Well you may not have an actual software firewall, but it's still to be seen whether your modem/router has some filtering solution in plac.  I know thats the case with my modem, so I had to do port-forwarding, at least back when I was using uTorrent.  :(

Le sigh....

Oh well, I'll thinka something else.  ;)

In the meantime, 'fraid tech support is all I can afford this evening.  Maybe I'll have better luck tomorrow, and get back to some LONG overdue responses.  :D

Smokey

On the article, LOL... At least he didn't ask a random price for Ubuntu, so he wasn't all bad... :D

And why would you want to get firefighters on standby?

Because when YOU try cooling things down, they go up in smoke instead.

And! uTorrent is most certainly the best torrent utility I've ever come across. I used BitComet before. It was...abysmal. >_>
And torrent networks are always problematic when it comes to seeders and leechers - maxupload, other users, etc, etc. But that's a given. I can still download the latest Bleach episode in well under 2 minutes, and that's good for me. -w-

Oh! And about ASUS, I've got to step somewhat in their favor here, since I just this saturday bought a pair of their products. One WIIIDEscreen monitor, and one gracious motherboard. When I get my pay next month I'll buy me a Q9-something processor and a bunch of DDR3 modules too, and then finish shit off with some crossfire gfx cards, and we'll finally be up and running if shit works this time around (it'd better). Rant rant rant. But anyway. ASUS is good stuff when it comes to hardware. I'll give them that.

Also, I realized that Alpha now has an uptime of 4 days or something, since I leave it on overnight and day. This is a bad sign, isn't it? >.>

uhhh,... yeah,...

I agree with Nejin-san... might be paranoid, but everytime I combine "overclocking" with the name "Smokey", I tend to think disaster ensues.  :P

Yeeeeeeeeeeah,... well, lemee put it in perspective....  ^^;
I pulled out the battery of my EeePC, hooked it on AC, and let it seed my Beta 3-1 release (and other distros) since it was released.  Going on a week now, so my "toy" laptop already has a better uptime.  ;D

Poor Nejin-san's gonna have to mess around with more thermal paste at this rate....  ^.^;

In other news, I gotz the good readz for the day:

well, my PC is back to an uptime of a month now following a short break.
Before that it reached an uptime of nearly a year...
(And i'm going to reassemble my keyboard first, since typing with the top off is a real pain...I'm cleaning the thing )

How could you assign a price for something so perfect? It is truly priceless. For Ubuntu is like a treasure to be shared with the world.

QuoteNumber 1

Do not sneak in to work early one morning, insert Linux live CDs into everyone’s desktop system...

...I have actually done this as an April Fools Day prank. I put a Barebones Puppy liveCD into my dad's computer; but instead of indignation or intrigue, I got mild indifference. Among family and friends, Linux usually brings...mild indifference. XD

Smokey

I have so far only managed to succesfully introduce a form of Linux to 2 people, both were convinced by stating that "It's free and legal, no matter what you do with it", "About a zillion times more stable than windows and with a bazillion less security leaks" and off course "Linux has an Office Suite wich is perfectly capable of opening and modifying M$ Office documents"...
I still have to experiment with WINE and make i run games stable (and preferably more efficient than Windows) to win my mates over, since we're bound to windows as the sole means of hassle-free gaming...
I have to admit, though that i haven't started experimenting with WINE, since it would mean interrupting my current uptime... I've come to a point where i make eefficient use of my 4GB of RAM by not shutting down games i play, but merely switching to the desktop by means of the windows key or an alt-tab...
I now have 2 games, an editor, 2 Firefox windows, both full of opened tabs, utorrent, winamp and 2 explorer windows open, while i'm typing this... :D
I have to say btw that i LOVE the way that Firefox remembers what pages she has opened for you when you shutdown the PC without closing her (or when a power failure occurs)...
And i'm having a rant here, wich i rarely do...sweet... :D

I can't believe Miss I-Can-Kick-Ass-In-Old-VMS-Games can let herself be defeated by a simple little torrent boggle.  The shame, Bella-hime, the shame....  Â¯-¯

But in any event, didn't come here for that, so you're off the hook... -v-

QuoteWell, i already do like Vista...

But the problem is Vista is kinda like 2 things in one...

