we're watching a movie she brought over that she wanted me to see, Summer Wars. i can see why.

IMHO Summer Wars is an anime greatly overestimated. The story lacks in many points.

This is why I never, ever, ever buy into hype. For some it's hard, but I find it to be an easy thing to do.
Summer Wars was enjoyable for what is. Story reminded me of Digimon, but animation was nice.

Also, it must be known, that I would make a horrible critic. I'm the kinda guy that likes 99% of the media I consume. lol

@bella: sorry bout' your problems, man. had the same problem earlier, only mum was quite sympathetic, despite the fact that i brought the carsickness on myself from playing video games in the car. >>;

@sleepyd: thanks for the links!! i really want to learn how to play those, but i didn't know where to start. a flash game is perfect for me! ^^
also, you went to public school, right? i was thinking of proposing Accel World to my high school's anime club (since you missed it, i'm their mascot; i graduated 3 years ago but i kinda just never left, and became the mascot last year), but i need to know about appropriateness. :\

@raffele, sleepyd: Summer Wars was by the same animation studio and director that made Our War Game, the second Digimon movie. the director had some ideas he wanted to use for Our War Game but didn't get to, so he made Summer Wars to complete those ideas.
everyone is entitled to their opinion, but i loved it. of course, i love Madhouse Studios, Digimon, and stories involving going into the internet anyway, so that's likely part of it. but i thought the plot was good, too.  (you can't expect the world when it's a movie. if Summer Wars was a 24-ep series, it would have had more breathing room. but as a self-contained movie, the plot was perfect. and the exclamations? perfect. KOIKOI!!)

You got carsick from playing video games in the car? I'm glad I don't have that problem; the only major issue is that it's often hard to see the screen on my DS or PSP if it's too sunny outside ^_^;
When I break out my Game Boy Color, it's a different story entirely -w-

Chocofreak13

i can't do anything in the car involving reading or even looking/concentrating downward. so no reading, video games, sewing, drawing, writing, etc. :\

I almost always get a headache when trying to do anything in the car.  Granted, doing almost anything gives me a headache.

My brother heads off to college for the first time tomorrow, and I go back for my senior year Sunday.

I can barely manage like 10 or so minutes of handheld gameplay before I get too nauseous to continue. I'm pretty sure it's the same reason that causes seasickness. I see a non-moving, still environment, and brain feels that the body is moving. Brain is confused. Brain makes you want to hurl.

The AI for the mahjong game makes it hard to win with big hands. Avoid the temptation to riichi, the AI will just go straight defensive when you do that, and it's hard to win. But the way it plays forces you to learn the basic strategies to building your hand.

Actually, I went to a private school. haha All-boys, Catholic.
As far as appropriateness goes, there are occasional fanservice moments. I'm not sure about the social standards at your school though. Mine was fairly liberal about stuff like that, I know they wouldn't care (much) about it at all. Bikinis, shower scenes... but nothing with crazy jiggle physics or anything nuts like that. There is some light loli fanservice(?). I personally wouldn't even call it fanservice, but it could be objectionable to sensitive people.

@sleepyd: lol, religion. xD you're still in the public school bracket compared to some of the people here. i was surprised to learn we have two homeschoolers here. :0
thanks for the info. i'll try to review the series a bit more, but if i can't make it in time i'll let the club know to take the series with a grain of salt.
and thanks for the tips. though idc about winning, it's more about learning. ^^

@stew: i have a tendency to wake up with a headache. though whether or not it sticks depends on the day, tbh. :\
also, congrats to your brother and to you (you're a senior already, wow. :0 ). perhaps when routine is established, you'd be willing to come back to the game? :3

@pent: actually, not really. really lets me get an appriciation for music. ^^

Yeah, I mean, I've got to have my brother move in tomorrow but if I can get off my ass to get a character sheet ready by next Saturday I'll be back in.

seriously? kickass. now i just need to get myself together. xD

if you need any help with forming a new character sheet, just ask. you need permission to use non-book races, just so you know. ^^

EDIT: hey guys, found this and found it funny. but i wish there was more to the article. it's rather short. :\

Lol, well I guess, "educated by an institution" works. Certainly some differences between public and private schooling. And there's nothing inherently bad about religion, but man do some of the other denominations make me facepalm.
Accel World, overall, I think can be a good gateway anime, so I personally don't have objections showing it to casual fans.

And wouldn't learning to play entail learning to win? XD; Well, anyhoo, when starting out, avoid calling (PON! CHI! KAN!) until you have a better idea of what you're doing. But if you learn through your mistakes, by all means, call. :3

first i need to memorize the terms. it's all so complicated, and they don't seem to give much in the way of a tutorial... ;^;

For mahjong?
It's a little wordy, but I recommend this: http://www.osamuko.com/complete-beginners-guide-to-online-mahjong-part-1-how-to-play/

If you have a couple hours to spare, and you're willing to go through a long, long video tutorial, there's this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mh0brmqq4sk
(he has a table of contents in the video description so you can skip around if you want to)
I found this well after I learned to play, but having a video with graphics makes it easier to understand, imo.
