What computer/OS are you using?

You know...too much storage on small devices like that makes for LOTS OF LAG...
YOU COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS

Dr. Mario

Not necessarily. It depends massively on memory controller.
Many flash memory know that. That's why Intel had to design the memory controller from scratch.

Although, it's also true for DRAM, unless you multiply the clock rate and have ECC enabled.
Ever wondered why AMD got Rambus IP license?

If you don't know, it's to put XDR memory controller to work for future Phenom II and Athlon and it's going to happen much soon,
because the more cores you put in the quicker the limit DDR 3 is going to hit.

Added after 20 minutes:

Anyways, flash and RAM are different animals.

Yeah, I really want to put my hands on PC XDR memory.
Beside, many people said XDR will never make it to PC design;
Not true, just "overdued" postponed - it will make it to AMD processor - Opteron first.
AMD said Rambus XDR is YERY likely to be used in Socket G34 - that's what I heard.

Just wanted to give some informations.

BTW, I like your avatar, NejinOniwa.
;025 Now, Bowser... What can I do with you...

Smokey

have to agree with DrMario, lag can be countered by more efficient controlling or a better link...

And AMD developing new processors and sochets is why i haven't swapped my AM2 for an AM2+, i'll wait for at least an AM3...:D
I dont tell you how to tell me what to do, so dont tell me how to do what you tell me to do... Bender the Great) :/

Dr. Mario

Good point, Smokey.
Sorry about the previous post, I was buzzed in my mind. (Nowhere drunk, though.)
I shoulda said, "The flash memory makers know that"

Anyways, about AMD's plan of transition to XDR DRAM memory, it will probably start with Radeon HD5000 video chip.

For some reason I like Rambus now - the future Phenom II X8 (and Bulldozer) should (and will) benefit from XDR memory with no overhead limit that DDR 3 now face.
(if anybody don't believe me, go play Crysis - you will know why quickly.)
;025 Now, Bowser... What can I do with you...

Smokey

Oh, god... Crysys, the game my system can't handle well...

But i can't seem to find juicy info on AM3 boards or higher, nor can i find the Phenom x8... ;063

Dr. Mario

Guess it's just me. (I have been putting my nose in Japanese Tech Expo - AMD did hinted that they're serious about Rambus XDR memory in Opteron X6 [Socket G34] and Radeon HD5k.)

I have played Crysis on a x86 CPU using 8GB 4.8GHz XDR as a part of test - the result was impressive. (can't say the name of CPU yet, though - yes, I'm going to use the same CPU in NES computer project.)

Smokey

it sems to me you're more "on the inside" than i am... :D

Alpha/Beta-tester, perhaps?

Dr. Mario

Yuppity-yup.
And I may have (or may already have) a job at the same corporation who gave me the CPU to beat the c**p out of it, like doing benchmark with smart overclocking enabled (yes, it's chilled on the ice, using Peltier plate. I'm pretty fussy about thermal management when it come to the CPU chip.) - to be a circuitry designer and programmer.
;025 Now, Bowser... What can I do with you...

Smokey

and we have the reason why i'm doing this...

Basically to go to IBM/AMD/ASUS and surprise them with my rough skills...;010 (maybe even get hired...:D)

Dr. Mario

Probably, the company that I got a job from, probably would hire you (the Japanese dudes over there are considering USA, Holland, and of course, Germany.)
;025 Now, Bowser... What can I do with you...

Smokey

Good, more motivation for me... :D

Meanwhile, do you know any useful resources on MoBo design??
I am getting more and more stumped here... ;013

Dr. Mario

Good, yay!

Since motherboard differs, I recommend you stick to whitepaper for more informations. (The datasheet for specific chip that you'rd going to use - you can google for the obsoleted chip's datasheet - like Intel Technical Datasheet for i8088, for example.)

Me? For NES? Yes, I have them. Well, for the CPU, I knew it should be fed from VRM chip using 7-bit VID, and have it pumped with 200MHz PLL for core clock, 300 - 667MHz for the memory controller.
;025 Now, Bowser... What can I do with you...

Smokey

Thanks...

And i pity my desk as she'll be drowned in paperwork now...(along with the living room)  ^_^

Dr. Mario

Smokey, I'm guessing you're using CRT monitor, right?

(Just askin' since you complained that you didn't like to stare at the screen - I don't blame you - I hate CRT monitor that my eyes wanted to roll back into my skull - I may buy OLED monitor someday, just to ease eyesore a bit...)
;025 Now, Bowser... What can I do with you...

Smokey

Oh, no i have TFT monitors, but i dislike the [alt]-[tab]-ing while i can have the info on paper...

I do have a CRT television still but that's for compatibility with my Nintendo Scope... :D

And this is tricky business, i have a lot to learn, before i can make a detailed design... But it keeps me busy in a way that will help me (and possibly others ^_^)
