C-Chan

You caught me all tuckered out again.... XvX

But I'll be sure to supply some much deserved placeholder-swoonage, as I'm seeing great stuff here again.  ^____^

I do recall I'm still doing hand creams..... -v-

I used to be just like that as well.  ^___^

Windows was my primary system for at least half-the-90's (before then, I relied on an antiquated word processor), although I knew about Macs (and had fond memories of Oregon Trail), had a vague idea that an "Amiga" existed (although i assumed it was mainly a game system, which it sorta kinda was too), and definitely worked as much on DOS as the GUI systems.  (3.1-sama, 95-tan and Hacchan had a habit of dying every so often)

Around 1999 a hacker friend helped me learn more and more about the many problems with Windows.  Granted we still had to use it (cause we didn't like Macs either, even though we used them on occasion), it at least set the precedent for experimentation with alternatives.  He eventually got a hold of an old Linux distro, although only he had the time to dual boot and play around with it.  He mentioned it was alright, but definitely not there yet -- although the fact that he had his eyes set on BeOS instead might've raised the bar to high.

Anyway, that did kindle some interest, but still I kept slugging away with Windows due to time constraints -- even though I eventually suffered one of the worst hard drive crashes ever that wiped out almost a year's worth of my game mods and art.  -___-

A few years ago, another tech friend of mine lent me some SUSE CDs since it was the big thing at the itme.  I yearned to try it, but alas... no time and no spare computers.  It wasn't a LiveCD, so I didn't DARE replace the XP install on my very expensive laptop.  O__O

Not but a few months prior to my coming here, though, a friend's computer died and I inherited it for cheap.  Having to replace the hard drive, I figured I'd finally give this Linux thing a chance.  So I installed SUSE on it, but sadly had to struggle with its drunken hardware detection (for a long while I didn't have an operable mouse, MP3 music or DVD playback, etc).  It was only after I came here and immersed myself in the wild and rich OS world that I started getting more and more curious of that SUSE machine lying around.  version 10 was marginally better, so at least I was able to do more and more with it (including,... *GASP* ... whole forum posts! O___O)

However, it wasn't until I finally braved a Xubuntu install (which was a helluva lot kinder to the old system specs) that I finally got a taste of what a TRULY modern Linux distro could be.  No longer didn't Linux seem like an inferior Desktop OS than XP -- for once, I had hope that I could even install it on my new primary machine!

And so around December, off Kubuntu went,.... marching proudly into my primary machine.  I was happy,... but not 100% happy, so I went distro-hopping for a while.

Yap yap, blah blah,... eventually found PCLOS-sama, loved it, stayed with it, put it on everything else, can't wait to install it on my Eeepc-tan.... the rest is history.  ^___^

In short, all this OS-tan thing helped A LOT, which is why this has been one of my more lucrative hobbies.  ^.^

I've always wondered (since you started off drawing Zenwalk-tan, TinfoilHat-tan and other distro-tans) if perhaps you were in the same boat as well.  ^___^

QuoteHere's beta-ish Ubuntu-sama!!!

What else can I say?  She is looking very gorgeous, and the extra detail (e.g., hat and feathers) plus the shading you've added are truly piling on the sex appeal.  ^___^
While I respect the other two Ubuntu-tan designs, I was definitely troubled by the overuse of "wildness" (after all, South Africa is not a backward country), and your efforts to make her look more down-to-earth were always a welcomed pace.  But this design, though, is your definite tour de force -- incorporating all the elements thus far presented, in presenting them in one fantastically elegant presentation that also benefits from the crisp, clean Anime style!!

To say this is my favorite Ubuntu-tan of all -- and a definite candidate for her permanent look -- would be the understatement of the century!  ^0^

QuoteAnd a closeup of her eyes/face:

It's definitely evident that you've grown infinitely better with Inkscape, as the eyes have that characteristic Anime form to them, yet incorporate your characteristic glossy style that I've always said give your drawings that CLAMP like feel to them.
You're right to feel proud of your accomplishments!  ^v^

QuoteAnd while we're at it, a closeup of my avi:

Dynamite!  Linux-sama is reborn!  ^V^
I do get wonder if the lower lids of her eyes should be arching like that (in half-circles) rather than plateuing closer towards her nose (giving her a definitive cat-like look).  Still, everything else is simply perfect and expertly drawn (I'm wondering if I should even draw you a VMS-tan for your future avi, since it might end up looking like crap by comparison.... ^__^).

Extra kudos go to your magnificent hair highlights, especially the ones on her left side which, if I'm not mistaken, have a certain 4-component make-up that gives it an enticing glow.  ^.^

QuoteI've sorta been meaning to try out Open Office on Windows...

It's literally the same thing as the Linux version,... except that it uses an antiquated Office 97 feel rather than whatever interface theme the Linux distro in question uses.

QuoteLOL!

But this may also be a prime time for the ol' microkernel V. monolithic kernel debate, the classic Windows doppleganger argument, etc...

......

