Good thing that both of those were already in my plans. However the online shopping part was for after if I move out. As was (for the most part) fixing up Niney. xD

My goal is to move out ASAP because my parents and my brother invade my privacy on a regular business, and they say they have a right to. I very strongly disagree. If I get packages in the mail for me, they'll assume it's the internet, and they'll go through my browsing history, and discover I gave someone my address here and boom. Banned from this website until I move out.

Nichi

Wow; even my mom isn't that crazy .___.;
Hope you manage to get out quickly, at least; I intended to be out on my own by the time I turned 20, but here I am at 23 and that's yet to happen.

So, first day went fairly well; next few days are just online training. Seems like it might be alright :3

I plan to move out by 22 at the earliest (that's when I expect to graduate from college), and 30 at the latest. But I hope to leave as soon as I can, so it could even be earlier than 22 if these next two years go really smoothly.

Glad to hear that. :D

EDIT: tornado warning here. So much for Homeko and Niney being fixed up.

Pitkin

Great to hear the start at your new job went better than expected, Pentium! ^^

winduko and Pent, it feels quite exotic when I read your talk about leaving your parents' place. In Finland it's very common that children (myself included) leave their parents already at the age of 18, in order to study in another town and to avoid any patricide. On the other hand, I can imagine that renting a flat might be more expensive in the States or that the culture is simply different. Anyway, good luck to both of you in your plans!

Cockleshell

it's prohibitively expensive in most places in the US for an 18 year old nowadays to simply disconnect and leave home. often, they are sheltered as well, which necessitates college as a buffer period between parental assistance and supervision and being a functioning self-supporting adult. such is the way of 'Murica
What's in your hand, back at me. I have it, it's an oyster with two figures of your favorite Touhou characters. Look again, the figures are now vials of the Hourai Elixir. Anything is possible when your waifu smells like Old World and not a man. I'm a frog.

winduko

Yeah, from what I can observe, Cockle here is correct. I am very sheltered, so there is no way I could be a functioning self-supporting adult right out at 18, as much as I want to be.

Also, the tornado missed us, but it's hitting other parts of the town I live in. At least Homeko and (if she's here) Niney are safe. However, it's heading towards the part of Indy where my mom works.

Nichi

@Duko: Hope everything is alright with the tornado :[

@Cockle: Indeed. Although I was sheltered, mom did make sure my sister and I both knew how to cook and clean around the house; which did help greatly. Thanks to this, spending most of my high school years home alone was actually quite nice; I could easily do most anything I wanted to (In fact, I remember one afternoon years back, juggling cleaning the bathroom and watching a Code Lyoko marathon). Since we were still on dial-up at that time, I wasn't allowed to get online when nobody was home, in case they needed to contact me, although that changed once I had a cell phone (Not like it stopped me before then; I had a tradition of logging onto Phantasy Star Online after I finished my schoolwork >w>; ). So, I can handle functioning on my own so long as I have the income needed to support myself.

@Pit: At least in the corner of the country I'm in, everybody expects you to either move out of your parents' house or go straight to college right out of high school (If you take the latter, generally the prospect of still living with your parents is acceptable if dorms aren't available). I wouldn't mind going to college, truth be told, but for now getting out of my parents' house is of the highest priority; it's frustrating having to hide so much about myself to avoid any potential issues out of mom ;_;

On a different note entirely, my replacement Aperture Science mug finally arrived, in one piece this time >:3

@Pit: in my circle of acquaintances most of the under-25s are with either living away from home at college (dorms), living away from home in the military (barracks, I guess) or living with parents and working. Very few live with their mates and rent homes. None I know actually own a home. Oddly I know people in England, Canada, the U.S. and Philippines who are in situations where they must live at home due to economics... maybe Europe is better but it seems like living with family is the norm in the Anglosphere (can't speak for Philippines because I don't know enough about the culture there).

