I venture back to my old homes and see that the thing I've been diving into has now being discussed.

As far as Touhou goes, I'm more immersed in the community than I am the games, although I will play them for a good time waster and such. I prefer the PC-98 series over the Windows for some reason, perhaps because I was exposed to PC98 alot more than Windows and have thus grown attachted to it. Meh.

Speaking of which - is there any easy way to emulate PC-98 software/os on your usual box? It'd be pretty interesting to see the roots of things...

well, when I acquired the touhou games, the PC-98 games did come with an emulator...

never really bothered to look around.

A MASSIVE INFLUX OF MUSIC HAS BEEN OBTAINED...


There's this guy who does an amazing youtube channel with lots of cool arranges of touhou music (for example the Okuu theme one we saw in the clip thread earlier) one in metal flavor, one in classical/unplugged and one techno one. Turns out, his website offers mediafire ddl's of the packs with the mp3's themselves...THE GLORY IS BOUNDLESS.

Now, I know most of the time people are averse to fandubs. Especially music.

But if you haven't gotten tired of Bad Apple!!, I have 2 covers for you. I thought they were pretty good, but your mileage may vary.  (Slightly OT, I... dislike Vee's voice acting, but she tends to voice the annoying girl anyway, so I guess it fits)

Meh, Christina's version was awful IMHO.  But them again, most dubbed versions of japanese songs are awful.  Miku's "Take It Easy!!!" for example. *shivers*

Heh, maybe I've been listening to too much J-Pop and Autotune. I'm all desensitized to it.  Or maybe I'm concentrating too much on the lyrics. Often, the lyrics translation will make a song 10x better for me.  I thought that was well done in CV's version.

I know this was... all covered in this first page of the thing. I mean, the thread. Forums. Whatever. I dunno...

Anyway, um. For those of us who hate clicking the mouse, can someone give an explanation about what Touhou is? Well, rather, clarify a random explanation?

Is it an online game? What genre? Ehh... I dunno. I use Touhou backgrounds on Izumi, my laptop. It sounds cool, from what everyone says. And the characters are kawaii. But I can't find out too much about it, other than the regions where it was released and the... um. Stuff.

Touhou wiki is good for finding specific information, but I've found, not so good at introducing new people to it.

I've been mulling in my head a series of articles that's essentially "Touhou for the uninitiated"

I haven't really written anything concrete, but I think this is a good starting point.

Touhou is a series of shoot em ups (shmups) that fall into the "bullet hell" subcategory of shmups.  The source material are the games created by Team Shanghai Alice, whose only known member is ZUN. ZUN is the programmer, artist, and writer of these games.  

He releases these games as a doujin game.  He does not enforce copyright in the slightest. The Touhou fanbase is largely centered on fan-made material. There are probably terabytes worth of touhou doujin music out there by now. You'll find a ton of doujinshi and and doujin games as well.  These allow for multiple fan interpretations of the characters and stories.  They run the gamut from moe moe touhou, to srs bsns touhou.  Touhou can be anything you wish it to be, really.

If you have more questions, feel free to ask. I want to flesh out these thoughts of mine, write these articles, and maybe help remove misconceptions that some people have about touhou.
