SO I managed to contact another person who bought that GLaDOS ring I've been looking at and grill her about details, since I really wasn't sure what material to buy it in, how to detail it, etc.

She bought hers in stainless steel and recommends it since apparently the plastic options can be kinda fragile.

Although she also says that the finish on the stainless is pretty rough and requires sanding/polishing, which kind of worries me. She just used acrylic paint for the detail work but suggests using something more suited for metal since the paint on hers has chipped in places.

Also she confirmed that stainless rings run about a half-size small and advises buying a half-size up (as does the seller).

That's good to know. BTW, my record is supposed to ship out on Monday; the seller contacted me to say there was a slight delay because all their post office had was bubble mailers, and they wanted to make sure it was nicely packed in a box so it doesn't break in shipping

for the details, you're gonna want figure paint then, the kind made for metal D&D figurines. hobby shops and tabletop gaming stores will sell it, and usually in a nice, wide range of colours, too. i've considered picking some up to restore the lustre to my old One Piece necklace. :3

if the rough edges really are a problem, i can probably ask my dad for advice. if you have a rock tumbler available, that's what we always used in jewelry class to smooth the edges of the rings and such. :\

Yeah, that's the sort of paint I was planning on using. I think it may be sold at that antique store we visited in Laconia (they have a model train shop upstairs), if not I'll check Michael's or go online and buy it.

It's not so much rough edges I'm concerned about, it's the surface of the material. As you can see here, stainless steel products produced in the 3d printing process are rather pitted-looking. The person I talked to said she was able to spruce up the surface with simple sanding, but if the surface is too dinged-up I may just attempt to fill in the pits and paint over it.

As someone whose seen stainless steel printed stuff, the pitting didn't look that extreme to me.
