QuoteNice drawings! I like the little messages behind PC-DOS-tan!

Thanks! It's a little DOS propaganda, heehee

QuoteThough is it just me, or do you have a lot of BASIC files on your floppy?

I found that image in Wikipedia...

QuoteWell, since you put it so bluntly, why not?

Glad somebody asked ;)

QuoteI keep hearing about "Bad Mac" things, but most of them are made up or PEBKM (Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Monitor) ^-^

Yep, is was pretty much one of those problems...He decides one day, why not use the library's Mac (ignoring the line of Windows just down the hall, LOL) to write a letter (not sure why he didn't use my computer...maybe it was in the shop, I forget...) It was a doomed project from the start...but finally, when he got the M$ Word Processor going, he couldn't type anything. The cursor just wouldn't show up on the screen...probably an isolated incident, but he's pretty much hated Macs since :(

Anyhow, I was wondering if there have been any OS-tan renditions of VMS...
And, would OpenVMS, if done as an OS-tan, be considered a different character than VMS?

C-Chan

QuoteI mean, I remember absolutely hating anything that was even remotely tied to M$ during the OS wars (My dad was an OS/2 specialist), but even I feel sorry for the breakup when looking at that picture. Now that's saying something. You are a very talented artist, and I'm very glad you showed up!!!

Deshou?  ^v^

Besides, 1.0-san and 2.0-chan lived before the OS wars, so they're definitely innocent of M$ treachery.  ^__^

QuoteEr...I didn't really make her that different...and since she's carrying an IBM Thinkpad, I believe the timing is quite off This isn't actually supposed to be in the 80's, it's more like System 1-chan's recreation of the commercial, if that makes sense... My comics usually aren't quite as thought-out as my drawings...I try to make them funny and as good as possible, but little details I usually leave to my portraits and scenes.

Oh, a recreation?  That's good too, though.  ^___^
Certainly PCDOS-tan's expression suits her perfectly now,... it's classic!  ^v^
You did an excellent job on their faces as they both look impossibly cute,... and I have to agree, the addition of the telescreen w/ propaganda was an excellent touch!  ^__^

QuoteMaybe I should...just that many of my pix are quite large, and most forums have size restrictions...

Technically we do, except for image threads.  But it can't be an image thread until you designate it as one.  ^.^

Generally-speaking, images on standard threads can't be larger than 640x480 in size, and usually can't be more than one.  -v-

So I resized your last one to display it in all its glory!!  ^v^

I do declare I love this picture too!  ^____^

QuoteYour dad's an M$ hater, eh ^_~ He should talk with my dad, the...*glup* Windows zealot (I wouldn't blame him though, he had a bad Mac experience)...*waits patiently for someone to ask...*

Besides that, though, your pop should see this commercial spoof then:

Really drives a wedge down that bipolar view of the OS world.  ^_____^

QuoteHAHAHAHAHA! Doubleplusfunny!

I can picture the rivalry between System 1-tan and PC DOS-tan being a very funny rivalry with antics like those!

With PC-DOS-tan being enough of a Command Line zealot to put even some Linuces to shame, yeah her ongoing rivalry with the early Mac-tans would be hilarious!  ^v^

QuoteWell, he used to be, but now that they've pretty much conquered the market, he's sorta like system 7-tan. He's lost his fighting spirit. T_T

Don't lose hope!  ^v^
We can still bring balance to the Force!  ^___^

QuoteAnyhow, I was wondering if there have been any OS-tan renditions of VMS...
And, would OpenVMS, if done as an OS-tan, be considered a different character than VMS

Was supposed to have made one by now, but surprise surprise,... /C-chan has been slow.  ^___^
(Haven't even finished UNIX-sama yet... ^^;)

Unlike traditional OS-tans, VMS-san would be something of the serious silent-type, with a mature beauty that fits her age and razor-sharp leadership skills that speak of decades of experience.  VMS and OpenVMS should in fact be the same person,... "VMS" back in her prime, when she used to dress more mainstream for mainstream clients, and "OpenVMS" as she currently stands now (something of a fringe vigilante figure living in a world dominated by Windows/Mac/Unix).  Freesia Yagyu from 'Jubei-Chan 2' always seemed to me like a good template for OpenVMS-tan, since I imagine she is quite powerful (perhaps powerful enough to take on a Linux-tan or UNIX-tan singlehandedly), but with the disadvantage of being essentially an "army of one" (her only allies compromised of yet eveb MORE fringe OS-tans,... -__-).

