YAY!  I only have one more thread to go, and it's full of fantastic artwork!!  ^v^

*unleashes GEYSER of blood at sight of eCOS-tan*

I'll be back later to reply to this with relish.  In the meantime, I want to get some artwork done for y'all.  ^___^

I've coordinated some things around so I can start having some more free time to devote to my side projects, including drawing.  Hope I can make it count.  ^.^

Bella

*gets on loudspeaker*

Cleanup in aisle three!

*gets out mop and bucket*

Why couldn't you just explode?

Aurora Borealis

But exploding would be messier and still someone would have to clean it up! ;012

*empties box full of leeches to clean up blood spill*
There! Much easier! But you might want to evacuate until they are done. They like live hosts too...

*dashes out*

Siya

*dashes in, then backpedals after noticing the leeches*

Uh...er...

*hops up onto a chair*

I'm afraid to look back on other pages to find more that I've missed, so I'll just comment on the pictures posted on page 36.

TSS/360 looks frighteningly cool!  I really like her asymmetrical style.

VMS/2003 Server-tan also looks frightening, but more aggressively so.  She definitely looks like she could (and will) kick butt.

WAITS and DTSS are both quite fascinating.  Awesome costumes and the DTSS's manipulation of electricity is an eerily wonderful attribute.

Is that eCOS-tan?  Dear heavens, she's going to kill me before the leeches do!  Super awesome, though!

Your DEC group picture looks like it's coming along wonderfully!  It looks rather amusing. ^^

Also, I noticed talkings of Michigan.  I would like to take this moment to mention that I currently reside in Michigan.  However, this will be the only reference of my residence so please keep this a secret from the other threads (I know they're out to get me <.<; ).

Bella

QuoteIs that another NH injoke?
Yeah…kinda. XD

QuotePun somewhat intended- she looks like she is ready to kick somone's *** and she simply looks great!

Thanks! :D

QuoteOh... I forgot about DOS Batch 11-tan and her psychoness!

Now now, Batch 11-tan isn’t psycho, she’s just “user un-friendly”

No Really, Roberto the stabbing robot on Futurama is scarily reminiscent of Batch 11-tan XD

QuoteI see... the blue hair is a throwback to her older sister (and I assume she has blue-purple eyes too?)

Probably…I dunno, that's why her eyes are closed ;)

QuoteHmm... How about giving her some blonde streaks in her hair?

That’s what I was thinking about doing…

Quote...Especially given all the conflict the DECs had with the Unices, VMS-sama vs. Unix-sama in particular!

I just hope that Ultrix-san doesn't hate the DEC-tans and vice-versa!

Ummm…that depends of your definition of “hate” ^^
Quote
Ooh! Very nice! (sorry, I cannot think of a more original comment at the moment.)

And seeing the first version of this picture, I saw some of the techniques you use and I think I can learn from them (most notably- your technique for drawing pleated skirts is more efficient than the technique I use)

Yeah, I just sketch out the basic form and then add the pleats using lines. If you want, I can always post the SVG, too.

QuoteCool! You are great at designing OS-tans and devising personalities for them even when there is not much info on the characters you want to design! (I on the other hand am not so good at that )

Some characters I can’t fathom good personalities for, despite plenty of RL references (AIX and VOS-tan might be two of these), but others just come to me the moment I read about them. A lot of the DECs have been this way.

Speaking of which, I thought up a few ideas for two VMS text editors -tans (one’s a -kun,  though): Eve and Red. Maybe I’ll elaborate in the Theories thread.

QuoteMentioning that she has a low rank brings up an interesting question: What is the hierarchy among the DEC-tans? Who is the highest-ranked, lowest-ranked or in-between?

I’ve wondered the exact same thing on many occasions…

Assuming the DECs used a system similar to an army (rather than a navy), I suppose any DEC OS-tans would be higher-ranking officers, while the program-tans (like aforementioned Red and Eve-tan) would be more akin lower-ranking officers or maybe even soldiers. Supposing they’d be some of the higher in rank, I think TOPS-sama would be a general; VMS-sama, perhaps a colonel?

QuoteBoot time in HALF A SECOND... OR LESS?! That is just incredible! Wow! I think she would be the fastest OS-tan around (and with great stamina to match)!

But no form of timekeeping? Uh oh... That's not good at all! Especially with scenarios like this:

some person: Congratulations, OS/8-san! You are the winner of our grand prize! To claim your prize, sign here!
OS/8: Sure! *signs name* But what is this other line for?
some person: You also need to put down the time too.
OS/8: AAAAAAAUGH! I don't know! I never knew the time! AWWWW DARNIT!

Haha! Also, I suppose on many occasions she would awake at two in the morning and try to get everybody up because she thought it was time for breakfast. I feel sorry for any of her bunkmates XD

TS/360-tan I have to work on…and I didn’t draw Server 2003-tan, but VMS-sama is mine :P

WAITS and DTSS I have to work on some more, but I’m glad you like their designs. I’m happy eCOS-tan is gaining a little fandom, I really like her too. And I hope to add TOPS-sama to the DEC picture, as well, so it has a while to go before it’s finished.

