Aa sou sou,... almost forgot about the AMD Geode, but that definitely isn't really the same thing.  Or at least I've always viewed it as a power-saving processor rather than one for modern MIDs.  '__'

Admittedly, AMD has gotten its act together rather quickly with regards to FOSS -- so much so that my old ATI Radeon card no longer gives me any trouble with their drivers.  For that, I'll cheer them on in their pursuit for an Atom/Isiah competitor.  ^___^

QuoteSorry, I'm afraid I'd never be able to get used to such a small screen/keyboard

BAAH!  Same old excuse that never really holds water after about a week of usage, especially with the Aspire One which has a 95%-sized keyboard.  ;)

Then again, it is Acer so perhaps understandably you're hesitant about the brand.  ^__^

In that case, here's another potential baby en route:

QuoteWhoa, I wonder when Apple is going to implement some sort of instant-start technology...

Their current desktops already boot rather quickly, so not sure if they have the same incentive to research in that particular area.  Laptops are a different story, but they're not terribly bad compared to how they were in the older models.  ^^'

In other news, UNIX-sama has forced yet ANOTHER one of her sniveling little offspring to cooperate with the Linux-tans.  ^^

Meh, my computers run on AMD processors. So three cheers for AMD!

I like big comps and cannot lie, you other users can't deny, that when a comp comes in with an nice wide case and a big screen in your face...

Brrr, I can't believe I just referenced Sir Mixalot's booty song in a post O__o

Heyhey, that's not just any Unix...that's Tru64 Unix. That was a DEC OS....

QuoteI'm not as hesitant about Acer as I am about Dell...

Well true that,... Dell has its own secret reputation of the adverse kind.  ^^'

Okay then, stick with the beloved Acer that you'll adore and cherish anyway cause the C-chan says so.  ^.^

I actually saw the Symbian thing a few days ago, on ComputerWorld (i think). Yay for Finland! ^_^

Also. eAR OS "free edition"? Pirate nose smells bad stuff here >_> Is this thing legit!?
YOU COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS

C-Chan

Not in the US it is, but Denmark is fair game. Basically, it can be distributed to any country that doesn't criminalize the free distribution of DVD and MP3 playback codecs.

Besides, the free edition just means it's not the for-sale version, which is $100USD, and includes a lot of their proprietary multimedia software, as well as performance enhancements.

NejinOniwa

Wait...free codec distros are illegal in the US?

Wtf...?

I'm sure there are better sources, but this helps explain everything in a nice, convenient (albeit long) nutshell:

Errr...

Nopes, I don't get it. But 'sokay. As you all know by now, I care about software patent-related laws as much as the average person cares about the precise coordinates of Alpha Centauri, so I'll just spare myself the bother.

In other news, Microsoft Silverlight is OH LAWD, PATHETIC. I have the latest version installed, and when I browse around M$' website and come upon places where my Silverlight plugin can come to use, IT ASKS ME TO INSTALL SILVERLIGHT. Please, do it right, if you're gonna do something at all. *facepalm.jpg*

Awww man, that's just gonna get the creative juices fired up all over again.

And I was at a loss for ideas about Tru64-tan's design...I still dunno what she'd be like back at DEC, but at least we know in the modern day she's a friend of Linux-sama's ;)

I drew some ideas for a SymbianOS-tan not a few days ago. SymbianOS, BTW, is the daughter of EPOC (which I drew a -tan of as well).

QuoteAlso, I know what I'm trying out next... ^.^

Ack, looks good and all...but I'm one of those old fashioned types who thinks a TV should be a TV, a radio a radio, and a computer a computer (with a command line interface) :P

Hmmm, I was asked to install Silverlight for some web application a while back...suffice to say I went no further -__-

In other news, I gave Syllable OS a try. Meh. It was retarded under VirtualBox, so I burned a CD with Syllable on it, and ran K8 on the live CD.

I think it combined all the difficulty of Unix with non of the usefulness of Amiga. Damned fast, though, it booted in a few seconds O__O

Kami-Tux

I thought it was neat even though it did boot on my crappy computer (not the craptop, the other stationary crappy one) slowly from live-CD.

In other news: OMG, I really love this site for having users in them who know this kind of stuff!

In other news: Kami-tux, do you have a single non-crappy computer? And how many crappy ones do you have, anyway? >_>

I think it can be bluntly put as "decoding CSS requires a royalty to be paid, so a free decoder is either given as part of a commercial product (such as the built-in decoder in Mac OS X or Linspire for example - I don't remember if Windows Vista has one now, but as in Windows XP it still lacks one) or illegal in the US because it's obtained through reverse engineering"

NejinOniwa

Puts a bit more light on it. Kthx.

According to a new study, Massachusetts--my state's fraternal twin--is the most tech-savvy in the country:

http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/hughes/32599

(Don't mind that it's a link to a Yahoo news article. I hear that M$ has given up on hostility-taking them over, so I'm cool with them now :P)

But it gets better; New Hampshire is in the top ten, coming in at #9! Could this be why there are so many Macs in NH and MA? And so many people who know about Linux and open source software...?
