guys, i never promote stuff like this, but please sign this petition. fox news' latest outing has decided to take a dump on my religion simply because it's a little less than mainstream. we're not hurting anybody. and yet even 4-500 years after witch hysteria was in full swing, people are still humiliating witches in this country.

Yay! I worked with Ren'py years ago (making very small / simple VNs) and I didn't have any knowledge of Python at the time, but I imagine having a grasp on the language would make you a much more powerful Ren'py coder. ^^

@bella: I'd love to learn some python with you! I've been meaning to learn it for some time now and have only dipped my feet in a little with it so it would be great to learn along side someone! I could also get you going somewhat with Java if you'd like, but I would say to concentrate on python for the beginning. I've found that learning a programming language along side someone is better than by yourself so I'm completely willing to work with you! PM the info, I'm on skype most of the time as well unless its a school day because I'm stuck in class ;P

Awesome!  was thinking the same thing, when it comes to learning something new, two (or three, or four) minds are better than one - at the very least, it's good to have another person / more people around to point you in the right direction if you get in a jam or share resources with (websites, books, guides, etc). I'll PM you my Skype info, though I'd also like to make a thread here on OSC so we can keep track of any helpful websites and guides, and later on use it as a "headquarters" for projects.

At this point, I'm a complete noob to Python so I've been going over very basic beginner's guides and writing extremely simple programs, so I haven't needed any advice or pointers yet. But when I reach a point where I start dabbling in more complicated and original programs, it would be good to be able to have some help when I get stuck.

@choco: Working with renpy is pretty simple so after learning the basics of python you should be able to handle it

On the topic of Python as a programming language though, its a nice little programming language that is strong but can be very limited on how you can deploy it into an environment. I say that after we are able to get comfy with python we move onto working with more deploy able languages such as C# or Java. Even HTML 5 is more deploy able than python because its able to work on almost ALL platforms, this goes along with C# and Java in most cases.

I agree with you, though as Kari said I'm going to try to focus my energy on Python for the time being and see how that goes.  

I worked with python during a summer internship back in 2009. I'm now working with someone on a Python Touhou SRPG.
It's a joy to work with, IMO. Having worked with C/C++/C#/Java, I love how readable Python is. But knowing others who swear by C/C++, they find python a bit unsettling at times. haha (for example, the use of whitespace)

That's great to hear! I decided to give Python a shot since it's often described as both beginner-friendly AND reasonably practical/useful ... I've barely started working with it, but already I'm finding it far more interesting and easy to follow than the other languages I've dabbled with in the past.

Python is probably much easier than C++; which I have a few books on (Courtesy of my uncle; who had some leftover from when he was in college). Also, likely more useful than BASIC ^^;

I'm currently using tae kim's guide to japanese: http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/
It's a good start point and supplement to any Japanese course, I think.

Also, nitpick: it's rōmaji, not romanji. Rome = ローマ(rōma), characters are 字(ji) (as in kanji) hence, rōmaji = ローマ字.
And I must mention, learning in romaji often leads to really bad habits, so I HIGHLY recommend that you learn the hiragana/kanji writing system from the start.

learning romaji is just learning japanese anyway, since it's just spelling the words out in english letters, like sa-ku-ra.....

the video guide i gave you teaches you sentence pattern which is honestly a better way to start than learning just the phrases. think of it this way: if you learn the structure, you can form your own sentences, rather than relying on a stock set of phrases every time. it also means that if you start picking up new words you can easily put them into those sentences instead of wondering what to do with them. for example...

Haihai! Hikari desu, yoroshiku! Atashi wa Ni-juu-ichi desu, soshite otanjoubi no sangatsu juu desu. atashi wa suki ga Hanafuda desu. o namae wa? :3

Yosh! Hikari desu, yoroshiku! Ore wa onnanoko desu, fufu. ni-juu-ichi desu. ore wa otanjoubi no sangatsu juu desu. ore wa suki ga kuro desu. -w-

(i probably butchered that but i'm getting better. also, i feel like the second one suits me better, lol, despite "ore" being a masculine personal pronoun. ^^; )


so i finally got my teeth fixed, they look a lot better now. i really need to start taking the dentist's advice, though, he said i wasn't too far away from a root canal. and given that this was my two front teeth, that would have sucked ass. i've been avoiding it for so long, but it's time to start using straws....at least it wasn't worse, since it could have been. but the price they quoted us was about $300 under what it actually was, so we were both thrown for a loop there. +___+;;

my mother's had one or two, and from my understanding, it's just shy of getting the tooth pulled. i think it involves drilling all the way to the root to correct a problem. you need a cap after you've had one done. it takes a couple hours, costs around a thousand dollars, and is rather difficult, for both dentist and patient. it could always be worse, but the only alternative to a root canal is tooth extraction, so i think that says it all....

@leaf: np man, just giving you a heads up that it's easier in the long run. as for the price, we're gonna pay it over time, and i've been waiting to get this done for months, so i'm glad to just be off the hook for awhile. ^^;;;
also, cool on the pillow fight. sounds fun. xD
