I have a BSOD widget installed on my computer!

It's convincing too and when I get back in the mood for practical jokes again, I'll activate it, fake a panic attack and tell my parents that "Oh NOEZ! My Mac got the blue screen of death!"

Macs don't have BSODs................right?

I had one of those things too at school, pressing <ctrl>-<f6> summoned a blue screen so teachers/admins couldn't see what i was doing...

Macs don't get BSODs unless it's an Intel Mac with Windows installed on it and you're unlucky. (mine's a Power PC Mac)

In the Classic Mac OS, you get 'error bomb' dialogue boxes or a 'Sad Mac' icon at startup. In Mac OSX, you get a Kernel Panic since OSX is Unix-based... which still seems so wrong to me! Yeah, sure OSX is fine too (Tiger is not giving me any problems. Gotta like that!) but I say long live the Classic Mac OS! HAHAHAHAHA! No, this is not a repeat from 2002. Truth be told back then I was eager to upgrade to OSX because of all teh eyecandy and teh shiny! Luckily I'm a lot more practical-minded these days and take other factors into consideration!

yeah, those screens are cool... saldy those iMacs and these days other iProducts make me rage and took away the respect i had for mac...

Well, I've been playing around with ME on a virtual machine and have some observations:

1. It refuses to install on VirtualBox, so I can't have 3D accelleration! It installed on VirtualPC first time.

2. Been using it for over a day now, no BSODS, everything works as I had hoped.

3. File copying is a bit slow. I set up a shared drive between host & guest and it took almost 10mins to copy 4MB worth of files (though there were an awful lot), but oddly only 2 to copy 78MB worth of files (only about 5 in the folder tho).

I found a website that has unofficial patches and service packs that I'll probably use when I install it for real. But so far, I haven't found the need to.

What about System Restore? A lot of websites I found reccommended turning it off...

Good for you that you have not had major problems with ME!

But I can't help you with the System Restore part but from what websites did you read that? It might not be a bad idea if the sites in question have credibility to them.

I can't remember the name, but they did some benchmarks with 98 & ME and there was a SIGNIFICANT difference towards the higher end of the spectrum when you turned SR off. I think it's based on processor speed/memory though.

DELTA is acting up on me lately. She crashes more frequently while gaming now (I dunno what it is that gets overheated, but it's probably something), and moreover, she gave me a FAT bluescreen today. TWICE. And then she refused to acknowledge the functionality of the hard drive, so I had to pull the plug and reconnect it. And get a damn chkdisk. Which took 15 minutes.

I'm considering moving to Linux now, seriously -_-

if your HDD reached it's MTBF not even Linux will help...

I dont care so much about the MBTF , modern hard disks have about 50000 running hours life time,
to reach this you have to run your computer nonstop about 5 years and 7 month.
And I guess after 3 years your hard disk is already to small and you are about to by a new one.

But be carefull, massive use of the disk , like for file sharing software , or other heavy acces and write opperations eventually reduce your disks live time, same goes for to high temperatures ( 40 deg Celsius or 104 deg Fahrenheit are the optimum )

If you use a Notebook avoid using it in Vibrating areas like on the backseat of a car.
If you follow this few basic things you have for a long time working disk !

But as usual, backups are always a must !

And it's functioning alright now, don't worry. CHKDISK said it was some lost file that seemed like it belonged in a system folder, so I guess that was what did it, which means it's probably XP and the damn NTFS format's faults, but still...

And those optimum specs you talk of are so far away it's not even funny, considering the sheer amount of downloading and/or uploading I do, and that DELTA's mobo temperature (as I am writing this, running nothing else than OpenOffice, Winamp and Firefox) is 50 degrees celsius...I really need better cooling for this shit, seriously -.-

MBTF = ( Mean time between failure )
or to make it short how long a disk normaly survive, sometimes a bit more....

Indeed, thats why police laptops dont last long. That and the cars vibration also wears down on the screen so it cant stand on its own after a while.
