Maybe it's the angle or the adorable expression or the pleasant gesture, but I can't get my eyes off this picture! @v@
It has that same pleasant atmosphere as the one with the Vintage-tans snowball fighting.

It's the angle, Bella drew XP-tan's expression perfectly.

QuoteIt's the angle, Bella drew XP-tan's expression perfectly.

I can see now why camera people are so obsessed with angles.  I'm just used to pointing and shooting a la "spray and pray".  ^^

*stares in admiration of cute Leopard-chan*

Sneak peek on the background I've done for the Minix/Linux-san pic:

I'm just wondering what I should do for trees on the hills in the background. Something...just doesn't jive for me. And you won't see the finished version till I get everything just so...

QuoteIt's the angle, Bella drew XP-tan's expression perfectly

Thank you! I tried to make XP-tan look a bit innocent herself. She's so often depicted as some kind (insert rude expletive), but I've never really thought of XP-tan like that at all...

So....are you and Leopard-chan having some kinda staring contest?

Oooh!  Bella-sama, you weren't kidding when you said that picture was inspiration for you.  ^.^
Lesse....

You nailed the cloud design very well, although I'd probably use different shapes and a lighter shade for the low-lying cloud to the right.  Like with the barn, I'd advise losing the Strokes for the telephone poles, wires and road posts.  You're clearly aiming for a photorealistic look, and the strokes, while okay with Anime characters, will just make background elements look cartoony.  I also see why the shadows on the right-side posts curve upward on that slope, but you might consider just sliiiiighty lowering the angle of the shadows just to keep them a little closer to their counterparts on the left.

QuoteI'm just wondering what I should do for trees on the hills in the background. Something...just doesn't jive for me. And you won't see the finished version till I get everything just so...

Too much blurring i think, plus the little white pines do stand out.  I'd probably advise trying several overlays of pattern fills with disparate tree shapes (complete with shading), then overlapping them in several shapes and sizes to form a thick foresty look.  That's for trees in the background.

If you plan on making foreground trees, where clearly-defined leaves are necessary, then consider the approach I used for that potted plant in the FOSA kitchen.  Pattern Along Path, while expensive CPU-wise, might be JUST what the doctor ordered!  ^.^

(oh and don't forget, there is that Inkscape 0.46 preview release accessible to you....^___^)

And how!  ^v^

Techno the fox

Hello, hello everyone.

Wooooooooooooaaaaaaaaahhhh........@____@

Leopard-chan!!! ^____^
..And Saseko. Might I add that this pic is just heartwarming. After years and years of trying to destroy each other, the Macs and Windows are starting to get along.

Quote from: "C-chan"Bella-sama, what have you done? Leopard-chan is just so darn addicting!!!!

Ahh, Heheheh.. So you're finally starting to see the light. This is just one of the many reasons I like Leopard-chan. (best not piss her off though, she could travel back in time and prevent any certain someone from being born. In a "Back to the future" sort of way.) Though I highly doubt she'd do something like that though, evil just isn't her...

Quote from: "Bella"Since it kinda got buried under a pile of swoonage, I'm going to again mention I'm working on a semi-sappy Linux-sama and Minix-sensei pic. I'm also going to try to do a background, based off of this:

Hmm, sounds promising. Something I'll definetly look forward to.

Oooh, Cool looking ....uhh... Thingy you got there. Talk about alternate means of transportation. I agree with C-chan...I want one of those.

Aw, you know I stink at backgrounds. But I did do away with the strokes on the telephone poles...

Well, I got rid of the trees.

I think doing away with them drives home the vastness of the look I'm going for. Remember, this background's supposed to be a reference to the vastness, yet emptiness, of the internet circa the early 90s. That, and I don't think my poor computer could handle much more blurring.

I'm still trying to fine tune the characters themselves, though...

Uh oh, I hear you've been a bit under the weather lately...

