Bella

Thanks Kami-Tux. I'm happy that everyone likes her and the daemon :D

C-Chan

QuoteIt's not that...I have found an incredible way to bend time to my liking. I must have developed this power after spending too much time in front of the microwave or something!

*curls up to Bella, cooing and oinking with glee*

Who's your favorite piggy?  ^_____^
Any chance you can lend me some of that power...? ^.^

QuoteAs OS-tans go, GECOS-san would be one of the more...pretentious ones...let's let the Jargon File speak for me.

http://www.faqs.org/docs/jargon/G/GCOS.html

But yeah, I do think that she'd be one to have conflicts with VMS-sama...or Multics-sama...or Unix-sama...she is God's Chosen Operating System after all (this won't make sense unless you read the link, lol).

OMG!  So I'm not all that far off.  She could EASILY be the Old Crone of the CIOST.  ^____^;

QuoteBut yes! You have pointed out some very good penguin/Linux-sama connections. But you forgot to mention, penguins are excellent dancers. So is Linux-sama. That there was a Happy Feet reference.

*dies of shame*

Well okay,... I'm not sufficiently media-deprive to NOT know what that means.  ^^;

*dies of shame along with*

Quote....More like a raven

I guess after watching Princess Tutu, it does seem like a curious choice for someone of her vibrant personality.  But I suppose one person's demon is another person's deity.  ^__^

I mean, there's a WORLD of difference between what some cultures think of pigs, as compared to how they were perceived in the 2007 Chinese New Year. ^__^'

QuoteYes, you did use colored lines! I just looked at the source today

Now that you mention it, Darknight does use colored strokes, too. I always liked how his drawings turned out.

Okay, I standz corrected,.. let's just say that Bella-hime's collaborations bring out the best in me.  -v-

I know I stopped using colored lines for practical reasons since, but did migrate to thin strokes.  Now, especially with the MOS-chan/AROS-chan one, I've grown quite comfortable using both.  ^^

QuoteIncidentally, I had some ideas for OpenBSD-tan's attitude. Perhaps I'll elaborate in the Theories thread.

Don't believe you've elaborated on this yet.  That, or I'm as blind as a bat with a blindfold again.  ^^;

QuoteAll of my designs end up having either a kinda "widows peak" with bangs off to either side, or long bangs held back. I guess this comes from the horrors I faced with bangs! (Okay, not horrors...but they were damn annoying!)

Fufufu.... ^.^

*pokes andn prods for anecdotes regarding Bang Horrors*

Well all my characters end up having very funky hair that would be a nightmare to perm, tie or dye, and probably weigh enough to snap their necks if they so much as turn their heads improperly. ^V^;

QuoteThat's an interesting idea...

And wow, she is HUGE.

Depending on how well I progress with MOS-chan and AROS-chan, I would love to start her submission soon.  I just have to make sure to PNG that height scale, as it's already over a megabyte with it. ^__^

And yeah, she's huge.  She's very tall even for a Mainframe-tan -- you should be lucky I held myself back from making her Damn Big.  ^__~

I said before that the Mainframe-tans take inspiration from the Zentradi from the Macross series, as well as the Greek gods/goddesses from such movies as Clash of the Titans.

That being said, they are very large (on average, 30-38 meters), but also have the ability to shrink down to a normal size if the situation calls for it.  Most either don't have to (because they never leave the Guild), or don't flat out want to, like z/OS-sama who seems intoxicated with her size and power to a fault.

There is a softer explanation to this, though, and it's a detail I'm looking forward to add to her character design:

[ramble]

    Despite her armor being high-tech and intimidating, in particular areas (especially around her shoulders) there are house-sized biospheres embedded in it like jewels.  The inspiration comes from the fact that the newer z/Series mainframes are smaller and hence far more energy-efficient compared to the room-sized mainframes of Old, as well as some server clusters too.