Physically-speaking, she should bear an uncomfortable resemblance to Windows NT, perhaps just a bit taller, more mature-looking and signficantly more battle-worn.  She has a passion for sharks that some people might find disturbing -- and in fact, even her cleaver is lined with reinforced shark teeth -- but rarely extends that same passion to her fellow OS-tans.  An independent OS-tan certainly has a much better chance of gaining her trust.   -v-

Can't wait to see her! She's sort of like the momma of all modern OS's, so she better be incredible :D

I imagined she'd be physically similar to NT-tan (I always thought she'd have silvery hair and eyes, though), but her mindset would be worlds apart.

QuoteReally drives a wedge down that bipolar view of the OS world. ^_____^

I'll say!  ;010

QuoteWell, he used to be, but now that they've pretty much conquered the market, he's sorta like system 7-tan. He's lost his fighting spirit. T_T

He should keep that fighting spirit! If you truly believe in something, keep on believing. Even if M$ has conquered the market.

Anyway, I've been researching odd Linux distros. Here are some interesting ideas I've come up with:

Pardus-san: An Anatolian leopard girl. She's known by her friends as being quite beautiful, as well as innovative and smart.

EvilEntity-tan: Was a Windows-fighting vampire. She 'plagued' the Windows family for but a year (although her name was really scarier than her attitude itself...she really was a failure, as she did not shape-shift into a bat, but a fat penguin, hindering any fast get-away); it was at this time that, one of the Windows-tans, say, Saseko decided to kill her.

Scientific Linux-tan: A somewhat scatterbrained, although efficient and thorough, scientist. She used to call herself 'Scientific Linux-tan, professor of High-energy physics. But when co-workers discovered she really had many other talents, she decided to change her title.

IPCop-tan: Is a professional security guard, for personal hire or to protect gatherings of OS-tans from outside intrusion.

Trinity Rescue Kit-tan: An "EMS" worker, who has saved many a Windows-tan's or Linux-Tan's life. She loves her job, even if sometimes she doesn't get a lot of recognition.

Hehe... well, the fact that's she's supposed to be incredible is what caused the delay in the first place.  Technically-speaking, she was SUPPOSED to have been my first OS-tan, but at this rate she'll end up being my last.  ^^;

[first OS-tan was AmigaOS, btw.  ^v^]

Doesn't look it, but she's VERY powerful and VERY old,..... and very.................. difficult......  Â¬__¬'

I still have my old preconcept sketch, as well as some musings about her character here,...

http://ostan-collections.net/post-4490.html#4490

QuoteI imagined she'd be physically similar to NT-tan (I always thought she'd have silvery hair and eyes, though), but her mindset would be worlds apart.

Silver hair could work.  ^__^
Might've been blue at one point, but age and a taxing (or should we say, "VAX"ing?) life will do that to a person.  ^^

And just WORLDS apart?  By GAWD, they'd be like from 2 different dimensions.  ^________^;
However, in typical M$ style, NT-tan has probably never been made aware of the... "facts".

As far as she's concerned, she's the only mother-figure around.  -.-

QuoteI'll say!

Kudos to whoever decided to personify Linux as a woman!  ^v^
Now if only the could actually air those on TV, the userbase would explode!  ^___^

QuoteHe should keep that fighting spirit! If you truly believe in something, keep on believing. Even if M$ has conquered the market.