I'm happy you took the time to comment, and that you're visiting us a bit more often, though!  ;010

And hey! You're a Michigander? Don't worry, I won't blab to all the other threads :P

C-Chan

Just to let you know, this thread is up next for my daily swoonage [just need to disappear for a bit].  ^___^

However, I've been doing some thinking....

Given that Aurora has school and Bella has.... well,... something, I'm sure.... and I have my Python training (and catching up to a shark-load of drawing), would it be better if I just cap my response rate so that it doesn't divert much time away from our responsibilities elsewhere?

Say something like two replies a day?  '__'

Added after 11 hours 6 minutes:

Sorry for the week long delay on this reply.  Without further ado.... ^___^

QuoteWeeeeelll, duh! I was gonna fix that. I just hadn't thought of the proper hair arrangement :P

Ah yes, didn't expect you to leave it like that.  Just figured you could cover it up... nau.  ^^'

Quote
This is intentional. I do suppose her attitude would be rather like CTSS-sama, as well; but somehow I see DTSS-san as being a bit more in-touch with the common people. DTSS was built almost entirely by students at Dartmouth, and was used by something like 80% of the students at the colledge--even non-scientific and technical students were expected to know some programming :O

I agree with that.  We certainly can't make them ALL stuffy... as long as there existed ITS-san, WAITS-san, UNIX-sama and DTSS-sama, ideological balance was maintained.  ^____^

Quote....?

Ah well, too late now... unless you're still in Michigan, you're free to watch that movie [Roger & Me] all you want.  It deals with the economic collapse of Flint, Michigan in the late 80's/early 90's.

Quote
Ah, Detroit...I've seen some crazy dirvers in my day, but it's like they funneled all the boldest from around the country into that city and gave them a pass to go as fast as they want.... :P

Sounds like Mexico, D.F. to me....  ^^;

QuoteAs for Canada, the closest I've been is Niagra Falls, NY, peering over the boarder. ZOMG I saw a TGI Friday's in Canada! No wai!!!

*sighs amorously*  Gyaaaaaah!  That sure brings back memories... ^___^
I wonder if that Skylon Tower is still there.  ^-^

QuoteWell, each chapter is only supposed to be 10 to 15 or so pages long...it's not...that bad...even though it'll add up quite quicky (80 pages at the least @____@).

*passes out*  xvx

QuoteAnd future Linux-tan will really just be our present Linux-tan. I think...?

...With Compiz Fusion armor, I'm sure.  ^___^

Quote*hands C-Chan his nosebleed blood-bucket back*

Well I already geysered once... but... oh what the heck... ^___^

*shoots out geyser of noseblood once more*  >v<

.
.
.

Ah crap.... feeling.... queezy.... ugh....  X___x

*passes out from blood loss*

Still would like to see what her right hand looks like in the final (currently just a nub), and her left foot might need a bit more elongation.  Other than that, eCOS-chan is gorgeous -- the pose is sleek and powerful, and more importantly, very dynamic.  Not sure if you posed for this one too, or used a martial arts reference shot, but I have to say it's very characteristic of her!  ^-^

The ponytail flips and sways convincingly, and is just the right size.  Eidos couldn't have done better with Lara Croft's ponytail engine. Same goes with the hair bangs, which swish over her face with marked precision as well.  ^^

The dress is spot-on perfect for the girl -- slick and modern, and with trademark Bella-hime fold-work, you leave no doubt in any of our minds that you're the fashion queen!  Silver brass knuckles are a clever touch, and the inclusion of the armor is much appreciated (as well as the little extra heel spike for when she REALLY gets serious).

Thank you as always for your top-notch work!  ^o^

Quote
Haha! XD
I've actually had the time to think about FreeVMS-chan and her relationship with VMS-sama. At first I thought she'd be rather like a fangirl; but now, somehow, I think she'd be more like the daughter VMS-sama never had...

I anticipated a similar revelation for OS/2-tan (with regards to eComStation-tan), but I figure VMS-sama would have felt this way much much sooner.  ^^

QuoteOh, I suppose it would have started with FreeVMS-chan hitching a ride with the CIOST (or being rescued by them). While very skillful at her given trade (?) and playful, she would have been more of an annoyance to the group than anything; but VMS-sama, intrigued by the young girl's adoration of her, and their uncannily alike personalities, would have prevented any plans to rid her from the group.

You have no objections from me, cause that sounds about right!  ^__^
Regarding her trade... tough call,... it depends a lot on what the system is being used for while still in development.  Certainly can't be of much tactical importance, if the other members were eager to get rid of her (even someone as unsociable as TRON-sama is tolerated for the sake of her craft).  ^^'

In keeping with the aquatic theme, suppose she ran a small bait stand (or at her age, more like a hole-in-the-wall cart or tray).  And the trouble from which she was rescued from was her trying to make a couple of rowdy -kuns pay up (but ultimately biting off a little more than she could chew).  She'd know well more than a thing or two about bait (and probably enough about fishing to offer pointers to newbies), and probably puts her playfulness to good use by custom-making some very adorable-looking lures.