    Within each biosphere is a miniature ecosystem, complete with tiny lakes, tiny trees (like bonsai), tiny mountain ranges, tiny cloud formations and atmosphere, and even their own gravity system -- all fueled by her own body heat.  Aside from tiny fish, crustaceans and insects, her own equivalent of Daemon-tans (each about DSL-tan's size) live in these biospheres.  While some dutifully attend to maintenance of z/OS-sama's armor, quite a surprising number of Daemon-tans live their lives unaware of their fragile existence, and may view any brief glimpse of z/OS-sama literally as a visitation from a Goddess.  Travel between biospheres is possible via an intricate network of tunnels embedded in her armor -- but doing so is dangerous, and in some biosphere cultures outright forbidden to common Daemons.

    Building, caring for, and (in some harsh cases) destroying biospheres is z/OS-sama's one and only cherished pastime, and one she does in the strictest privacy (given that the "goddess" feeling can make her uncharacteristically giddy and playful).  However, while she can "MiClone" the inhabitants of the biospheres along with herself, the resulting change in air pressure and density (as well as potential bacterial invasions) is very traumatic to the Daemon-tans, so she avoids this at all cost under the guise of a "Mainframe's Pride".  ^__~
[/ramble]

QuoteAnything else you notice that was missing before? Say...a reference to Multics-sama being a timesharing system...?

OMG!  You're right, she has a stopwatch!  @v@

You are just too much, Bella-hime!  ^^

Bella

Quote*curls up to Bella, cooing and oinking with glee*

Don't leave until you can turn five minutes into a half hour or vice versa! XD

QuoteOMG! So I'm not all that far off. She could EASILY be the Old Crone of the CIOST. ^____^;

I'm sure that OMG stands for "oh my God'sChosenOperatingSytem". But yes, I'd like to do a full-sized, modern-day version of GECOS-san someday...

QuoteWell okay,... I'm not sufficiently media-deprive to NOT know what that means. ^^;

*dies of shame along with*

DANCING PENGUINS ARE EVERYWHERE! NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

QuoteI guess after watching Princess Tutu, it does seem like a curious choice for someone of her vibrant personality. But I suppose one person's demon is another person's deity. ^__^

Well, I dunno if vibrant is the exact word to describe her. I see CTSS-sama as being very, very unflappably serene and wise, unlike Multics-sama who, at that point, was rather prone to huge ups and downs. I suppose CTSS-sama would have seen her own end approaching...after all, CTSS-sama wasn't making her creators money, and her territory was very limited (CTSS wasn't commercial and only ran on two machines at MIT), but she still faced her fate very gracefully. Not to mention, one of her last great acts in life was keeping Multics-sama alive when she really couldn't care for herself (the last big piece to development on CTSS was a better file system, installed so it could support Mulicts development better), and defending her when she wasn't really able to fend for herself.

QuoteI mean, there's a WORLD of difference between what some cultures think of pigs, as compared to how they were perceived in the 2007 Chinese New Year. ^__^'

Oh yes...it's all about the different cultural perceptions.

Black, for example, has always been considered a foreboding color in the Western world. Ironically, I've always though of white as having connotations to death...which is a more Eastern belief...

QuoteOkay, I standz corrected,.. let's just say that Bella-hime's collaborations bring out the best in me. -v-

I know I stopped using colored lines for practical reasons since, but did migrate to thin strokes. Now, especially with the MOS-chan/AROS-chan one, I've grown quite comfortable using both. ^^

I tend to get stuck in a routine (be it my ways of shading, highlighting, lining, ect.), but every so often I do try to mix things up and try something else...

QuoteDon't believe you've elaborated on this yet. That, or I'm as blind as a bat with a blindfold again. ^^;

No, I didn't get around to it. Aside from being a very good fighter and a master at self defense (as OpenBSD is very secure), she also as a thoughful, creative, even whimsical side. I do suppose she enjoys telling and re-telling stories, using herself and those around her as characters. I suppose she would captivate young and old alike with these fantastic tales of actiton and adventure. I also suppose she might be a good singer; much like her stories, her songs would take on a certain comic whimsy.

These ideas came from the OpenBSD songs that were released.

