QuoteXD...see how I made VMS a sorta survivalist-type? A joke about how VMS is touted as disaster-proof....not sure what that means, but I should probably figure out how to work that aspect into the -tan...

Fufufu,... well the camo fatigues and semi-automatic were kind of a dead-giveaway.  ^.^'

QuoteDid you see that on Yahoo, too? I actually remember seeing on this some time back last summer...

Still no Linux dude/girl....They need representation!

Guilty as charged!  i actually saw that yesterday on my friend's Mac, after I had successfully restored internet service.  We had a laugh about the first couple of minutes,... after that,..... it was just plain freaky.  0__0'

LOL!

Yeah, the hot tub part was... o_o

Anyhow, here's a screenshot of my latest RSTS-tan:

I'm also working on a picture with the *official DEC uniform*, but I dunno what the colors should be...red and white were the colors on the DEC logo, but those are pretty....strong colors...

So I'm not sure if I should make the actual uniform like a reddish-gray color with red and white accents or what. Any help would be appreciated.

QuoteYeah, the hot tub part was...

*C-chan sets brain on fire*

Let us never speak of it again.  ^___^

*runs around screaming maniacally*

QuoteAnyhow, here's a screenshot of my latest RSTS-tan:

Okay!  Well first, some reference material:

Original vector sketch:

Revised preconcept sketch:

Right off the bat I notice a HUGE improvement over the original vector sketch.  Whereas the previous bulldog look made her look a bit juvenile and modern for a system of her age, the new look (complete with long hair and stern expression) grants her the level of maturity and fierceness I know you're after.  ^___^

The groundwork is set for an excellent picture!  ^v^
However, just want to point out now that her neck is sloping up outward instead of inward.  If you remember my observations about the UNIX-sama sketch you PM'd to me shortly before your photography tour, I think they apply here too to an extent.

Fufufu,.... not to worry.  Combining red and white in uniforms may not be as unfashionable as you make it sound.  ^___^

Not sure if mixing and matching red and white would be better than having one component (like the coat) be red and some other color (black? or this reddish grey?), whilte another component (such as an undershirt, or skirt/pants) feature all the white.

Sadly, you know I'm a bit of a fashion disaster, so this may be the extent of my assistance.... at least for now.  ^.^;

Red and white should be fine for a uniform.  As C-chan touched on, if you look at pictures of the British redcoats from the time of the 1780's you will see ton's of bright white and red working together, brilliantly.
From the look you have going, you could even take a peak at Dante, from Devil May Cry.  I don't think it's exactly the white/red theme your talking about, but it may be encouraging or helpful all the same.

Thanks! Yeah, the first one seemed a little to youthful, I agree. I'll have to fix that...

Though lately I've kinda run out of vectorizing steam (yeah, I run on steam :P), so I've mostly been sketching.

I've started drawing another holiday sketch...it's not the Mac one, though, and I ain't saying what the group is. Okay, it's one of my favorite OS-tan groups. And it's not the DECs or the NT family, either, one of my other favorites.

Not to mention this Amiga-sama drawing I may do, along with a couple of other characters from the Binteji Renmei. Another favorite group of OS-tans...(I admit I like them all!)

And I still want to do a Multics-sama picture. I just can't decide if I should draw (or I should say vectorize/color) ol' Multics-sama, or Open Sourceress Multics-sama.

QuoteThanks! Yeah, the first one seemed a little to youthful, I agree. I'll have to fix that...

You'll HAVE to fix it, or you FIXED it?  ^___^

QuoteThough lately I've kinda run out of vectorizing steam (yeah, I run on steam :P), so I've mostly been sketching.

