QuoteFirst off, I highly recommend Bella-san try NimbleX, Bob-san demands it so! Give me Slack or Give me Death!

Oh right, I forgot I need to check that out too.  ^__^
First things first,... a new discovery....

http://www.geubuntu.intilinux.com/Home.html

In your typical "Speak of the Devil" moment, this distro purports to be Ubuntu with the Enlightenment E17 desktop.  @o@
Guess it's next on my download queue after I finish getting Mandriva 2008.  ^^
(may take a while, since it seems like no one's seeding.... T__T').

QuoteI wouldn't give that too much bearing on whether or not to use GNOME though, from what I read he just seemed to be ranting over some obscure little detail (something about not being able to use his mouse just like he wanted it). Before I am accused of blasphemy, I must say I mean no respect to our OS god, and let us not forget we have one other in Stallman-san.

You're probably reading from the same article as I did, although from a developer's standpoint, mouse actions are probably nowhere near as obscure as they are to us n00bish end users.  Admittedly, in apparently typical Linus-style, he addresses this with hardly any tact....  ^^;

http://www.linux.com/articles/114231
(note that the comments are probably a better read than the article itself!  ^v^)

Stallman I kinda think of more as a GNU/GPL god rather than just limited to Linux, since Open Sourc stretches far and wide, from Linux and BSD, to Windows and Mac, to even AROS and ReactOS.  I wonder if he might approve of the fact that KDE is striving to be fully cross-platform.  I for one would love to have KOffice accessible in Mac and Windows, since I love that charming little suite.  ^.^

QuoteI haven't learned Kanji yet, we start with Hirigana and Katakana and we probably won't learn Kanji until Japanese 4. The focus of the class now is to learn to read/write all we can in Hirigana and Katakana and also to be able to speak as much as we can in Japanese. I should get as much practice as I can not using Romanji (it will help to use more actual Japanese on tests), but alas that would mean much copypasta since I can't actually type in Japanese (I know there's a way to do it, but I'm sure it involves alot of combo button presses).

There's a wizard in PCLinuxOS and SAM (and I assume Mandriva as well) that helps automate the setup of SCIM/SKIM for any language that you need.  In the *Buntus, I believe the process is a bit more involved, but it's definitely possible to set up SCIM/SKIM properly (I did for a while):

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=396135&highlight=scim

Once installed, SCIM works just like the Windows Language Bar.  When working in a document editor that supports SCIM input, you hit a particular keyboard combination to activate alternate language support (usually CTRL+ALT+SPACE), then just type in romaji.  All none-capitalized words will convert to their japanese equivalents -- and hitting space after finishing a word will bring up possible Kanji and Katakana combinations.

May take some getting used to, but given you're taking classes in it, I advise that you do.  `v'

eek gahd, pop-ups abound... they're using flyupload for the direct download, I can't even get the torrent on my computer.

Now that I recall, he may have been among the people making comments on my Cthulhu wallpaper.  Wait, he likes Linux, too, doesn't he?  Maybe he'd be interested in working on a Cthulhu theme!

In other news, the OS-tans were mentioned in my anime club tonite, my inner fanboy was jubilant.  btw. The VP of our group would have a field day in here, with all the loli fan-boys to mock and whatnot, lol.

Okay, I'm off!  ^0^

IanDanKilmaster

Too late Buta-senpai... I finally drudged my way through the pop-ups to my own copy of Geubuntu, but thanks for the effort (if that's the dark version or have access to it, I'd be most obliged).  Doomo!

I mentioned the whole loli thing b/c I know you like to tease Captain-san about it, haha.  I figured you wouldn't mind some backup... of the fairer sex.  She's not a he, believe it or not.  She said she found out about them when she saw a wikipe-tan (she said she was cute).  I'm not sure how interested she'd be in joining this forum, but according to her statement she'd probably be interested in seeing more OS-tans (she seems to already have a basic understanding of the whole breastss (extra s comically intended) = RAM thing).  Anyway, I'll mention this place in our anime forum (whenever the damn thing is back up), it'll give me a reason to boost my post count there (I haven't posted there in forever).

Hahaha!  You put up with that?  ^^;
I ditched it and looked for another download site the minute I was being offered a free iPhone.  -v-;

In any event, it's kind of a false alarm since,... meh,... wasn't terribly impressed with it.... T__T
I mean it was nice and all, and had the cool standard Enlightenment login menu and all,....