Quote*pokes andn prods for anecdotes regarding Bang Horrors*

Well all my characters end up having very funky hair that would be a nightmare to perm, tie or dye, and probably weigh enough to snap their necks if they so much as turn their heads improperly. ^V^;

Haha...that sounds like my hair. As for anecdotes regarding bangs...simple, they're annoying and impossible to keep out of one's eyes! But...now that I think about it...I do kinda have a semi-bangs thing goin on right now (but they're long enough to put behind my ears and stuff).

QuoteDepending on how well I progress with MOS-chan and AROS-chan, I would love to start her submission soon. I just have to make sure to PNG that height scale, as it's already over a megabyte with it. ^__^

This would be an awesome drawing...but just remember to keep everything simple! One thing at a time...

And I've always wondered about mainframe-tans and their ability to size-shift. I suppose I always figured a lot of older mainframe-tans never became supersized.

QuoteThere is a softer explanation to this, though, and it's a detail I'm looking forward to add to her character design:

That is such a crazy...but truly wonderful idea! I love it! You've managed to take a character I wasn't particularly fond of, and give her a very interesting side.

Now I really want to see z/OS-sama :3

QuoteOMG! You're right, she has a stopwatch! @v@

You are just too much, Bella-hime! ^^

I figure that among a lot of the early timesharing systems, a pocketwatch would be their "badge" of sorts. Certainly for those at MIT...

C-Chan

Oh crap, I completely forgot about this thread... sorry..... 0v0'

Oh, I meant vibrant because I remembered when you were explaining of the many colorful ways she would entertain the down-trodden Multics-sama.

But yeah, you make her sound sweeter than a honeycomb stuffed with kilos sugar and doused in a vat of agave nectar.  ^____^

That's it, let's down her Sauce right now and have ourselves a Vintage PARTY!!!!!  ^V^

BWAHAHA!!!  I like that little detail of her being a Revisionistic storyteller -- no doubt that sets the framework for more than one credible parody on the UserSpace Gang side.  ^____^'

And I can see her as being a singer,... albeit of the hard rock influence.  I can imagine her during Inferno-chan's youth lulling the young girl to sleep with her own,......... unique,....... takes on public-domain bedtime lullabies.  ^^;

Incidentally, FreeB-chan can also sing rather nicely, but prefers playing an instrument -- so I think the two can make a very great duet.  ^____^

QuoteHaha...that sounds like my hair.

OMG!!!!!!!  What have I done!!!!!!!  @___@

Whatever you do,... DON'T make any sudden movements with your neck.... I still need to see the conclusion of UNIX-sama's and VMS-sama's duel.  @@'

QuoteAs for anecdotes regarding bangs...simple, they're annoying and impossible to keep out of one's eyes! But...now that I think about it...I do kinda have a semi-bangs thing goin on right now (but they're long enough to put behind my ears and stuff).

Shweeeeeeeet!  Bella-hime has bangs, irrespective of their apparent news-to-me annoyance.  ^^
Speaking of which, is your hair pink yet in RL?  ^__~

QuoteThis would be an awesome drawing...but just remember to keep everything simple! One thing at a time...

Nah, I think I'm destined to make it overly complex and burn out again.  TT;

QuoteAnd I've always wondered about mainframe-tans and their ability to size-shift. I suppose I always figured a lot of older mainframe-tans never became supersized.

True, the infrastructure just wasn't around for a lot of the older Mainframe-tans, so there was no Guild and hence no need for such extravagance measures.  But once it was established, few Mainframe-tans ever went back to being "micloned" (sorry, still using that weird Macross word for "human-sized").

UNIX-sama is an example, since she joined the Guild briefly to learn more about their secrets (and yes, she devised a clever way to retain some of the knowledge, although that's a trade secret, 'kay?  `v').  So for about a week that no one really cared to remember, UNIX-sama was larger than life.  ^^

QuoteThat is such a crazy...but truly wonderful idea! I love it! You've managed to take a character I wasn't particularly fond of, and give her a very interesting side.