Oh no!  Bella-san's running out of steam!! No!!  ^0^
Well no worries, though,... at least you tried it and got a lot of beautiful stuff generated.  ^___^

*recalls UNIX-sama meeting and Leopard-chan chasing after iPhone-tan*

It's a shame Miggy-chan's a peacemaker,... otherwise, I would've loved to have added her into our club.  ^.^

QuoteAnd I still want to do a Multics-sama picture. I just can't decide if I should draw (or I should say vectorize/color) ol' Multics-sama, or Open Sourceress Multics-sama.

Well you already have the Multics-sama of Yore sketched....

So my advice is to just finish that one first.  ^.^

Bella

QuoteYou'll HAVE to fix it, or you FIXED it? ^___^

I'll get around to it : \

QuoteOh no! Bella-san's running out of steam!! No!! ^0^

Meh. Steam's a renewable resource :P

Quote*Nix? ^__^

*giddy giggle*

I refuse to say!

*tsk tsk*

QuoteIt's a shame Miggy-chan's a peacemaker,... otherwise, I would've loved to have added her into our club. ^.^

Oh, I nearly suggested we add "Amigans" into our club name ;)

Now that I think about it, OS/2ers would have been a good addition, too....

: | Oh well....

QuoteSo my advice is to just finish that one first. ^.^

That's all well and good, but right now I just thought of a great Mac pun I could capitalize on! Boot Camp!

*imagines Tiger-tan and Leopard-tan in strangely frilly camouflage dresses...*

But then again, I kinda wanted to do that other picture. I guess compared to all the Sasekos running about, a few more Leopards and Tiger-tans won't hurt ;)

Yes, I have a serious lack of focus O__<

But just to prove I can get something accomplished, here's a few sketches that have been lying around...

There's young VMS-sama on the left...I made her outfit sorta militariesqe with a slightly cutesy look to it...course, she would soon abandon all cutesiness in favor of working on her fighting ability...

And to the left is Puma-chan! But not just any old Puma-chan, gothic lolita Puma-chan!

I dunno if the hat gives it away, but this was going to go in that *far off holiday* pic I was working on...

Oddly pirate-ish looking Ubuntu-san! I give you this is lieu of Solaris-tan, which I was at a loss for regrettably...Kinda taking Siya's advice, I just threw together a bunch of different styles and made them work together and this is the end result ;)

I kinda made her look a bit flirty and sweet cause I think Ubuntu is like the Linux equivalent of XP (YES, I do know technically LinuxXP and Linspire are, but I mean in terms of number of fans, user friendliness, clean good looks, etc)

C-Chan

QuoteI'll get around to it : \

No, what I meant to say was that you're saying you're going to fix it (future tense) when in fact you technically already fixed it (present tense) with your latest RSTS-tan.  So as far as that's concerned, you're done.  ^^

Quote
Oh, I nearly suggested we add "Amigans" into our club name

Now that I think about it, OS/2ers would have been a good addition, too....

: | Oh well.... /

Well okay,... if it does prove popular, maybe we could add Amigans and OS/2 users in there eventually.  ^___^
(or for that matter, VMS users)

Pretty soon, the logo's gonna look "Brady Bunchish" -- not sure if the Vista flag could take any more abuse.  Fufufu... ^.^

QuoteThat's all well and good, but right now I just thought of a great Mac pun I could capitalize on! Boot Camp!

I'm game for frilly camouflaged dresses.  'v'

QuoteYes, I have a serious lack of focus O__<

Would that make you my Sister-in-Arms then?  ^___<

QuoteThere's young VMS-sama on the left...I made her outfit sorta militariesqe with a slightly cutesy look to it...course, she would soon abandon all cutesiness in favor of working on her fighting ability...

OMG!!  TRES CUTE and very NT-like!!!  ^_____^
She reminds me a little of a nurse, though, but it's likely just because there's no color yet.  ^^

QuoteAnd to the left is Puma-chan! But not just any old Puma-chan, gothic lolita Puma-chan!