On one side you have a gaming platform, wich is (or will be) able to run games really nicely, and therefore is basically just an evolution of XP...

On the other hand however, they (M$) smothered Vista with unneccesary (and unnecesarily demanding) eyecandy and trinkets, slowing down (or crippling) the system...

So, basically if they make a sober, stripped version of Vista, like XP, but with better gaming api's (like an evolution of XP), then it will be a good (for M$'s doing) windows...

So, yeah, I love it and hate it...

I'm afraid to show myself at the MEWXPZLFUDAWV club...

Well first off, it's not like we're a bunch of starving piranhas ready to chomp down on dissent, although that is the prevailing stereotype.  ;)

You can generally tell the difference between honest discussion and raving madness by the amount of credit one side is willing to give to the other.  If one side is willing to admit benefits as well as flaws in the opposition, then that's honesty as nothing's perfect.  But if said side is unilateral in the loathe for the opposition, seeing it as unconditionally evil and without merit,... then it would be a good time to run while you still can. :P

Believe it or not, I have played XBOX 360 (awkwardly, given how used to I am to the Wii controllers), and while I do find the FPS games (e.g., Halo 3, Gears of War) not to my liking, I do awe at the technical and narrative achievements.  I've not played such a game on Vista, but I've never had doubt any of the newer games at least running gushingly-beautiful on it.  Couple that with prior gems such as the "Age of..." series of RTS games, and there's definitely no denying M$ knows how to do games.  Probably helps a lot that their gaming division is fairly independent compared to the other departments.

However, I would argue that the sober, stripped-down version of Vista you crave WOULD IN FACT be Windows XP with a few minor [sober] updates and DirectX 10 support.  If M$ were committed to give consumers what they wanted and simply improve on their flagshop product that has served people's (and corporation's) needs for now almost a decade, then they wouldn't receive nearly as much hate as they do now.

But that being said, it's very possible that XP is crippled in gaming (versus Vista) more so by design then technical merit.  The Linux kernel has been around since 1991, yet has managed to keep up with the times through incremental improvements -- no reason why the Windows Kernel used in XP couldn't be upkeeped the same way.  This ties back to the planned obsolescence not just of your software, but your beloved hardware as well.

And given how easy it is to create very entertaining things by making them play smoothly (which I find akin to the ease of making food tasty by adding more grease), it certainly sounds like a very cheap hook to get you to surrender yourself unconditionally.  A Roman analogy would be the issuance of a decree to burn your house and take your gold, in exchange for a VIP Pass to free orgies for a week, plus the best damn Coliseum games money can buy.  :D

Not saying you stop using it because knowledge of Vista is still a useful skill to have.  Heck, one of the core developers to EeePCLinuxOS IS a Vista user, and we're good friends.  But I definitely insist you always keep your skepticism, and watch out for shenanigans.  I know I was quite cautious even when I was using Mac OSX, and it was for the better as it prevented me from agreeeing to rather shady (in my opinion) .Mac and iTunes licenses.

In any event, that's my take on that, Brother Smoke.  ^^

Let me end the day with a bit of good news,... the coming of another potential Baby.... ^___^

Awww. that's one cute looking notebook... ;010

And, yeah...
You have reminded me of my statement on all hard- and software made by microsoft...:
It's not their (Vista, XBOX, XP etc) fault that they're riddled with problems... They are actually quite good if you consider where they came from... :D (I expect every M$ product to suck hard, so it always seems better than i anticipated...)

Hey guise.

Has any of you any experience with  vLite?
It might seem as a good way to lighten vista's amount of FAIL.
YOU COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS

The last lightweight windows i used was as annoying as vista (how paranoïd can an OS get?!), since they stripped out way too much, fun for games, since it was a gamer edition but no printing, almost none of the DOS commands, only one wisual theme (winamp theme), only supporting US-keyboard layout (I always use US-Int.) oh and it didn't even support all the games...

But i'll keep it in mind when i reinstall one of the windozers....

Well I've not seen any legal issues with regards to the personal use of nLite/vLite (something which can't be said for distribution), so yeah why not?   I love an app that cedes more power back to the user.  :)

In other words, even though the title sounds uplifting, even I have to admit the article is annoyingly misleading and factually incorrect:
