Quote...I thought you'd be a little happier that the Everex lappy were a mini... and cheap at that. ^^;

But don't let your guard down,... this is BIG news, and you can bet our good friends at Redmond will scratch, claw and spit to get at a piece of the action... ASAP. ^___^

I dunno, maybe it comes from the fact that while I kinda dislike desktops and prefer laptops, I don't need a ton of mobility for mine. K8 hardly ever ventures from her desk....

As for M$, didn't they already try that with the Origami?

Like Senpai said, there's way too much politics involved in this to hope. I hoped for a long time (and still do, to some extent) but IBM drags their feet, so to speak. I think I pretty much gave up all logical hope when they withdrew support and whatnot. The whole thing is a big mess, I don't think even they know what all is going on. As far as I can tell, they don't have any PR people for it, and almost all the original developers are long gone. It's a tangled web, and one that I don't think will be undone, sadly. Ah, well. Guess I'll have to live with my old beta CD. ^.^

*sigh*

That's the terrible thing about the computer business (or just business in general), that a lot of good OSs get passed up for lesser ones because of more marketability, cheaper prices, etc. etc. And you probably know which OS I'm talking about : |

But I think that applies almost exclusively to proprietary ones...this is probably another reason why I like Linux and other open-source OSs...

QuoteCan I be a member as well?

See: Nejin's reply ;)

But yeah, you could be the Head Open Sourceress!

QuoteI sure hate Windows Vista for being bloated, DRM-ridden, unfree, buggy, activation-requiring and cycles-wasting! And 98 for similar reasons (but even more because I have to use it sometimes)!

Me too : /

But aside from that, I have no complaints :P

QuoteI'll let you in on a secret, Tux-dono.

YOU ARE ALREADY A MEMBER .W.

LOL to the MAX! XD

Wow!  I haven't seen you in forever.  Â¯v¯
So many Linux-tans and BSD-tans have been drawn since you last visited, that you'd think this were another forum....  Â¯.¯

Sure you can be a member, but post nicely.  ^___^
M$ has been doing great at inadvertently bashing itself, so all we really need to do to tip the tide in our favor is extoll the virtues of non-Vista systems.  ^v^

For example,... a coworker of mine was thiiiiiiiiiiis close to purchasing a high-priced Dell Laptop (w/Vista of course) to give to his daughter who's WAY too young to even carry the thing.  But after I lent him my Asus EeePC so that he and his daughter could use it for the night,... well,...

Suffice to say, they were so imperssed, he not only ordered one, but TWO in fact (for someone else?) -- AND he still had plenty of money left over for many more gifts!!!  ^V^

BWAHAHA!!!  ^v^
For sure they've been around,... heck, you can even make the case that PocketPCs (with CE-chan) are true ultra-mobiles (although they're far from full-fledged OSes).

But ever checked the price on any of those?  `v'

When I bought my Eee-chan, she was surrounded by big laptops, as well as miniature 10-inch laptops and 7-inch internet tablets close to her size.  But Eee-chan was probably the only one with a 3-figure price.  ^___^;

In any event, have some more news from the OS/2 front!!

First,... and aptly-named article:

http://www.informationweek.com/blog/main/archives/2007/12/hey_ibm_set_os2.html

But more importantly,... there's also mention of this at the eComStation site as well:

http://www.ecomstation.com/

Among the many commercial beneficiaries of an open-sourced OS/2, these guys should rank high up there too.  ^^
Heck... just the fact that it took them 2 years to release candidate 3 of version 2.0 speaks volumes of proprietary inefficiency.  ^.^

Oh yes, free Amiga, world peace, all that jazz...

I think we should be thankful for what we've got. Open source Multics.

If only more people had mainframes to spare :P

First,... and aptly-named article:

Hmmmm...I had a thought....I wonder if IBM wants to keep OS/2 down cause an open sourced version could take too much business away from Linux, which they support a helluva lot more....?

And as a funny little story, yesterday I saw a new Mac ad. Where they were saying the fastest machine Vista ran on was a Apple computer.

After watching that, I felt all dirty O_____O

Heh! Well, then I guess you won't be disappointed by the piece of news I've got. THIS is good things for the old lady, if anything!

^ Such self-promoting!

Good for Asus! Even if I am a bit attached to my huge, 7-pound desktop replacing laptops :P
This could do wonders for bringing Linux to the "(niche) mainstream", perhaps sort of like Apple did for Unix with OS X.

C-Chan

Fufu... speaking of which.....

Here's another story that's been circling around lately regarding the OLPC....

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071224/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/one_laptop_one_village

As you know, I'm less enthused about this project; however, it does at least point out the merit of efficient computing when there is no infrastructure in place.  Kind of how some developing countries which could not afford to lay hundred of miles of telephone and cable lines, simply jumped straight to wireless technology.

A previous article I posted about Macedonia made mention of highly cost-efficient server+thin client setups to meet educational needs which not only seemed cheaper (en masse) and easier to get off the ground, but also put more power into local management.  Course, cost-efficiency and self-sufficiency are in some instances inadequate when addressing a lack of power infrastructure and socio-political instability.

(The OLPC at least addresses the former thing with that manual pull crank, but as they're still not very clear about its so-called anti-theft protection I can't say there's much of a grasp on the latter. )

C-Chan

Wow....
Not 100% Vista-related, but certainly sounds like a forced-upgrade scheme.....  ^^;

http://blog.wired.com/monkeybites/2008/01/microsoft-offic.html
http://www.consortiuminfo.org/standardsblog/article.php?story=20080103134307872

Also, I'm not even sure if I want to call this a competitor to the EeePC cause,... honestly,... it just don't look it.....  But oh well, let's keep piling them on.... ^^

/me fixes this incompatibility! With OpenOffice!

(I think my parents will not upgrade their Stoneage MS Office anymore... they have too many old files... I think some of their .docs are still Word 5.0 or Word for Windows 2.0)

To quote from Nejin,... "MOAR" Pink!!!!!!!!  ^v^

In other news, I was recently thinking about all the UMPC devices that promise to also include versions compatible with Windows XP (even the lowly OLPC), and wondered why on earth they keep pushing XP-tan around like cattle when they've already vowed to discontinue sales of her this year.  It's almost like saying they'll supply copies of Windows 98 for use on the OLPC, which would actually work better with the lower specs, but runs completely counter to their policy.  They would neither sell it to you, and even if they did they wouldn't support it.

Which brings me to things like this which, despite the fact that it doesn't work, at least highlights the fact that there are a lot more "Bellas" out there:

I'm unsure about the whole, pink hair thing, but as for OpenOffice...I dunno. Laziness mostly, I rarely use Word...

It's sickening what they're doing with XP (though the same could likely be said for 2k as well) : |

I mean, I've been running XP for 4 years, I've had one BSOD (back in the fall of 05'), but it did an automatic system restore to an early state and I haven't had one incident yet. It's caught two viruses (winter 05'), back when I was using IE 6. After taking more precautions, I haven't gotten one since. I'm considering buying an XP installation disk or whatever, in case I want to run/install XP when I inevitably get a new computer ;)

As for 98 on OLPC....ehmmmm....I'm sure the world is aware of my thoughts on non-NT Windows (IE, a trainwreck!)