Not for long.... `v'
We're clamping down on their hardware strategy to the right (Macs) and their "cheap-o" strategy to the left (Linux, cause nothing beats 'free').  If Leopard and Compiz-Beryl-equipped Linuces can be popularized sufficiently this year, we can capitalize on the grave dug by all the Vista issues.  ^.^
'Tis a very exciting time,... the very eve of a new revolution!  ^v^

Fufufu... talk about odd.  ^v^
I've only heard of Scientific Linux, and certainly Trinity sounds a lot like Linux Rescue CD (which helped me a lot setup my dual-boot).  ^.^

But would love to see Pardus-tan, as I love Turkish things.  ^v^
(especially Turkish apple tea -- damn good stuff, even if it does taste suspiciously like cider.... -v-')

I say go for it!  ^v^
Just don't spread yourself too thin, or you'll end up lost and wayward like me.  (another day, another chance to work on the Freespire/Linspire 4koma lost to work and troubleshooting... I do suck sometimes..... ^^')

Nothing wrong with taking time to think out a design, especially one as important as the "mother", Unix-sama. I myself have envisioned her much like you describe, powerful, old and wise, perhaps magical, and almost 'goddess' like.

I've always wondered why they don't have ads for Linux (obviously, no profit, but it would bring public attention). I even did my own spoof of those  Get a Mac ads:

I just wish Apple would call PC guy what he is...Windows guy! Although then, they'd have to introduce Unix guy, Linux girl, as well as others...and a riot would ensue XD

*Pats laptop running XP sympathetically* I know, K8...I'll always love you...least till you wear out...

I'm actually a Windows person myself, but I believe competition drives innovation and the bettering of OSs. If Mac and Linux are breathing down Windows' neck...M$ is going to have to make Windows better or lose precious $$. Same goes for Apple. But this cannot be achieved if M$ has 95% of the market! So in that way, I do hope Mac and Linux up the ante and steal people away from the Windows market ;010

[course, she used to be one too, so.... -v-]

But I do want to get her done sometime within my lifetime.... if for anything, because Kami-Tux has been waiting for it since October.  -.-'

O-M-G!!!!!!!!  That is fantastic, and eerily similar!  @__@
You sre those Novell guys weren't inspired by that?  ^___^

And yes, now that you mention it, they DO call the Windows Guy a "PC guy", don't they?  ^^'
At least now that I'm knee-deep in OS-tans, I know the fallacy of that,... cause you can run HUNDREDS of other OSes on x86 machines.  ^^'

Lest we forget the various flavors of Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, QNX, AROS, SkyOS, OS/2, eComStation, etc, etc, etc.....
Only fussy systems like RISC OS demand custom hardware.  ^___^

Oh yes, a riot would ensue and then some.  ^v^

Oh yes, once they've receded back to at least 40% of the market, then the revolution can be considered complete and we can lay off them for a while.  By then, hopefully we can have more even-handed software/hardware sharing.  ^^
Course, turning some of the older Windows (and consequently OS/2) into Open Source is automatic grounds for enshrinement.  I always told Kami-Tux that an Open Source Windows would be EXPLOSIVELY popular, and might be their last trump card in the event Windows does lose market share.  ^^

In any case, if all doesn't go well yet they still won't feel like sharing 3.1-sama's source code, at least M$ still has their XBOX and Zune fronts.... *snicker snicker* *pets Wii and Insignia Player*  ^.^'

QuoteI know what you mean. A few days back I came up with all these ideas for drawings! And now...all draw-d out. That's why I've been researching stuff.

