You know, ive been a fan of the OS Tans for a while, and originaly I would have said 2k hands down.. but now.. I think its probobly 3.1 oddly enough. However, 98 and 95 are close seconds. what can I say I like older systems?

I just have to go with my favorite os of all time, 2k-Pro. Suprisingly enough, i realised that i also love my favorite OS's personification most also. I think its the attributes of both that make them so appealing. Well im going with 2k-tan on this one.

There are some few there that haven't got their "rare" ones exposed, not to mention the other "-tans" and "-kuns who are "not in the main cast". But what Juzu-kun did really helped. For me, it doesn't matter if the thing is not that popular. What you like is what you like. If you feel those things then go represent it, I'm sure that's what her purpose is.
Who knows those rare ones have some comic strips although it's either not exposed (what you said) or the other's just can't accept it.

For me, I can't decide between 95-tan and Firefox-ko. I like 95-tan because of her split personality between warrior and "average" woman. Also, my first computer ran Windows 95. Firefox-ko, because Firefox is my favorite browser and the character design is the best of all the OS-tans. I usually prefer to propagate other people's designs other than my own -- aside from an issue of convenience, it helps expand recognition for the design efforts of others, and paves the way for new canon characters. ^.^ My take on RedHat-tan? I'll probably keep her paired with Fedora-tan, since the two form something of a Linux "hit squad" in my mind (probably because of how they're dressed). Speaking of weird fantasies and shady boards, what exactly would be considered our "competition" [as an English-language OS-tan forum/message board]? I may act like a petulent pig, but the truth is that I'm still relatively new and unversed in the ways of the OS-tan grapevine.
The only other such site that I've seen frequented regularly is Wakachan, and even then it's not enitrely devoted to OS-tans. (Probably the reason I'm so hesitant to post there.) -__-'

My favorite would be 95-tan, followed by XP-tan (Both Professional and Homeko), CE-tan (I do use a PocketPC for college ;) ), and 2K-tan.

Let me say right away that my favorite operating-system girl is XP-tan, the Professional version. Having said that, I hasten to add it's my view all the OS Girls are equal in the sight of the Cosmos. (How am I doing so far?)
Running a distant second to XP-tan would be two girls who aren't affiliated with operating systems per se: Firefox-ko and Thunderbird-ko. They're a team, those two, so I don't want to separate them!
XP-tan reminds me of my best friend, though at an earlier age. You see, I reserve the right to create my own imaginary world for fictional characters; but I respect the various personalities as they've been created by others, unless I find certain traits unflattering ââ,¬â€ in which case I reject them.
For example, this whole business about XP-tan being a gourmand doesn't fit my concept of her; hence, I reject it. Cast me into the Eternal Fires of OS-tan Hell if you will, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

In my little world of make-believe, XP-tan is an Alpha chick who thus incurs the dislike of other young females. It's that way in real life: The popular gal with the great body is roundly scorned by other gals, those whose positive attributes they themselves fail to value.

Here's what gets me about Japanese art, as it pertains to anime/games/manga characters and possibly by extension to the OS Girls: How come all the gals have flat butts? Why are their legs too long? What's with the pointy chins? Why the fixation with the combination of laughably-huge breasts, skinny legs and matchstick arms? How can they breathe or eat with such tiny mouths?
I'm very glad to see the OS Girls aren't necessarily afflicted by these artistic clichés; and that's one reason I like them! If it were up to Japanese artists the OS Girls would all have mouthless hatchet faces, blimp-like breasts, no butts and dowels for arms and legs. Three cheers for Occidental fan art!

I noticed from :::: ALIEN1452.COM:::: (http://www.alien1452.com/) that Korean artists have a much better handle on human anatomy than do their Japanese counterparts.
Anyway, that's all a digression from the OS Girls. The OS-tans I've seen are, in the main, nicely drawn; and for that, I'm thankful!

