QuoteSAM-tan rocks!

Thank you Siya-san.  ^^
But PCLOS-sama rocks too,........ right?  ^^'

QuoteWow... And I just thought that Unix-sama would have annihilated her opponents, blasting them into smoldering cinders to be blown away by the wind! But to deal with her opponents in a way that causes them to bring shame on themself while losing followers to convert to Unix... Genius!

Well now, let's not get ahead of ourselves.  There's PLENTY of low-level opponents she has no qualms about blasting into smoldering cinders.  ^____^'

It's just the strong useful ones that she spends her time strategizing against.

Fight smarter, not harder.  ^.^

QuoteAlso chibi SAM-chan is teh cuteness! *___*

Thank you Aurora-hime.  ^^
Course, I know you liked PCLOS-sama, so you're off the hook there.  ^___^

QuoteHow about this, I'll just collect everything that gets tossed at me by angered Unixes, and you can look it over.

Okay.  ^__^

*starts rummaging through first batch of projectiles*

Ooooh,... a copy of Encarta '97....

....

Oooh, the complete compilation of Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy.....  ^___^

...

*eyes illuminate*

YOWZA!!!  A box of rolled KENNEDY HALF DOLLARS!!!!!!  AND THE LOOK LIKE THEY'VE BEEN SITTING IN A VAULT FOR YEARS!!!!

JACKPOT!!!!!  $v$

I'll take all the silver ones, you can keep a 1/4 of the copper-nickel ones, Bella-san.  ^___^

*goes off to do some coin counting*

QuoteI always figured...from what you said...that a lot of Unix-sama's strategy involves mind games and such, perhaps more than actual fighting.

At heart, UNIX-sama is a pragmatist, and it shows in how efficiently she wages her battles, and chooses her victories AND defeats (losing territory and giving her opponent a false sense of security is another strategy she employs, ableit one that many of her children fail to understand and have botched in the past).

She employs mind games when face to face with a strong opponent, but she can also stoke fear, unrest, mistrust and superstition against whole armies through a variety of clandestine and sabotage methods.

It's far more efficient to make an army turn on itself, then have to face it full-force.

QuoteI can see where Multics-sama...while very skilled at self-defense...would lack strategy and direction. I think she had a way of making those around her either love or hate her...and when she got an enemy, she got one for life.

And when you think about it, she never did defeat any of her rivals (cause Unix-sama and GECOS-san are still around)....she merely managed to survive the fights to live another day O__o

Exactly.  ^^

The more she won and taunted her victories, the more angry, vengeful and obsessive her opponents become.  It's a fairly simple thing to understand, but some people have trouble realizing that other people have pride and feelings too.

QuoteWow....Unix-sama is scary...

In the best kind of way, of course :P

Unfortunately, unlike the other book, I can't recommend you read Romance of the Twelve Kingdoms.

On the one hand, I'm not entirely confident the translations are correct.  ^^'

On the other hand, all it is a story about great kingdoms, and the Eunuchs that destroy them all.  :P

QuoteYep...the dual would have ended quite anticlimactically...and would have actually started that friendship between the two, I suppose.

I still don't know how VMS-sama and Multics-sama would have known each other, though; but I guess in the OS-tan world strange connections are quite common. There's like, Two Degrees of Separation between everybody :P

True that.  ^.^
I mean, you have Windows ME and Mac OS9-kun DATING, for crying out loud.... ^___^'

QuoteAnd, I was wondering, what exactly would hardware be to these older OS-tans? Because, in this comic, I want to mention the irony of how, while the DEC-tans never got along with the Unix-tans, the Unix family in fact got their start on DEC hardware. But...what would the hardware (the PDPs, VAXs, etc) be? Should I just mention it as "DEC territory" or something?

It's not really central to the plot, though...

Hmmm,... while I'm actually not concrete about the topic either, as I fluctuate between characterizing hardware as land, real-life machines and actual hardware-tans.  ^^;

That being said,.... artistic license, dearie....

Artistic license.... ^.^

QuoteMeep @__@

OMG, she is just too cute! I love her hair, and her pet mouse is adorable too

I'd swoon, but I'll save my swooning for the finished version!

Thank you Bella-san.  ^^

But actually......

Uh......

I was really thinking about just leaving it as is and calling it a day.  Now that I know what SAM-chan looks like, I can probably put more effort into creating a larger, full-sized "promotional" drawing.  ^___^

.
.
.
.

But I suppose I COULD squeeze in a little rudimentary shading at least.... ^.^

QuoteNext page...

And yeah, I am referencing a real life problem they had at the DEC headquarters...leaks! XD

Aww yeah, the Bella-san is on a roll!  ^v^

I can definitely see from a mile away that you're a lot more comfortable in this medium, as can be seen by how well-drawn your characters are in PANEL 1, 2, 5, and 8.  Like before, your characters are drawn perfectly portioned, with very charismatic and fair  facial expressions (Ultrix-san is so cute... ^.^), and well-defined realistic poses.