But past that, though.... yeah, perhaps a bit of an annoyance.  ^^;

QuoteOZONE-chan's story would be similar, and I suppose her and FreeVMS-chan are something of "sisters".

In that case,... on she goes in the panel!  ^___^

Quotevi-kun I see as younger looking (as vi is simplistic). I think he'd have short, light hair and glasses; I think he'd be friends with Unix-sama, BSD-san, and the older Unixen.

Emacs-kun would be just as old as vi, but would be older looking and perhaps a bit more handsome. Somehow I see him as a little on the shaggy, hippie-looking side (just a bit). He'd love ice cream (as an untrue legend says Emacs got its name from a chain of Boston ice cream shops), and be an adent follower of Stallman and his GNU crusade. I see him as more friendly with the Open Source types, but he also like to mingle with the OSXes.

Fufufu...!  ^___^
I'm so happy you acknowledged my suggestions regarding Vi/Emacs -- while I'm not a -kun fan by any stretch of the imagination, I do appreciate a little variety here and there.  Besides,... what better way to represent the perceived fanaticism of the Editor Wars than by turn the Unices/Linuces into real ticket-holding, banner-making, seminar-attending, book-signing fans?  ^________^

I hadn't really thought to deep about their physical appearances, but Emacs-kun seems right on the dot, and Vi-kun has the kind of traits that would easily win the admiration of UNIX-sama.  ^^

I also imagine that they're ability to defend themselves is non-existent -- they're both 100% intellgentia, and violence is beneath them.  Not that it would be in any way, shape or form necessary, what with VIP treatment from some of the most POWERFUL women in the OS-tan world. ^^;

QuoteOn this note...does Ruby on Rails deserve a -tan yet...?

No.  For the love of ALL that is HOLY, please don't take on more stuff to draw....  ^_______________^

QuoteWhoa... You're not used to farmland? I guess I cannot relate to that because I live in the Midwest and I have my whole life! ^^;

Aha!  A clue!.  ^___^
*jots down in notes*

QuoteThe DEC family picture is looking good so far! Ha ha! Even though the DEC-tans are supposed to be professional, that doesn't stop them from a little family shenanigans here and then!

Now that I think about it, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have the old Commodore-tans open up a little every once in a while (when off-duty, of course).  That picture certainly serves as inspiration (although I'll say more about it later).  ^.^

Quote
Yeah, I've mostly lived in either very oceanic settings or mountainous, nothern ones, so I feel most at home either near the sea or in the mountains...though, honestly, I feel safer in the latter.

I'd like to say "touche", but.... Le sigh.... *curses fate* -.-

QuoteAlso, I noticed talkings of Michigan. I would like to take this moment to mention that I currently reside in Michigan. However, this will be the only reference of my residence so please keep this a secret from the other threads (I know they're out to get me <.<; ).

Know the feeling, brother.... >.>;

QuoteAnyhow, here, have the latest version of the DEC picture:

Ah finally!  Bella-hime's Tour De Force in progress!  At last I get to comment about it.  ^___^

Well okay... HALF comment on them, since Aurora-hime and Siya-san have already pretty much offered ample swoonage on my behalf as far as the character portrayals go.  It's a real treat seeing just ONE of your characters on display, but now you have a full roster of SEVEN, with three more in the works.  ^.^

I think I see now what you meant by the art style -- although personally, it really DOES have more of an Anime cel-shade feel.  Simplistic, but to the point and effective at conveying emotions.  While some corners could use a little extra finesse (e.g., RSTS-tan's hair tips and hand), I tink the approach is not only an obvious time-saver, but it also lends the picture a vibrant, whimsical feel.  A perfect style when trying to convey RT-chan being belittled by Vaxeln and RSTS, and Ultrix-san being sandwiched by DEC-tans.   I much look forward to seeing how well you end up drawing TOPS-sama (whom I agree, probably could take after Cornelia), especially since (based on the sketchwork) she seems rather close to RSX-sama (aka, Mama VMS, aka2, GrandMa Windows).  ^>^

Quote
TSS 8, what we know:
-Was a small timesharing system started in the late 1960s.
-Ancestor of RSTS
-Ran on the PDP-8

Yeah, not a lot of info to go on.

What I pulled out of this air:
-Somehow I see her as small, mousy, with light hair and glasses (maybe). Being something of a peacenik-type (XD) dislikes being in the DEC military, and probably has a low rank (maybe even just being some kind of worker)

How about a mechanic?  ^___^
Or if you're thinking REALLY ancient times, a small and mousy blacksmith (sounds like an oxymoron, but then this coming from the pig who made a young-looking ancestral Windows-tan into a mason).  ^^;

Funny how so little information can lead to unparalleled crafty alternatives.   ^___^

QuoteOS/8, what we know:
-Ran on PDP-8
-Used Concise Command Language, which gave in an operating enviroment similar to TOPS-10. CCL was considered a very advanced language, even compaired to some modern ones. Some commands made their way into VMS.
-Could boot in under one-half a second
-Could be reconfigured without rebooting
-Practiced no form of timekeeping. Y2K problems came early for OS/8!