So yes, it's a little bit of regional morphology (e.g., flat butts, short heights, low obesity), a little bit of taste (e.g., balloon cleavage on 70% of all female characters, vast prevalance of "Sailor Moon"-style stilts-for-legs) and a dab of culture (pointy chins based off the "shi" kana, which was probably predates 20th century work). But the oversimplification of these features, plus the lack of muscle definition, matchstick extremeties and large eyes, is purely cost-driven. It's easier to animate and more efficient to get your point across; in the case of the eyes, emotions become indisputably clear, wheras in the case of breasts, highlighting them in such a way increases their marketability to target audiences. I don't recall that tiny mouths were overly-prevalent in early Anime, but the moment it became apparent that "cute" female characters were hot sellers, BEHOLD...! Now nearly every female character in contemporary Anime has a tiny mouth, tiny nose, memorable eyes, a charismatic demeanor (= not a smartass), and cute legs-arms-breasts-hands-feet-ass-etc.... And obviously it works if it's hooked so many fans around the world. (Just ask the Captain what he wants for his birthday.... -v-) More importantly, however, Anime is ultimately successful because it views the art portion as a means to the end, and not the other way around. Cheap animation is used to ultimately convey a tantalizing story and rich characters (well, for the most part,... I admit that, just like with regular movies, there's an awful lot of crappy titles floating around). And it's precisely because the artwork is so efficient, there are enough resources left over to embellish the presentation of said artwork. Full-motion battle frames and shading/shadowing effects are drawn with equal simplicity, but applied in such a way that it often adds stunning, dramatic and at times breath-taking detail to a scene. To use an old stereotype, the drawing style has a particular "zen" quality to it: simple, but elegant in its simplicity. Oh, and I should note that manga often follows this same paradign as well, since it's often a single artist that draws the whole thing himself/herself. Given the size of the task, and the suffocating competition within the Japanese market, corners must be cut somehow.... Or you get yourself a staff...... Or, if need be,... you cheat....^__^

They don't all look like that. Many Japanese artists will base their drawings on what they see. Namely, Japanese people and American people. Cuz you the Japanese love American culture. Why else do they love baseball? And many artists have their own style, too. Some like to go realistic, others cute, others exaggerated sexy. Most are somewhere in between.

I try to go for more realistic proportions meself. But Jeff needs to learn how to draw real people first. Even though anime is a simplified form of the human body, a good understanding of the real human body is almost required for the amazing anime artist.
Thank you very much, C-Chan, for your clear and witty explanation of what's what anatomy-wise in the anime genre! I forgot to mention the impossible cranial hair some characters have, but that oddity doesn't bother me anywhere near as much as the ridiculous anatomy.
Again, that's one of the big reasons I like the OS Girls: They tend to look like human beings ââ,¬â€ very nice-looking humans, to be sure, in most cases. So, artists of OS-tans, keep up the good work!

I'll continue to cringe at what the Flat Butt School of Art produces, but at least now I know it's simply a money-making gimmick. Compare early 90's enemy with most of the contemporary stuff, and you'll note that there has generally been a signficant reduction in character detail. Pixar/Brad Bird: CG animation, the new "thing" that's "in". -v-'
Not bad in itself if done right, but certainly displaced traditional 2D animation here.
Matt Groening: cheaply drawn also, but it's a comedy so it compliments it. Unfortunately it could still classify as an an adult cartoon, so kids still won't necessarily be exposed to it.
Parker/Stone: even MORE cheaply done, but again compliments the comedy and helps their series go on endlessly. (Plus their last movie was with CG and puppets.) Even LESS for kids.
Family Guy: same reasons above. Besides I kinda like this one. Never did say we couldn't do comedy (even if it is crude) -- just said we've let the artist quality of our animation, especially for children's programming, degrade... A LOT.
Considering what I watched when I was a kid, I worry that my own kids will have nothing to watch but shallow animation with shallow stories. That's why I stock up on excellent titles now. That includes really old Disney, as well as Miyazaki and the like. -v-
I agree! New Disney sucks! Cmon' science! Unfreeze Walt Disney ASAP! Kids animation is sorely lacking, not just in Disney, but in Nickelodeon and and Cartoon Network! What is all this crap about Invader Zim being cancelled for Fairly Odd Parents? That series was off the hizzle!

