Aurora Borealis

I noticed a blaring error in that article: when it said that 33 MHz was the equivalent of the Intel 386 a decade ago.

1. Processors were much faster than that 10 years ago! (processor speeds of 200-400 MHz)

2a. The Pentium processor (Pentium II or III) was the current one from Intel 10 years ago

2b. The 386 was current about 20 years ago

And not to mention that only Windows gets the Blue Screen of Death! (although I think the author was just trying to mention the equivalent of the BSOD

Also, isn't VxWorks a variant of Unix instead of Linux?

Bella

That was a very interesting discussion about the ups and downs of using Vista; I, too, have to admit I would probably be on the Vista bandwagon is M$ wasn't being such a jerk (using a nice word) about the. y'know, forced conversion campaign. I think, in one felled sweep, M$ has completely and utterly lost all my respect--because they have lost theirs for the consumer, probably very long ago. But they have irrevocably damaged my view on them; if only out of spite or the courage of my convictions I will never patronize them again.

This said, there be only three things I really do on my computer: writing, web browsing, and artwork.

And about that VxWorks article...Where was that author getting his sources? I mean...did they even give Wikipedia a look? It's not related to Linux, hell, Linux didn't exist when it was first manufactured. Not to mention this is a realtime OS while Linux, is most cases, isn't.

At any rate, I'm happy my router's OS is back on Mars again ;)

Correct on all accounts!  There's a reason I call you Aurora-hime.  ^^

Regarding the speed, a RISC processor can certainly do a lot more with little processing speed compared to x86 stuff.  That's why it's considered very reliable for embedded stuff.

There is embedded Linux, but relative to tried-and-true embedded OSes it's still a work in progress and perhaps not well-suited to being launched into space where you won't be able to pop open the case and see what's wrong.  ^.^'

Maybe in a few more years -- and certainly from all the other space agencies around the world that have gained traction.  ^^

Even this FORUM would've served as a better source compared to whatever he looked up (if he looked up anything at all).  ^^;

I'm telling ya, that girl gets to places, and FAST.  ^v^
Hopefully that's more inspiration for your Linux story. ^___^

You do seem to be a rage magnet -- stop attracting rage already!  :P
But yes, even though the actual details of the settlement haven't been revealed yet, it seems it's of far better benefit to Open Source.

I'm actually surprised that AMD has not issued an ultraportable processor yet, especially considering the rising popularity of these things.  The only major competition the Intel Atom has is from the new VIA Isaiah.  And while I hear it is pretty good, I'm not holding my breath for anything from VIA just quite yet.  :P

JA8956 / Patrick

well amd has a kind of ultra mobile cpu , its called "geode"  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geode_%28processor%29

But its realy weak, it has less performance than the intel atoms.
Im happy that my small eee pc usese the Celeron 353ULV. its a realy powerfull cpu on that small machíne if you unlock the true power , because the 353ULV series based on the pentium M 710 series.
It has yust the half cache ( now only 512 Kb L2) but for e-mail and some videos its ok. But i must say as an intel lover im quite imressed about the Via Isaiah, that platform has a true potential.

Smokey

Man, AMD has got to get their act together, because i remember the times when they pwned Intel... (I loved the duron, it beat the Celeron both in price and performance...:D)

They fell when Core2 drew its mighty sword.

Also, with Nehalem coming this fall they might not even have a chance to catch up...