OS/8-tan, what I pulled out of the air:
-I see her as having dark, short hair. She's closest with TOPS-sama. While an excellent orator, she has no capasity for keeping time (IOW, she has no internal clock). She's a bit on the lanky side and is very fast.

Fufu... boots in half a second cause she really doesn't have too much to boot -- still, that's pretty impressive by anys standards. ^___^

Approve the description too. Especially love your later suggestion that she had a nasty habit of waking everyone at the wee hours of the morning.  ^v^

==========================

Well, could've done better, but that's as much response stamina as I can muster today.  Since it's a weekend, I'll go all-out with my replies beginning tomorrow.  ^____^

Bella

QuoteJust to let you know, this thread is up next for my daily swoonage [just need to disappear for a bit]. ^___^

Say something like two replies a day? '__'

You have no idea…X___X

Sounds like it could be a good idea, but my post time-saving tactic is to only reply to posts that I feel I have something to say about. Not that I don’t (try to) read through relevant posts--it’s just that I don’t think I have to respond to every single point if I don’t have something to bring to the table.

For example, I read a bit of your and Aurora’s recent discussion on economics…while what I read was fairly interesting, I didn’t feel that I could really bring anything to said discussion. Thus I cut down on my post, saving people from having to answer any possible counter-points. I guess?

QuoteI agree with that. We certainly can't make them ALL stuffy... as long as there existed ITS-san, WAITS-san, UNIX-sama and DTSS-sama, ideological balance was maintained. ^____^

I suppose the attitude of the given OS-tan is based on the OSes use. Little academic OS-tans would be a great deal looser, while big corporate types would be more stuffy.

QuoteAh well, too late now... unless you're still in Michigan, you're free to watch that movie [Roger & Me] all you want. It deals with the economic collapse of Flint, Michigan in the late 80's/early 90's.

Uhm…no…

*gestures to come closer*

*whispers*

I didn’t use any reference shots, just a stick figure. I do have a secret formula, however--I try to make the pose as fluid as possible. It’s easier to explain what I did with a picture.

I drew guidelines like this while sketching it. I wanted to convey motion and I wanted each part of her body to be a continuation of the last, if that makes sense.

QuoteThe ponytail flips and sways convincingly, and is just the right size. Eidos couldn't have done better with Lara Croft's ponytail engine. Same goes with the hair bangs, which swish over her face with marked precision as well. ^^

Funny you should mention that, I did add a bit of Lara Croft inspiration (minus the fanboy fanservice XD)

Thanks, I had a lot of fun with this costume. :D

QuoteI anticipated a similar revelation for OS/2-tan (with regards to eComStation-tan), but I figure VMS-sama would have felt this way much much sooner. ^^

Ah, is this why you’ve hinted at eComStation-tan being more akin to OS/2-tan’s daughter than sister…?

QuoteYou have no objections from me, cause that sounds about right! ^__^
Regarding her trade... tough call,... it depends a lot on what the system is being used for while still in development.

Um…I dunno…I suppose it’s mostly a hobbyist system…I always saw FreeVMS-chan as being a bit like Ed from Cowboy Bebop, a nuisance to most, very mischievous, and sometimes off in her own world, but still useful at times.

QuoteCertainly can't be of much tactical importance, if the other members were eager to get rid of her (even someone as unsociable as TRON-sama is tolerated for the sake of her craft). ^^'

I drew up an Emacs and Red (a VMS text editor)-kun, as well as…I think it's vi-kun. I saw your replies in the theories thread.

That's pretty funny that they're all powerless and depend on the OS-tans to help them. XD

QuoteI'd like to say "touche", but.... Le sigh.... *curses fate* -.-

That’s how immediate family is…they lived in the Midwest for a long time, and spent some time in the southeast; but when they came to the northeast…they realized this was going to be their home…

QuoteAh finally! Bella-hime's Tour De Force in progress! At last I get to comment about it. ^___^

Hair color I’m still thinking up for TOPS-sama…

But I found out something rather disconcerting. TOPS-10 and TOPS-20 are entirely unrelated and share different histories; but TOPS-20 did resurface as Tenex, and is sometimes called Twenex. So should TOPS-sama represent TOPS-10, and should I think up a TOPS-20 (aka Tenex or Twenex)-tan? I’m all for combining similar OSes into one character, but I think their different histories and uses warrant two different characters.

There’s some good material for a TOPS-20 (Who I will furthermore refer to as Tenex)-tan; VMS-sama would have a rivalry going with her. For one thing, DEC abandoned Tenex in favor of VMS, and asked Tenex users to move to VMS. But many, out of spite, moved to Unix instead!