Okay, let me rephrase that.... -v-

QuoteLet alone Inferno-chan...she's unwelcome cause she'd melt all those ice sculptures :P

But forms such cute Inanimates with them....  ^.^

QuoteOS9-tan would probably pass, least till she started ragging on the Unixes for being too "big and complicated"...

Though my character always died before I'd get to Oregon XD

Ubuntu seems to have just about everything I'd want in an OS, but unfortunately I'd never do a dual boot because:

a) I have a TON and a half of important documents, and I don't trust backups XD

b) more importantly, while under warranty I'm not allowed to install any other OSs...

Ubuntu seems very polished and refined, so I made the -tan as such ;)
Though I guess the Juzo-kun version is good for a battle-ready Ubuntu-san, but I doubt she'd battle much...

Now, Puppy-chan, on the other hand, is wild...:P

QuoteIt's definitely evident that you've grown infinitely better with Inkscape, as the eyes have that characteristic Anime form to them, yet incorporate your characteristic glossy style that I've always said give your drawings that CLAMP like feel to them.

I had an old sketch for...gasp...NT-tan in my computer, so I used that as a guide for the face and eyes. I sorta used Juzo-kun's design for the helmet, too...but all the rest I did on my own...

As for the VMS avi, I'd really like to see your take on her :D Only if it wouldn't displace a drawing that's been waiting to be finished, though...

And the highlights are made of 2 paths (darker underneath, white on top)...

Exactly what I was thinking XD

I was recently researching this, but the fact that so many Unix-like systems were made in foreign countries (Russia, especially), makes me think there'd have to be several-dozen translators, too!

QuoteWow. Even that never happened to me...

But it was a HD crash...so...I guess it was kinda not Windows fault...?

Nope,... definitely a symptom of pure, unequivocable WinRot.  ^__^
Besides,... the system HARDLY gets you into the habit of backing things up or learning good computer stewardship (it will if you fork over the cash, though).  Then, as in now, DAU's help drive the industry, which is why the Windows EULA's so conveniently wash themselves of responsibility for any inevitable disasters.  ^^;

Speaking of which, I've been bouncing around the idea of supplying random vector shapes available to download from our SVG collection that could be reused in other drawings.  Mostly Pattern Fills of course, maybe some unique details like fire, lights, or weapons.  Perhaps even heads and eyes, or unique one-shot designs such as waving flags or clouds that could be helpful to anyone experimenting with Inkscape, You had me think about the idea again.  ^__^

So in reality, there are no baby pictures,... but what stops OS-tans in the 21st century from splicing a few together for laughs?!  ^____^

Quote(and with great grandma-san to protect them, we might seen upsurge in imputence against UNIX-sama -- heaven forbid that thought! >v<)

I could see where VMS-san would be a great friend of the revived Multics-sama!

After all, they both have wildly popular children, who have taken away a certain amount of their livelihood. They are somewhat unknown themselves, compared to their decedents. QuoteHmmm...I guess I always assumed HD crashes were the product of old age (or in the case of laptops, taking a fall...)

Yeah, an OS can go a long way towards wrecking hardware.  ^___^
For example, if you ever wondered why there is no defragging in Linux, here's a nice and simple explanation of how FAT32 and NTFS works vs. a journaled file system:

http://geekblog.oneandoneis2.org/index.php/2006/08/17/why_doesn_t_linux_need_defragmenting

QuoteOut of necessity, as I have no eye for scale or shape when drawing on the computer : \ Plus I think I'll always be best at hand-drawing...

I'm a bit of a neat freak, so I can't really stand so much erasing (inevitable with my unsteady hand).  So that's why I'm hedging my bets on a the TouchMac being my ideal drawing solution, as I can [theoretically] still maintain the precision of CG coupled with the flexibiility of hand-drawing.  ^^

QuoteThat is a neat idea!

Course, the question is, will anyone ever use thoose graphics?  ^^;
In any event, I can load up at least all the graphic samples I've used in my tutorial, including that line-drawn Kagami-tan.

QuoteBella blink-and-you'll-miss-it tutorial

HAHA!!!  ^V^
That's brilliant!  ^^
But you know what?  That's also the 4-path approach.  ^__~
(I include the two paths you used to do the hair's base color and shading)

QuoteLOL!  I guess that group would include RedFlagLinux-tan?

Naturally.  ^>^

QuoteAnd the Goddess knows some Mandarin! And can (kinda sorta) shape-shift (to some extent)! What doesn't her Highness know!

If an OS-tans life were measured in something loosely equivalent to dog years, then surely a 40 year old OS-tan has centuries of experience in all matter of useful things.  ^___^
And some useless ones too...., ^.^;

QuoteAnd yes, I'd say translating all of Wikipedia is just punishment for Firefox-ko XD

Plus I heard the Hungarian language is notoriously difficult to work with.  ^_____^

QuoteOkay...I'm -4! Yippee!

YATTA!!!!  ^V^
That means you will just get punished gently.  ^.^
I envy you, Bella-dono.  I got a -12 in a similar test, so.... um..........  ^____^;

QuoteI could see where VMS-san would be a great friend of the revived Multics-sama!