Chocofreak13

@pit: i get this chat from my dad QUITE a bit, but that was because he was born and raised in Europe (in the 60's and 70's).

for starters, the access to jobs and amount of jobs is much different than in europe. due to an intense focus on public transportation there people have access to jobs as far away as another city or even country. there's no issue with getting one when you can just hop on a train and be in sweden or russia in an hour or two. tack on the lack of affordable housing, the need to have SOME kind of degree to get a good-earning job these days (mostly) and that most parents aren't ready for their kids to leave at 18, and you have the culture we're in. i have a few friends who live in dorms, but even those are EXTREMELY cost prohibitive (and dirty, noisy, cramped, and often there aren't enough of them), but for the most part my friends who DO live on their own are over 25 or homeless. however, my sister is going to be 27 this year and alex is about 28 or 29, and they live in an apartment due to cost constraints (they currently have 4 people living there, none of them have jobs, and they're barely afloat).

TL;DR: there is a WIDE gap between europe and america in the "when to move out" regard, mostly due to economic strain. also, having a job doesn't guarentee an apartment, and having an apartment doesn't guarentee a job. (also, being 30-ish doesn't guarentee a house.)

tbh i'd sell my soul and then some (and then kill a guy, maybe several) to move out. but i'm a college dropout with no job, no hope, and no future. i hate living where i do, but the only other option right now is to live in my car, and if i left all my stuff would get thrown away. and i spent a lot of time acquiring this stuff. >:\

i'm hoping that, once we start seeing a counselor, i can get put on some kind of anti-depressant. i get the feeling that would boost my confidence, improve my memory and just break me out of this funk i've been wallowing in for 15 years. i'm sick of being anxious about every aspect of life, forgetting half the things i hear in a given day and feeling as aimless and trapped as i do.

@kodomo: yeeeesh. what the hell kind of justification could they have to be so invasive? have you mentioned to them that it's a felony to open other peoples' mail?
also, thanks. now if only i could actually, y'know, MAKE the comics. -w-;;

@pent: WHOO~

@bells: what you're seeing is Michigan. Ohio is nothing but terrible.
also, Agoraphobia is what you're describing.

@Kari: The closest thing to reasoning is that I downloaded malware often as a kid, so they assume I'm stupid when it comes to the internet. Other than that, no reason other than being overprotective. They once banned me from my computer because I joined a guild on Neopets without their permission before any incidents with malware, may I add. Didn't stop me from giving very personal info to one person though (I've known her for almost a year at the time, and I consider her my best friend).

I think they've loosened up a bit (considering my friend was, for a while, the only one I could truly consider a friend) but I fear they'll tighten back up if I get stuff from people on the internet.

And I seriously doubt they'd care. They'd assume that, because I'm under 18, they can open up my mail.

The more I think about it, the more I should seriously consider getting into ebay and amazon.

@Pent: No worries, the tornado missed us completely, and we're perfectly okay.

Cockleshell

My parents are the same way, they open my mail because I'm under 18. I don't want to cause a massive stink. All they've found is some shirts my girlfriend sent me and a pre-emptively written "polite" graduation card that my GF and I planned out, because I had this nagging suspicion that my father would get to the package before I did. It made the package come off as a large graduation gift from a good friend, instead of a love present from an awesome girlfriend.

@Cockle: If only I could like posts here like I can on tumblr, as that post is something I'd like.

@Cockle: Genius :3

@Duko: That's good, as far as weather
On the subject of the computer, my mom tightly monitored everything I did when I was younger. I remember her raising a huge fuss over me signing up for Lego.com ages ago without asking, and worst of all was when she caught me posting on GameFAQs when I was about 14 or so; apparently, me talking about the specs of my computer is the equivalent of telling them "I live at [address]; come kill me" in her eyes, so she put tighter restrictions on me for a while after (Although I just found clever ways around it; I'd keep a Notepad file open when I'm browsing, and type my posts in there instead of the actual message box, making it look like I'm merely taking notes on a game I'm playing).
Even when I was nearly 21, I still had issues with her; she didn't care as much that I posted on message boards, but she took issue over me wanting to fly up north to meet Kari; mom assumed she was underage and I'd be confronted by Chris Hanson with Dateline NBC over the entire thing, or I'd be murdered. Thankfully, dad was at least reasonable, and was able to convince her to let me go; which was probably the only good bit of that year besides the release of Skyfall :\

@Kari: I hope something works out soon :[

I broke my family's computer when I was 10 by downloading an emulator for Pokémon Gold or something. All that happened was that we had to reformat the thing...based bureaucrats parents.
