What computer/OS are you using?

So, here's what I discovered from my experiments, when I wasn't interrupted by power outages

Build 1877:
- First build of the Beta 2 series (The previous 2 where from Beta 1, while the very first one I used is assumed to be the alpha build)
- Interface wise, it's starting to move past it's NT 4.0 roots and take on a more 2k feel; with a nicer boot screen and such
- Setup allows you to hit F8 to accept the license agreement without having to go down to the last page of it; a feature present in the final version 2k, as well as Neptune and XP
- Crashes during setup, unless you upgrade from an existing setup of build 1729
- Finally has network drivers again, but you can barely go anywhere online (Google is literally the only site that will load)
- Firefox 2.0 will run, but since Google is the only site that works, it's kind of pointless
- Virtualbox video drivers install, but are nonfunctional
- Features "Microsoft Agent"; a custom-tailored version of the Office Assistant for Windows 2000. Thankfully, this was dropped from the final version

I'll have some pictures of it up tomorrow. Once I'm done with this journey, expect to see a special pic showing the various logos they used throughout development

logo pic, whoo~

also, sounds interesting. why don't you like the "microsoft agent' thing, was it annoying? and can you use google to get to other sites like a springboard? :\

Microsoft Agent was like the Office Assistant; in other words, really annoying

Also, my connection was screwy last night. I did get it to work this morning; as you'll see in the other topic :3

So, here's what I found while experimenting with another NT 5.0 beta

Build 1946:
- First build to go under the final name of "Windows 2000 Professional", and also first Beta 3 build
- Crashes during setup, unless upgrading from a previous OS (I did it with NT 4.0 this time)
- A lot of the graphics are completely different from the final version
- The menu coloring is more like the final version, although for some reason the way it looks in 16-color mode reminds me of Windows 3.11
- Has a program called "Private Character Editor"; which allows you to design your own fonts apparently. They should have left this in; this was a cool feature
- The "Network & Dial-Up Connections" link in the Start Menu does not work; you have to cut through the Control Panel
- Virtualbox video drivers still do not work, and we're back to not having network adapter drivers

I'll post pics tomorrow

Came across a Pentium MMX 166MHz system at work that was destined for scrap.  No clue what the motherboard is, as there's no model number I can see anywhere.

Nice, man. Anything with a Pentium MMX needs to be saved when possible :3

I saved one from being scrapped at work; something I'm quite proud of, as I saved it from the same fate as other old desktops floating around the hospital (Being sent to one of my dad's coworkers, who parted them out to be sold for scrap). Now, to get an old PCI-based ATI Rage card for it...

Chocofreak13

get me pics and i can check around my pile. most of my stuff is ANCIENT. (or at least 90's.)

You mentioned you didn't have any PCI- based graphics cards in your pile before, so I don't think you'd have an ATI Rage hiding in there. But, just in case, I'll dig up some pictures later

Chocofreak13

ah yes, fair enough. been a little burnt lately, so pardon me. ^^;

So I've been using an 18.4" laptop at work today.

I want one.

Also been using one with a 1080p 15" screen.

I don't want one.

I usually dislike laptops (in my experience they've always been more failure-prone than desktops) but it's getting to a point where it would be good to have a working one again. : /

I would have suggested the refurbished Compaq Presario CQ61 that they used to have on Newegg, but apparently they no longer stock it. You could have had your own Asagi :3

But, maybe you can find a MacBook running SL at a reasonable price
