As it happens, those Titan II complexes were all deactivated 25 years ago.  That friend I'd mentioned, Stewart, was in the Air Force at about the same time as me:  c. 1965-69.

Stewart passed away two-and-one-half years ago, after a lengthy fight with bone-marrow cancer.  He'd spent the previous 30 years in the field of social work; and he was my therapist, working out of the Vet Center here in Portland, for the 12 years prior to his illness forcing him to take medical retirement.

It's my view, as it was his, that extended contact with fumes from volatile missile propellants contributed to his illness.  Anyway, Stewart was a Missile Combat Crew Commander back in the day and would have been one of the two people on duty at that Titan II complex to simultaneously turn a key (not press a button) enabling missile launch.

Since I'm alive to write this ââ,¬â€ and you to read it ââ,¬â€ it's obvious the launch order was never given.  Stewart told me that he'd initially decided to obey a launch order (the crew talked about this frequently) but after a few months changed his mind and intended to refuse such an order; yet during the final months of his commission he came to resign himself to following a launch order.

He explained that the person second in command would have simply ordered somebody else to turn the other key.  (There were four people on duty in the control room at all times.)  Please forgive my digression from the thread topic!

Well, this wallpaper is so... calm, and has it's strange points :p
By the way, I realized that you change wallpapers so often. What are your reasons? Do you want to find the best? Or because of variety?

Love the wallpaper MisterCat! it's kinda trippy/hippy-ish but still nice ;010

Exa, you're right:  I do change my desktop wallpaper often.  I might suddenly see another potential-wallpaper image which I really like; or I'll just get bored staring at the existing wallpaper and begin a wallpaper hunt.

Mind, I really like my recent wallpaper which showed the totally-gorgeous Johanna kneeling on a beach in Nova Scotia; but then "something came over me" and I put up that artistic diagram of a Titan II missile complex.  However, it soon struck me as being perhaps a bit too stern an image; so now it's all butterflies, plants and a rabbit-ears chick.

Brouge, like, far out and right on!  It's a groovy scene indeed, man.

Now you mentioned, I realized that I'm the same type, one wallpaper stands for a month, but another for only one day - yes, I'm changing again. The source is the same game and the pic is from the same site.

nice 1 exa

i usually keep my wallpaper for at least one weak...and that's because not just any image would do for my wallpaper :P
i like quality BGs :D

Megaman Z

I have wallpaper cycler 3.1 on my machine, which not only changes my wallpaper every 10 minutes but also does some quick visual work on the image to add some variety...

of course, when you only look at it once every hour or two, you tend not to notice.

i'm usually not too fond of things that make an OS pretty, Windowblinds isn't that bad actually but DesktopX is one of those bugging, snacking programs, and i only use them when it's actually practical
I use windowblinds myself for example for a better overview of things and a cleaner look, but disabled all animations i'm pretty happy with it And animations really do snack, try disabling the shortcut menu animations on a mac G5 and see how fast it can launch an app, for XPpro it takes less I guess but still I don't recommend any animation of GUI.

I had a similar program called Wallmaster which does a similar thing but I think without the visual edits. I could really confuse people with 1-minute(!) wallpaper changes...

Stoy

This is my desktop, the console thing in the corner and be found at sourceforge by searching for "Console" it's just a skin for cmd.exe....

OMG that's hilarious!  ^v^

What distros, btw?  I see the KDE desktop, but no other marking I recognize.  Is that the 64-bit machine you were referring to earlier?

Kami-Tux

It was a Kubuntu. Yeah, it's my 64-bit machine, my precious. I now use a Gentoo with a picture from the Wikicommons of a Myanmarese temple