You've obviously done your research if you were able to add that small reference about the DEC headquarters so effectively -- no doubt an old DEC fan would have a field-day with this comic.  ^^

And yes, the sailboats are what I call a "LOL magnet"!  ^>^

Actually, since you've been able to create so much content non-stop for the past week, I have to ask you now how you feel about drawing these, and whether you want to rethink your notion that you don't have the drive to finish a comic.  Seems to me like you have drive to spare after all.  ^__^

QuoteOh my goodness, there is so much here! So much to catch up on! Serves me right for being gone so long, ne? Gomen nasai
*Bows apologetically*

*sigh*  Yo Tsubashi....  Yeah, I don't even know if you're still in NYC or not.  T___T'

Nice to have you back again,... and having drawn your own mini too boot!

I for one am supposed to be retired already,........ but was surprised to see a lot of pressure to the contrary, so for now I'm still here.... ¬v¬'

QuoteBased off the comments of "Manga quality" and "Panels" I'm guessing we're talking about the contents of your newly created "comics" section of your User gallery. If such is the case, I can only echo what has already been said. I've always loved your drawing style, and seeing such copious amounts of concentrated win makes me giddy.

Yep, I'm happy to say that it is her latest comic panels that are posted here.  ^^

She's actually drawn some very GOOD sketches in the background for some as-yet undisclosed characters....

But thanks to Baka C-chan they're not available for public viewing yet.  I hope to change that soon, though.  -v-

QuoteForgive me, I am short on time, but before I go I must express my amazement at Senpai's skills! Building a Linux Distro WHILE producing amazingly cute drawings? Do you never sleep, senpai? ^v^

Actually no, I think I'm becoming a vampire pig too, and soon we'll be competing for blood.  ^^'

But I think I've done more Linux work than drawing recently (drawing, including wallpapers, icons, and my very own cursor theme called "Vanguard" -- NOW available for download from the PCLOS repositories.... ^__^).

And even at that, I might slack off a little on my dev work, since I'm in the process of crash-coursing in C/C++.  Truth be told, I've decided I definitely want to immerse myself in SOFTWARE development full-time.  Maybe even help out with KDE4 later on....

QuotePCLOS-tan is indescribable, and SAM-chan... kawaii!!!
I love the reference to Thunar, but even better is that its thematic placement. It makes SAM-chan look so small! ^.^
Very well done!

Thank you Tsutsu-dono.  -v-

Actually, Bella-sama sketched SAM-chan a looooooooooooong time ago, and Baka C-chan hasn't made due on his promise to ink/color it until now.  And even then, I coped out with this tiny chibi form instead.  Her sketch was full-sized.

Her age is in itself still set up for debate, as I had in mind making her 12, 13 tops, while Bella-san may have thought her to be a little older.  PCLOS-sama, though, is well in her twenties.  ^^

Added after 2 minutes:

Oh, and one last note about SAM-chan's hair.  I just recently finished watching Shogun, and fell madly in love with that "double-handle"-style hair that some of the ladies used in the series.  Since I saw no other OS-tan with "handle" hair", I figured,... what the hell,....

It helps accentuate her "mousiness" (literally).  ^.^

Siya

QuoteBut PCLOS-sama rocks too,........ right? ^^'
Yes, of course she does! ^^  I just felt that, since I was failing to mention anything related to any of the other previous posts, I should just comment on the newest rendition!

But, now that I'm backpedaling, I would like to say that Bella's comics are pretty awesome, also!  I, too, am a fan of the hallway river scene.

Bella

QuoteNice reference! The third-to-last panel is my favorite, with a young VMS-sama and RT11-tan playing with toy sailboats in the flooded hallway!

I thought that would be a fun little scene...

QuoteBut did VMS-sama set up the leak in the room she showed to Ultrix-tan on purpose?

Hmmm...I don't know...but that's an interesting theory, maybe she did :P

QuoteOh my goodness, there is so much here! So much to catch up on! Serves me right for being gone so long, ne? Gomen nasai
*Bows apologetically*

I have a sneaking suspicion that due to the almost pictureless posts I may infer that my new filter server disallows packets from photobucket. I'll need to fix that, but until I do I'll have to guess which pictures we're talking about. If I start commenting on the wrong pics, please forgive me ^^'

Hey, Tsubashi! I'm glad to see you stopping by. And with a new avatar! I'm assuming you made it?

Yeah, all these pix are linked from Photobucket : \

QuoteBased off the comments of "Manga quality" and "Panels" I'm guessing we're talking about the contents of your newly created "comics" section of your User gallery. If such is the case, I can only echo what has already been said. I've always loved your drawing style, and seeing such copious amounts of concentrated win makes me giddy. I absolutely love the dynamic layout, and the ease of direction. Your sense of timing is especially poignant as demonstrated by the exceeding attention to detail in the frames in which you wish the viewer to linger in, and the almost rushed feel of the transitory frames. I love the tension you set up almost immediately, but if I had to name the weakest part of the whole thing, I think it would be the almost anti-climactic resolution to the tense game. Then again, I haven't any better ideas on, so perhaps your way was best. Besides, as far as I can tell, that sequence was designed to develop almost exclusively VMS-sama 's character, so a longer resolution would have just wasted time.

All in all, I'd rate it at a 12 out of 10, with very high potential! ^V^

Thank you very much! I will admit I'm mostly drawing this as practice...but I think I could expand this story...

QuoteI also saw your chibis, to which I must ask: is there anything you are not exceedingly good at? ^.^
Regardless of what anyone else say, you're definitely one of the best artists, if we're going by my books. ^-^

Thanks! ^_^

What can I say, I just keep trying new drawing styles, learning as I go along, and I always try to have fun.