My faves: Secchan and XP!!
Secchan simply out of nostalgia and having used her the longest on my old IBM Aptiva desktop with voodoo 3 and AMD K6 366MHz (it was like the latest thing in '99), I still used that thing for like 5 years after i got it. And I used win3.11 a lot too when i was little.
and XP for her stability (yes it's pretty damn stable) when you feed XP enough she'll never let you down!
well it of course takes 1GB of high quality Corsair RAM and and AMD64, BUT it runs very smoothly :)
Mines getting fed off of 4 gigs of ram, shes quite happy and fat.
Tho Ill stick to my choices of 3.1 and doskitty, Hacchan, and 95. I grew up with those systems and I love the design.

i think he just answered both, vista has even MORE special effects and animated menus, windows,etc. as far as i saw in some videos of it in action.

b)The version of windows I use most (though I use OS X or Fedora more)
c) the first OS-tan I ever saw.

Hacchan is 98-tan, portrayed as a schoolgirl wearing a navy blue and white school uniform with the Windows logo on her tie, has a blue "Zatch Bell"-inspired mech box which she usually hides in. Often seen with 98SE-tan.

Personally i think the mac-tans are all too pale...but that's probably because there's way less people caring about them.
Anyways, my personal favorite...I can't decide on one, but the top is Inu-T, 2k-chan and 95-sama. Inu-T, cause she's a...dog...and irresistibly kawaii; 2k-chan because, well, meganekko, need i say more?; and 95-sama...one word. MOOD SWINGS. She totally rocks...also she's got a kimono, which is teh good.

Well, come to think of it, I agree NejinOniwa.. at least if I understood him correctly (pale? as in.. like shallow?) Their designs are cute I guess... but honestly just making a cat girl with the patern the system is named after.. dosnt seem to original or inovative. again you all know I hate boring tans that arnt that well thought out. I like Sonata, the cute artist girl that throws bombs when she gets really angery.. but these cat ones.. i havent heard anything about them that makes me think there is any depth to their character. Like NejinOniwa said about the windows tans.. they all have something unique visualy and personality wise to make them lovable. and there isnt a set system to it.. otherwise vista would have been top heavy, ate ungodly abounts of food and would wear nothing but tape over her nipples cus the system eats more and pays more to visual look then anything else from what ive seen, but instead.. shes a fucking ninja. or a sailor scout.. or... well you get the idea. they make each unique and for that they are more interesting. and this is coming from a rabid supporter of cat girls.
You're right, I agree that the OS X cat girls are rather under developed. My reasoning is:
a) While each of the actual OS's has differed quite a bit, graphically, they are mostly the same
b) Apple deployed six versions of OS X (counting Intel vs. PPC) in six years, whereas Microsoft released one. This gives the artists less time to explore possible variations and give depth
c)Less people draw Mac-tans = Less variations = Less Ideas
Still I really like Leopard-tan!
Reasoning C pretty much sums it all in a nutshell. -v-
Sonata-san and Generic-san were both pretty bland for me as well at first,... up until I encountered the legendary Mac Manga. After reading through 68 pages of finely-crafted insanity and perversion, suddenly I have characters who's seedy antics far surpass those of anything Homeo and Friends could dish out. -v-
As for the OSX girls, we'll see....

Variations is the big complaint people have about tans these days!! Like the consel tans, cant find a consistant design!
Problem with that C-Chan is that.. one manga should not define a character in this fandom. The PC oses have personalitys that every artist (well jsut abotu every) understands and captures in their drawings. their personality comes from the countless individuals drawing them and supporting them.
You can try, but I doubt that one person can creat enough propoganda to turn the tide. You will need a much better meathod to attract people to their character if you hope to supass the PC OSes.. that and your going to have to change the fact that the MS oses are more used in the world so more people can appriciate the quirks in thier characters.

But returning back to the topic at hand, when it comes to the Mac-tans we come face to face with the dreaded Catch 22 of the OS-tan world....
More artists won't volunteer to draw a single design unless it's guaranteed to be popular (otherwise, why bother,... just draw your own). And yet,... it can't be popular unless more artists volunteer to draw that design. ^___^'
It worked for the Windows-tans due to the novelty at the time, and (as you say) because of the huge user space. Macs, naturally, are seriously outgunned. Said fanbase gives the Windows-tans such gems as the legendary XP YouTube thingie and the OS-tan Idol video. The Mac fanbase, on the other hand, barely scrapes by with a cute albeit easily overlooked manga. -v-
So in all seriousness it would seem we're screwed,...
But I say it's time for a rallying call, and a complete rethink on how we're gonna go about evening the odds. ^__^

dont get me wroung -_- we arnt coming down on you.. just pointing it out. as supporters of the tans we have to be very carefull not to repeat their mistakes. Also.. if we show too much support of thier stuff that could be bad as well (that and i think NTs designe in those comics was terribly unoriginal)

