Is it double post worthy to say that Prinzessin is in St. Jobs Memorial awaiting a System 7 transfer tomorrow morning and that I walked off with a Kaypro 2X.

Bella

LUCKY BASTARD? OR THE LUCKIEST BASTARD?

Red-Machine

A Kaypro?

Yep, and now I have a real one that needs $22 worth of software, a possible A: drive replacement, and a power cord.  All in all: HELL YEAH.

To continue, today was when the truck was supposed to come pick up all the stuff people dropped off for the school tech department to recycle.  As a good old computer nerd, I set off to look in the drop off boxes for something old enough that the tech guys wouldn't come at me for security violations.  Going to math class I stopped at the science center's drop off point.  Nothin' interesting, a few old 3rd party PC towers and a Packard-Bell that looked like it'd seen the worse part of a Chem lab.  Entering the actual building I stopped dead.  Angels sang.  Trumpets sounded.

AN APPLE FUCKING ][ PLUS WITH DISK DRIVE, PADDLE, AND POWER CORDS.

Instead of falling to my knees in Thanksgiving, I went to math class and spent the entire time trying not to hyperventilate.  After class I'd been planning to go see about Prinzessin anyway (her HD's probably not dead but the genius who owned her installed a way newer version of System 7 then we could get a hold of before the weekend) so I asked the tech guy about it.  He said it was a refugee from the Biology Department and that it probably didn't work.  Even though the truck that was supposed to come wasn't until Tuesday he still had to go round up the computers sitting around campus with HD's for safety so he left.

I promptly returned to the ][ shrine and hooked her up to test her out.  There seems to be a fault in the Disk II drive, but there seems to be no problem with the physical computer or the disk card.  Naturally, the tech guy shows up.  Amazed that it works he offers to go find the System 7 disks I need (see above).  Also learned our school had VAX for a time, as well as they never owned a brand name computer from when they ditched the SEs and IBM RTs in the mid-90's to the Dell buy in in 2004.  Being the helpful person I am, I volunteered to help go round up the various computers.

Let me just say that this is probably THE BEST WAY EVER TO FIND OLD COMPUTERS.  I saw a half dozen Performa models, dozens of other third party PCs, an old G3 tower, an eMac, a mystery computer with two 8in floppies, a HUGE DOS box, and the heartbreaker of the day: a badly damaged Amiga A500.

TL; DR: I have an Apple ][ Plus now and need software plus a new Disk II.

Way to fukken dredge up my repressed pain over MISSING MY COMMUNITY OLD COMPUTER DRIVE. I was in fukken Vermont at the time and missed out on boxloads of old machines that instead ended up in the dump (or so one of my repair tech contacts says). ><

stew, I wish I was you right now.
