Aidan?  Well, I am an Irishman after all...

Well, it's not all a bed of roses, I've been this way since my early teens - during my religious years I managed to repress it, but the valve busted and now here I am.  So it's my theory that I am the way I am because I working through those years of repression, and while it manages to keep things interesting it also keeps me in a state of mind that makes me functionally useless for hours at a time (it's a little like ADD).

Not to make it better or anything, but personally I believe religion is an adolescence thing for the human society. And hey, we've been around for a few millennia now, isn't it time to cut some slack on the praying and ditch the old corpse by the wayside already? I mean, seriously.

Well, I'm an Irish-American so Catholicism isn't my bag - I was raised Protestant.  I'm now pretty decidedly areligious, but I think it's important to keep in mind that such may not be the case for the other members of this forum.  I hope I'm not being a buzzkill, I just understand how such topics can harm the civility of public discussion.

I personaly am an NO PREF  at least thats what my dog tags said.   Even athiesum has become a religion.  They have a icon, they write books about how much they dont belive, have groups where they sit around and talk about how much they dont belive, even try to convert people to nonbeliving.  Just as bad as all the other religious nutjobs if you ask me

Sadly, I have to agree with this.  I was actually a member of an atheist/agnostic group in college, and this pretty much hits the nail on the head.  While I didn't mind having an opportunity to publicly discuss things without the fear of someone saying "God doesn't like that", there were often times I felt the group was coasting into this "anti-religious" zone - which to me, kind of defeated the purpose of such a group.  The hypocrisy of those that would "follow" Richard Dawkins and still deign to mock the "religious" appalled me.  It's not that I disagree with the concept of atheism at all, but in America, it's become too closely associated with the rank-n-file that preach the Gospel according to Dick.  In any case, I have been known to mock religion and religious ideas, but that's largely because of my background - I mock ideas that I've left behind.  Still that doesn't mean I think this would be a better world without religion, I just think it's important that people learn to stop taking everything so damn seriously and learn to tolerate the things they feel they can't accept.  In the grand scheme of things I think each of us has some sort of religion - even if it's not in the traditional sense.  For some it may be going to church every Sunday, but for others it's politics or football or video games or in some cases, yes, even porn.  >///<

And what can I say, moderation is best for all things, to avoid extremism. Extremism in all cases are bad, because that makes you unable to accept changes to the cornerstones of your view of the world. That is what makes science - it is always changing and always dynamic.

So if anything, I'm a science man, but you probably knew that already, right? -w-