Do keep in mind that the Captain long ago said he'd love to install Windows 3.1-sama on his Dell XPS laptop (the one with all that red), so already we have people who would be really really interested in having their favorite vintage OS work with modern hardware.
While she would be released by M$ as a "toy" for compute hobbyists, the number of Windows fans FAR outnumber Linux ones, and (coupled with the existing library of OSS knowledge and applications vs what was available 15 years ago) 3.1-sama would turn into a dual-core processing, DVD-reading, server-running, 3D-accelerated uber OS very quickly! ^___^
Case in point, the Linux kernel, is not fundamentally dissimilar from the same one released back in 1990, yet has been continuously maintained by a relatively small and loyal community to the point where it can stand head-to-head with any serious UNIX or Windows system. Also, Apple recently released their old Darwin OS to hobbyists, and that too has quickly turned from "toy" UNIX-like system, to viable desktop alternative OS by its many supporters.
Another thing is that sooner or later, people will want to port "Open3.1-sama" to other systems, as they've done with Linux. Imagine running "Open3.1-sama", not just in the laptop you have (no point in buying it with Linux preinstalled, btw, if you can install it yourself for free on any old laptop), but also in your Palm, your Playstation, your PowerPC, your ARM computer, your SPARC server, your IBM mainframe, etc.

I already got virtual PC and im downloading 3.1 and msdos 6.22 through a torrent right now... she just wont do alot of modern things when i play with her.. tho my old games will work again

Every time i use a mac I rue the experience. I dont like the feel of it. Every time i go back and try to give it another chance i quickly feel like I made that judgement in error. It has nothing to do with the brand name I could care less about that. Im the one that complains the most when someone rants about not using windows because of how evil microsoft it. I dont like the way its used. I dont think Ive ever had a good experience with a mac, baybe the cosmos has just decended bad fate upon me, but thats the way it has been.

Both of the 98s are my favorites. Sometime-shy, little troublemakers. I like how Hacchan looks more than I do with Secchan though, but I like Secchan's ferocious attitude.
I also like 3.1. I think she is absolutelyyyyyyy adorable, and really, her clothes are so pretty. And who doesn't love the cute little dos cat? ;o

Wikipe-tan (although I don't think she counts)
Firefox-tan (I use the browser all the time)
or
2k-tan (cause she's the most reliable)

I like 2k-tan cause she's the great XP's sister system :D
Now that I know more about the OS-tans, I actually like most of the characters....Homeko (and Saseko) I like purely on the association with my favorite OS, Windows XP. But characters like Amiga-sama, Linux-sama, OS X Tiger-tan as well as quite a few others, I also like...come to think of it, the only characters I dislike are Dr. Norton-kun, and I guess the OS X-kuns...XD

Unfortunately, that's somewhat true. Microsoft should change his strategy, stop being too aggressive and actually learning to improve their OS's far more than their counterparts. I don't see Mac as a real threat to Microsoft. Linux is the most serious threat, but it's not close enough yet to deal a fatal blow. I guess that's why Microsoft is still trying to attack them instead of learning. Also, I was talking about mascots, not real OS'es. I should also improve my sarcasm abilities. XP-tan being closer to 2k-tan because of Vistan reminds me of a 4koma years ago when 2k-tan being closer to ME-tan because of XP-tan. Being hard on the youngest eh? Now about XP-tan's personality and such, I could portrait her as a girl in which children could easily relate and interact with. I believe she has a sweet manner to people, although early anonymous artist took more advantage of "more memory, bigger mass" concept than giving her a more in-depth character. Same applies I guess for futaba' Vis-tan, but not on ++(Nijiura.com) 's Vistan-which is cool though. XP-tan's sweet manner can be also compared to Sonata's, although (no offense to others) it seems MacOS9 Sonata's personalities are almost of NT-san, ME-tan, 2k-tan and XP-tan's personalities combined. For me, XP-tan is definitely my favorite (and strangely I no longer complain about how much I dislike XP as an OS anymore), but 2k and Vista are second and third.