QuoteAlas, my time is up, and I must go. Fortunately, it looks like I ought to be around a lot more now, so hopefully I won't end up as woefully behind as I am now ^^'

I hope we can see you around more :D

Ooooh...that's right, she uses fire as an attack...

Should make a VMS-sama/Unix-sama face-off all the more interesting, as VMS-sama's specialty is controlling water @__@

Fight smarter, not harder. ^.^

That's true...Unix wasn't necessarily technically better, but it is agreed it was better from an conceptual standpoint...

QuoteExactly. ^^

The more she won and taunted her victories, the more angry, vengeful and obsessive her opponents become. It's a fairly simple thing to understand, but some people have trouble realizing that other people have pride and feelings too.

I don't think Multics-sama would have had any lack of empathy....I just think she was the world's worst strategist, and those around her weren't helping (as in, management).

It also makes me think what Multics-sama would have said about her daughter...there's no shortage of Multicians who think Unix is the scourge of the earth. But then again there's the level headed few who really appreciate Unix...

QuoteUnfortunately, unlike the other book, I can't recommend you read Romance of the Twelve Kingdoms.

On the one hand, I'm not entirely confident the translations are correct. ^^'

On the other hand, all it is a story about great kingdoms, and the Eunuchs that destroy them all. :P

Eunuchs...destroying...an empire...?

Does this have to do with Multics? :P

*bad Unix joke here, people*

QuoteHmmm,... while I'm actually not concrete about the topic either, as I fluctuate between characterizing hardware as land, real-life machines and actual hardware-tans. ^^;

That being said,.... artistic license, dearie....

Artistic license.... ^.^

I think I'll probably just mention it as "territory".

Cause, "land" I almost want to say would be a real-life place (like a country, state, city, etc).

"Territory" could be an area (any place with a particular piece of hardware) under the jurisdiction of a certain group. To use an example, all the VAXes scattered around the world would have been territory belonging to the DEC-tans; although, later on, about 25% of that territory would have fallen under the control of the Unixes.

QuoteThank you Bella-san. ^^

Thanks! I've been trying to think of what I'll do for the next page...I want to set up the conflict between Ultrix-chan and VMS-sama that will emerge later on, but I don't want either party to seem too...hostile.

QuoteYou've obviously done your research if you were able to add that small reference about the DEC headquarters so effectively -- no doubt an old DEC fan would have a field-day with this comic. ^^

I never said I didn't have the drive; I said I'd never have the time or energy to do a digitally colored comic.

QuoteI for one am supposed to be retired already,........ but was surprised to see a lot of pressure to the contrary, so for now I'm still here.... ¬v¬'

Every time you think you're out, they pull you back in.

(c'mon, who doesn't get this reference?)

They aren't that good ;)

Bella

Hey all y'all! Been a bit busy lately. I just finished watching Gunslinger Girl. I had been meaning to watch that for a while...oh man, that's a sad (but really great) series; although the ending was a bit odd IMHO...O___O

In more relevant news, I drew a bit of a blank on what I should do with my comic; So I put in on the shelf for a while. I think I realized that trying to come up with the dialogue and writing it at the same time I was drawing was slowing me down, so I decided to do it digitally. And I came up with this:

Panel 1: Yeah, I suck at drawing mechanical stuff; the real clock motor or whatever in the Maynard clock tower doesn't look anything like this really, so I took a bit of artistic license.

panel 4: RSX-san is assuming that VMS-san and Ultrix-chan won't get along very well.

panels 7 and 8: OMG it is teh Goddess (circa the early 70s)! And BSD-san!

panels 10 and 11: Yeah, we all knew the peace was gonna be shattered somehow...who'd have thunk Ultrix-san would start it though?

C-Chan

YAY!!!  Bella-sama watched Gunslinger Girl!  Now she'll REALLY be able to draw UNIX-sama, now that she has reviewed all four original character bases for her.  ^^

Just to recap them:

    - Lady Eboshi (Mononoke Hime)
    - Madame Suliman (Howl's Moving Castle)
    - Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Thomas Harris novels/movies)
    - Fleda Claes Johansson (Gunslinger Girl)

In any event, gotta disappear for a moment.  I am out of rainchecks at the moment, so maybe I can cop out of my unwarranted delay of comments somehow.... ^^'

QuoteYAY!!! Bella-sama watched Gunslinger Girl! Now she'll REALLY be able to draw UNIX-sama, now that she has reviewed all four original character bases for her. ^^

Incedentally, I guess Triela and Claes are tied for my favorite characters in that series...although Angelica was kinda interesting, too...

QuoteJust to recap them:

     - Lady Eboshi (Mononoke Hime)
     - Madame Suliman (Howl's Moving Castle)
     - Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Thomas Harris novels/movies)
     - Fleda Claes Johansson (Gunslinger Girl)

Woohoo! Time to play...how is the Goddess like that unrelated character!