But once I was in the desktop, I didn't know what the heck I was looking at, since I saw the Enlightenment Taskbar tool in the bottom, and the Gnome Panel on top.  @__@'
Coupled with the unusually-slow performance for an E17 desktop, and I could almost swear Geubuntu ran Gnome AND Enlightenment... TOGETHER!!!  Talk about a waste of resources (if that's true).... ^^;

Then again, so far I only tried out Moonlight -- Sunshine might be better.... maybe....  Â¬Â¬

ã,ã,そう,... I stand corrected.  ^^

Might be possible since GNOME does not have a Window manager on its own and instead relies of different external WMs. Enlightenment used to be standard WM at one point.

I hate to interrupt the distro testing, but I need to make sure everyone knows that WE have a new fight on our hands:

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/barf/3924
http://www.informationweek.com/industries/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=202402099

This only applies to the US and any other country stupid enough to recognize software patents.  But any help we can offer can only help strengthen our position -- after all, this isn't a fight against no-name patent trolls, but rather proxies of a certain well-known adversary....  Â¬Â¬

Bella

QuoteOkay, I can help you out with these.... -v-

If you want to mount your external USB hard drive, go into the USB submenu of your virtual machine's main menu, select the Enable USB Controller, and then [very important] click on the SECOND icon which features a USB connector with a plus sign. This one reads "Add from List", and when selected gives you a drop-down of ALL the devices that are currently hooked up to your USB ports. Naturally, select the one which sorta/kinda sounds like your external hard drive, and ONLY that one (don't add keyboards and mice). ^.^

When you turn on your VM, your device will disappear from your Windows desktop, but become available in VM Buntu. ^__^

I tried that with the pen drive. Nada.

I mean, it seemed to mount...it left XP, and the VM menu said it was active, but I never saw in on Ubuntu...

I should still give it a try with the HD, though.

QuoteFirst off, I highly recommend Bella-san try NimbleX, Bob-san demands it so! Give me Slack or Give me Death!

I've tried Zenwalk, which sounds a lot like NimbleX but with Xfce instead of KDE...

To once again use a NejinOniwa phrase...Ohshi-!

O...M...G...Just imagine if a Windows developer and Gates got into a public fracas like that? I mean, the developer probably wouldn't have a job for very long...

Geez....who hasn't Acacia research sued?

And their patent portfolio reads like a traveling salesman...DNA purified, smartcards verified, V-chips tranquilized, processors powerized, e-comerce ratified, great graphics gratified- I should stop here, right?

It seems it's always Novell in the hot seat....and this ad I saw next to the article doesn't sit well with me O__o

Novell Microsoft....Isn't this fulfilling an ancient prophecy hinted at in Revelations? XD

C-Chan

Yep, right on the mark yet again, Bella-san.  ^__^

Actually,... the fact that they're being sued when they, in fact, made a deal with M$ NOT to be sued, can only mean two things:

1) They're still allies, and the lawsuit will progress in a way that will help Novell's image and likewise hurt their main competitor Red Hat, or...

2)  M$ pulled a fast one, and they sued Novell anyway,... just not,... *cough cough* ...."directly":.  ^__________^

But yes, I just can't STAND businesses that make a living suing people.  It's almost as bad as mega corporations being formed to email spam or send out credit card offers.  If people need to screw others in order to make a living, then there's something seriously wrong with what we call "life".  T__T

In any event, glad to have you on board with us, Bella-san.  ^__^

IanDanKilmaster

On a related topic, WTF is up with Steve Ballmer alleging software patent infringements?  This isn't going to end in another one of those lousy-ass deals ala Novell/Microsoft is it?  Bill Gates can kiss the hairiest portion of my posterior.  This patent infringement B.S. is starting to really piss me off.  It's s*** like this that wells up such a bastion of M$ resentment among all computer users (non-Windows and Windows alike).  I'm against it with you, Piggy-senpai!

The Choice of a New Generation.

C-Chan

Thank you, IDK-san.  ^^

I'm not terribly worried by this, since I have faith that the community will rally behind Red Hat (and with some nose-holding, Novell too).  -v-

In addition, the patents being challenged are a bit.... idiotic.....  TvT

User interface with multiple workspaces for sharing display system objects
United States Patent 5072412

Abstract:
Workspaces provided by an object-based user interface appear to share windows and other display objects. Each workspace's data structure includes, for each window in that workspace, a linking data structure called a placement which links to the display system object which provides that window, which may be a display system object in a preexisting window system. The placement also contains display characteristics of the window when displayed in that workspace, such as position and size. Therefore, a display system object can be linked to several workspaces by a placement in each of the workspaces' data structures, and the window it provides to each of those workspaces can have unique display characteristics, yet appear to the user to be the same window or versions of the same window. As a result, the workspaces appear to be sharing a window. Workspaces can also appear to share a window if each workspace's data structure includes data linking to another workspace with a placement to the shared window. The user can invoke a switch between workspaces by selecting a display object called a door, and a back door to the previous workspace is created automatically so that the user is not trapped in a workspace. A display system object providing a window to a workspace being left remains active so that when that workspace is reentered, the window will have the same contents as when it disappeared. Also, the placements of a workspace are updated so that when the workspace is reentered its windows are organized the same as when the user left that workspace. The user can enter an overview display which shows a representation of each workspace and the windows it contains so that the user can navigate to any workspace from the overview.

