Harharhar..... ^^;
You do realize that Bliss-tan is a *Nix virus, right?  ^.^;

Quote(Yes I have the MP3 if anyone wants it just ask. I also have the complete soundtracks to Gex 2 enter the gecko and Gex 3)

Nope,... I'm a bonified OGG pig now.  OGG files forever!!  ^v^

I've also taken a liking to that Magnatune store advertised above every once in a while.  If I love FOSS software, it's only natural I should support free music.  ^____^

QuoteOh come on now...there are people who've done a lot less than you that I've considered artists. You are an artist!

I suppose it's a matter of semantics.  ^^
By artist I mean "professional artist" or at least someone who does it as their primary passion. That's why I've given myself the replacement title of "Numismatist who happens to be good at Inkscape", if only because my passions really do lie elsewhere.  In terms of the creative realm, I'm a lot more interested in creating stories and such, rather than art for the sake of it -- and perhaps one fo the reasons I feel so unproductive is because I've done so much of the latter but not the former.

Besides, I reckon too that if I were a real artist, I would be a lot more protective of my source material and would most certainly not divulge my secrets in a tutorial.  But not having to worry about this undercutting my livelihood gives me the freedom to do crazy things like that,... if anything, it's the only thing I can hope for as a legacy.  After all, one-shot drawings are easily forgotten, but knowledge is forever.  -.-

QuoteXD (put a copyright on that!)

Nah, you're safe.  You've probably realized by now that the C-chan only does VERTICAL faces....

QuoteI'm looking at you cause I never thought I'd see a survivalist Puppy-chan!
I have to start blurting out other random proper nouns and and adjectives and see what comes of it :P

Over the weekend, I did a quick sketch of PilotOS-tan that I think could make for a good "slapshot" (my new term for a very fast one-shot drawing).  I plan to try out some new shading effects for her too, but for the most part it's a great way to debut this historically-important OS-tan.  ^.^

QuoteStill debating whether or not an OS X should make an appearance, though...

In my honest opinion,... unless it's my beloved Pu-chan,......... I think we're good for now.  ^6

QuoteYeah, that was the Unix family caterer...they want me to let you know they're having a roast ham for their holiday dinner!

*sigh*  Again..... -v-;

*ears flop down*
*prepares to be taken away by UNIX MPs*

QuoteI was trying to figure out how to do some kind of interesting lighting...

Well, you're already a master of unique white lighting effects, so I know it won't be a problem for you to create multi-colored highlights.  Essentially, different hair sections will have different colored hues in their highlighted areas.

QuoteDid you just insinuate....?

Hoe?  ^^;

QuoteBrother Techno hath forgoteth his awesomely pro-Linux signature! That shall be worthy of a few points!

Oh trust me,.... he's already in good standing as it is since he has my 12 points... ^^;

QuoteBut yeah, I was a bit inspired with IRIX-tan by a recent TSO concert I went to:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans-Siberian_Orchestra

They play a lot of awesome Christmas songs, and put on one of the most incredible light shows ever!

Speaking of which, I just released my first free random SVG art (which I'll refer to as my "Arte Libre" series) in the Download section, and it just so happens to be something you might be interested in:

http://ostan-collections.net/downloads.php?view=detail&id=105

It was done very quickly, so don't expect an absolutely faithful recreation.  Still, it might give you some ideas for making IRIX-tan's eyecandy a lot like your concert, especially since you can change the colors of those gradients.

I divided it up into 3 different layers, though, since all the Blur and special effects usage is quite memory intensive.  In order to work on one layer, you may need to switch off the other two to avoid any slowdowns.  This is why I can't wait for Inkscape 0.46 and the new Cairo engine that comes with it.  Because Blurring effects were just recently introduced in 0.45, the existing engine is woefully inadequate to handle all the complicated algorithms required, and this really shows here.

QuoteIf you are going to add in one of the OSX-tans, may I suggest adding in Panther-tan? Or a Jaguar-tan would be good too because you haven't drawn either of them yet. But then again, either Leopard-tan or Rhapsody-tan would probably seem like the best candidate of the OSX-tans for the picture because Leopard-tan would have the best appreciation for IRIX-tan's crazy lightshows and Rhapsody-tan hands out bottles of apple cider... or eggnog!

I stand corrected,... an OSX-tan wouldn't hurt.  ^^

Quote1. Slackware-tan looks really cool with her hair down!

2. I've wondered if SCO-tan is permanently confined to crutches.

3. I especially like IRIX-tan and her crazy lightshows!

Yeah, I didn't know how it would turn out with her hair braided...glad you like her, though!