I guess Tenex-tan’s troops would have been left without a leader after she got discharged from the DEC military; left without a commanding officer they would have had VMS-sama put in charge. But many would have rejected this in no uncertain terms, defecting to instead follow Unix-sama or her daughters! @___@’

QuoteYou have no idea…X___X

Poor Bella-hime!
I was right!  I inundate the poor girl with TONS of stuff to write! WAAAAAAH!!!!  ;^0^;

QuoteSounds like it could be a good idea, but my post time-saving tactic is to only reply to posts that I feel I have something to say about. Not that I don’t (try to) read through relevant posts--it’s just that I don’t think I have to respond to every single point if I don’t have something to bring to the table.

Oh, you might have noticed I've tried to do the same thing since my retirement.  Sometimes it works.  ^__^

But often times I just find some oddball way of having a thing to say about EVERYTHING, and the whole system just comes crumbling down.  -v-

So guess I'll try the response capping starting today.  And since I'm already WAY over 2 posts today, guess this'll be my last.  ^^;

I'll make my guidelines more explicit:  the maximum is 2 LARGE posts per day (meaning posts in response to something longer than a single paragraph in size), not including additional posts made to upload artwork.  An exception will be made in case there's an explicit request for an ASAP answer (although I doubt there'll ever be the need for one).  ^.^

If at all possible, I'll announce the next two threads I plan to reply to before I "clock out".  ^___^

QuoteNo, I’m back in my native habitat of the Easten Coahst…for now T___T

Yay!  In that case, you should've said so earlier!  Need to throw you a homecoming parade!  ^-^

Oh wait,... is that what "homecoming parades" refer to, nowadays?  T__T;

QuoteYeah, it's there! That’s the space-needle ripoff, right? :P

I'd rather say it's more a Toronto CN Tower rip-off,  but yeah... guess that's the one.  ^.^

Back in the good ol' days, the basement level used to have THE LARGEST VIDEOGAMES ARCADE that I'd ever seen in my life.  Doubt it's like that anymore, since coin-up arcades are now back there with dinosaurs.

QuoteI didn’t use any reference shots, just a stick figure. I do have a secret formula, however--I try to make the pose as fluid as possible. It’s easier to explain what I did with a picture.

Wow, in that case that's even more impressive.  ^___^

It makes a kind of judo-based sense, you're right.  On the same token, though it also requires a comfortable mastery of human anatomy depiction, since you don't want to flow a particular body part in an unnatural direction/angle.

QuoteAh, is this why you’ve hinted at eComStation-tan being more akin to OS/2-tan’s daughter than sister…?

Yeppers.  ^___^
Course, there's already way too many past/present/future storylines to manage, so don't feel that has to be canon law or anything.

QuoteThat's pretty funny that they're all powerless and depend on the OS-tans to help them. XD

Especially Red-kun, who LOOKS like he can kick arse, but in reality wouldn't bother to lift a finger for anything.  ^^;

Then again, this only really makes OS-tan society more "ant-like" if you think about it -- BILLIONS of females, and only a handful of males to serve as acrobatic entertainment for all and personal enjoyment for the queen(s).

QuoteBut I found out something rather disconcerting.

I think I would go for a separate Tenex-tan character, if only because you've already supplied enough material to make her an interesting addition.  Otherwise, I'll play it a la EXEC-sama and just the obscurity of ancient history to blur fact a little bit.  ^________^;

You know... for the same of efficiency.  ^v^;

Alrighty, and guess this concludes today's C-chan Response Session.  ^___^

Tomorrow I plan to get to the long-overdue response to Bella's OS-tan Manga Thread, as well as some backlog swoonage for Xenix-sama and Chibi Solaris-sama in Aurora's got an OS-tan art thread (btw, might be time to shorten the title a tad... ^.^;).

Bella

QuotePoor Bella-hime!
I was right! I inundate the poor girl with TONS of stuff to write! WAAAAAAH!!!! ;^0^;

No, no, I didn’t say you were inundating me with tons of writing; life is inundating me with tons of…everything…^^

Okay, not right this moment, but give me about one week or so…I fear I may become quite absent once more -__-

QuoteOh, you might have noticed I've tried to do the same thing since my retirement. Sometimes it works. ^__^

But often times I just find some oddball way of having a thing to say about EVERYTHING, and the whole system just comes crumbling down. -v-

So guess I'll try the response capping starting today. And since I'm already WAY over 2 posts today, guess this'll be my last. ^^;

I agree. Quite often I’ll just have to reply to something, no matter how OT it is…not that this is ever a big problem for me, I usually set aside a bit of time each day to write a few responses, and then get to the rest on another day.

But let us not forget some very interesting discussions in the past were far from on-topic. Some great character designs and backstories started as just a passing thought. So something can be said for getting off the beaten trail a bit.

QuoteYay! In that case, you should've said so earlier! Need to throw you a homecoming parade! ^-^

Oh wait,... is that what "homecoming parades" refer to, nowadays? T__T;

Wha? I thought I mentioned this, like, three weeks ago?