- Lady Eboshi (Mononoke Hime)....now that you mention it, the two do share some traits. I've never thought of this before now, though...
- Madame Suliman (Howl's Moving Castle)...haven't seen this movie, so I can't comment.
- Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Thomas Harris novels/movies)...well, of course, both are notorious mind-gamers. Aside from this, however...I'm heading for the hills if Unix-sama even invites me over for liver and chianti @___@
- Fleda Claes Johansson (Gunslinger Girl)...they're physically sorta alike...and I suppose both are all but retired and living on borrowed time...-__-

QuoteIn any event, gotta disappear for a moment. I am out of rainchecks at the moment, so maybe I can cop out of my unwarranted delay of comments somehow.... ^^'

Uh...oh...you better shield your eyes :P

Notes: Hey, a flashback to 1978. I should note that VMS-sama is in her mid teens here; because 1978 was the year VMS was released, I figured she should be on the younger side. But, of course, she doesn't want to be sent out to Berkeley to try to get their territory back, not with the track record of DEC-tans who have been sent out to the Western Frontier only to come back with a severly wounded pride!

And a note on panel 6: that is Spike, RSTS-san's pet bulldog, next to her :P

Also, I'm thinking about making a separate thread for my comics, just so I can use this thread to post my vector drawings and stuff. Which I am still working on, BTW; I haven't forgotten about my Solaris-tan/DSS-chan pic...

C-Chan

Okay, at long last I can answer this thread.  Will I survive the swoonage?  Or will I end up blowing up into countless, unrecoverable, subatomic particles, and scatter in the wind?  ^____^

We shall see.... ^.^

*starts typing*

Added after 1 hours 16 minutes:

QuoteOoooh...that's right, she uses fire as an attack...

*yawns*  ^0^

True that, water can put out a couple of flames.  ^___^
But crank up the heat to magmatic proportions, and it'll turn that water into steam.  ^^;

QuoteOh man...Unix-sama is scary.

In fairness, that's also the reason why she doesn't dislike the Windows family either.  Since they began their Empire-building campaign, they specialized in Divide & COnquer, False Flag, Espionage, Bribery, and Propaganda campaigns to compensate for their shortfalls and late start in the market.  And it worked,... perhaps not indefinitely, but enough to secure at least 2 decades worth of the largest OS empire ever seen.  ^__~

As an old-school strategist, she's obliged to respect her enemy's cunning, even if very few of them reciprocate.  (in fact, most of the younger Windows-tans now don't even realize she exists)  ^^'

QuoteI don't think Multics-sama would have had any lack of empathy....I just think she was the world's worst strategist, and those around her weren't helping (as in, management).

"Ah, we're seiging a fort?  We don't need no stinkin' trebuchets.  Just keep throwing foot soldiers at it until it falls."

You mean THAT kind of bad strategist?  ^^;

QuoteIt also makes me think what Multics-sama would have said about her daughter...there's no shortage of Multicians who think Unix is the scourge of the earth. But then again there's the level headed few who really appreciate Unix...
[/quote]

It's very likely that "whelp" would've been the kindest label given to UNIX-sama in her fragile youth.  Unfortunately for them she always kept a list,... ^___~

QuoteEunuchs...destroying...an empire...?

Does this have to do with Multics? :P

*bad Unix joke here, people*

And I'm feeling Deja Vu here....  ^.^

....

.......ah yes,... Nejin-san...  -v-

Quote"Territory" could be an area (any place with a particular piece of hardware) under the jurisdiction of a certain group. To use an example, all the VAXes scattered around the world would have been territory belonging to the DEC-tans; although, later on, about 25% of that territory would have fallen under the control of the Unixes.

Good call.  I imagine that that DEC territories would've been akin to forts and strongholds.  ^^

I imagine Commodore territory in its era would've been like ports and piers, and Apple territory like frontier towns and farms, TRS territory would've been missions, and Atari territory would've been carnivals and circuses.

QuoteEither way.

I still can't get over how cute SAM-chan is, though. I almost want to melt O.O

I'm in the process of drawing full-sized versions of the two,... or actually, I'm drawing PCLOS-sama in her EeePCLOS incarnation.  I think you'll love her in her gorgeous, modern Cheongsam, but sadly I can't post it since it's not PG-rated yet (have to finish drawing the clothing).  ^^'

After that, I want to do a full-sized SAM-chan as well.  ^___^

Both will be wallpapers available in EeePCLOS, so I have to make them extra careful this time.  ^.^

QuoteEvery time you think you're out, they pull you back in.

(c'mon, who doesn't get this reference?)

*looks away, sweatdropping*  ^^;

Is this one of the cable TV things again, or am I just 'tarded?  ^___^;

QuoteThey aren't that good

Good enough to post here.  I'm gonna do it when you least suspect it.  ^.^

QuoteThat was ages ago! I think I like her better at 12 or 13 now.

Well her chibi form accentuates her age maybe a little too much.  As you'll see in her fully, there's a particular grace to her cuteness.  Certainly her hair would be better defined.  ^^

QuoteIn more relevant news, I drew a bit of a blank on what I should do with my comic; So I put in on the shelf for a while. I think I realized that trying to come up with the dialogue and writing it at the same time I was drawing was slowing me down, so I decided to do it digitally. And I came up with this:

First off, before I recover from my explosive "raincheck", I do have to compliment you on your decision to make the dialogue digital.  I think I said before that the lettering was really the only weak aspect of your early pages, since in some instances it's a bit hard to read, and in others it looks like you're squeezing letters.  Now, though, the lettering is crisp and legible -- combined with your excellent hand-drawn character design, detail and expressions, and you basically have a full-fledged manga in spirit and appearance.  ^^

Bottom line, no matter how I tilt my head or squint my eyes, all I see is epicness.  ^______^

QuotePanel 1: Yeah, I suck at drawing mechanical stuff; the real clock motor or whatever in the Maynard clock tower doesn't look anything like this really, so I took a bit of artistic license.