*puts on haz-mat suit*

That's better :P

Joking aside, thanks! And yes, I think our newer Windows-tans are a bit more friendly with the Macs. And if you've seen one of the newer Mac ads, it practically advertised for out beloved XP ^_^

QuoteHmm, sounds promising. Something I'll definetly look forward to.

Oooh, Cool looking ....uhh... Thingy you got there. Talk about alternate means of transportation. I agree with C-chan...I want one of those.

The picture should be done very soon...

And it's not a "thingy", it's a kinetic sculpture!

Oh yes, and just something I started today for fun...PlanB and Octopus-tan!

I couldn't give Octopus-tan tentacles, I just couldn't. But somehow she's ended up being the saucy one in the family.

I want to give one of them glasses, but I'm not sure which, or if I even should...

In other news, today is the 1 year anniversary of my discovery of the OS-tans and this place! While I made a DeviantArt page, I didn't join here till March because I wanted to see whether the forum members here would kill me or not for my artwork...but when I realized posting at DA was something of a dead end, I figured I'd join here, cause y'all seemed nice enough...and the rest was history.

At the risk of minor embarrassment, please to enjoy the first OS-tan drawing I ever drew (or admit to), back on 2/20/07:

All hand drawn. Gees, can you believe this battle scene? To spare a bit of my pride, I should point out at this time:

-I had the mellow Mac OS 9-tan and Windows-hating Mac-tan mixed up. -Homeko/Saseko were a bit blurry to me, so that XP-tan is sorta a catchall. -And some of the DA Linux zealots inspired Ubuntu-tan's inclusion.

Shows what a genius I was back then, eh? ^/////^

Plan B + Octopus picture: Beautiful! And I will incorporate several elements from your renditions into mine in my Plan 9+Plan B+Octopus picture in progress! Thank you for drawing them because I didn't have much of an idea for their outfits but I knew I could count on you and your wonderful fashion sense!

Homeko + Ubuntu + Sonata picture: Wow! Your art style has evolved a lot in the year you've been drawing OS-tans! Their battle suits and katanas remind me of "Kill Bill"!

....................

Well okay, in fairness, the treeless look does amplify the look of "vastness" that one would find in places like, say, Kansas or Oklahoma.  And without Inkscape 0.46 (or its prerelease), all that blurring would be taxing (although my suggestion wouldn't have evolved blurring at all).

But I can't help but feel a little bit of flashback from the time I thought I was helping you with your Tempo-chan drawing.  ;__;

*C-chan feels bad for butting in, and starts moping*

QuoteOoooh....is it like, the unstable beta or something...?

You would think, but using it on my Windows Box at work doesn't seem to turn up much in the way of bugs.  Actually, they've managed to cut down on TONS of bugs since they've switched to the LaunchPad bug reporting system.

You can read about it in one of their newsletters at the Planet Inkscape blog:

http://planet.inkscape.org/

Also be sure to check up the tutorial on custom Pac-Man Ghosts.  It's very very cute.  ^.^

QuoteJoking aside, thanks! And yes, I think our newer Windows-tans are a bit more friendly with the Macs. And if you've seen one of the newer Mac ads, it practically advertised for out beloved XP

Well given that support for XP undermines support for their true market rival, Vista, then yeah I would say it makes perfect sense.  Windows lovers are trying to get XP into their EeePCs (legally or not, but mostly not), not Vista.  ^____^'

QuoteOh yes, and just something I started today for fun...PlanB and Octopus-tan!

OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  @O@

THERE IT IS AGAIN!!!!!!!!  ^V^

By GAWD!!!!  Look at the ange on Plan B-tan's face!!!!!  It has that cute, innocent look that so accentuated Leopard-chan!!!!!  ^___^

*staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaare*

AND Octopus-tan is looking stunning as well!!!  Might be the angle as well, but if I'm not mistaken....