QuoteI'd rather say it's more a Toronto CN Tower rip-off, but yeah... guess that's the one. ^.^

Back in the good ol' days, the basement level used to have THE LARGEST VIDEOGAMES ARCADE that I'd ever seen in my life. Doubt it's like that anymore, since coin-up arcades are now back there with dinosaurs.

Awesome! But you’d be surprised how many videogame arcades I still see around.

QuoteWow, in that case that's even more impressive. ^___^

It makes a kind of judo-based sense, you're right. On the same token, though it also requires a comfortable mastery of human anatomy depiction, since you don't want to flow a particular body part in an unnatural direction/angle.

Well, maybe I wasn’t completely reference-less. But I didn’t have any reference pictures in that exact pose if that’s what you were wondering.

QuoteYeppers. ^___^
Course, there's already way too many past/present/future storylines to manage, so don't feel that has to be canon law or anything.

And as we’ve postulated before, the world of OS-tans kinda blurs the line between sister and daughter…

QuoteEspecially Red-kun, who LOOKS like he can kick arse, but in reality wouldn't bother to lift a finger for anything. ^^;

Oh I do suppose Red-kun would try to get in fights…

…would he win any, though…? XD

QuoteThen again, this only really makes OS-tan society more "ant-like" if you think about it -- BILLIONS of females, and only a handful of males to serve as acrobatic entertainment for all and personal enjoyment for the queen(s).

Uh…okay…um…what do you…? Yeah, I better not ask…O_o

But I dunno if OS-tan society is that gender imbalanced; I certainly do think the greater deal of nobility and leadership (IOW, the OS-tans) are female, while the lower classes (program, file, hardware-tans, etc) have a more even balance of male and female.

‘Course, when we get RL industry folk involved (like the different “Fathers”), then we see a lot more men.

QuoteI think I would go for a separate Tenex-tan character, if only because you've already supplied enough material to make her an interesting addition. Otherwise, I'll play it a la EXEC-sama and just the obscurity of ancient history to blur fact a little bit. ^________^;

You know... for the same of efficiency. ^v^;

Well, I’ll have to think up a physical design, but then again the DECs have always come quite easily to me...

Must be a New Englander thing ;)

QuoteAlrighty, and guess this concludes today's C-chan Response Session.

You know, I’d really like to hear what you have to say about my proposed chapter ideas, maybe even a bit more so than on the current chapter. Not that I want to burden you with a ton more responses--it’s just that I like hearing a different perspective on my own ideas before I put them down on paper.

…until I noticed the clue above it.

Bella

So, I have a few semi-finished-ish picture to present!

Yay, TOPS 10-sama has been added! I may or may not add more of the DEC-tans as I design them, though.

Woot! The VMS-sama/eCOS-chan picture! I call it Fire and Ice, because, well, it just seems to fit. FYI I did finish eCOS-tan's other hand, but it ended up a moot point. Background was just kinda thrown in cause I couldn't think of a better one :P

Hey, it's an unfinished vector sketch of chibi CP/CMS and TSS/360-tan. And no, CP/CMS-tan IS NOT trying to off TSS/360-tan XD

Blue + gray/white color scheme of CP/CMS-tan is a nod to her IBM heritage. I figure her anthropomorphism would probably be a hawk, although I've considered a bear in the past. I also though archery would be a good skill for CP/CMS-tan.

To recap on her character:

Quote-In addition to its role as the ancestor of the VM family, CP/CMS played an important role in the development of operating system theory, in the design of IBM's System/370 and later product lines, in the creation of the time-sharing industry, and in the creation of a self-supporting user community that anticipated today's free software movement. She would be quite a prolific old lass.
-CP/CMS was first released in 1968, and last released in 1972; a version of CP/CMS lives today under the name of VM/370; so I guess CP/CMS-tan would still be alive.
-It belongs to the VM family of IBM mainframes, the logo of which is a green teddy bear. Perhaps CP/CMS-tan's anthropomorphism should be a bear.
-Considered the "mother of all IBM mainframe OSs"

-CP/CMS had three distict versions:
Quote:
* CP-40/CMS, an important "one-off" research system that established the CP/CMS virtual machine architecture
* CP-67/CMS, a reimplementation of CP-40/CMS for the IBM System/360-67, and the primary focus of this article
* CP-370/CMS, a reimplementation of CP-67/CMS for the System/370 â€" never released as such, but instead becoming the foundation of IBM's VM/370 operating system (announced in 1972 and still in use)

For the sake of simplicity, I will likely make only one CP/CMS-tan, however.

