QuoteWow... O_O; Good thing I didn't get my free copy of Vista! Then I would of had two computers that I would have to fight with!

Windows stuff is never free,... they always insert a hidden cost somewhere.  ^.^
Well... When I bought my computer, E-machines was giving out free copies of Vista to anyone who bought their computers. But it was only valid up to a certain date. Which I missed. XD I didn't know what Vista looked liked at the the time so I didn't want to take any chances since if I didn't like it, I wouldn't be able to go back to XP since it was pre-loaded into the machine. Meaning, I have no XP installation CD.

QuoteAnd I'd venture to guess that it's even MORE secure than Vista, at least the non-SP2's, only because you have less things spying on you (and hence, less security holes open).

I'd dare to say that, using the same cautious measures that any intelligent user would take when using a Windows OS, Vista is at least AS SECURE as XP.
Using a firewall, a good antivirus and an anti-spyware program should keep any computer safe enough.
-_-

Quote(though it's much cooler with a glassy theme like Royale or Zune)
oh, Royale...that theme kicks ass.
I never liked Zune, though. Royale Noir looks better :D
Luna it's just too cheesy >_>

Emachine T1120...

Using it, Not by choice. My other comp is out of order because I need a new graphics card for it... but... Its integrated into the Motherboard... -_-

So...yeah... stuck with this one...
Integrated graphic cards suck. I'm using one right now =/

....

Don't know If I posted this before, but...
Right now using a Gateway MX6945M Laptop
- 2GB Ram
- Intel Core2Duo @ 1.6ghz
- 160 GB HDD
- Intel 945GM Integrated Graphics chipset =/
- Windows Vista Home Premium.

0 BSOD, 0 Crashes and 0 compatibility problems until now. No sign of DRM  or "calling home".
RAM used by "default" at Startup: 450mb. Win XP eats 350mb in my old 1GB pc. And yes, I disabled any other programs aside Windows services in both XP and Vista.

So, yar point? Vista works perfectly when it comes as the default OS on a new PC. Though, I wouldn't recommend installing it in an old computer, since there may be some problems with the drivers.

QuoteIn fact recently, it gave a lot of people quite a number of scares and/or headaches:
You people really hate Vista. XP had the same problems. Blame them both in that case. -_-

QuoteI never liked Zune, though. Royale Noir looks better

Royale Noir was an aftermarket theme, though, so I never used it...

Yes, complete wuss when it comes to UXTheme patching >__<

As for XP's problems vs. Vista, I don't think I've ever seen the kind of bad press against one OS. I mean in XP's case, there's technical articles here and there but with Vista, even a lot of mainstream news outlets have had articles reporting these things.

I still think most people are too attached/comfortable/happy with to XP to want to give it up for anything less than a spectacular OS ;)

If Vista does what you want and it works for you, go for it; Just as I have heard horror stories (and witnessed a few myself) about XP and I don't understand what the problem is.

The bottom line is that you're happy with your OS :)

Bella-san ought to get a medal, just for being so generally nice all the time. ^_^

I'm also going to have to agree with Bella-san on this one. If you like Vista, then go with it. If you like XP, then go with XP. I still love my 3.1 so I asked my dad to keep in and put it in the basement. But the sad part is that the screen is officially broken so my 3.1 will probably be never used ever again. But I still love it. ^__^ *hugs* I also still love my 98SE. Just... I wish it still worked properly... ;__;

uh? aftermarket? I installed it along Royale.
And I never dared to apply the UXTheme, I don't know why >_>.

Well, the bad press may be due to the fact that Vista didn't fulfilled many of the expectations. Microsoft promised too many things, and didn't accomplished all of them.
When XP was released, there were some people that preferred to stay with 2k due to the fact that XP occupied more memory, supposedly less stable, more security holes, etc. I think I started to see a decline in "XP complain/help plz" after SP2. And yes, it never reached the level of "Vista haet", but I guess it's all due to the hype generated with Vista.

Many people are paranoid about DRM, but I have yet to find a case of Vista DRM in use. And I don't think DRM will be enabled some time in the future, due to legal reasons (?). But well, it's a valid reason to avoid Vista.
The "ZOMG HUEG ammounts of RAM Vista uses" its another argument, but the difference between Vista and XP consume isn't really great. As I said, my startup it's just 100 mb more than XP. And, in exchange of some new process like the search indexer, It's worth it.
It's been proved that Vista it's slighty less effective in using games than XP, but, after all the reviews I have read, no one it's completely sure if its due to the OS or inefficient drivers.
Compatibility, while I have not experienced any problems, may be a problem, since some hardware may not work due to lack of proper drivers.

And problems with activation are usual since XP. Hell, I had the same problem once when trying to activate an original XP copy.

And remember that Vista hasn't received yet a SP ;)
...

Although my post looks like propaganda, no, I don't recommend you to replace Windows XP with Vista :D. IMHO, the only feature that make Vista worth the installation its the File indexer built into the OS (never liked Google Desktop. Too much RAM). However, for someone who's buying a new computer, Vista it's not a bad OS.