With mechanical items, tracework helps if you're not used to it.  Granted it might be hard to find a picture of that specific mechanism, but for certain things like RISC-tan's pistol, I sketched it from a real picture to ensure accuracy.

Same with System 6-tan's rocket launcher in page 2 of the Mac Manga.  ^^

The Kernel Panic Airship in the ZS Christmas Special was 100% pure artistic license, though, which is why it looks a bit fanciful.  ^^;

Quotepanel 4: RSX-san is assuming that VMS-san and Ultrix-chan won't get along very well.

Assumption.... or foresight.  ^^;
BTW, I love how cute she looks pondering in Panel 3.  ^.^

And Ultrix-san in Panel 6 is supremely gorgeous.  ^___^

Quotepanels 7 and 8: OMG it is teh Goddess (circa the early 70s)! And BSD-san!

Awwww yeah!!!!!!  teh Goddess OOZES with cool even in her youth.  ^________^
I LOVE the way she's drawn here!!!  ^v^
And clearly,... that poor sap ended up on her list not long after that.  ^^'

And yeah,... I can understand Ultrix-san's confusion....  ^^;

"My mother beat the snot out of all your friends and family, and conquered HUGE swaths of your land... and yet I've been invited to stay here.  Are you guys up to something, or just braindead?"

Does that sum up Ultrix-san's psyche?  ^____^;

Quotepanels 10 and 11: Yeah, we all knew the peace was gonna be shattered somehow...who'd have thunk Ultrix-san would start it though?

I rest my case.  ^.^;

QuoteIncedentally, I guess Triela and Claes are tied for my favorite characters in that series...although Angelica was kinda interesting, too...

What a coincidence!  Triela is my second favorite.  ^.^
But yeah, no.... Claes' inquisitive and independent spirit was the deal-braker for me  ^^

QuoteWoohoo! Time to play...how is the Goddess like that unrelated character!

LOLZ!!  ^V^

Quote- Lady Eboshi (Mononoke Hime)....now that you mention it, the two do share some traits. I've never thought of this before now, though...

UNIX-sama is clearly lion-hearted, but especially in her early years would've been keen on representing outcasts and other overlooked individuals.  Part of that has survived in recent times, manifested in her nurturing of the Binteji Renmei.

Also in her youth, she would've built her own empire with only a fledgling army wielding unique weaponry, a lot of damn good strategy, and cold fearlessness against seemingly impossible odd.

Quote- Madame Suliman (Howl's Moving Castle)...haven't seen this movie, so I can't comment.

Do recommend this movie.  Not Miyazaki's best, but very good in its own right, and also very sweet.  ^^

Won't also spoil it either, but a lot of her current physical and mental traits are derived from this kindly yet diabolic character.

Quote- Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Thomas Harris novels/movies)...well, of course, both are notorious mind-gamers. Aside from this, however...I'm heading for the hills if Unix-sama even invites me over for liver and chianti @___@

As well you should.  ^__^
In addition, I like the fact that UNIX-sama also has utter disdain for "uncourteous" individuals.  Even if you're a bitter rival, you can gain mercy if you EARN her mercy -- otherwise it's easier for her to just blast you into pieces rather than waste any of her costly breath.

Plus a lot of her latent and frightening primordial power (that helped overcome MULTICS-sama) is borrowed form Lecter.  Call it a poetic triumph of mind and body over magic.

Quote- Fleda Claes Johansson (Gunslinger Girl)...they're physically sorta alike...and I suppose both are all but retired and living on borrowed time...-__-

Correct.  UNIX-sama is practically Claes-chan's reincarnation -- had I done my comic, I probably would've given UNIX-sama a rather baffling love for fishing, as if inheriting it from a previous life.  ^___~

Even with her age and wisdom, UNIX-sama still loves to study and enrich her mind, and entertain herself with productive pastimes.  She has absolutely no love for idle time, and even less love for blind loyalty.

Unlike Claes, though, she's sadly not retired, and, even sadly, somewhat immortal,....

QuoteUh...oh...you better shield your eyes :P

TOO LATE!!!  WOW!!!!!!  ^V^

QuoteNotes: Hey, a flashback to 1978.

I'm happy to see the long-awaited flashback.  I can assure you, I'm giddy to see her encounter with young UNIX-sama.  ^___^

Given its 1978, it's not surrprising that she's already made a name for herself by now, and is making her moves across the world.  ^.^

And after drawing present-day VMS-sama so cold and austere, it seems so strange yet so cool to see her when SHE was the young, inexperienced pup....  ^v^

Kudos to you in panel 4 for the cute captive expressions, and panel 5 for the way you captured young VMS-chan's anxiety.  ^^

QuoteAnd a note on panel 6: that is Spike, RSTS-san's pet bulldog, next to her :P

Admittedly, the top-down look did blur that fact a little.  But now that you mention it, it's neat to have Spike cameo like that.  ^>^

Special kudos go out to panels 7,8 and 9 for drawing RSTS-sama with that careful blend of coolness and elegance, especially in panel 8 where you really nailed it!  ^-^

Also gotta love VMS-sama whining,... that ain't something you see much nowadays.  ^^;

I take it also,... she uses a rather standard-issue DEC sword at this point, no?  ^____^;

QuoteAlso, I'm thinking about making a separate thread for my comics, just so I can use this thread to post my vector drawings and stuff. Which I am still working on, BTW; I haven't forgotten about my Solaris-tan/DSS-chan pic...

