QuoteThat Ubuntu-tan looks fantastic! What techniques are you using for shading?

I employ the "Wing It" technique ;140 No, really, I just sorta tweeked this and that until it looked right.

On the arms, for example, I did a flat block of shading, and then overlayed another block and made that soft. It's hard to explain O__o

QuoteAs for me, I don't know how to shade in Inkscape

You and I both XD

Why not try doing shading in Inkscape?

Added after a while:

OMG!!!! I'm at XP rank!!!!

HOORAY FOR GLORIOUS XP RANK! >w<
And the "wing it" technique is among the most used in the world. Oddly enough. ^-^
YOU COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS

QuoteHOORAY FOR GLORIOUS XP RANK! >w<

You bet!

Before I started using XP, I seriously hated Windows. Actually, all computers XD

All Windows 98 taught me was that computers (and OSs) were rigid and inflexible, instable and frustrating...Though I doubt it was ever "stable", 98 went downhill so fast it was pretty much a trainwreck after about a year or so.

So, after five years of memory-leaking, BSODing fun, I got my current laptop, K8. I can't say things were that stable at first; within six months, the entire motherboard and circuitry system had to be replaced, and AC adapter, and hinges had gone (the later two I understand now are inherent problems with this model). I saw many BSODs during this time, too...

All seemed well for a few months after all of this happened, until one day I saw the BSOD. Needless to say, I panicked. I shut down that computer and didn't turn it on for nine days (XD), until finally I had enough. But on startup, it said the system had encountered a serious error, would I like to do a restore to last good setting? I chose yes and haven't had a crash or seen a BSOD, since.

Viruses, which I feared on Windows 98 (even though it wasn't online much...hehee...), were also a problem on XP, maybe much more of a problem since I was now using high speed wifi. After one December, 2005, day when I found two viruses, I started using Windows auto updates and watching what I downloaded....and I haven't had one virus since.

XP has run beautifully on K8. On my family's other laptop, XP does run a bit laggy...but usually once it is "warmed up", it runs fine. A friend's desktop which I fixed was a piece of garbage, but I did a full restore, deleted all the crapware, and got anti-virus software in place, and it now runs fine.

XP showed me that computers and their OSs can be flexible, stable and effortless to use. With the right precaution, viruses are nothing to fear. I guess, perhaps a bit ironically, it's given me my interest in exploring other OSs, too. In ten years I see myself using a much better, more stable OS and computer, but I'll always have a soft spot for, what I consider to be the last great Windows (to date), and the greatest non-Unix-or-like desktop OS from so many years ago...I think I'll always be willing to take one in ;)

Oh yes, and I'm working on yet another practice pic. I'm not saying what it is, but,

I'm trying to make it as efficient as humanly possible, IE, lots of gradients and such.

I'm using the (3.1-tan) tutorial C-Chan posted as a guide (great BTW!!! Makes life so much simpler!)

And it's a parody of a favorite anime ;)

QuoteThanks

Here's a newer screenshot, I've been messing around w/ gradients:

Ah yes, now we're starting to cook with raging FIYA.  ^___^
Still would like to see your SVG, though,... admittedly, there is the compication of how to actually transport it to me...  ^^;

Let's see if we can come up with a solution....  -.-

QuoteThat Ubuntu-tan looks fantastic! What techniques are you using for shading?

As for me, I don't know how to shade in Inkscape and always have to export to Photoshop to do that -_-

*twitch twitch*  Aurora-dono.... you do have lots of reference SVG files, ya know.... ^^;

The tutorial is old, but it serves as a night practical progression to the new stuff.  ^__^
Besides, it's better that you get used to Boolean operations anyway since they do save you oodles of time.  ^__^

*sweatdrops*

Course you'll probably still eat me, but hey guess it's not all bad.  ^___^;

The only thing I couldn't figure out how to do was that later step (like this)

Anyway, here's  vector sketch so far:

Fullmetal Macintosh!!!

I did a Fullmetal Alchemist parody because, for one thing, System 8-tan sorta reminds me of Ed. In (Aurora's version) she lost an arm and leg, has gone through a lot, but still keeps a very upbeat and optimistic attitude :)  Not to mention she's an incredible fighter ;)

Aurora Borealis

That. IS. AWESOME!!! And yes my rendition of OS 8-tan is based off of Edward! :D Also the spoof of the state alchemy logo is a nice touch!

Awesome! I thought they shared a lot of similarities...hehe :D

(And you saw the Apple "state alchemy logo!" I was wondering if anyone would know what that was ;) )

And today I researched some more DEC OSs....I found a few more, XD

*makes "watching you" hand gesture*

QuoteThe only thing I couldn't figure out how to do was that later step (like this)

Ah sou sou, you mean like how to get that sliver or how to merge it with the rest of the shaded area down below.

This is actually the reason why I've inverted the shading areas in my latest techniques, to avoid dealing with strips like these.  Still, you create it by duplicating the face shape once, then a second time again.  The second duplicate is moved up and to the right a few spaces in order to cover all but the leftmost parts of the first duplicate.  Then a Difference Boolean operation is used so that the second piece cuts away the first, thus leaving that little strip you see in that picture.

