Only if you're as balance-challenged and fresh to the slopes as I am (I haven't been out since spring '10). ;^;

Out of personal curiosity, what ski area are you visiting this weekend?

I always wanted to try snowboarding in real life, since I loved Snowboard Kids and 1080° Snowboarding on N64.

Maybe once I move up there, we can meet up and I can attempt to snowboard :3

It's difficult to pick up but once you learn the basics it tends to come easily, sort of like riding a bike. I'd recommend shelling out the money for lessons - in my experience it's pretty much impossible to teach yourself how to snowboard or figure it out by observing others and it's extremely helpful to have a knowledgeable person to explain how things work.
Wa-wa-wa-wachusett. Heading up with my roomies and some bros.

I recommend you not to try breaking my speed record - it's not good for your health. ^^;
YOU COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS

i failed at skiing when i was in the ski club in 5th grade. dumbass instructor wouldn't let me use my poles. to someone as balance-challenged as i am (read: CANNOT RIDE A DAMN BIKE), those poles are the difference between enjoying myself and spraining my damn ankle and spending the next 20 minutes lying in the snow. ><;;
i did alright on cross-country skiing, though. that was nice.

@bella: if it's impossible to self-teach snowboarding, HOW DID THE FIRST SNOWBOARDERS LEARN

@pizza: i used to see ads for that place all the time. xD

They learned very, very carefully -w-

Part of me thinks I might be able to figure out the basics on my own, but snowboarding lessons could always help

Chocofreak13

you're from a place that barely has snow. i'd go for the lessons if i were you. :\

Well, what I mean is that I have a pretty good sense of balance, so I could probably figure out the basics pretty quickly. Lessons will definitely help, but I don't think I'll struggle too much and will get the hang of it pretty quickly

Not like if I tried ice skating. That I'll just injure myself >_<;;

Bella

@Kari: That's quite the philosophical question there. @__@

@Pent: Seconding Kari here, balance is helpful but it still takes instruction to learn how to ride a snowboard ... it's kind of hard to explain, but it relies mostly on manipulating your center of balance in conjunction with certain ankle/foot movements. To make the whole thing more challenging, it's impossible to learn to snowboard without being able to move with some speed first - I think the hardest part of learning was getting over the initial fear of going "fast" (well,it was fast to me at the time) in order to have some control over the board. In that respect, it really does remind me of learning to ride a bike....

Nichi

I felt it was something like that; kind of like skateboarding downhill with the board strapped to your feet. I do agree that lessons would be helpful, but I don't think it'll be as difficult as, for example, training me to ice skate. I can't even manage roller blades last time I tried those >_<;;

Chocofreak13

i'm just saying, don't underestimate it. but i can't do anything involving feet and wheels or feet and slippery surfaces. so maybe it's just me. :\

And now my connection seems to be running normally...

Also, like a ripple through a pond, last week's attempt to learn Emacs has continued to disrupt my free time ... somehow all that reading about Emacs led me to more reading, about LISP, and then I clicked some link somewhere and ended up browsing through a comic that uses an adventure game as a way teaching the basics of Lisp. I couldn't get my Common Lisp compiler to work and I didn't have the right version of Emacs to use the EmacsLisp tutorial, but the Clojure version worked fine! It was fun and it's made me want to learn more about Lisp, even though I kind of hate programming. >>