As for SCO, I think she'll need the crutches for a while....whether it's because of her injuries, or an ill-guided attempt to trump up sympathy, it open to interpretation ;)

IRIX-tan can put on a show, but one would tire of them after a while :P

Quote4. If you are going to add in one of the OSX-tans, may I suggest adding in Panther-tan? Or a Jaguar-tan would be good too because you haven't drawn either of them yet. I considered either Panther or Jaguar-tan, but honestly...I thought they might be a little to shy for the part (you'll see!)...Leopard-chan I also considered, seeing as Leopard is the first OSX to meet some Unix standard (I forget which one...), and therefor would be the closest to the Unixes. But in the end I went with our old, tried-and-true....Tiger-sama!

QuoteOh sure,... nowwwwwwwwwwwww he warns me...... -v-;

Hmmm....I suppose I probably wouldn't be here either if it was purely for the art of it. I think the backstories make up a huge part of our artistic community, and is arguably the most difficult part of character design. Probably why I don't do as many Distro-tans as I used to, I'm more interested in the older OS-tans...

QuoteNah, you're safe. You've probably realized by now that the C-chan only does VERTICAL faces....

I only do vertical faces when they suit the point, or when there's no horizontal equivalent, like O____o

Lol, Tiger-tan FTW! ^o^
Definitely wasn't expecting that, yet just as definitely awesome!

I concur with Senpai! ^.^

Great job Bella-sama, I love it! You certainly picked up vector art really quickly. It probably help that you were very artistically gifted beforehand ^-^

Some of my favorite s were the little angel tux, and Bliss-tan. Kawaii ^v^

Wonderful job, Bella-sama. Defiantly becoming one of my desktops. Not only that, but you will be the first person who's not Senpai, whose artwork makes it to my "preferred" desktops folder (meaning they show up more often. ^__^

Though, since when is 1021 x 1024 huge? That's only like 37.8148148% of my screen! ^.^

Aurora Borealis

ZOMG! That is uber-awesome!!

And you got all that done in just a few days after posting up your last progress on that picture!

But now I feel ashamed of myself. It takes at least 3 days for me to finish up each of the ZS special pages I'm working on and there's like no chance of me finishing it up before the 25th like I was hoping :(

And I see you added in Tiger-tan rockin' out on the guitar, which also goes nicely with IRIX-tan's light show! (Hey, the rock n' roll musicians can hire her to the light shows at their performances!) I also see Tinfoil Hat-tan using her electric force field and there's a mysterious girl next to her who seems oblivious to TFH-tan (I'm curious. Who is she?)

Bella

Thanks everyone! I'm glad you guys like it!  ;010

Actually, the hardest part was working with the blurring and stuff...I worked on it a bit every day and spent more time on the weekends.

I think the part where I gain the most efficiency is though not doing much soft-shading, and using a lot of object>clip and boolean operations for the shading...

I think that old mini-tutorial (with 3.1-san, is I am not mistaken) that C-Chan made is seriously underrated ;)

Next to TFH-tan is ArchLinux-tan. I made it a cross between Juzo-kun's and my own.

BeOS-tan aside, somehow I always thought ArchLinux-tan would be a bit like Yuki Nagato, at least in personality...That's why seem seems so...uninterested ;)

Hmmm,... good question.... Guess we'll wait for the Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaambulance to arrive, and we can ask them.  `v'

QuoteIRIX-tan can put on a show, but one would tire of them after a while :P

Given how drastically IRIX usage has dropped, I wouldn't be surprised if IRIX-san hasn't changed her lightshows since the late 90's.  ^^;

QuoteAwesome!!!

When did you make that up?

That very evening when I saw your picture of the TransSiberian Concert.  Did it in about half-an-hour, although near the end it slowed down too much to be workable (which is why I had to break the image up in layers).  I'm just counting the days till 0.46, and hoping it really renders blur effects as fast as I hope it will.  ^____^

Before I add more Arte Libre SVGs, though, I do believe I still have a Pattern Fill tutorial to complete.  ^^;

QuoteIn other news, both Ubuntu-sama and the Christmas picture are looking really good! I've been meaning to comment on them for a long time. ._.;

Tsk tsk tsk,... Siya-san's response time is slow.  Then again,... he gets a lot more artwork done, so I'm jealous.... ^.^

I do have to point out that the production time was definitely very short for such an explosively powerful image!  ^v^

Beastly thing.... Shoo!  SHOO!

QuoteSince it just about crashed my computer :P Either that, or it was my BSOD screensaver making an appearance....

My own primary machine can generally take exports of up to 2000 px width without much complaint.  Past that, however, it gets exponentially slower for some reason.  But again,... has to do with the outdated engine.  In Cairo, thou can seeketh thy salvation.  ^___^

QuoteActually, the hardest part was working with the blurring and stuff...I worked on it a bit every day and spent more time on the weekends.

I think that old mini-tutorial (with 3.1-san, is I am not mistaken) that C-Chan made is seriously underrated

*squeal* ^___^
That sure does make an old, dilapidated pig feel useful.... ^-^
Lately I've been doing that myself if I can help it,... placing the flat shaded objects first, then blurring them later if needed.  And in others, like my latest Puppy-chan, I just downright flat shade the characters and blur whatever needs to be blurred (e.g., clouds).