Since the strip is at the top, selecting it plus the existing shading, then applying the Union Boolean operation will join the two.  ^.^

QuoteAnyway, here's vector sketch so far:

Very very very very keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewl!  ^.^
I swear you must work for a modeling agency, cause you're sense fashion is,... [insert praise of choice]

It's a very gorgeous job given a) it's a vector sketch, and b) you're still relatively new at Inkscape.  Hopefully it didn't take much time to do either.  ^__^

Just a reminder not to go overboard with gradiants in your final rendition -- like I said before, they're very good for metal surfaces or wherever that metallic look can help accentuate a key feature.  But if they're left to be used for every facet of the body, then the whole image will have an artificial look to it.

Sorry to say to boty of yaz that I haven't seen Fullmetal Alchemist yet.  ^^;

I did tone it down a bit. That's why it's a practice sketch....

And no, it took no more than probably a collective hour or two to get to this point.

I'm trying to do a lot of soft shading, too...It's a little harder, but I've been doing it since day one and I feel that's my "signature" :)

QuoteSorry to say to boty of yaz that I haven't seen Fullmetal Alchemist yet. ^^;

It's a pretty interesting show. It's an action/adventure, but it still has an excellent storyline. And although it's mostly a drama, there's a good amount of comedy.

That's what I've been saying.  ^___^
To dig deep into the history of OS-tans is to uncover a rich, exciting unexplored world of culture, epic win, and swoonage potential.  I'd think of it as the RL equivalent of traveling back in time to the era depicted in the Mahabharata and Ramayana.  ^.^

Here's the alpha, or maybe beta, or whatever, of that Mac OS 8 pic:

I still can't shake that feeling that the skin color's off, though...

And I may do some work on a GEM-tan/Lisa-tan pic. I see these two as close, given that both were hurt by Mac OS 1-tan (GEM-tan's case, physically [I think they got into a battle] and Lisa-tan's case, emotionally)

C-Chan

Oooooh, Tempo-chan beta look like she's kicking major rear.  ^___^

I don't think you have much to worry about the skin color -- if by that mean her face is lighter than her leg, I can see it's because of the light on the fuse (and greater shading on the leg).  There are a few other hings that you should clamp down on while it's still in beta mode.  ^__^

- Try adding a white or light colored circle or star inside the orange fuse (refer to my new Star Tool tutorial for inspiration... ^.^).  That way it'll look more like its a sparkling fuse.  ^v^

- If the fuse is particularly bright, you might try darkening up the shadows near her face to increase the drama.  At least a shadow casted by her thumb on the bomb could help.

- Better add the curves to her rainbow skirt now so we can grade your draping sk1llzr here in Inkscape.  Otherwise, we're gonna assume you want it stiff.  ^___^'

- Same with her left shoe.  We need the tip and heel to look 3D.

- I kinda mulled it over ho-hum before, but somehow I feel like the right shoe would look better behind her leg.  A bit hard to describe, but I think it'll enhance the picture that way.... '__'

I dunno really, but if you wait 5 minutes I can probably draw what I mean by most of these comments.  ^__^

Added after 15 minutes:

Ready!

Even though I don't have the original SVG, I still added the adjustments in Inkscape so you compare and contrast.  Just be sure to unzip the two files together, and hide Layer 1 in order to see the changes I made in Layer 2.

Also, didn't add much detail to the right foot, but hopefully you see what I mean.  ^___^

I know what you mean, I think...instead of her leg coming out to the right, have it toward the left? I might do that, it wouldn't be hard...

That could be a bit hard, since, surprise, it was done with a gradient : | I'll work on it, though ;)

Aurora Borealis

Very nice! I especially like what you did with the eyes in the alpha version! Shiny! :D

C-Chan

QuoteThat could be a bit hard, since, surprise, it was done with a gradient : | I'll work on it, though

Oh right, I mean just carving the skirt object a little.  Inkscape, like Photoshop, won't allow you to modify the shape of a linear gradient.  You COULD try using a radial gradient and have the center off to the side so that the curvilinear portion is used on the dress, but that probably won't give us the effect we want.  ^.^'

There is another option we could do, but,... hmmmm,.................. *light bulb flashes*  standy by!  ^v^

QuoteVery nice! I especially like what you did with the eyes in the alpha version! Shiny!

Yeah, the highlights on the eyes are very well done -- a good use of blurring effects in the right spot.  ^__^
The eye lashes themselves could use a more pointed edges, now that I look at it.  Try this [for example] on the lower eyes lash.....

1 - select the rounded stroke that makes up the lower left eye lash, and convert it to a flat-ended stroke.

2 - Select Path>Stroke to Path, and the eyelash will be turned into an editable path, complete with nodes.  ^.^

3)  the corner of the eye lash willl have two nodes by now,... just delete one, and modify the bezier handles of the remaining one to get the eyelash all curvy and feline.  ^___^

4)  Rinse and repeat on other such strokes if you want  the same effect.  ^__^
Don't forget about all the cool stuff you can do with nodes that I describe in the Edit Tool of the tutorial.  ^.^