Now I really want to see z/OS-sama :3

Oh yeah, I said this elsewhere, but just to reiterate, I will bump up the height a little more.  I need more AWE, and 50 meters just doesn't cut it.  T___T

BTW, I don't think the idea is that crazy.  If you consider the old [and barbaric] aquarium disco shoes, the idea of embedding living things in your clothing is not new at all.  Plus I've seen pet stores and novelty stores sell [equally barbaric] glass balls encasing tiny fish, plants, crustaceans, algae and the like, the idea being that, despite the sealed nature of the ball, a "sustainable" cycle of life is still able to be maintained.  Though I call "bull biscuits" on that, some people might get a kick out of this miniature "biosphere" if they're still being sold.

What sets z/OS apart, though, is that she is keen on converting her entire self as a kind of living planet, obviously to enhance the feel of the goddess.  It's her only pleasure, as the life she set for herself is a little worse than austere.  -.-;

But as far as seeing her,.. well,...

You and me both.... ^3^

QuoteOh, I meant vibrant because I remembered when you were explaining of the many colorful ways she would entertain the down-trodden Multics-sama.

But yeah, you make her sound sweeter than a honeycomb stuffed with kilos sugar and doused in a vat of agave nectar. ^____^

I see what you mean....yeah, maybe she was a bit vibrant. Just not like...Ubuntu-san or Amiga-sama vibrant.

But I think a lot of her care of Multics-sama was wanting to see something come of her legacy. Realizing that she probably wouldn't be around too long, and never having the chance to have a real daughter, Multics-sama kinda took that place.

QuoteThat's it, let's down her Sauce right now and have ourselves a Vintage PARTY!!!!! ^V^

Hey, C-Chan, help me get this IBM 7094 outta storage so CTSS-sama's code will have something to run on.

Now now, not quite bangs...sorta...I think. Who the heck knows. And no, I'm still too meek to dye me hair a neon color. ^///^

QuoteNah, I think I'm destined to make it overly complex and burn out again. TT;

It's a mindset. You have to put yourself in a zen-like state of mind; you must consciously be trying to avoid making it too complex. You have to say to yourself, I have no ambitions for this picture. I am not going to make a great picture; this will start off simply and become greatness with time!

QuoteTrue, the infrastructure just wasn't around for a lot of the older Mainframe-tans, so there was no Guild and hence no need for such extravagance measures. Huh....I just watched an episode of Macross Plus. No giants...but, it is quite interesting. I seem to like older anime. ;)

Back on topic, Unix-sama was a giant for awhile! No wai! Is this backstory development or some kind of C-Chan fanservice? I kid, I kid.

QuoteOh yeah, I said this elsewhere, but just to reiterate, I will bump up the height a little more. I need more AWE, and 50 meters just doesn't cut it. T___T

Hell, where I live 5' 6'' or 5' 7'' cuts it. I'm shocked how many people think I'm "tall".  ;013

Ah, the disco 70s. Was there anything not barbaric about them? But yeah, I have seen those glass balls with the mini eco systems inside...I do admit I don't care much about the wellfare of sea monkeys and microscopic brine.

QuoteWhat sets z/OS apart, though, is that she is keen on converting her entire self as a kind of living planet, obviously to enhance the feel of the goddess. It's her only pleasure, as the life she set for herself is a little worse than austere. -.-;

Yes, that takes having a god complex to a whole new level!

ever thought about giving your style more curves to increase the sence of softness and femininity?  Ive noticed your drawings are often very angular.  Not saying its a bad thing, mind you. It definitly makes your style unique, I just think that it might work well for pictures where you want them to look more cute then bad ass.

I certainly see where you're coming from. I have also noticed my drawings are pretty angular, I've just always assumed this was a byproduct of working with vector graphics...it hasn't bothered me too greatly; though, I'm always open to input, maybe I'll try making my next drawing a bit more "soft".

Anyhoo....

CTSS-sama and ITS-san:

Because of the color scheme, I call it "Golden Days"

(I really have gotten into the habit of naming my pictures, huh?)

As for the meanings behind this picture: first, the color scheme. While my past Multics-sama pic was a bit on the bright side (very red), I wanted this one to be subdued and peaceful. Green and yellow tend to be very calming, peaceful colors, and I thought they fit these characters well.