PU-CHAN!!!!!!!!!!!
PU-CHAN!!!!!!!!!!!
PU-CHAN!!!!!!!!!!!
PU-CHAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  ;^0^;

Gin-sama ain't got nothing on Loli-Goth Pu!!  Ph34r the p0w3r of the PU!!!!!!!!!!  `v'

QuoteI dunno if the hat gives it away, but this was going to go in that *far off holiday* pic I was working on...

I'm actually having trouble reading what it says on the hat.  ^^'
Either that, or I'm too busy drooling over her.  ^v^'

QuoteOddly pirate-ish looking Ubuntu-san! I give you this is lieu of Solaris-tan, which I was at a loss for regrettably...Kinda taking Siya's advice, I just threw together a bunch of different styles and made them work together and this is the end result

Fufu... no worries,... eventually I'll have to draw Solaris-tan in her battle suit, so I'll see if I can put my money where my mouth is.  ^^

You say she's a pirate, but with THAT dress Ubuntu-san seems more ready to go to a ball!  ^.^
Very very very very lovely and elegant design you created, but unless the coloring will help, not sure if it matches your intended purpose.  Not necessarily that that's a bad thing, though.  ^^

QuoteI kinda made her look a bit flirty and sweet cause I think Ubuntu is like the Linux equivalent of XP (YES, I do know technically LinuxXP and Linspire are, but I mean in terms of number of fans, user friendliness, clean good looks, etc)

Ubuntu-san definitely should ooze with sweetness.  ^__^

But seriously, how many OS/2ers or VMS Bigots (<as they like to be called XD) do we have here?

I mean to say, aside from those who are fans of VMS and OS/2 vicariously though their NT-based OS ;)

QuoteI'm game for frilly camouflaged dresses. 'v'

Whooohoo!

QuoteWould that make you my Sister-in-Arms then? ^___<

LOL...No, I do believe you have much better focus than I....

I have a serious problem with doing half a vector sketch and then giving up on it : | I really have to be motivated to finish it...

QuoteOMG!! TRES CUTE and very NT-like!!! ^_____^
She reminds me a little of a nurse, though, but it's likely just because there's no color yet. ^^

I actually wanted it to look like a sort of utilitarian, "cadet outfit" that the helpers (or maybe some of the older DEC-tans) fixed up into a cute little dress for the newbie...along with a pair of boot-style Mary Jane shoes. I dunno if they came out so well, though...

After all, those DEC folks were very resourceful ;)

QuoteGin-sama ain't got nothing on Loli-Goth Pu!! Ph34r the p0w3r of the PU!!!!!!!!!! `v'

No, I wasn't really going for a pirate look...I guess the corset and her hairstyle sorta gave me that feeling...

The coloring, in contrast to the very busy design on the dress, I'm intending to be very subtle and earth-toned, with some bright red, yellow and orange accents, of course...

QuoteUbuntu-san definitely should ooze with sweetness. ^__^

Lawl....

I guess I'm a bit PO'd by that link to the other site about if Mac, Unix and Windows were women :P

Though the Windows one sorta fit a non-NT Windows to a tee, so it can be forgiven XD

As for Ubuntu-san, I had a funny thought that every time she encounters a Windows-tan, she tries to get them to befriend her open source program buddies (cause when you load the liveCD, a list of open source Windows programs that can be installed comes up)...

I've always seen her as quite peaceful with most...

Bella

So I'm pretty tired, as we got up at, like, three in the morning last night to go to a Black Friday sale at a department store. The funniest thing happened, though, while I was waiting outside for an hour in the 20 degree weather...Put simply, I believe, technologically, there are several groups in my home state:

Mac Evangelists, people who have Macs but also use PCs, people who will, have, or are currently using Linux, people who have installed Linux onto a old machine, and people who love Windows XP.

So, we're all lined up,  talking with each other to keep ourselves busy till they open the store doors. This older guy, probably in his 60's, starts talking with my family.

Meanwhile, the people behind me are having a spirited discussion...about Windows Vista...and, well, how much they dislikes it.