I suppose it couldn't hurt.  Sadly, haven't heard back yet about a few things that might help with... say, for example, manga projects.  -.-'

Quote*yawns* ^0^

True that, water can put out a couple of flames. ^___^
But crank up the heat to magmatic proportions, and it'll turn that water into steam. ^^;

I thought of that, too...but, of course, as long as the constituent materials are there, VMS-san could always turn that steam back into water...

QuoteIn fairness, that's also the reason why she doesn't dislike the Windows family either. ^__~

The Goddess doesn't hate the Windows family! Noooo! I'm starting to lose faith!

*looks into becoming a Multics-sama-ist*

QuoteAs an old-school strategist, she's obliged to respect her enemy's cunning, even if very few of them reciprocate. (in fact, most of the younger Windows-tans now don't even realize she exists) ^^'

Me-tan: Unix who? Huh?

:P

Quote"Ah, we're seiging a fort? We don't need no stinkin' trebuchets. Just keep throwing foot soldiers at it until it falls."

You mean THAT kind of bad strategist? ^^;

Yeah, pretty much. But it also has to do with her company...they were so adamant about her only conquering large, lucrative territories (that would be the Honeywell mainframes) that they never advised her to perhaps look into a conquest of smaller territories with less infrastructure (that would be minicomputers and stuff).

Of course, in the 1980s, she made a series of rather half-baked attempt to get in on the microcomputer market (that could be a last-ditch effort to take over some small towns and stuff), but this went nowhere...

QuoteIt's very likely that "whelp" would've been the kindest label given to UNIX-sama in her fragile youth. Unfortunately for them she always kept a list,... ^___~

Hah...

QuoteGood call. I imagine that that DEC territories would've been akin to forts and strongholds. ^^

I imagine Commodore territory in its era would've been like ports and piers, and Apple territory like frontier towns and farms, TRS territory would've been missions, and Atari territory would've been carnivals and circuses.

...and Unix and Windows territories would be cities, and Linux territory...I dunno...rather small towns?

QuoteI'm in the process of drawing full-sized versions of the two,... or actually, I'm drawing PCLOS-sama in her EeePCLOS incarnation. I think you'll love her in her gorgeous, modern Cheongsam, but sadly I can't post it since it's not PG-rated yet (have to finish drawing the clothing). ^^'

I can't wait to see her! :D

QuoteAfter that, I want to do a full-sized SAM-chan as well. ^___^

Both will be wallpapers available in EeePCLOS, so I have to make them extra careful this time. ^.^

Ooooh, awesome!

Quote*looks away, sweatdropping* ^^;

Is this one of the cable TV things again, or am I just 'tarded? ^___^;

I think it was from The Godfather...

QuoteFirst off, before I recover from my explosive "raincheck", I do have to compliment you on your decision to make the dialogue digital.

I really stink at printing, so I figured I could do a lot more with digitalizing the dialogue. This way, I can work on the dialogue as I think it up, and rewrite it as much as I want...

QuoteWith mechanical items, tracework helps if you're not used to it. Granted it might be hard to find a picture of that specific mechanism, but for certain things like RISC-tan's pistol, I sketched it from a real picture to ensure accuracy.

Same with System 6-tan's rocket launcher in page 2 of the Mac Manga. ^^

The Kernel Panic Airship in the ZS Christmas Special was 100% pure artistic license, though, which is why it looks a bit fanciful. ^^;

They had some pix of the mechanism on the Maynard website, so I used it for inspiration...but it certainly wasn't close by a long shot. Oh well...

QuoteAssumption.... or foresight. ^^;
BTW, I love how cute she looks pondering in Panel 3. ^.^

And Ultrix-san in Panel 6 is supremely gorgeous. ^___^

Thank you :)

QuoteAwwww yeah!!!!!! teh Goddess OOZES with cool even in her youth. ^________^
I LOVE the way she's drawn here!!! ^v^
And clearly,... that poor sap ended up on her list not long after that. ^^'

And yeah,... I can understand Ultrix-san's confusion.... ^^;

"My mother beat the snot out of all your friends and family, and conquered HUGE swaths of your land... and yet I've been invited to stay here. Are you guys up to something, or just braindead?"

Does that sum up Ultrix-san's psyche? ^____^;

Well, it has to come down to the higher-ups thinking, should we allow ourselves to be conquered from outside parties? Or should we adopt our very enemy, and save face? Because then the land is still in the hands of a DEC-tan, even if it's not a true DEC-tan. Since they were going to lose territory to the Unixes anyhow, they might as well lose territory to their own Unix.

QuoteWhat a coincidence! Triela is my second favorite. ^.^
But yeah, no.... Claes' inquisitive and independent spirit was the deal-braker for me ^^

No wai!