*snaps hoof*  You got it!  ^.^
As you can tell, Open Source really helps turn the tide of power, and literally change the course of history.  So definitely if MULTICS-sama were to regain a foothold anew in the world of mainstream computing, then you can imagine things are bound to get......., very very weird very quickly. ^___^

(what would we call any daughters or clones of the newly open-sourced MULTICS-sama?  It just plays with your head.... @@)

QuoteAdmit it...Unix was the original gaming OS! Unix-sama was born to game!

*take that, Windows-tans :P*

Which comes to show you that today's gamers have absolutely NO respect for their elders.  ^^
Hell, they barely have any respect for the OS that has kept them happy for well over 7 years (XP).  Oh, what fickle brats.  ^,^

Bella

So today I got a lot of the vector sketch done on that *nix pic...but I kinda hit the wall on it and got bored : | So now I must wait for my vector steam to return XD

QuoteYeah, an OS can go a long way towards wrecking hardware. ^___^
For example, if you ever wondered why there is no defragging in Linux, here's a nice and simple explanation of how FAT32 and NTFS works vs. a journaled file system:

http://geekblog.oneandoneis2.org/index.php/2006/08/17/why_doesn_t_linux_need_defragmenting

That's really interesting! I've always wondered why Linux doesn't use defragmentation...

QuoteI'm a bit of a neat freak, so I can't really stand so much erasing (inevitable with my unsteady hand). So that's why I'm hedging my bets on a the TouchMac being my ideal drawing solution, as I can [theoretically] still maintain the precision of CG coupled with the flexibiility of hand-drawing. ^^

I think that Mac may just come very soon :D

I actually wonder why Apple hasn't made a tablet Mac yet... : / Seems to be the one area where M$ has had been ahead of Apple artistically...

QuoteCourse, the question is, will anyone ever use thoose graphics? ^^;
In any event, I can load up at least all the graphic samples I've used in my tutorial, including that line-drawn Kagami-tan.

That's always the question ;) But I guess it wouldn't hurt to Open sauce those graphics...

There is a color light show going on, though, so don't forget to shade the back of her hair in red, green, blue, etc.  ^____^

IRIX-san:  I see she's still fairly roughly vector-sketched, so I reckon you're still thinking up elements of her design.  Still, it's looking great and futuristic so far, and indeed she'd probably have that almost Haruhi-like obsession with putting on some unique hair-style each day (here, quintuple pigtails it seems).

The light show, though, does not seem to go well with white, so hope you're planning to transpose this on a darker background.  ^.^

Cute as a button, small and pink,.. nuff said. ^__^
Funny how you and I also envision Virus-tans and not being entirely full height (at least not always).  I picture everyone (except Viru-sama herself) as being rather pint-sized.

SCO-tan:  Bratty,... but also kinda, sorta reminds me of hacchan for some odd reason that's, perhaps, not altogether inappropriate.  ^.^
Drapery is very good here too, although her left leg needs a little bit more curvature.

Solaris-sama:  Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous,... and mucho kudos to the elaborate necklace and the elegant dress that's to die for.  ^__^
On the other hand,... the whole appearance just screams:  "Shower ME, not that damn penguin woman, with attention!".  ^v^

Puppy-chan:  Aha!  So THAT'S her default look.  ^__^
My only reference was your old pic with her and AROS-chan, and an old sketch of her with hacchan, so I had no idea I chose the wrong-colored blonde hair, or that she has a red bow instead of a blue scrunchie holding up her ponytail.  Sorry.  ^^;

But the rest I guess I got okay, and certainly we're talking WAY different clothing scenarios.  ^____^

Cute as a button here too and excellent job with the difficulty draping here as that's not an easy position to work with.  The body for the most part is ready for shading, except for her left arm and leg which still need some adjustment.  The width of her right shoulder could be contracted just a little bit further (just like you did with Linux-sama and Solaris-sama) just so it has that angle shot appearance.

Tree:  phenomenal job with the detail thus far.  ^__^
See if maybe you can use a Pattern Fill or two to add a prickly pine needle effect.  ^.^

(Yes I have the MP3 if anyone wants it just ask. I also have the complete soundtracks to Gex 2 enter the gecko and Gex 3)

I'm unfamiliar with the song your talking about :(

But yeah, I was a bit inspired with IRIX-tan by a recent TSO concert I went to:

They play a lot of awesome Christmas songs, and put on one of the most incredible light shows ever!

Great job on that Xmas picture so far! I've got a few things to say...

1. Slackware-tan looks really cool with her hair down!

2. I've wondered if SCO-tan is permanently confined to crutches.

3. I especially like IRIX-tan and her crazy lightshows! :D

4. If you are going to add in one of the OSX-tans, may I suggest adding in Panther-tan? Or a Jaguar-tan would be good too because you haven't drawn either of them yet. But then again, either Leopard-tan or Rhapsody-tan would probably seem like the best candidate of the OSX-tans for the picture because Leopard-tan would have the best appreciation for IRIX-tan's crazy lightshows and Rhapsody-tan hands out bottles of apple cider... or eggnog! :D