-License was the IBM Type-III Library (free in source code form at no charge to IBM customers, without support). While debatable, CP/CMS is considered by many to be one of the first examples of open source software! I wonder if along with ITS-san, CP/CMS-tan would be a role model for Linux-sama?
-was built in IBM's Cambridge Scientific Center, an R&D department with strong ties to MIT's Project MAC (responsible for Multics' creation). The Cambridge Scientific Center was even housed in the same building as Project MAC. And while not derived from CTSS in a "genetic way", CP/CMS was strongly influenced by CTSS (as much as Multics). Methinks this would make for a good backstory between Multics-sama and CP/CMS-tan. I mean, both were "born" at the same place, and had the same teacher; although, Multics-sama probably would have received more attention (as CTSS was used to build Multics on, and CP/CMS was merely based on CTSS).

- CP/CMS is made of two components:

Quote:
* CP, the Control Program, created the virtual machine environment. The widely-used version was CP-67, which ran on the S/360-67. (The research system CP-40 established the architecture. A third version, CP-370, became VM/370.) Instead of explicitly dividing up memory and other resources among users, which had been the traditional approach, CP provided each user with a simulated stand-alone System/360 computer, able to run any S/360 software that ran on the bare machine. This gave each user what was, in effect, a private computer system.

* CMS, the Cambridge Monitor System (and also Console Monitor System â€" but renamed Conversational Monitor System in VM) was a lightweight single-user operating system, for interactive timesharing use. By running many copies of CMS in CP's virtual machines â€" instead of multiple copies of large, traditional multi-tasking operating systems â€" the overhead per user was less. This allowed a great number of simultaneous users to share a single S/360.

I have no idea what this means for her character. However, it did have user security that was similar to Multics.
-Was considered a "poor cousin" of IBM's other OSs; while a revolutionary system, it was quite shunned at the time in favor of more primative batch systems. But it rose above limited resources and company politics, to create an enduring and important technical legacy, a fiercely loyal user base, major derivative systems in the time-sharing industry, and, ultimately, a heritage as the grandparent of major 21st century products from IBM (more and more parallels to Multics-sama, I see).
-IBM submitted a proposal to Project MAC. However, IBM's proposal was not well received: MIT chose GE as the MULTICS system vendor. The fallout from this event led directly to CP/CMS.

There's more, but this is all I've read about so far. Right now my head is...kinda spinning after reading about CP/CMS...I still have next to no ideas for a CP/CMS-tan (or -sama) X___X

TSS/360-tan is pretty self explanatory...

DEC Family photo: Cool! I like how you made it look like a photograph too!

And TOPS-san (TOPS 10, right?) is very pretty! And she's got medals, and a cape! Extra coolness!

VMS + eCOS pic: As mentioned earlier, great poses with both characters- really shows of both of their personalities and why any sensible person would not mess with them! And the background is just plain awesome! It's kinda psychedelic and goes perfectly with both characters and the sunburst in the upper left with its radiating rays amplifies the intensity of the whole picture! ;010

CP/CMS + TSS/360 chibis: Sooooo cute! I know I shouldn't be saying that about any Mainframe-tans but in chibi form they are so cute! I also really like how you did the eyes!

Just doing a little warm-up swoonage before I get to the main event.   ^___^

QuoteDEC Family photo: Cool! I like how you made it look like a photograph too!

Luckily, I think I can fit in the rest of the DEC-tans. Tenex, TSS-8, OS/8, VMS, and of course the ghost of Batch/11-tan :P

QuoteAnd TOPS-san (TOPS 10, right?) is very pretty! And she's got medals, and a cape! Extra coolness!

I probably should have added more detail to those medals...oh well, I sacrificed detail for speed...

Thank you! The background I whipped up in a few minutes, I thought up a grandiose fight scene with a bunch of shadowy figures they're wailing on, but again...a sacrifice of detail for getting 'er done. The hardest part was the export, cause it used a lot of blurring...

QuoteCP/CMS + TSS/360 chibis: Sooooo cute! I know I shouldn't be saying that about any Mainframe-tans but in chibi form they are so cute! I also really like how you did the eyes!

Well, I think that these would be a few of the last down-to-earth Mainframe-tans before their egos...and height...got atmospherically huge.

The eyes I like experimenting with, cause I'm always looking for ways to try new styles while retaining my own.

And C-Chan exploding? NO WAI!!!! @__@

Well at last, I get to comment on these.  ^_________^;

I see what you mean by TOPS-sama looking like a certain someone from Code Geass.  Certainly does work though, as it gives her a very graceful-yet-stern look of authority to her, and well who can say no to those cat-like eyes and lush purple hair.  ^___^
Also noticed that she's got quite the............ I'll call it "asset"........ not sure if it's intentional, but it's an interesting contrast with the flatter RSX11-sama.  Can we say "Hot Mama TOPS-sama? [hey, it rhymes!] ^___^

I think I already swooned bucketfuls before with the other characters, but do have to admire the tactical shading you've used -- top notch work, especially for so many characters!  ^v^

But... the doggie's gone?  @__@

QuoteWoot! The VMS-sama/eCOS-chan picture! I call it Fire and Ice, because, well, it just seems to fit. FYI I did finish eCOS-tan's other hand, but it ended up a moot point. Background was just kinda thrown in cause I couldn't think of a better one :P