If my decision was based on OS, rather than girl, I would say 95-tan. But seeing as it's based on girl, it's kind of a tie between XP-tan and 3.1-tan. They're both equally cute, but I think I'd like XP-tan better if she had smaller breats. They're a tad too big at times for my tastes.
I associate myself more with Xp Professional-tan. Cute but not loaded down with silly sparkley things, carefree, buddies around with her sisters, and she is on the chubby side, like me!
I truly, truly wish more XP-tan pictures showed her with a cute pudge belleh. This may sound funny, but when I was having body issues seeing pictures of a chubby Xp-tan actually cheered me up, and helped me to be comfy in my own skin.

Win2k tan is too busty ;271 as smart, strong and she likes experiments(i tested rare dos apps with her), but i really love os9tan. She is small, friendly and beauty even with 16 colors(and she have boobs too!!!). also i can talk(really) with her via speech. That was a very clever keynote! I miss Mac OS 9. :( It was one of my favorite Mac OSes. Mac OS 8 was very good too and so was System 7 except for System 7.5 which I thought was terrible. I'd have to go with Vista U-tan. Something about her just seems comforting. (maybe it's the power of Vista. lol) I prefer Vista just over a XP OS. I did only use XP and never thought that Vista would be my next best friend. Now I have a few problems with XP (might be hardware issues) and my Vista runs faster than I could want her too.
No OS is perfect, its important to get the one that works best for you. BTW, which vesion of vista ultimate? the green haired one?
Now that I think about it.... There are still many different versions of Vista-tan. (plus there are the 3 versions as to home, business and ultimate)

I like Nanami because, she does not stand out too much, she's cute, efficient and very happy! I think it is the themepack that is doing that, but I ran three VM's at the same time on my tablet, and still held up. Very dependable and does things a lot better than Vista-tan on the same equipment. The only one that talks to you while use run "her".

That, however, requires you to be quite infected with the aforementioned zombie virus in the first place, which would make you a bearer and/or zombie, the first case in which you wouldn't be aware of it and thus more likely to spread it to your partner(s), and in the second case you'd be quite incapable of comprehending the concept of a "kiss" (and quite ugly to boot). Thus, unless your body is able to produce some sort of poison/acid to actually make it a weapon, the exchange of saliva as a weapon is completely REDUNDANT.
And grossly hard to use as a weapon in the first place, too, unless you're a strikingly gorgeous killer queen/gigolo with a license to kill and a master infiltrator etc, and your target is susceptible to your charms.

as for the linux -tans, i haven't heard enough about their respective personalities to make a proper judgement (i don't want to judge all of them on GNU, which is one end of the spectrum, or Ubuntu, which would be the other end :\).
To keep it to the minimum, I like Win2k-tan and Sonata the most.

As far as canon Windows-tans go, NT-tan's probably my favorite.
OSC-produced Windows-tans: probably 2.0-tan
Canon Mac-tans: Snow Leopard-tan
OSC produced Mac-tans: I have a soft spot for Aurora's System 7-tan.
tbh I love most of the OS-tans we've created here, I don't know if I could play favorites.

though i do have soft spots for 2k-tan, 98-tan, Homeko and 3.1-tan. and futaba's 1.0-tan, she's just so adorable. ^^
Hm, yes, 3.1-tan would be on my list too. As for -kuns, my favorite (Windows-kun) has always been 2K-kun.
2k-kun is badass, especially when you consider his interactions and daily life with all the other futaba characters. he actually has a continuing life and narrative beyond a series of pinups. ^^
95-tan is my favorite OS-tan. My other favorites tend to be during the same era, as it's my favorite computer era, but 95 is top because she's so damn headcanonable. Probably because the marketing for Windows 95 is a great source of inspiration.
As for favorite -kun, definitely ME-kun. Just because he's cute. Homeo is definitely a close second, however. I vastly prefer writing females by miles, so I tend to focus more on the -tans.

