Future Opteron's XIO controller operates at 4.8 GHz, so DDR3 1.3 GHz is only supported (4.8 GHz buffered XDR being the maximum), mostly to avoid internal FSB lag and memory bottleneck, otherwise Opteron will perform like a piece of crap. The reason AMD chosen DDR3, is because it's in sync with on-die XMC, 600 MHz base clock goes in hand to hand with both 1.3 GHz FSB for DDR3 and 4.8 GHz FSB for XDR.

So, in other word, it's not possible to use DDR2 on socket G34.

Smokey

Thank goodness AM3 still supports that old DDR2... that stuff is dirt cheap here... about â,¬10,- per GB... :D, plus i would like to keep using my 4GB a while longer... ^_^

Dr. Mario

Yeah. Could be helpful in install Vista (before AMD's updated driver is to be installed) while using an AM3 motherboard (very few developmental AM3 motherboard have XDIMM slots.) DDR2 first, XDR last. =_=

Anyhow, don't try to run Vista alone on Phenom II (with its XIO controller unlocked) with XDR installed. Tried it, got in a paradise of BSOD (immediately after EFI utility exited with a "PASSED" mark).

Smokey

Oh, that reminds me of when i installed an extra GB of RAM, making a total of 4 on my laptop, it has 32bit Vista and it booted right up to a nice BSOD...

;014 Yea, same thing happened to me, except it complained of unknown RAM type, only to be corrected by Rambus memory driver. (No, not RDRAM driver... Both are different. Updated AMD driver is more likely to have XDR initalization instructions, but I had to hand-code it, because I couldn't find the driver, amdk11.sys for Vista, better off being built in Windows 7, and for a test x86 CELL BE.)

And, yes, it booted Windows 7 x64 up successfully (with 8GB XDR, just to see if any of wheels have popped off.)

Smokey

Nice, maybe win7 is a good OS... ^_^
Not that i've had any issues (besides the swarm of compatibility errors/issues) with Vista...

Dr. Mario

Yeah, unlikely the Vista. Vista sucked badly that everybody reinstalled Windows XP on their computers. ;franz;  MS shoulda worked a bit better on hardware support...
;025 Now, Bowser... What can I do with you...

Smokey

i know, i tried it to see how hard it sucked, and i have to keep it because of how wonderful my SLI works in Vista...It didn't work in XP... Plus there's DX10... so basically the plusses outweigh the downsides...just... ^_^

Dr. Mario

True. At least Service Pack 1 did ease the problems in Vista.
;025 Now, Bowser... What can I do with you...

Smokey

too bad windows always needs service packs, plus a shipload of smaller updates to help most problems....

YOU COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS

Smokey

Obviously, M$ first need to have feedback before they do anything...

Dr. Mario

Yep. Feedbacks after feedbacks, it often never help, better off hunting down the software pieces, whose acting like a baka, thus taking a long time. I think M$ shoulda called it Windows Wrecked instead of Vista!
;046  Ooh, here come Windows Wrecked, comin' to wreck your computer!
Okay, it's a bad humor... ^-^;

NejinOniwa

If Win7 is number 7, then Vista's final version would be...

Windows 69. -w-

Dr. Mario

>_> 69 sound kinda dirty. Anyways, why not Windows 59?