...I think it's just plain ol' evolution.  Your enhancing your drawing style and body portions further, and naturally their beauty along with it!  ^v^

I could literally STARE at this all day!   ^___^
Sorry Leopard-chan, but I found someone else....  -v-

*staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaare*

Plan B-tan is beautiful, although she needs some kind of orange and/or fish elements to complete the look.  I believe those are fins you were intending to draw on her back (based on the sketch).  The hair, though short, is drawn dynamically and really compliments that cute face.  ^.^

Octopus-tan is gorgeous as well, but also gives off the proper air of both playfulness and cluelessness (being a clone of a clone apparently does a number on her IQ).  The orange hair is also a great way to allude to the fact that she DOES belong to Plan 9-san's gene pool, if only because her REAL daughter Inferno-chan also ended up with orange hair.  ^.^

And while there are no tentacles for a skirt (realism and all -v-'), I do love that octopus bun on her head, and it's something creative that I don't believe has ever been done.  ^___^

I'd probably still lobby for longer tentacle-like drapes from her skirt,... just as compensation.  `v'

QuoteI couldn't give Octopus-tan tentacles, I just couldn't. But somehow she's ended up being the saucy one in the family.

Cop out, cop out.  ^o^
But no worries, cause this look works VERY wonderful on her.  ^___^
Best of all is that her octopus hair could probably still be sentient, a la OS/2-san. ^^

QuoteI want to give one of them glasses, but I'm not sure which, or if I even should...

Being an immediate clone of Plan 9-san, Plan B-tan can probably be the one with glasses.  Octopus-san, like Inferno-chan, probably don't need them (although with Inferno-chan, you can say she wants to out of admiration).

QuoteIn other news, today is the 1 year anniversary of my discovery of the OS-tans and this place! While I made a DeviantArt page, I didn't join here till March because I wanted to see whether the forum members here would kill me or not for my artwork...but when I realized posting at DA was something of a dead end, I figured I'd join here, cause y'all seemed nice enough...and the rest was history.

Awwwww... yeah, how could I forget when you first came here?  You were like thiiiiiiiiiiiis tiny.... -v-

*puts hand yay high*

And now you're all grown up, drawing masterpieces left and right simply with a flick of a wrist.  ^.^

But seriously, yeah I remember how kind, courteous and fun-loving you were from the start.  ^___^
I'm glad you stuck with us further, and have helped liven this ol' place up as much as you did.

And hey, you got me out of retirement for a while.  ^.^

*shrinks out of thread*

Oh come now, no shrinking in your thread.  The only shrinking I'll allow here is my trying to get smaller and enjoy better lecherous POV shots.  ^0^

*covers mouth, hoping he didn't reveal too much*  @.@

*clears throat*

But anyway.  ^___^'

Admittedly, it is a lot rougher than the Zenwalk-tan, as well as other assorted OS-tans (including Vistan!) you first posted.  But the thign I enjoyed the most about your early artwork is your absolute willingness and eagerness to draw non-traditional OS-tans.  Had I seen your first alpha pic, I'm sure that would have proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, your commitment to thinking differently.  At the very least it would've been a great foreshadowing of all the wonderful things to come from you.  ^__^

I like it for that, and thank you a lot for sharing that with us.  ^v^

Sadly, the only alpha pics I do have I already posted in my Scrapart Gallery, so there's nothing similar for me to share in that respect.  I do have drawings from at least 2 years prior, as well as old game conversions, but naturally those have nothing to do with OS-tans, and would divulge too much about my previous identity, so.............. yeah, I won't post those.

Not publicly anyway (although I did let one slip in one particular thread).  -.-

But getting back to you....

*visits old DeviantArt page*

WOW!  I had forgotten that your last name was "Cielo".  ^___^
I'm gonna have to call you Bella Cielo-sama just for kicks!   ^v^

Oh, and how much of this information still applies to you?  ^.^

So a while back I thought up this idea, set back in, say, 1992...Minix-sensei just sorta letting (young teenage) Linux-sama out into the world, letting her go off on a truly epic quest spanning the globe, trying and find her own way, and avoid the pitfalls that befell so many before her. I tried to make Minix-sensei a bit sad but...happy...looking, and Linux-sama has a look of...I dunno what, but it seems to fit...