Mind you, this was applied for in 1991 -- and yet AmigaOS (5 years earlier, had stuff like this already and even IT wasn't entirely innovative at the time.  ^^;

Wanna know what the other two are?

Look familiar, don't it?  And these were applied for in 1995.  ^^;
I know it's a US (Texan?!) court, but since Red Hat/Novell already have seasoned lawyers straight off the SCO fight, I think they're experienced enough to know how to work the system.

We'll see, but in the meantime, I vow to do something a HELLUVA lot more constructive than praying for the best.  `v'

[COMPIZ FUSION, YEAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!  ^V^]

IanDanKilmaster

Really, I wasn't entirely worried so much about the Acacia case, the articles you posted provided info which leads me to believe it won't be much more than SCOII.  The info provided by Bella-san also helped to relieve me (a belated thank you from me, Bella-san).  What concerned me was the statement made by Steve Ballmer not too much earlier than this that I think many would perceive as a threat.  At the same time, this was such a short time in fact, that many (including yourself, Piggy-senpai) would say the two events were totally related, that Acacia were in collusion with M$.  Me, I don't know, I think both companies have made it clear that they're no friends of the open source community, which obviously includes Linux.  At the same time, its' pretty convenient that Acacia has so many former M$ employees.  Could Acacia's suit against M$ be a smokescreen?  Possibly.  I just don't find it very... logical... if M$ were to win it's suit against Acacia, where would that leave Acacia vs. Linux?  I would say that the suit was very weak to begin with, but losing to M$ would take out all the legs from under it.  I'm just concerned of further threat from M$ is all.

I know that is totally off-topic and not to get personal or anything, but I've noticed you've referred to the United States externally in each of your posts (not that there's anything wrong with that, sometimes I wish I could myself ^__^').  So just out of curiosity I translate the text that's under your location and it says "Vintage League", now I know google isn't reknowned for always having the most accurate translations, but I assume this means you're from England?  Not British, but English?  Feel free to say you don't want to answer... I'd totally understand, but it's just something I haven't been able to figure out (I haven't had the opportunity to notice those words which Canadians and English spell differently than us United Statesians).

The Choice of a New Generation.

C-Chan

Bwahaha!  ^v^
Indeed the "Binteji Renmei" stands for the "Vintage Federation".  ^__^
Don't mind it as it's only a fictitious location where all the vintage OS-tans live (AmigaOS-tan, Commodore64-tan, AtariDOS-tan, etc.).  A fusion of "Vintage" with "Haibane Renmei", a very wonderful anime that I recommend watching:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haibane_Renmei

Oh, and to answer one of your questions, I'm Mexican.  Not that it makes me any prouder, since Mexico's been in shambles for well over 70 years.  Still, it's nice to be able to be in the States or Canada and look at things a little differently.  -v-
(I'm planning to go to undisclosed South American countries next year, just to change the scenery a bit, and to verify if there really ARE people trying to dig themselves out of the dirt rather than wallow in it [as I often feel when I'm home]).

Returning to the court case, here's another possibility.... Suppose Acacia's case against M$ is not just a smokescreen, but also indirect funding as well?  After all, M$ probably paid the SCOsters A LOT OF MONEY under the tables to run their company into the ground -- it's the only way I can possibly explain such insolence and stupidity.  Once this company goes down in flames in a humiliating loss, M$ will simply get another proxy, then another, then another.  It's an unfortunate detail of our society that there's no shortage of CEO's who'd sell off their business and their employees for personal gain.  -__-

Why M$ hasn't simply opted to sue itself says a lot as to what they're trying to hide.  In the even they're ever forced to open up their source code, there would be hell to pay for the ton of patent and copyright violations found therein.  ^^'

All we can do in the meantime is twofold: a) slug it out with these "mercenaries" to buy time until we, b) pull the business out from underneath them.  Once enough people and business convert to open source models (not just in the Western world, but also in the emerging markets), there'll be no choice but to institute some kind of patent reform in the States, thus choking M$ revenue line.  This is possible, with the right marketing paradign -- ironically, the only thing we have to fear is government intervention on behalf of proprietary software companies (you know, those who are there to protect the Free Market by destroying it... ^^;).