NICE-U!!!  ^___^

A bit shocked, though, since I thought this was a duel scene between them -- on the other hand, you did explicitly say it was a duel between VMS-sama and 2k3-chan, so since that was scrapped probably the duel was too.  ^^'
But it still works -- and certainly allows for the kind of contrasting background you set up (and besides, they're more likely to partner up against foes than duel one another regularly).  ^___^

Shadework once again is fantastic, as is the highlighting (particularly exquisite on VMS-sama's waving strands).  It's not entirely perfect, though -- unless they're not supposed to be together, the direction of the light indicates that VMS-sama's head/arms should cast a shadow over eCOS-chan's arm (as well as her right bang).  Also eCOS-chan's armor still doesn't look completely metallic; on the other hand, all the metal on VMS-sama's side is spot-on.  The lighting on the cleaver is downright supreme.  ^___^

BWAHAHA!!!  Now you know why I asked for chibis for a potential B-day gift.  Too cute!  Adorably cute!  And very Animesque (more so, perhaps, if we tightened or outright eliminated the noses).  ^^

Surprising amount of detail went to clothing I see, despite the fact that they're chibis, and vector sketches no less.  They certainly wear the kind of elaborate, gaudy, Classical-era attire that the current  Mainframe-tans are notorious for (except for z/OS-sama, which is much more futuristic, but still elaborate and gaudy).  ^^;
Bucket-loads of praise have to go to the hair, though -- CP/CMS-sama's killer bang-cowlick-ponytail triage is a knock-out combination (especially paired with those fierce hawk eyes), while TSS 360-sama's doe-eyed look and beautifully gray hair ribbons make her look cute enough to squeeze (a start contrast to her more "goddess-like" appearance in last page's full-sized pic.  ^.^

I do agree with Aurora-hime that the eyes are very well done for these chibis,... though I might add that CP/CMS-sama's eyes could use a little dab of pure white to their gloss.  More for the dramatic contrast.  ^__^

QuoteWell, I think that these would be a few of the last down-to-earth Mainframe-tans before their egos...and height...got atmospherically huge.

...Much to the joy and pleasure of C-chan's everywhere. ^__________^

But don't mind me, please continue....  ^.^

Sigh...sorry for not being able to check in more often...this is another one of my hectic times of the year, before my beloved "fall lull" and subsequent "winter lull". Come October I should be able to check in quite a bit more, and by mid October I'm sure you won't be able to get rid of me ^^

No, it was supposed to be a duel scene between VMS and Server 2003-tan, but I got board with Server 2003-tan, and decided to add eCOS-tan instead. I will see what I can do to improve it, though...

QuoteBWAHAHA!!! Now you know why I asked for chibis for a potential B-day gift. Too cute! Adorably cute! And very Animesque (more so, perhaps, if we tightened or outright eliminated the noses). ^^

Surprising amount of detail went to clothing I see, despite the fact that they're chibis, and vector sketches no less. They certainly wear the kind of elaborate, gaudy, Classical-era attire that the current Mainframe-tans are notorious for (except for z/OS-sama, which is much more futuristic, but still elaborate and gaudy). ^^;

Thank you! These are in progress too, so they're nowhere near finished.

Quote...Much to the joy and pleasure of C-chan's everywhere. ^__________^

But don't mind me, please continue.... ^.^

*wags tail giddily*

Uh oh, C-Chan's giddy...

...dare I show him his birthday gift (which is still in beta)....?

SURPRISE!

Both horses are based on pictures I've taken. I kinda wanted the horses to represent hard drives and their size, with is why PCLOS's horse is much larger than SAM-chan's. PCLOS-tan's horse is an Arabian, considered the most ancient of all "modern breeds"; this is one of my favorite breeds of horse. They are famed for their nimbleness, hardiness, and adaptablity, and known for their great intuition and intelligence; but derided by some as being too difficult and hotheaded. Arabians are probably one of the few horse breeds that can, quite easily, outwit their riders, learn to take advantage of every flaw, and can figure out how to turn this on the rider. But if handled properly, they are willing to give their all for their rider, and can make great bonds with humans.

SAM-chan's horse is modeled on the Shetland Pony, a tiny, mischievous breed from Scotland. Shetland Ponies are the classic kid's horse; they are small, fat, and furry, with a wicked streak of gluttony, and are known for being sharp-witted and feisty. In case you were wondering, the pony's bridle, saddle and SAM-chan's britches, hat and tall boots are an allusion to the gear worn in the sport of dressage, a precision equestrian event that has it's roots in western Europe and is very popular in Germany.

I would have given PCLOS-tan a hat, but I'm no good at drawing cowboy hats--and besides which, it would've covered too much hair.

But as I said, it's still in beta, as more detail is needed on the saddlery, as well as putting in PCLOS and SAM-chan's hands, and doing hair highlighting. But it's a start. I should also note that these are the first characters I've drawn entirely on the computer, with no guide sketch (OS/8-tan being the second)

And in case you were wondering but weren't able to see it...yes, that is a C-Chan cameo there...