You too?  Yeah, I'm still reading up a little more on Kubuntu, and studying the inner-workings of BASH.  On the side, I'm also resuming my Japanese studies so I can go back to translating the Mac Manga -- probably not for thine eyes, since it makes the antics of Homeo and Homeko look like Sesame Street, but it's very well drawn nonetheless.  ^___^

But don't worry,... Free-chan/Lin-chan will get done come hell or highwater,... even if I end up releasing a different pic prior to it.  ^^;

QuoteCE-tan. I'm going to put an image of a new character up every time I change rank *whistles while waiting for XP status*

WOW!  Really?!!  That is a gorgeous rendition of her, cause I couldn't exen recognize her.  ^____^

YEEHAW!!!  A-na-to-lia!!!  ^__^
I've always been something of a Byzantine history buff, so the region fascinates me.  ^^
Plus Turkey used to produce some of the world's most interesting banknotes.... ^.^

Nothing like old Turkish Liras to make you feel like a millionaire.... ^-^

Pardus-tan is pretty, no doubt about it-- but I guess since you can't really see much of her clothing (which is your specialty, hands-down ) I still have the wow factor lingering from your last two masterpieces.

I did cheat by taking a peak at your sketch gallery, so I do know the Scientific Linux is in the works.  ^___^

QuoteFree Windows would be awesome  But then again, how did M$ get the $ in their name?

Oh, that's so 2005.... ^__^
This is the future,... just recently Sun Microsystems threw in the towel and [virtually] decided to make their entire Solaris operating system open source (whereas before, OpenSolaris just cautiously fed the community a little bit of code here, a little bit of code there, and ultimately not getting much done.... ^^;)

Who's to say that in a few years, the entire worldwide computer industry embraces Open Source, forcing proprietary companies to get on board or be locked forever in the fringes.  ^__^'
Even a company like M$ could rollover to this if it meant some kind of continued revenue stream.

It might just take,.... a little....... reorganization.....  ^^;

*contemplates thought of Open Windows 3.1-sama -- or perhaps Open Windows 95 OSR 2.5-sama -- and drools*

QuoteI think in about, oh, 1-2 years M$ will be coming out with their version of the iPhone.

Please tell them to test that thing THOROUGHLY before release, ditch DRM, choose a more "Ubuntu" shade of brown, and avoid unsavory terms like "squirting".  Among other serious issues....  ^^;

QuoteOhoho!!! You called Homeko cute XD She may be a perv, but she's my OS's perv.

Ironically, thanks to the Mac Manga, I'm bound to say that Sonata-san, despite her cute and refined demeanor, is more of a closet pervert than Homeko could ever hope to be even if she were to write Yaoi for 100 years!  ^___^;

*writes "Upload Mac Manga" on To-Do list*

QuoteI might do some Mac-tan fanart...Maybe Leopard?

Given the 1,324,165 alternative renditions of Vista-tan, I'm appauled by the general lack of Leopard renditions.  Basically we only know of two (Aurora's and a similar pink-haired rendition by a Japanese artist), not including my own hybrid of the two.  -v-

A third would be much appreciated around here.  ^^
But I guess you might have noticed by now, but we appreciate quite a lot here.  ^__^

Scientific Linux:

She's good at all sorts of things...but she's always been a little hung up on high-energy physics ;) I finished this yesterday afternoon, but forgot to post it.

Speaking of which, I did the outline of Leopard-tan:

She's influenced by Aurora's rendition, but I came up with a lot of the clothes. I love doing frills, but frills are hardly futuristic...so I compromised..futuristic frills XD

Cuuuuue....  ^.^
Reminds me a bit of Ri Kohran from 'Sakura Wars' for some odd reason, but from your description I think that's appropriate.  ^^
Clothing has a bit of an elegant touch too, but I guess the highlights are in the book's easter eggs.  I see Microsoft and I'm guess Astrophysics (or maybe an Astro Boy manga?  ^^; ).  And either "High-Energy phisics" is just a minor mispelling, or its an intentional nod to the reality that geniuses aren't necessarily smart at everything.  ^^;

(I once knew an amazing math, music and computer prodigy that simply couldn't spell to save his life, and was somehow blown away by my ability to maneuver in MS-DOS at the time.  ^____^; )

QuoteShe's influenced by Aurora's rendition, but I came up with a lot of the clothes. I love doing frills, but frills are hardly futuristic...so I compromised..futuristic frills XD