Claes was a bit...scary....at times, though...like when she backhanded Angelica while she was in the hospital. You never backhand someone who just got shot, that's just a matter of good manners. :P

QuoteUNIX-sama is clearly lion-hearted, but especially in her early years would've been keen on representing outcasts and other overlooked individuals. Part of that has survived in recent times, manifested in her nurturing of the Binteji Renmei.

Also in her youth, she would've built her own empire with only a fledgling army wielding unique weaponry, a lot of damn good strategy, and cold fearlessness against seemingly impossible odd.

That's exactly what came to mind...

QuoteDo recommend this movie. Not Miyazaki's best, but very good in its own right, and also very sweet. ^^

Won't also spoil it either, but a lot of her current physical and mental traits are derived from this kindly yet diabolic character.

I really haven't seen a Miyazaki movie I didn't like...:)

QuoteIn addition, I like the fact that UNIX-sama also has utter disdain for "uncourteous" individuals. Even if you're a bitter rival, you can gain mercy if you EARN her mercy -- otherwise it's easier for her to just blast you into pieces rather than waste any of her costly breath.

Oh, I see...

But I'm still not going over if she ever says I'm "the dinner guest of honor", though XD

QuoteCorrect. UNIX-sama is practically Claes-chan's reincarnation -- had I done my comic, I probably would've given UNIX-sama a rather baffling love for fishing, as if inheriting it from a previous life. ^___~

Bwahaha! :D

Hmmm...why am I getting a strange urge to draw a Unix-tans at the Beach picture...?

QuoteEven with her age and wisdom, UNIX-sama still loves to study and enrich her mind, and entertain herself with productive pastimes. She has absolutely no love for idle time, and even less love for blind loyalty.

Unlike Claes, though, she's sadly not retired, and, even sadly, somewhat immortal,....

Hey, something we have in common, I have to be doing something constantly as well. Lawl.

But, does book-throwing count as a productive pastime...? :P

And maybe I worded that wrong...I mean, by all accounts, Unix-sama should probably not be around any more (she's pushing 40 years old), but has managed to keep living....and will probably be around for a very long time, too....

QuoteI'm happy to see the long-awaited flashback. I can assure you, I'm giddy to see her encounter with young UNIX-sama. ^___^

Given its 1978, it's not surrprising that she's already made a name for herself by now, and is making her moves across the world. ^.^

Kudos to you in panel 4 for the cute captive expressions, and panel 5 for the way you captured young VMS-chan's anxiety.

This flashback will probably go on for some time; I want to explain how she went out to Berkeley only to find that there was really nobody who wanted her there (because, at this time, just about every department that used computers had grown attached to Unix). Even when RSTS-san was stationed out there, she had a group of followers (the mathematics and science departments, if I recall correctly, fought to keep RSTS)...but no love for VMS-san, sadly....

QuoteAdmittedly, the top-down look did blur that fact a little. But now that you mention it, it's neat to have Spike cameo like that. ^>^

Special kudos go out to panels 7,8 and 9 for drawing RSTS-sama with that careful blend of coolness and elegance, especially in panel 8 where you really nailed it! ^-^

I take it also,... she uses a rather standard-issue DEC sword at this point, no? ^____^;

Yeah, I figured I had to give Spike a cameo...

And while I have never done a finished drawing of RSTS-san, I am starting to get a feel for the character...

I also wanted to show VMS-sama in another light...we usually see her as being very strong and silent, so I thought it would be fun to see her as an angsty youth :P

And yes, the standard-issue DEC swords are going to come up in the next page. I won't say how, though ;)

QuoteI suppose it couldn't hurt. Sadly, haven't heard back yet about a few things that might help with... say, for example, manga projects. -.-'

Notes:

Panel 1-4: A flashback...in a flashback...kinda? Wow, even the writers of Lost aren't that diabolical.

Who knew, Unix-sama could melt stuff on contact (kinda like Inferno-chan, except Unix-sama actually has control over it while it's sorta involuntary for her granddaughter). I hope I didn't make her too scary, though. Lawl.

Aurora Borealis

Wow! Use fire power, melt things, use mind tricks, take losses to lull foes into a false sense of security, make her foes bring shame on themselves, nearly kill Multics-sama who was supposedly a lot better than her... Is there anything Unix can't do? :D

C-Chan

Well,... she can't decorate a Christmas Tree to save her life,... in fact, she wouldn't put one up to begin with.  ^_______^;

You're forgetting her abilities to shape-shift, speak foreign tongues, experience the human emotion known as "kindness"...and fishing!

But, I suppose she'd have three main branches of power...there's fire/heat (really the same thing) for offensive purposes; some kinda forcefield power for defending herself, which could probably be pseudo-scientifically linked back to that heat manipulation, since pseudo-scientists have yet to detail what exactly goes into making a forcefield; plus she's one heck of a mind gamer.

As for Multics-sama...it depends on what better is. Multics had a lot more features than Unix, and was technically superior, while Unix was built on better concepts and was evolutionarily superior.

The UNIX territories would be more productive I assume -- so yeah it'd include some cities, but also industrial centers, farm lands, lumber/mining/drilling facilities, manufacturing plants,... you know, stuff that drives an economy but is a major eyesore.

