to fit :P

So, I decided to solve the mystery as to why Ubuntu (and Ubuntu-based gOS) can go online when running in a virtual machine, but no other distros (that I've tried-namely Zenwalk). So I decide to load up SAM, and, after following the setup instructions, it could connect. I got all excited; now I know that PCLOS-based distros could connect to the internet in a VM. Next, I gave Puppy Linux a try, and after using the connection wizard, it could go online too. It's at this point when I realize four out of the five distros I've used can go online from within a VM, which makes Zenwalk the exception.

Zenwalk, a Slackware based distro, being difficult? Nah, that can't be!

*subtle sarcasm*

I've discovered something millions before me knew about, I feel like Columbus XD

Though it could just be because it didn't install correctly, which means I could either go though that ordeal again or download the LiveCD. I'm feeling to lazy to try either.

Hmmm...Layness...Familiar problem, along with distraction....(I'm trying to get the hang of, say 10 emulated mini-computers and super-mini's, just to see if I can find something ancient wich pwns windows...:D wich I have)
I dont tell you how to tell me what to do, so dont tell me how to do what you tell me to do... Bender the Great) :/

Oh yeah, you've been playing around with emulated minicomputers. I saw that in the Screenshots thread ^_^

In other news, I went to the Zenwalk homepage to see if that could offer any clues as to setting up a connection (since there doesn't seem to be a wizard or anything), and I found out that, supposedly, Zenwalk is very difficult to run under Virtualbox. But it has been running fine for me.

Hmmm...My friend's technopathy must have rubbed off on me a bit :P

Ahhhh,... my old club, how I've missed you.  ^^

Nothing of EXTREME interest to report in the world of alternative computing... except that the new wave of cheap, mini Linux desktops is approaching....

http://us.shuttle.com/kpc/index.htm

The KPC runs for $200USB, but has specs comparable to my EeePCs.  The XPC has more staying power though, and chalks up only $300USD.  'Fice to say, I preordered an XPC already (as the KPC's are already out of stock).  @.@

Not really feeling the Foresight Linux distro, so I'll probably swap it for,... gee,... I wonder what....?  ;D

Oooh, I'm so proud of Bella-sama's heightened sense of adventure!  ^.^
Is that version of SAM the 2008 version, or the older one?

I could give Zenwalk a go myself in Virtualbox, just to see if I can have a whack at it.  But you might have to accept the possibility that it may not have the best (or at least the most "plug n play") hardware support around.  Many distros still may not hold a candle to Knoppix or Mandriva.  ^^'

Of all the Slack-based distributions, though, the one that I really want to try out is Slax.  The latest versions perfects the use of LZMA compression, which means that those already insanely-small LiveCDs could be made to store even MORE data per disk.  The current Gzipped PCLOS livecd.sqfs file weighs in at about 700MB, but with LZMA compression it could potentially weigh in between 400 to 500MB.  It's amazing stuff, but requires a lot of work on the kernel end to implement.

That makes the Slaxsters something like bold pioneers.  ^^

BTW, Bella-sama,...  ^.^

Would you be interested...

Perhaps....

In trying THIS out in your virtualbox....?  ^___^

That was the older version of SAM. A real blast from the past!

Kinda given up on getting Zenwalk to go online....

Ooooh...you know how to get to my sense of Linux wanderlust :P

Yeah, maybe I'll give it a try. Playing around with SAM showed me how...interesting...PCLOS-based distros are...

Fufufu... not just that,... have you given the EeePCLOS Beta3 Change Log a look through?  See anyone familiar there?  :P

well i am proud to announce my next offensive against Windows (Vista)!!!

I will try to install Fedora-sama and have her try to handle my games with Wine... :D ;010

Fufu... good luck.  You might want to wait around until Wine 1.0 -- yes, after 15 years, it will finally reach 1.0 status in May!  ^v^

*cheers*

Speaking of offensive, check out the latest Groklaw articles for MORE of the dramatic saga that is the OOXML ISO vote....  ^-^;

Damn you, Microsoft-kun... For thinking that you are better than everyone else, and are thus allowed to break rules as you please.....

Heehee, I saw your username there. But I tried downloading that, and there weren't enough seeders so it went nowhere: /

I might give good ol', full-sized PCLOS a try, though....

Hah...I can't believe they compared the EeePC to the iPhone. You know what this means, an EeePC/iPhone-tan catfight picture! JK, JK...

And yeah...Mono is sounding worse by the second...

Fedora, eh? Never given much thought to it, I always thought it was something of a server distro. As for Wine; I've heard mixed stories about it...

Smokey

nah Fedora-sama is a full home-user desktop... try a LiveCD version sometimes, you'll like it... :D

Ran it a while back myself on a virtual machine.  ^.^

I do have to say, now, that Fedora has her butt kicked by Freespire... :D (Fedora doesn't recognize my rtl8187 wifi card, and Freespire autoconfigs it from a liveCD :D)

Then again,... Freespire's onee-san is also sleeping with some pretty bad company...

Have you tried Mandriva or PCLinuxOS 2008 yet?

(actually PCLOS 2008 isn't released yet, but MiniME 2008 is ready.  ;) )

Smokey

Well I have a PCLOS-Livedistro running on my lappie, wich works okay... (I guess she and my Mandriva LiveCD can get the wifi on my desktop working too... :D )