With the big poof of hair trailing behind her, this makes her look very close to the legendary version 4 as well -- I love it!!!  ^V^

...well okay, I reckon you're gonna get bored with me liking every single thing you do, but I just can't help it.  -v-
It's really you're fault for drawing so well and enthusiastically.  ^___^

I'd like to comment more on the clothing, but I'd rather just save my excitement till you bring in the color.  Chances are, I'll probably be writing long and hard before I swoon outright.  -v-

QuoteWhen thinking up a new character, I usually focus on the personality, and the face...and I usually only do a head and partial body drawing. I usually leave full-body drawings (with all the clothes) to more developed characters.

I sorta do the same thing, but with chibis.  Just to be able to get the character concept down, I draw her in a stylized and cute way that need not take more than a few hours to complete.  Problem is that when designing serious characters like VMS or UNIX-sama, I can't possibly bring myself to chibify them.  It seems,........ sacriligious......  -v-'
So then comes the viscious cycle of trying to get them rendered full-bodied, but that just brings out the evil perfectionist in me, and the whole progress gets slowed down to a crawl.  -.-;

That, and the fact that I seem to attract pitiful chibi-haters doesn't really help with inspiration.  -v-

/C-chan is officially one sad pig.....  -.-

Look for Aurora-san pairing her with one of the iPod-tans.
Moral of the story:  never squirt an iPod.  ^^;

QuoteCan't wait to see it all finished

Actually, meant to say 2006.  I'll try to finish the entire vector sketch tonight -- usually once the sketch is out of the way, cleaning out the curves and adding shades/highlights (which shouldn't be that prominent in comedic 4komas to begin with) won't take much more.  -v-

QuoteNow now, I did two renditions of Vistan...so that's 1,324,167. But yes, there aren't enough Leopard-tans...and such an interesting idea for a character, time-travel and all

Assuming Apple doesn't screw up their momentum with Leopard, I think that might flip after April.  ^___^

I'd certainly rush out and get myself one A-S-A-P if they do in fact deliver some kind of "Tablet Mac" function -- I'd imagine that'd be any artist's dream, and could get me back into the habit of hand-sketching.  ^.^
(more like hand-assisting my vector illustrations, but either way it'd be great!)

QuoteBut wouldn't Pardus-tan want to wear an elegant headscarf?

If she actually is Turkish, not necessarily.  Probably wouldn't be able to wear one in some places.  ^__^

Aurora Borealis

Scientific Linux-tan looks very friendly, smart and professional! ;010

And that Leopard-tan rendition is fabulous! Good job with the frilly dress and frills! Not only do they look nice, they also keep with the futuristic + retro theme of my rendition! (Of course your picture will be even more fabulous in color!)

And thanks for saying that Zune-tan looked cute in a pathetic way because that was exactly what I was trying to go for with her apperance!

*sigh*  There's just so much fun stuff one could do with Zune-tan,.... but alas, so little time to get around to and still service all the other great characters.....  -v-

Makes you want to clone yourself several times to form your own art studio.  ^^

*sigh*

I suppose now that we have Leopard-tan in focus again, what else could we say about her character?  ^__^

I gave her freckles (more apparent in the URL link) because in only seemed natural a 'Leopard' girl would have them XD

Quotebut I guess the highlights are in the book's easter eggs. I see Microsoft and I'm guess Astrophysics (or maybe an Astro Boy manga? ^^; ). And either "High-Energy phisics" is just a minor mispelling, or its an intentional nod to the reality that geniuses aren't necessarily smart at everything. ^^;

Heehee...That was actually 'microbiology and astronomy,', basically the two branches of science that popped into my head first XD As for the "High-Energy phisics" thing, we'll say that's a nod to Scientific Linux's sometimes scatterbrained nature (Or my scatterbrained nature...never type, watch TV, and discus politics at the same time ;013)

QuoteProblem is that when designing serious characters like VMS or UNIX-sama, I can't possibly bring myself to chibify them. It seems,........ sacriligious...... -v-'

It does seem 'cute' characters lend themselves to chibis...still chibis do seem a bit under-respected.

