QuoteRemind me again what you used to create your first Pu-chan pic, plus 64 Studio. Was that by hand or through the photo editor? '__'

That was Picture It (photo editior).

Quote*snicker*
I had worked on 3D editing years ago, so I didn't really think the same thing given I had worked with far worse things. -v-
However, Illustrator and Photoshop's vector tools did leave me with a bad impression of what vector graphics are and can do. ^^;

You know what I think put me off? I remember once reading a tutorial on DeviantArt about how do do hand-made (in PS) vector art O___O

QuoteIt is very fun, no? More sculpting that drawing actually, and very conducive to the Anime style.

;010
QuoteThere we go. ^v^
Have I told you tonight how much of a hot-mama VMS-sama is? ^>^
And vectorized she's absolutely, positively, vehemently, astoundingly stunning! ^v^
It oozes with strength,... power,... sharpness, like the teeth of her cleaver,.... AND it's not even half done! @o@
I know you said you wanted to color in PS, but I can assure you that applying the color in Inkscape can yield a similar look to what you have on now. Course it's all a matter of practice really -- the one benefit in PS is that you can make the lines variable-width much more easily than in Inkscape (which requires a clever trick to imitate the appearance). ^__^

This VMS-sama is a perfect example of how she would look like living in the fringes, struggling in a world almost alien to the one she grew up in and mastered, but still clutching to the hope that her bloodline will carry on. I'm glad you opted for the silver hair streak idea after all -- that, coupled with the fierce single eye peering through, adds an incredible sense of drama and depth to her experession that, if one isn't careful, could send chills down the spine! @v@

Her clothing is both cool and elegant, certainly happy to see it again after that cool sketch you did shortly before you left. The picture of NT-tan she's clutching in her gloved hands is tearjerking.

I'm literally floored by this,... and if I'm not swooning now it's only because I promised to hold all my swooning till the end of the presentation. At this rate, I'll be knocked out for a whole week. ^v^

Seriously, if this is the new art direction your're going with, I feel the sun will shine brighter tomorrow morning. ^___^

Thanks! I forgot to tell the title, "So Close, So Far Away".

Symbolizes how although NT and VMS are so closely linked, yet so incredibly different, and how this is a very unknown fact...

QuoteNot sure if you sketched first then traced the lineart in Inkscape (I personally sketch in Inkscape directly), but in the event you go that route, don't forget that the "Trace Bitmap" function helps vectorize the lines in your sketchwork, thus making them fully scalable.

Yep I sketch first. I'll have to try that!

QuoteWell anything with Miggy-san and 2.0-chan is bound to be adorable, but you had already drawn one before no? '__'

Oh well, as a wise person once said....

"The world can never haveth too much Miggy." --The Book of C-chan, 54:3,15

I want to try a vectorized one XD

QuoteThis one is striking, in that the style is unlike any you've done before. More Anime than manga, and clearly a precursor to the vector drawing of VMS-sama you did above. ^__^

Now that you mention it, I also started dabbling in a 2,0-chan picture the other day to break up some artist block. Since I don't have her body done yet, perhaps I can use this uniform instead to add some variety. ^__^

Excellent work with this one! ^^

Yup, this is the pic where I reached the proverbial "end of my rope" with non-vector work heehee. I actually am working on reverse vectorizing it...

QuoteNot sure what the thing in the lower corner is. -.-

Why, Sailor Vistan of course!

QuoteGyaaah! Your sketches are getting more sophisticated with each passing drawing! ^^
I really have no clue what you're talking about, but maybe it's cause I'm too distracted seeing the awesome and dynamic rendition of Leopard and iPhone-tan. ^^
Plus the easter candy on the side,...

[I think I see PU-CHAN there!!!!! ^V^]

On the left is a comic idea. Okay, I won't mince words...back this spring Steve Jobs made a joke that him and Mr. Gates had "been married in secret for the last decade" during an interview. This it the OS-tan's reaction to that joke XD (Mac and 95-tan are angered, Tiger-tan and Saseko are happy, Homeko and Cheetah-tan are getting a little close with Homeo, XD

QuoteI can't really decipher XP Tablet-tan at this resolution, but I'm confident you can squeeze every last ounce of cute out of her design concept. ^___^

She's going to have some tattoos based on...I don't want to give it away :P

QuoteIf they're wearing nothing but those flags, I'd be watch where you'd step if I were you. Knowing our local demographic, that's gonna make for a lot of nosebleeds. ^_______^

XD

QuoteAh hell, I'll say it anyway.... -v-

INSTANT WIN!!!!!!!!!! ^V^

I'm actually kinda sad that I've neglected ZX-tan so much, especially since (according to my original schedule), she was destined to have a nice full-sized pic not long after her chibi was done.