Bella

Oh no! What have I done! Now C-Chan will be passed out for a week!

C-Chan

I'm sorry, that get's old, I know.  ^^;

QuoteSo a while back I thought up this idea, set back in, say, 1992...Minix-sensei just sorta letting (young teenage) Linux-sama out into the world, letting her go off on a truly epic quest spanning the globe, trying and find her own way, and avoid the pitfalls that befell so many before her. Of course, this is before she was granted her powers by the GNU people, and I wanted to try drawing her in different clothes than the penguin suit...

Fufu... Well I had already like the background, but the character design here is stellar, Bella-sama!  ^__^

Minix-sensei conveys the right amount of emotion that you're looking for, and and Linux-sama looks like the insecure, puffy teenager she would have been. the waviness of the hair in the wind is done superbly, and really shows an escalation in drawing style!  And I need not say much about the clothes -- you're among the elite when it comes to clothing and drapery.  ^_____^

With eyes perfect, hair perfect, clothing perfect, and body portions spot-on (or at least Clamp-like), it's really hard to pick anything left to critique.  I think only feet are the last thing left that need any kind of revisiting, if only because they may look rather small in comparison to their legs at times.  Past that would be artistic nirvana.  ^^

QuoteThank you! I tried to make their outfits futuristic, but still a bit retro.

I saw your picture, too...it's coming along great!

It's ironic that the more retro it is, the more futuristic it looks.  Pity that people lost some interest in space travel, flying cars, and all that jazz.  ^^;

QuoteYeah, it looks like Iowa or something. Ironically, I'm not a flatlander, but I thought the wide-openness would work well here

I figured as much, Miss Appalachian.  ^.^

QuoteDon't worry :P

*sniffles*  Okay....  ;___;

QuoteOooooh, I'm gonna have to give it a try. But maybe I'll wait until it's released (in March, right?)...

Oh but if you were to try it now.... @v@

GAWDS!  Instant LUV!!!  ^-^

This thing is beautiful, especially the morph tool and the fast rendering engine!  ^.^

QuoteAnd that blog is really neat! I haven't the time right now, but I'll have to investigate those tutorials further...

Gail Carmichael's entries are often quite interesting.  ^__^

QuoteI had no plans for fins...but I did try to give her a droopy facial expression.

Actually yeah, on closer inspection of your drawing and Aurora's, the draping shoulders of her dress resemble fins kinda, so that's pretty much taken care of.  ^^

QuoteAwww, I dunno if she's an airhead, but I did want to make her look a bit playful and energetic to counter PlanB-tan's nonchalantness.

A little airheadness never hurt anyone.  ^^
Then again, no semi-airhead has ever been equipped with more than 8 arms before.  ^.^

QuoteNow, now, I'd have given her real tentacles, but I'm afraid if the Goddess ever catches wind of this...and she will...that she'll put a contract out for me for making her granddaughter some sort of mutant...I'm runnin' outta lives here, people!

And somehow, you're all okay with most her grandaughter's being demonesses?  ^^;
Then there's that one who's a bug...
That other one who's a pufferfish....

Another who's an olive....

Those famous ones who are kittens and a monkey....

And then we have all those mixed-blood types, one of which is a freakin' GIRAFFE!!!  @.@

Yeeeeeeeeeah,... methinks by now, an octopus would barely register in the veritable ZOO that is the UNIX family tree.  ^^;

Multics-sama would be rolling around in that open source software repository where her remains can be downloaded from.  ^^;

QuoteAs for the bun, I was inspired by Aurora's design (where she has some kinda octopus thingy on her head).

That one is pure dynamite!!!  I loves it!!!  ^V^

QuoteHey, did you see those concepts I drew for a few distro-tans...including...Kubuntu-tan?