Of course, as you said, everyone it's free to use the OS they like. :P
And yes, I'm happy with my OS :)

P.S: nice avatar

Huh...did you get it from Softpedia...?

That's one of the problems I never figured out. I never had one problem w/ activation....

And that's all that matters, cause your the one who has to use your computer :)

I always hated it when those OS zealots would say "well, you shouldn't be using that OS" or "my OS is much better than yours" because everybody has a different view of what a good OS is. What one person hates might work perfectly for another.

Icelilly

Guess what minna!

My tech teacher told me that our 98s in one of the computer labs are going to be replaced with new computers! ^__^ But I'm not sure if it will have Vista or XP Pro like the rest of the computers do. *is all curious*

NejinOniwa

Why that's fancy! Hope for the best, Lilly-san! You never know what might come of it!!! ^-^

And also, in other news...

MAH DELTA IZZA-MAH COMIIIIIIN~!!! ï½·ï¾€â"â"â"â"â"â"(゚∀゚)â"â"â"â"â"â" !!!!

She'll be arriving 3 packages: one with the chassi, all the way from france, in some 3 days; one with the graphics card, which should come tomorrow, and one biggie with the motherboard, DVD drive, RAM, and HDD, which should be home by sunday or monday, depending on how lazy they are. Which means that ON NEXT TUESDAY I CAN START BUILDING SHIT!!! ï½·ï¾€â"â"â"â"â"â"(゚∀゚)â"â"â"â"â"â" !!!!

Copyrights....!?   O___O

I have tried using Vista on my computer. It was cool, until PITA nag screen comes in, that made me gritty along the edge. So I decided Windows 2000 will be here for a while until I just put my own homemade OS, GreenOmega 64 in. Vista just made me cry - I excepted that to be stable but cool OS, now it's trash worthing six years of nothingness (Remember WinFS? That was what I f***ing wanted in Vista. Another gigantic disappointment from Microsoft... T___T)

Hopefully my homemade OS turns out better than Windows... T-T

BTW, NejinOniwa, I'm happy for you too! ^___^

(trotting around in my laboratory, booting demon robot up -
MWA-HAHA!!! uh-oh... I forgot it has Me in it. O_O)
;025 Now, Bowser... What can I do with you...

My school just got the new computers up and running! They have XP Pro on them. I wonder what the did with the old 98s?

NejinOniwa

You hit the jackpot, then, i guess! Good lucky!

SASEKO!!! Whooo!!!

Thank goodness you got XP. Cause today I got to try Vista for the first time...Disclaimer, these are my personal preferences and thoughts, I only used it for a half an hour so I'm no expert. I don't mean piss off any Vista users, if you like it, that's your opinion to have.

Good news: The GUI is beautiful, Window Flip is better in real life. It's fairly fast, and didn't seem to be a "trainwreck" like the non-NT Windows OSs of yore...

Bad news...where do I begin? I guess at the bootup. I just don't like it. I mean, what bootup on earth doesn't have the name of it's OS on it -__-

The GUI is pretty, but it gets a little busy after awhile. I seem to find the XP GUI (with a glassy theme, of course) so much simpler, intuitive, and easier on the eyes.

I was constantly having Beryl flashbacks XD Although I can't say whether Beryl inspired Aero's minimized window previews, and the light-up min/max/close bar, or vice versa...Window Flip was really cool, I'd be neat to see a plugin like that for Beryl...

"Permission to continue?" I can't say it was a huge pain, but it certainly was annoying. When I tried to run Windows Defender, Vista informed me that Windows Defender wasn't running. Hey, here's a thought, that's why I'm asking it to open. Then the screen darkened dramatically, and it asked if I was sure to run Windows Defender. Gosh, it's pretty persistent, maybe running Defender isn't a good idea...

All and all, playing with Vista re-confirmed that XP is, for me at least, the better Windows OS....

C-Chan

That's good to hear.  ^__^
Certainly is more cost-efficient anyway, especially since XP can run any software that's not INTENTIONALLY designed against it.  ^.^
I do fear that Service Pack 3 will,....

<__<.....

>___>.....

..."break" a few things in order to prod more people towards Vista, so I'd advise against updating it when it becomes available next year.  ^^'

(I could be wrong, but then we're talking about the same year XP is slated to be discontinued.... ^^').

Oh, and btw... Compiz Fusion does have something similar to the Windows Flip (although I might be thinking of the spinning windows feature).  ^v^'

QuoteI wonder what the did with the old 98s?

I'm wondering that too.... ;__;

That there is valuable real estate!  ;^0^;
Hopefully Canadians are more conscientious of e-Waste, so they'll find a way to reuse or recycle them properly.  ^^

Oi...now we're talking conspiracy theories...though I wouldn't put anything past them...

I already have SP2, though in my add/remove program settings it says I can remove it.