Then the guy ahead of us, the older guy, starts talking about the same thing. Long story short, in less than five minutes we're all talking about how great XP is and how eerily accurate those new Mac ads are--This woman was saying how her co-worker had to get a new printer because the old one just wouldn't work with his computer O____O

So then, the topic turns to Linux. The guy starts with a story, about his wife's Windows 98 machine...which finally crashed and burned one day. So, what does he do but...you guessed it...install Linux onto it! I'm like, whoa, I did the same thing! So we start talking about the gPCs and stuff...

And about ten seconds before the store doors open, he mentions he worked on mainframes ;)

O___o

Small world, eh?

Anyhow, my latest vector sketch:

Added after a while

A sketch for that holiday pic I mentioned...

*gasp* It's a *nix-tan pic! Who'd of thought that?

I should really explain what's going on...as we know, Unix-sama carries a aluminum staff. Well, there just happens to be a pseudo-holiday called Festivus:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festivus

...Where the celebration is centered around an aluminum rod. So...I just kinda put the two together ;)

Linux-sama, SCO-tan, Solaris-tan and Puppy-chan are around the tree; Slackware-chan is agreeing with Unix-sama (of course). In the background I drew IRIX-tan, putting on a holiday light show...just about everyone is ignoring her except for PCLOS-tan....XD

C-Chan

Wow!  There's chock full of stuff to reply to here.  ^^

Give me a sec while I finish swooning.  -v-

# of OS/2ers that have appeared at OSC:  1  [A-chain-san,... our only Japanese artist to date... ^.^)

# of VMS Bigots that have appeared at OSC:  0.5 (Bella-san,... in progress anyway... ^v^)

I still believe I annoyed you to death with that one, so the guilt still lingers.  ^___^;

Yeah, when I first saw that at work, I thought that was very nice of Canonical to do that.  ^^
Course,... it does come at a price,... including Open Source Windows programs means less space available for preinstalled applications in the LiveCD.  ^^;

Something like Knoppix, for example, just autoruns a website instead.

QuoteI've always seen her as quite peaceful with most...

Compassionate too.  ^^

As you say, small world!  ^.^

Still,... I'm sure it must've made you feel great to participate so expertly in this kind of discussion.  Did it surprise any of these people (especially the older guy) that you were fairly well-versed with Linux, Unix, mainframes and such?  Did you mention MULTICS by any chance?  Or all the drawings we do?

QuoteAnyhow, my latest vector sketch:

Your trademark expertise with drapery really shows its mark here, as does your effective use of frills.  ^___^
Color scheme is also something to be expected from a great fashion designer in the making, although I should ask if those shoulderless sleeves are meant to give her non-battle attire a hint of an "XP Pro-tan" look (especially since you said she reminds you of her).  ^.^

This is definitely funnier if you skim through the Wiki article at least.  ^_______^
Poor girls,... spending all that time setting up the tree, just to have it invite UNIX-sama's seal of disapproval.  ^.^

In any event, this sketch is definitely what I've come to expect from your work,... witty, cute, ingeniuous and above all, multifaceted!  ^v^

UNIX-sama is looking even cooler than she normally does,... I have to say her design is becoming quite natural to you.

Slackware-tan just makes a brief cameo appearance, so there's not much tos ay other than that she really does seem like a bit of a suck-up.  ^.^

Linux-sama is looking even more and more elegant with each drawing,... you really get the sense that she ages very well, like a fine wine.  ^____^

IRIX-tan makes a brief cameo appearance, and you definitely got the hint that her preconcept SCREAMS for a futuristic visor thing of sorts.  ^.^

PCLOS-tan doesn't get much of a cameo either, but still looks adorable facefaulting.  ^^

Solaris-sama is looking unusually cheerful, but I detect a small hint of... "imitation"... of the girl standing not but three feet away from her.  ^.^