Admittedly, the mini-tutorial is still applicable for 100% flat-shaded characters, but I myself have stopped using that particular method.  ^^

QuoteNext to TFH-tan is ArchLinux-tan. I made it a cross between Juzo-kun's and my own.

Aa sou,... I did have some trouble identifying ArchLinux-tan and Tinfoil Hat-tan, but that was a very nice touch.  Will say more later.  ^^

QuoteAnd a closeup of Tiger-tan and co.

Holy smokes!  That lightshow looks familiar!  ^v^

In any event, time for my LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG overdue review of your latest and greatest masterpiece.  ^___^
Note that I'm assuming it's complete, so prepare thyself!  ^o^

    UNIX-sama:  She was already great before, so no surprise here (other than perhaps a little more higlights).  The chair looks infinitely better and same for the rod which is now far removed from Slack-tan's chin.  And the sparkly reflection on it is a nice touch) ^^

    I believe this is worth +1 favor points,... to counteract the -1 points for drawing her near so much tinsel.  ^^;

    Slackware-tan:  Now she looks like Slack-tan.  ^___^
    She can use a little pink highlight in the top of her head.

    Linux-sama:  Oooh!  Her dress looks far more radiant than before!  Very impressive, and definitely draws out the gorgeous drapery even further.  ^__^

    I do see some light blue in her hair, but I think it's still too light to realistically reflect the colored light behind her.  More cyan towards the back of her hair and left bang, and some red/pink at the top of her right bang, and maybe some lime green splashed in the middle would probably work.

    IRIX-sama:  This applies to her especially, since the light sources are literally right in her face.  ^^
    If I have a little time, I can probably try drawing what I mean.

    Bliss-tan:  No surprises here, still cute as ever.  ^__^
    However, I'm not sure if that yellow light needs to be in front of or behind her.  If in front, consider adding a white ring within the yellow flare, to give that super-luminiscent look that you mastered so perfectly with the cyan orb.  If behind her, she'll need her, she'll need strong yellow highlights outlining the rim of her body.

    Regardless, her right wing can use a splash of cyan.

    SCO-bouzu:  Curiously bratty. ^___^
    Bliss-tan is blocking some of the light from her, so SCO-tan shouldn't need to inherit any of the lightshow colors save for a little cyan in her right bang.

    Solaris-sama: Her orange hair color is already quite warm, so don't think any yellow coloring is needed.  On the other hand, some darker shading in the back of her head (removing or dimming the highlights there) will help a lot in making the lightshow look bright.

    Puppy-chan:  Don't worry, she doesn't need any colored lighting.  ^___^
    Still impossibly cute (and I hadn't noticed the tail!!  ^V^), but her left leg doesn't look like its angled low enough,... notice how UNIX-sama's foot rest (and Tiger-sama's band) already trains the viewer to feel like the picture is shot not straight-on, but at a top-down angle instead.  In this case, we should still be able to see some of Puppy-chan's left leg, and her foot should rest much lower than Unix-sama's foot rest (or even slightly past the border of the frame).

    Tiger-sama:  Looks like a rockin', sexy, female Santa Claus!!  [er,... RedHat Claus? ^^']
    Absolutely, positively AWESOME character design, and great job with the electric guitar!  (round the top spike and add a whammy bar, and she could have a Les Paul!)
    However, I don't think she'd have any shading at all, since she has a super-strong cyan-white light source behind her, and IRIX-sama's Xmas spectacular in front.  Color her accordingly, and she'll probably be as interesting to view as the tree itself!  ^__^

    ArchLinux-tan:  Wow!  She was one of your first designs, wasn't she?!  ^v^
    Nice to see an old friend.  ^___^
    The bright lighting on her, though, is perfect given her proximity to TFH-tan's shield.

    TFH-tan:  I actually had some trouble making out who she was,.. perhaps strong, thin reflections outlining her tinfoil hat can help.  Otherwise, many kudos on her hands generating the shields -- the special effects here are done very beautifully, and almost rival that of IRIX-sama's!  ^__^

And that's about all I have to add to that.  ^^
Sorry it took days/months/years to post these comments.  -.-;

I gave her a youthful, trendy look as gOS is more commercial than most distros. The sleeves and stocking-thingies are a nod to Mac OS X-tan, as gOS's GUI is a bit Mac-like. I think the color scheme will be very green. I might color her with a darker skintone, as a nod to gOS's Ubuntan heritage, plus I always like to see some diversity :)

SWOONAGE!!!!!!!!!!  ^V^

*gets floored*

I take it you tried out gOS already, which is why you know your on the verge of drawing complete, unbridled win!  ^-^

Anyway, know you wrote a lot, but have a few things to do so will be just posting the lighting suggestions I made earlier.  You don't have to do them, since you're image is already quite detailed -- but maybe it'll come in handy sometime....

Sorry C-chan, I don't have it in an OGG format. Will this do?
