Oh no,.... now you've done it!!!!!!!   ^V^
(Oh, how I wish I could just jump to the shading part in my tutorial.... ;___;)

*RUMBLE RUMBLE RUMBLE*

SUPERNOVA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  ^V^

*C-chan explodes cosmically*

NejinOniwa

Oh, damnit C-Chan! Look what you did to my Death Star!!! The Empress is going to be furious with me... >.>

...

eh.

And WAH! Unix-sama is HEAR! ALL HAIL!!!
*hail*
Ow! Bad hail, bad hail!
(bad puns yar)

Oh and, what's the leafy-ish thing in her hair?

Ahem...she's been here for a while :)

Too early to start a Unix-sama related pseudo-religion? Unix-sama-ism?

But seriously, I ain't looking forward to shading my pic...Maybe I'll go back to my Ubuntu-tan pic and work on that for practice.

Whist many a mortal hath vector-sketched the Goddess, few among us can find a way to shadith Her. -The book of Unix-sama-ism

Cause she'll cane us if we don't do 'er justice (Yeah I really need to get to sleep XD)

QuoteOh and, what's the leafy-ish thing in her hair?

That's a horned-owl ear!

C-Chan

*reclaims pieces back from the distant cosmos*

Thank you, Sister Bella-san, for imparting the ways of the GODDESS to yonder mortal.... -v-

[to NejinOniwa]  REPENT!!!!!!!!  REPENT FOOLISH MORTAL, FOR THOU HATH INSULTETH THE GODDESS UNIX-SAMA WITH THINE CLUELESSNESS OF HER EARS!!!   REPENT!!!!!!  REPENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  BOW, NO, GROVEL BEFORE THE GODDESS, AND PURIFY THYSELF WITH THIS CHALICE OF HOLY WATER.....

*tosses vial of sulfuric acid to NejinOniwa*

[back to Bella] Yeah, I'm all for a pseudo-religion, in case that wasn't obvious before.  ^^'

NejinOniwa

*tosses multiple vials of sodium hydroxide at pig* Oh yeah?? Just try beating me in chemistry, would you!!! And besides, all the very few religion points in me have already gone to Suzumiya-sama, so no hope there ^^

But the pig still broke my death star! Agh!
YOU COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS

C-Chan

Oh right, I did..... ^^'

Just make sure Bella-sama doesn't finish shading the UNIX-sama, cause then the explosion will destroy the SECOND Death Star I know you're working on (makes me wonder where you get all the money to build it... -v-)

Speaking of which, I look forward to your work shading Ubuntu, Bella-sama.  ^__^
For any questions,... you know you can always ask the pig.  Don't overlook the pig's willingness to impart all that he knows onto thee.  ^.^

*worships Unix-sama*

THAT, I can help you with, NejinOniwa!

I may just shade it in PS (or at least over large areas)....It wouldn't be so hard, but I'm trying to stay with the soft shading...

But I also have a project planned where I'm just going to be doing regular, flat shading...

NejinOniwa

Ah, ah, I suffer with yan, bellssu...Shading is too much work and I'm just lazy cuz school just started. -v-

Awww, you're still holding back on shading in Inkscape.  I'm telling you, it's very intuitive once you see how you can do it.  ^___^

Admittedly, I'm at much at fault since I always complain about shading as well, though not necessarily because of Inkscape.  Tell you what, I'm gonna get to work on shading The Sleep's OS/2-tan immediately (or at least when I return from work), and if I can get it done within two days, you'll give it a go as well?  ^.^

Bella

Here's a screenshot of Ubuntu-tan:

I could have done worse, I think ;)

Soft-shading is tough on Inkscape... o_o

C-Chan

Fufu... despite the fact that I only kept half my promise (again), you went ahead and shaded Ubuntu-san in Inkscape anyway.  That's why I always say that Bella-san is such a "bella".  ^.^

The actual presentation is good and really does a lot of justice to your traditional style of shading and highlighting.   ^^
However, I'd have to check out your original SVG file just to gauge the efficiency of it and make sure you're not doing any double-work that might be contributing to the difficulty.

One technique I've developed recently (especially with OSR 2.5-sama) is to make the path the color of the shading, and simply draw on the highlight to it, rather than the other way around as I demonstrated in that obsolete tutorial (with 3.1-sama).  I do know that using strokes for highlights is faster, but not sure if the resulting effect is what you're looking for.  On her Ubuntu armbands, for example, we could probably try employing a radial gradient instead to give it a more metallic look.

I'm almost positive I am ;)

I've got no idea how to post/send SVGs, though....

I did a few different techniques (if you can call it that) for the shading...
I can't really explain it very well, you can pick apart the SVG when I send it...

NejinOniwa

And this fine buntu gives me a nice feeling. ^_^

Thanks :D

Here's a newer screenshot, I've been messing around w/ gradients:

And I fixed the color on her armbands ;)

Aurora Borealis

That Ubuntu-tan looks fantastic! What techniques are you using for shading?

As for me, I don't know how to shade in Inkscape and always have to export to Photoshop to do that -_-