SCO-tan looks as bratty as ever, no doubt put in Xmas detail against her will (or she might've not abandoned the opportunity to lob a few more accusations against Linux-sama, sore loser that she is).  ^________^

Puppy-chan, though, is absolutely OOZING with major cute factor.  ^v^

Her size, face, ears, dress, expression,... simply priceless!  ^___^

Nah, the discussion didn't get quite that deep...It seems when I talking with someone for the first time, I try to listen to what they have to say. I hate coming off like a know-it-all or something ;)

Oddly, though, nobody's ever surprised to hear I use Linux...like I said before, I think half of the state has at some point XD

She still comes off a bit pirate-ish to me, though ;) Not that it's a bad thing hehee...

QuoteBWAHAHA!!!!!! ^V^
This is definitely funnier if you skim through the Wiki article at least. ^_______^

And did you read some of the rituals of Festivus? Somehow I think they'd go over big in the Unix family...Like the Airing of Grievances...It consists of lashing out at others and the world about how one has been disappointed in the past year...

SCO-tan could certainly add some spice to that; What with all the lawsuits/riots/injuries/attempted killings/etc perpetrated by half of the family against her and vice versa...

QuotePoor girls,... spending all that time setting up the tree, just to have it invite UNIX-sama's seal of disapproval. ^.^

Unix-sama doesn't have time for lights and garland! Keep it simple! :P

QuoteUNIX-sama is looking even cooler than she normally does,... I have to say her design is becoming quite natural to you.

I tried to make her look a little more well dressed and elegant, because it's the holidays! It's the time of year that family and friends she would never see at any other time come out of the woodwork!

I a bit peeved, though, that I cannot draw two consecutive Linux-samas that look the same XD

QuoteSCO-tan looks as bratty as ever, no doubt put in Xmas detail against her will (or she might've not abandoned the opportunity to lob a few more accusations against Linux-sama, sore loser that she is). ^________^

Actually, now that I recall, their Freedom Toasters also "sell" CDs filled with Open Source software.

Guess the reasoning behind it is the same -- besides, if you get used to Firefox, Pidgin, Open Office, GIMP, GnuCash, Inkscape, etc in Windows, then there's less stuff to hold you back in case you decide to try something new.  ^^

QuoteNah, the discussion didn't get quite that deep...It seems when I talking with someone for the first time, I try to listen to what they have to say. I hate coming off like a know-it-all or something

Oddly, though, nobody's ever surprised to hear I use Linux...like I said before, I think half of the state has at some point XD

Well that sounds like paradise to me.  ^^
Around where I live, work and travel, it's very rare to have anyone think about technical issues to begin with, let alone know about Linux.  So at least as far as those matters are concerned I end up doing most of the talking.  ^^;

QuoteYes, the sleeves are XP-tan inspired.

She still comes off a bit pirate-ish to me, though Not that it's a bad thing hehee...

Hot damn!  If pirates look like her, then cut off my left leg and buy me a parrot!  *v*

QuoteAnd did you read some of the rituals of Festivus? Somehow I think they'd go over big in the Unix family...Like the Airing of Grievances...It consists of lashing out at others and the world about how one has been disappointed in the past year...

SCO-tan could certainly add some spice to that; What with all the lawsuits/riots/injuries/attempted killings/etc perpetrated by half of the family against her and vice versa...

OMG, that sounds... riot-inducing.  ^v^;

Great time for Solaris-sama to lash out at Linux-sama for calling her "Indiana" line of clothing,...... "uninspiring".  ^^

QuoteI tried to make her look a little more well dressed and elegant, because it's the holidays! It's the time of year that family and friends she would never see at any other time come out of the woodwork!