CTSS-sama's dress is supposed to have a certain Chinese look to it; this idea came from a couple of famous for-fun CTSS programs, a computerized version of the I Ching, and a fortune cookie program. I also had some fun with patterns on their clothes. As you see, there's some scrolling and a spiral on CTSS-sama's dress; I know that the spiral is often interpreted to have a circle-of-life kind of meaning, although I admit that here it was purely coincidental. On her right hand you can just barely see a ring with a red and blue gem, this was kinda my nod to the "red and blue" machines which ran CTSS.

As for ITS-san, she's quite rebellious compared to CTSS-sama, and very much a tomboy. The guns I traced using pictures; I am unsure the exact model of each. On her holster you can see a dragon pattern, which is a reference to ITS' "dragons", background programs analogous to daemons.

That weird light on the upper right hand and lower left side is supposed to be a lens flare.

NejinOniwa

Hmmm~ ^~^
Firstly, good job, as always.
BUT. There's something about their chins/mouths...that sorta...disturbs me. I dunno what it is, but the ratio might be a bit off. It looks unnatural, somehow, but I can't point it out.

I know I'm not being very helpful, but it might be worth a look to fix it.

Aurora Borealis

BEAUTIFUL!! I was wondering what CTSS-sama would look like in color (I was expecting a lot of red and blue in reference to the red and blue machines, but the muted greens and browns work very well too and I think they suit her better anyways for main colors) and ITS-san looks awesome too- steampunk fashion for the win!! ;010

Hmmm....I can, kinda, sorta, see what you mean, I think their chins are a bit too sharp or something. I'm not to great at judging proportions and stuff in my own drawings, though...

I too was at one point planning on having a lot of red and blue references for CTSS-sama, but I guess her character took off a bit in my mind, so I didn't really feel I had to rely of those references. That, and, I thought the subtler colors would work better for her personality. I see you like steampunk too...ITS-san I tried to give a bit of a Western flare to. I'm unsure why, what with her being a native Massachusettsan and all, but I always seem to think of ITS-san as having a bit of an cowgirl side to her :P

QuoteI certainly see where you're coming from. I have also noticed my drawings are pretty angular, I've just always assumed this was a byproduct of working with vector graphics...it hasn't bothered me too greatly; though, I'm always open to input, maybe I'll try making my next drawing a bit more "soft".

I should probably point out that Japanese artwork is for the most part considered more angular and stylized, whereas Western artwork (or at least the older variety) is attributed as being more rounded and anatomically-correct.  The fact that the former has proven the most lucrative in the market can be attributed to many factors across different cultures -- but I imagine that, besides the issue of cost-effectiveness, angular styles can lead to more dyanmic fight sequences, stunning mecha, cute facial features and knee-slapping comedic details IF employed properly.

Naturally there's always room for the latter -- CLAMP uses angular styles for animation, but does some drool-inducing rounded work as well when it comes to stand-alone images:

Naturally, it all comes back to how much work you're willing to pour into one particular drawing.  It was my intention to give that Miggy/ME-chan picture a goregeous manga-quality look like the one posted above, but alas I only had the skill and the time to choose quantity over quality and not both.

You, on the other hand, have an almost magical knack for time management and you improve artistically by leaps and bounds.  So if you do decide to employ that technique in some of your drawings, I believe strongly you could pull it off -- if only, because you already did so before in some of your older drawings.  ^^

QuoteCTSS-sama and ITS-san.

And all things considered, I do absolutely adore your vector drawings.  ^__^

Even though they're clothing doesn't hold a candle to Multics-sama's in terms of individual detail, I would say both pictures are equally dripping in detail, since Golden Days has it more spread out between two characters and a background.  ^^

I enjoy the soothing vintage-like color scheme and the interesting lighting effects -- while I would have liked the curtain shadows to be a little darker, I understand this would have detracted too much from the subdued look you were trying to achieve here.  ^^

QuoteCTSS-sama's dress is supposed to have a certain Chinese look to it; this idea came from a couple of famous for-fun CTSS programs, a computerized version of the I Ching, and a fortune cookie program.