QuoteLook for Aurora-san pairing her with one of the iPod-tans.
Moral of the story: never squirt an iPod. ^^;

iPod-tan vs. Zune-tan...sweet...

That would be awesome, and personally, with companies like Toshiba and Gateway making tablets, I'm surprised Apple aren't making tablets. (seeing as their comps are very art-oriented...) A tablet Mac would certainly be a step in the right direction for me buying one. *Still staring at Lenovo Thinkpad*
My computer is doing fine though, and if it follows the footsteps of my old Win98, I should be keeping 'K8' until, oh, 2009-10. If they don't have a tablet Mac by then, they never will ;)

QuoteBut wouldn't Pardus-tan want to wear an elegant headscarf?

In the cities of Turkey, most women dress quite western. In the country, the style is more traditional.

I wonder if she's seen future OS releases? Or gone in the past to meet with her 'ancestors?'

Man, where do I even begin.  ^___^
The clothing most absolutely blows me away!!  ^v^

The futuristic sleeves are a wonderful compliment to the preexisting longboots (or are they leggings here?), and the dress capitalizes on your expertise with pleated designs.  Plus a I say an Aero-like transparent overlay there,.... hehe, perhaps you know something we don't.... ?  `v'

*nudge nudge wink wink hopes-Bella-has-Apple-insider-information*

The retention of the "stop watch" was a nice nostalgic touch, but the addition of the gloves certainly accentuates the modernity.  And even though they were good before, this is the first time your eyes were downright hypnotic.  Almost like amber jewels,... excellent work, and clearly I'm seeing quantum leap enhancements in your drawing style.

And yeah, the freckles work for me.  ^__^

No problem, I have the same predicament as well.  ^^
Never draw, watch Jigokou Shoujo Futakomori, and listen to a political net stream at the same time, or you fall short on the pictures you promised Bella (see below.... ^^; )

Fufu... you know, with all the Linuces you draw, you could probably consider installing one on it by 2009.  That away it can keep K8-san running till WELL after 2009 (or at least get donated to a school that might have use for Edubuntu).  ^__^

But returning to Apple, they did pioneer the field with Newton, and they do have that Inkwell-whatsis,... so to have not released an official Tablet Mac of any kind by now seems almost insane.
Unless they're waiting for 100% touchscreen capabiities to go with it.  -.-

In any case, we'll find out soon enough.  ^^

QuoteI wonder if she's seen future OS releases? Or gone in the past to meet with her 'ancestors?'

Well I've never been a believer in TRUE time travel, in that I feel the universe evolves permanently, and to physically transform it to an earlier state would entail devolving all that and potentially destroying it.  Rather, it's probably safer to assume that time travel is really more "dimensional travel", in that you're essentially traveling to a residual universe that mirrors our own from 1 second, 1 minute, 1 hour, 1 year, 1 decade, 1 century, 1 millenia, etc ago.  Much in the same way that the stars we see in the sky are really just temporal snapshots of what they looked like eons ago, given the speed it takes for the light to reach us -- if we could physically warp to one of those stars, they might not even exist anymore....  -.-

Bottom line is, I think she can travel to the "past" all she wants and as often as she wants, but anything she does will never affect her native present.  So unfortunately, no pulling the rug underneath 95-tan while she and OS7-tan are locked in mortal combat.  -v-'

If she knows about the future, though, I wonder if we can ask here whether all Linuces have upgraded to Compiz-Beryl armor.  Or if Solaris-tan really did manage to soar after going 100% OSS.  ^___^
Of it Wii-tan really did manage to cremate anything that M$ and Sony threw her way.  ^.^

Fun stuff, I tell ya....  -v-

By the way, it's a little late, so instead of posting on another art thread, I hope you don't mind me dumping this here....

Couldn't finish all my vector sketching after all, but at least 2007 is done.  Should look a little more familiar to you.  ^.^