*imagines BSD-based OS X catgirls showing up on doorstep with...heehee....fruitcake*

Like I said before,... riot-inducing.  ^V^;

*imagines Plan 9-tan and FreeB-chan performing their traditional party-crashing*

*imagines OS-9-tan trying to slip in pretending to be one of the family*

You do realize that pooling together every known Unix and Linux variant (and respective knock-offs) is not only a recipe for disaster,... but could also violate the Occupancy laws of most stadiums.  @____@;

QuoteI have no idea how I'm to work this in, but I had the thought the paper chain she's dressing the tree with is made of her old lawsuit documents and court orders XD

Oh that's easy.  ^___^
Just type out any old nonsense in legalese, convert to a path, then rotate/scale/skew it so that they fit in any part of the chain that's face-up.  ^.^

QuoteI tried to make her look a little intimidated by her seniors  Especially Unix-sama.

*hugs Puppy-tan and bawls*

GAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!  Poor Puppy-chan!!!!!  ^0^

Don't worry, cutie!  The C-chan is here to protect you!  ^-^

Now that I've achieved GNU/Linux rank...

Tales from a Former DAU: Linux edition
For years, Windows was the only OS I worked with, the only one I ever gave any interest to. And it was the only one I knew by name. The first time, however, that I wondered about what else was out there was a while ago, four or five years if it was a day.
I saw an IBM commercial ( http://youtube.com/watch?v=EwL0G9wK8j4 ) where they spoke of a system called "Linux"; I thought it was quite an odd ad, but it made me wonder exactly what this mysterious Linux was.
Of course, MS Encarta Encyclopedia is no place to research competing OSs; it gave me a strange hint that it was a free OS originating in Finland, but really nothing more. My interest went dormant for a long while; it was some time last winter (the previous winter working a bit with OS X showed me the world outside of Windows), that I started to research Linux, and started to learn of it's interesting history and "exotic properties", like virus resistance, stability, and it's inner workings being open to the public. The fact that many of these OS's were developed by individuals and groups for the betterment of computing and weren't driven by money-hungry corporations greatly intrigued me, as well.

Of course, I was far to afraid to give it a try; for a lack of knowing how, and for the fact that my family was a variable den of Windows Zealots (though it should be noted they have since had major epiphanies, and are now more akin to Apple fans XD).
The first time I gave the notion of running Linux was on our old Win98 machine, an old computer than had been sitting idle in our basement, unused for three years.
After a lot of help from our incredible forum members here, I finally got Puppy Linux up and running on it, and later Zenwalk. Afterward I tried running various OSs on my laptop, and have since settled with running Ubuntu on a VM. Actually, I'm writing from Ubuntu right now.

So here's to Linux, the second OS I ever learned of, the second I ever used at any extent!

Oh yeah, and here's some artwork...

Here's beta-ish Ubuntu-sama!!!

And a closeup of her eyes/face:

And while we're at it, a closeup of my avi:

QuoteHe was only around intermittently for about three weeks. H-artist though, but great guy and a genius of OS/2. The link to his site should be in our Wiki links (NSFW, though). ^___^'

O___o

Ooookkay....

I've sorta been meaning to try out Open Office on Windows...

That's odd...just about everyone I know has heard of Linux, even if it's only just as "that free OS".

QuoteHot damn! If pirates look like her, then cut off my left leg and buy me a parrot! *v*

*gets saw*

Kinfolk! We's having Ham hock t'night!

Just kidding, just kidding!

LOL!

But this may also be a prime time for the ol' microkernel V. monolithic kernel debate, the classic Windows doppleganger argument, etc...

Well they probably wouldn't mind Plan9 and FreeB-tan if they didn't keep trying to necromance/eat everything in sight XD

Let alone Inferno-chan...she's unwelcome cause she'd melt all those ice sculptures :P

OS9-tan would probably pass, least till she started ragging on the Unixes for being too "big and complicated"...

Or VMS-sama..."do you know who I am? I am too "Unix-like!""

But...let us all hope, for our continuing existence, that a rather full-o-holiday-and-glad-to-be-alive-cheer Multics-sama doesn't decide to show up with her entourage of Multicians O______O