What can I say?  I'm head over heels over the Queen Great Grandmother.  ^^

Actually imaging this serene madame doing that funky dance to cheer up Multics-sama sends me through about several rounds of giggles.  ^.^

Considering she's one of the oldest [and hence wisest] OS-tans in known history, I'd say she definitely looks the part.  ^___^

First bit of appreciation goes to the hair, which carries with it subtle parallels to Multics-sama and the styles of many of the modern Unices (plus the red-hair trait would resurface later in the BSDs. ^^)

The dress is standard-issue Bella-chan greatness -- at this point, I'm convinced you have to work very very VERY hard to make any dress you draw look ugly.  This one succeeds in giving her an old-fashioned, elegant and humble look, while retaining some of its Chinese-inspired features and fine embroidery.  Forgot what the reference of the umbrella was (if any) -- but while the camera angle does give them a "meaty" appearance, her hands are anatomically-correct and very nicely positioned.  If not for the fact that this goes against her more down-to-earth character, I might have suggested gloves.  ^^

QuoteAs for ITS-san, she's quite rebellious compared to CTSS-sama, and very much a tomboy. The guns I traced using pictures; I am unsure the exact model of each. On her holster you can see a dragon pattern, which is a reference to ITS' "dragons", background programs analogous to daemons.

Ah, so THIS is Linux-sama's travel buddy for a while?  I can see now where gets that "calm coolness" about her.  ^__^

I know the original sketch predates your viewing of Kino's Journey (or rather is meant to depict her closer to the present day, when her hair gets a little longer), but this depiction of her does more closely resemble Kino (although thankfully omitting the "short" aspect...). ^^'

That being said, though, she does offer a very old-fashioned, no-nonsense, rugged sense of "coolness" about her (the same kind that makes a character like Indiana Jones very popular), and I would say she embodies beautifully the ancient, indominitable hacker culture that created so many of the innovations that we take for granted today.

Aside from the valiant pose, I also have to commend you on the stunning accessories.  From the dragon-emblazoned holster, to the small button chain, every part of her comes alive with spirit and charisma.  ^^

All in all, this is another excellent job.  ^^

QuoteBUT. There's something about their chins/mouths...that sorta...disturbs me. I dunno what it is, but the ratio might be a bit off. It looks unnatural, somehow, but I can't point it out.

Well I'll let Bella-san answer this one, but I think what Nejin means is tha the chins end in a single vector node, and their mouths are closer to them.  Mouth positions are primarily a matter of artistic preference, based on the individual artist's opinion of what looks more adult-like, as well as (in ITS-san's case) camera angle.  The higher the mouth level, the "cuter" the appearance.  The point, however, is not always standard Anime fare (some minor rounding in the chin is expected), so not sure if this was intentional.

Oh wau, I've never been called "magical" before :P

But I have always tried to maintain my own style...but I don't want to lent that get in the way of my "advancement". I think I have gotten this far as an artist by constantly trying to learn new techniques and use new styles...

I didn't exactly want these two to be dressed as elaborately as Multics-sama...CTSS and ITS were very simplistic compared to Multics ;)

QuoteI enjoy the soothing vintage-like color scheme and the interesting lighting effects -- while I would have liked the curtain shadows to be a little darker, I understand this would have detracted too much from the subdued look you were trying to achieve here. ^^

I almost made the background in black and white (like an old photo), but I thought the golden color would work better...

I regret to inform you I know of no funky dances that CTSS-sama would have taken part in. But I am happy you got such a laugh out of it :P

Yeah I nearly made her hair or eyes blue, but I didn't want to make it too cliched or whatever. And I guess you could say the BSDs and/or Solaris' inherited their red hair from her ;)

Nope, the umbrella was purely aesthetic. I do realized her hands look a bit off...I had a really tough time drawing them (I use references, but still draw them free-hand), but I figured they'd work well enough. I too considered gloves but didn't think they'd work...

Yeah I tried to make her a bit Kino-ish but not overly Kino-ish. I haven't thought about her height, but I suppose she'd be in the low 5' range...

Thank you! I did want to make ITS-san seem a bit more rugged and tomboyish than most of the -tans of her time, as ITS was a pretty radical system itself.

No, probably not intentional...I dunno if I'll go back and try to fix it, but I'll probably try to work on this in my next pictures.