The WIndows-tans focus civilian and commercial interests: glamorous cities with expensive downtown areas, gleaming white suburbs, malls that stretch beyond the eye can see, stadiums and sports arenas, news outlets and big budget movie studios.  Living beyond one's means is a lifestyle rather than just a meager state of mind for the majority of the residents.

About the forcefield,... this is a bit of "borrowing" from one of her inspirational characters, but it needn't be restricted to defending herself.  I imagine she can also project forcefields on other people -- in part to trap them, but also to use her other magical crafts she's picked up over the years to project another "world" inside them (kind of like psychically-produced holography).  She could subject an offender into a nightmarish world to inflict even more psychological harm -- or she could use it for the peacefully-purpose of hands-on training (almost Matrix-style, but not quite since it wouldn't be limited to just the mind).  :)

The font is fine,... in fact, I think it adds a bit of character.  Hard to really tell it's a Terminal font, though,... might've helped to put it inside a black box (with white lettering), but not really necessary and it would've gotten in the way of the juicy drawings.  ^__^

No, that's about right.  Remember my old Win 2.0-chan script had the Mac kids and Win kids fighting in a corny West Side Story style, complete with well-choreographed dance sequences and the long lost art of coordinated finger snapping.  ^.^

Besides, it adds to the Full Metal Panic inspiration... especially since the world of the consumer-grade OS-tans (about a decade after the stories timeline) would be so much like the world "on the other side of the gate" (not spoiling it for anyone, I hope)  ^___^

Well, I've been working on this bit by bit for the past couple of weeks...

I call it, Solaris-san's Adventures Through the Magnifying Glass!

Or, if you perfer...

-It's a Damn Small World
(play on "it's a small world")

-Star-what the fsck-'s?!
(play on Starbucks)

-I Had a Dream there were Damn Smalls in my Coffee
(reference to that verse from Your So Vain)

And then I tried to come up with a title referencing Black Coffee in Bed, but ran out of ideas. Drats. :P

Aaand, something I made in about a half hour for fun...

QuoteAaaaa now.... since when does NOT disliking someone mean you won't ever try to beat them into a bloody pulp? ^__________^;

Touche :P

QuoteThe UNIX territories would be more productive I assume -- so yeah it'd include some cities, but also industrial centers, farm lands, lumber/mining/drilling facilities, manufacturing plants,... you know, stuff that drives an economy but is a major eyesore.

That sounds about right, as Unix is often used behind the scenes, at it were; in severs, routers, etc...

On the same note, I suppose Multics-sama's sparse territories would have been palatial estates, huge gardens, big old towns, etc...

Not exactly productive or plentiful, but the land she did control was very valuable (because Multics only had a measly 75 to 100 sites running at its peak, while by 1973 Unix had over 1500; except the Unix sites were probably in the tens of thousands of dollars (I know the PDP hardware line was priced in the $10,000 price range), while the Multics sites were each worth well over $1,000,000!

QuoteThe WIndows-tans focus civilian and commercial interests: glamorous cities with expensive downtown areas, gleaming white suburbs, malls that stretch beyond the eye can see, stadiums and sports arenas, news outlets and big budget movie studios. Living beyond one's means is a lifestyle rather than just a meager state of mind for the majority of the residents.

QuoteLinux territories are generally-speaking compromises of the two (and a lot more varied), but yeah a LOT smaller.

It's as if you've read my mind! Since VMS-sama's alchemy/geomancy would rely on water, she'd have to be near water to have a fighting chance.

Plus I was trying to think up a good locale...that would work quite well, I think.

QuoteYeah,... good exercise and great for building muscles. FYI, UNIX-sama has pumped up some pretty mean biceps thanks to you. ^V^'

Hawhaw...

QuoteHere's hoping Claes-sama has a long life too.... ;__;

Yeah... : \

QuoteMight've said this before, why do I get the impression that VMS-NT mirrors Multics-Unix to such an uncomfortable degree. @___@

Yeah, the two cases are incredibly alike...an "inferior" OS based off of an superior OS cutting into the latter's market due to more commercial appeal. Although, if you think about it, Multics/Unix is a bit more heartbreaking; NT was modeled from VMS because VMS was considered a good system. Unix, however, was based off of Multics because it was a failure. If all had gone well in creating Multics, and Bell Labs never bailed out, Unix wouldn't have been made.

And I do believe that Unix and Multics-sama would have known this fact. O__O

QuoteI still can't get over how THAT... turns into that stoic thing pointing a "BFS" at me in front of a shark tank. ^^;

Amazing how having a secret biological daughter of oneself made by M$ can really change one's personality for the worse ;)

I don't think we really got the stoic, vigilante VMS-sama we know now until the early 90s; and I don't think she went completely fringe until after DEC broke up.

QuoteNo, you got her just right! Compensating for her size, age, youthful demeanor, and biting wit, her young depiction absolutely OOZES with perfection!!!! Yeah, I figured the owl ears being down turned fits her a bit better than them being upright. Upright ears would have made her look too...chipper.

Wow!! 3 beautiful pictures of pure winnage in one day!

*Explodes*

*magically reassembles*

...

Excellent usage of puns with the Solaris-tan picture! :D

The Odyssey-tan minis are so funny! The second one is my favorite! Struggling... to resist the urge... to remark... Not resisting well--

"I don't know what you are talking about so here's an Odyssey-tan with a cake on its head!" :D