Ooh no, sorry,... my bad.  ^^
Will return to your DevArt site and pull up more "blasts from the past later".  ^v^

QuoteFufu...

Yes, I wanted Minix-sensei to look both a bit sad and proud. Insecure, puffy Linux-sama?! I guess that's a good description...we should all be glad she decided to stop trying to be a Unix-clone and be herself.

I was actually inspired by your VMS-sama picture when I did the hair, so I really have to thank you for that part ;)

QuoteWith eyes perfect, hair perfect, clothing perfect, and body portions spot-on (or at least Clamp-like), it's really hard to pick anything left to critique. I think only feet are the last thing left that need any kind of revisiting, if only because they may look rather small in comparison to their legs at times. Past that would be artistic nirvana. ^^

I see what you mean about the feet...

QuoteIt's ironic that the more retro it is, the more futuristic it looks. Pity that people lost some interest in space travel, flying cars, and all that jazz. ^^;

It is a bit paradoxical, huh? But I am glad the public has lost interest in flying cars...just what we need, bad drivers flying around XD

QuoteOh but if you were to try it now.... @v@

GAWDS! Instant LUV!!! ^-^

This thing is beautiful, especially the morph tool and the fast rendering

Ya browbeat me into it :P

I dunno if it's .46 or .45.1, though. I downloaded what was called the ".45.1 and .46 pre-release"....So far, it seems faster than .45, and can handle much more blurring. Haven't tried exporting, yet...

The new features I'm a bit fuzzy on...the 3D box tool I see potential in, but some of the others...like the tweak and fill bucket tools...I don't quite get. Although, last summer I probably would have loved the fill bucket tool ;)

QuoteActually yeah, on closer inspection of your drawing and Aurora's, the draping shoulders of her dress resemble fins kinda, so that's pretty much taken care of. ^^

Exactly!

QuoteA little airheadness never hurt anyone. ^^
Then again, no semi-airhead has ever been equipped with more than 8 arms before. ^.^

Airheadedness! I have a zero-tolerance airheadedness policy! XD

QuoteAnd somehow, you're all okay with most her grandaughter's being demonesses? ^^;
Then there's that one who's a bug...
That other one who's a pufferfish....

Another who's an olive....

Those famous ones who are kittens and a monkey....

And then we have all those mixed-blood types, one of which is a freakin' GIRAFFE!!! @.@

Yeeeeeeeeeah,... methinks by now, an octopus would barely register in the veritable ZOO that is the UNIX family tree. ^^;

Multics-sama would be rolling around in that open source software repository where her remains can be downloaded from. ^^

Yes, but giraffes, fish, olives, kitties, monkeys and bugs don't have tentacles! Heehee...

But if you think about Multics-sama, she herself was a snowy owl and/or eagle. So she started the trend :P

QuoteOoh no, sorry,... my bad. ^^
Will return to your DevArt site and pull up more "blasts from the past later". ^v^

Maybe I should post it, to spare myself the...

*bows and grovels*

Hmmmm...where have I seen that siggy before...? Why do I like it so much...? I gotta figure it out...heehee...

Seriously, I've been meaning to make this signature even since we decided Unix-sama-ism was to be a pseudoreligion XD

NejinOniwa

Drat. What have I missed!?
*swoons*
YOU COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS

Bella

^ Thank you Nejin :)

Here, have a Plan B and Octopus-tan...

And just for those eagle-eyed viewers who wonder what's on Plan B-tan's clipboard. She writes down everything Plan 9-tan says without exception:

The, "I won't see anything I haven't seen before" comment is an allusion to Plan B being a clone of Plan 9 and therefore being an exact body-copy. Nothing more than that XD

And in that vein, I've thought of some more ideas for Plan 9-tan's attitude and backstory....maybe I'll elaborate in the Theories thread.

Oh yes, Inkscape .45.1 or whatever it is, is soooooo much faster with exporting :D