Amen, sister. Part of the reason I got into (and stayed in) the OS-tan fandom is the abundance of cool/kickass female characters. It's a weakness of mine. >>;; I agree with you on the 95-tan point. Homeo is best described by the canon as closeted trans. it has been shown on many occasions that he wishes for the female anatomy (having dreams about gaining tits, nearly killing himself by almost cutting off his penis) as well as feels more comfortable in "womens'" clothing and masquerading as a girl. there are actually some characters that think he IS a girl and don't know otherwise.
on the flipside, while she doesn't care NEARLY as much as he does, Homeko may have slight trans inklings as well. in one comic, when the two are mysteriously genderflipped, she is shown to be EXTREMELY excited and actually dashes to where Homeo is, saying that they can finally have a relationship. this is likely due to her extreme yaoi leanings and brother complex, but the point stands. usually she just doesn't care, though, living as a typical fujoshi (not caring about appearance, bra, diet, or how she presents herself to others).
also, my favourite -tan is all the -kuns.
ChiVistan is top tan on my list and has just knocked Saseko off the #1 spot . As an OS, I have no problem with either one, But because Saseko has been retired (unfortunately) ChiVistan takes that #1 spot. Not to also mention her grace and in performance and looks. Chivistan FTW! ;D
Saseko's only been retired if you want her to be. i still love XP. i prefer the other Vistans, but Chivistan is nice as well. pretty hair and all that.

My favorite OS-tan is (as said in my signature) Windows Me! :) I like her because her best because I like to challenge myself as a hobby to try to install and emulate Windows Me in the enhanced DOSBox SVN builds. Also, I find her colors almost match Fujifilm's old advertising blimp when in the sky, which I think can kind-of relate to Windows Me's newly-enhanced media features like movie-maker! ;D
if i recall, there are also a few ME-exclusive games out there, so i know there are a couple enthusiasts that still hang on to her.

I can probably say, of all OS-tans, which of them is my least favorite too now that I've been doing more reading in the wiki. The shy 13-year-old Secchan! I like Secchan, though I also wonder where her ideas on how to relate to men may have come from. If we think about all the possibilities of where, it could be her twisted reaction to Hacchan's futa side. Perhaps there was some kind of trauma early on that coloured her views. It could also be, under the same reasoning, a reaction to her brothers' relationship with each other. It has been shown in artwork that they're rathe gay for each other (I'd show examples but I'm posting from my phone), so under the same trauma idea maybe she walked in on them doin' it and got all freaked out.
Or maybe she's just a psycho, who knows.
Mm. I ignore that part of Secchan in my fanon. I focus more on the wrestler side of her, seen in Nijikaku.
Edit: For the record, to replace that, I have Secchan, out of sisterly love, interfere with Hacchan's relationships.

Sometimes I wonder if I made the right call about his gender, considering the whole Emacs as Operating System theory (http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?EmacsAsOperatingSystem). And the beauty and elegance with which LISP is regarded. Then again, this exists (http://bellacielo.deviantart.com/art/Autumn-311548638), so who knows really.
@Kari: TBH, I suppose this site feels like an oddity, in being anime related and not being mostly, if not entirely, yaoi. Maybe I'm showing my age here, but it felt like a vast majority of the Cardcaptor Sakura, Gundam Wing, etc. fansites I stumbled onto as a kid were heavily geared toward yaoi fangirls over casual fans like myself, which given I had mom monitoring my internet usage more heavily back then, made my life hell, as I had to be careful where I clicked lest I stumble onto unmarked yaoi :\
(Maybe that's changed in the past 15 years, but that's at least what I remember. Although, I will admit I have seen some yaoi I do like in recent years, so hey -w-)

For me it really depends on the characters in question — if I like a pair of characters and think they'd make a good couple I'll probably like shipping them without regard for gender. guys, you misinterepret me. i'm not anti-yuri, i'm pro-OS-kun. we're such a small fandom as it is, and all the OS-kuns barely get any spotlight, that i get excited when i see mention of them. 9 times out of 10 when you're searching for OS characters on other sites they're all cute girls. ;^;
i agree with more females in fiction and bells' "it depends on the characters for me to ship it". as for my own works, i'm always in the camp of "let the characters tell YOU how they act (corny and pretentious, but it works for me)". ergo, i can't determine the pairing of any given characters i write, as they've already determined it for me. :0
