Yeah i know, servers from that age didn't need to be small... ;010

But i like big computers, gives you more space to work... :D

QuoteTrue... Old PC's weren't built with minituarisation in mind, but it's greener than buying a new one...

That reminds me of an old case study I did, analyzing whether washing dishes by hand for a year wasted more or less resources than sticking it into a dishwasher or using disposable plates.  Presumably some of the impacts of washing dishes by hand were in the energy expenditure required to heat the water, and the paper towels needed to dry them -- and presumably this was supposed to have offset the cost of the electricity/resources needed to run/build the dishwasher, as well as the ecological impact of creating paper/styrofoam plates and sending them to a landfill.

But as I....................... kindly pointed out to the drafter,... that's a very anglocentric comparison.  I can wish dishes with cold water just fine, I air dry only, and if I'm feeling like a slob I can reuse the normal plate/cup more times than is sanitarily-recommended.  And no doubt, a huge percentage of the world's population is in the same boat, if they even have access to clean water or plates to begin with.

....

Morale of the story is..... beware He who used to have a Beast in His room that was big enough to stick a corpse in, noisier than a space shuttle launch, and used enough power to light up the Rockefeller tree.  BWAHAHAHA!!!!  ^V^

I kid, I kid.....  ^.^

QuoteOh, to heck with all the technical aspects...what color it it? Lawl.

Any color you want, as long as it's black.  :P

QuoteAh, makes me think of my 1998 Compaq Presario...I'm so used to my laptop (which is quite huge by today's standards, BTW), that using that thing is like playing on a minicomputer or something. The tower's like, a foot and a half tall and at least a 8 inches wide and a foot deep (I think that would be like 45 cm tall, 20 cm wide, and 30 cm deep, if I did my conversions correctly) O__o

かã,ã,,ã,,!! ^v^

...

Well, I mean for a computer of its era.  ^_____^

My new cutie is 27cm long, 18cm wide, 17cm high.  ^v^

And I guess THIS would compliment the article quite nicely:

And then a review of gOS Space, which if not for the MySpace-centric focus would actually sound kinda feasible.....

...wanted to try it in Virtualbox, but alas,... it needs Graphics Acceleration.  ^^'
Probably the reason why it doesn't run on a VIA chip.

Added after 29 minutes:

Oh, and this is worth a read too, given that we're more about stimulating the long-lost art of "People Power", rather than urge people to use this or that system:

Just what I kinda thought; an older machine uses a lot more energy than a newer one...that's assuming you still run it on a regular basis, though :P

QuoteAny color you want, as long as it's black. :P

Shucks, I was hoping to hear it was some sort of colorful print one ;)

That's just...gorgeous...@__@

But it needs graphics acceleration? Is that due to Compiz?

Humph...was there always such a fuss when M$ introduced a new OS, or is XP really an exceptional case...?

Smokey

Quote from: "Bella"Just what I kinda thought; an older machine uses a lot more energy than a newer one...that's assuming you still run it on a regular basis, though :P

Hang on a minute.....
Now if i'm not mistaken, those ooold processors, though energy inefficient perhaps, do use less power to operate since there are far less transistors to guzzle up electricity...
Plus, browsing/mailing can be done on a 2MB VGA card wich, too uses less power to run than modern day (integrated) GPU's... (I'll assume that the power hungry performance cards -like the 72Watt Gf8800 - aren't going to be used but still onboard "simple" gfx-solutions are powerhouses compared to a truly simple SIS s3 PCI 2MB videocard)

Oh, and here's the fun part... If you take a PI, you can stick a nice and big Athlon/early PIV cooler on it and remove the fan so it's noiseless and powersaving, and it'll still keep the processor cool... (if Linux'll work on a 486DX2/66 it won't need any cooler ;010)

And, if you still don't believe that an old PC can be tought to take little nips of electricity, consider this: You can give them a 135W powersupply and they'll have power to spare, as opposed to my PC, wich refuses to start with anything less than a 350W powersupply :D

It's hardly noticeable that i like old pc's, is it :D

QuoteJust what I kinda thought; an older machine uses a lot more energy than a newer one...that's assuming you still run it on a regular basis, though :P

Well actually,... not really what I meant.  The morale of my convoluted story is actually that energy savings is a very complex affair, dependent on many factors beyond anyone's immediate scope, and not clear-cut enough to be judged by anything beyond a case-by-case basis.  Some older computers can be less efficient than newer ones, vice-versa, and as Smokey-san said, some tweaking can be done to reverse the odds -- especially since improper disposal of either one is a FAR more damaging scenario.  @__@

I believe there's a debate on ethanol use that has similar undertones, but alas,... we're a computer club.  ^___^

QuoteShucks, I was hoping to hear it was some sort of colorful print one

Well in fairness, you CAN put your picture in the front of the unit.  But that's left for you to do -- I think they provide Kover artwork, but not free.  :P

QuoteThat's just...gorgeous...@__@

Yepper.  ^^
Heard some minor complaints that the extra hardware requirements (between mandatory CF and Gnome) closes the door to older hardware, which run gOS 1.0 and 2.0 just fine.  All things considered, I would have to agree -- but at least the gOS guys were nice enough to warn that the distro may not operate properly in any other computer besides the MygPCMini.

QuoteIt's hardly noticeable that i like old pc's, is it

Naaaaaaaaaaaaah,... news to me....  :P
I'm still waiting for you to pick up a 68K Amiga any day now.  You do that, and I'll worship you like a GAWD........ during my visitations.......  ^^;

The blue LED is a blue LED-80mm fan... :D

And although i do believe that open-source software can nibble away on closed source software's sales, i wouldn't think that it'd cost that much, plus as explained in the article, and the next one about Dell's laptops, if you're smart, you can actually make money off open sourced software...

Well, I can see where open source stuff could be taking away money that would otherwise line big corporations' pockets. But I don't consider that a bad thing.

Like one person commented, "GM being is business is taking money from Ford, too".

I can't believe Dell is actually pushing the Ubuntu laptops...I wonder what they're up to...

And that article about educational Linux programs is really interesting! I didn't know there were that many out there, honestly.

I don't think it could be costing them that much, either; I mean, it'd be great if it was, but I just don't see it happening.

Well, now that i've taken a closer, better look at it, a question arises in my mind...: Where's the Optical Drive?? I'd assume that it, cute as it may be, should be able to at least handle DVD's...