I've always wanted to draw a fashion disaster ;)

QuoteOkay, can I say INSTANT WIN three times? no?

Oh alright, I won't abuse....

I'll just switch to a different colloquialism.... ^___^

YOU WIN AT THE INTERNETS!!!!!!!!!! ^V^

I think I can distinguish a UNIX-sama in the background (as well as a Pioneer-tan, your Zenwalk-tan, the RedHat sisters, the bratty SCO UNIX-tan,... but I'm gonna have to see this in color definitely. The basic premise is just...... PERFECT!! This hands done wins the award for most potential EPIC MASTERPIECE!!!!!!!!!! ^V^

I was going to give a disclaimer, this is probably the least likely to be colored :...(

Quote9-sama is amazingly sexy in this sketch,... clearly she looks and acts like a former heir to the UNIX throne. ^^
MINIX-tan is actually supposed to be CE-tan sized i think, but otherwise she looks very cute and sassy. ^.^

Hmmm...

QuoteWelcome back, Bella! Haven't seen you here in a long while! And you're back with some new fantastic stuff! Yay!

I too have switched from Photoshop to Inkscape (back in the spring time for me though) and once thought vector graphics were intimidating but I've gotten very efficent with vector graphics and I'm sure you will too!

I had a lot of fun on Inkscape :D Do you do all the coloring and shading on Inkscape, as well?

QuoteYour new rendition of VMS-sama is fantastic and she's got a giant cleaver! (Although I also really like your original "V for Vendetta"-ish rendition too)

Well, I think she's pretty close to the original, just not wearing the trench coat and with a slightly different hairdo.

QuoteThe Miggy + Windows 2.0-tan picture is very heartwarming! *sniffle*

Windows 1.0-tan and 2.0-tan look very nice with new outfits in the next picture! Incidentally, one of the pictures I'm working on now is a group picture of 1.0-tan and 2.0-tan!

Three cheers for Win1.0 and 2.0-tan! They're my personal favorite non NT Win-tans.

QuoteAnd below that is an XP-tan no hacker would want to mess with!

...or no Vistan XD

QuoteAnd the mysterious looking background goes nicely with Odyssey-tan's mysterious personality!

Thanks!

I always see these prototype-tans as wandering around in the dark, along with vampires, ghosts, and all the other "bumps in the night" of the world for some reason O___o

Tsubashi

Oh goodness! Many many many fancy drawings!
So many drawing, but I'm out of time! T_T
I'm really sorry I can't write out all my comments, but I must say that I've always love your drawings, but this is just too much sugoi-ness!!!
*Swoon*

Quotealways see these prototype-tans as wandering around in the dark, along with vampires, ghosts, and all the other "bumps in the night" of the world for some reason O___o

Ah! Maybe that's why Odyssey-tan is my favorite M$-tan ^.^
-Tsu

Bella

QuoteAh! Maybe that's why Odyssey-tan is my favorite M$-tan ^.^

She's one of my faves too :D Something interesting about a Win-tan separated from her sisters and her company.

But I love all the NT-tans. Except for the Vistans ;018 (a case of getting personal feelings mixed with OS-tans)

C-Chan

QuoteYou know what I think put me off? I remember once reading a tutorial on DeviantArt about how do do hand-made (in PS) vector art O___O

Ah yeah, that'd do it.... ^^;

QuoteThanks! I forgot to tell the title, "So Close, So Far Away".

Symbolizes how although NT and VMS are so closely linked, yet so incredibly different, and how this is a very unknown fact...

*sniffles*  Now you're making me cry.... ;^___^;

I mean...

*sniffs*

I've got something in my eye!  ;^v^;

*runs into hiding place and starts bawling*

QuoteYup, this is the pic where I reached the proverbial "end of my rope" with non-vector work heehee. I actually am working on reverse vectorizing it...

Should probably note that trace bitmap also works with color (although the resulting vector shape may be a little top-heavy file size wise.... ^^;
On the other hand, you probably could do a better job just vector tracing it by hand instead.  That's what I did when I helped out with that Wii-tan sketch that one time.  ^^

QuoteOn the left is a comic idea.

Oh, I see now... I think.... ^__^'
But in any event, the pairings, now that I know who they are, are hilarious!  ^v^
(especially with Cheetah-tan + Homeo,... oh the poor boy.... ^____^)

Just...........

<___<

>___>

Um,....

Don't tell anyone I confused PU-chan with Homeo.... ^^;
That would............. destroy my reputation and all......... ^v^;

QuoteI've always wanted to draw a fashion disaster

Well anything you draw looks ready to be showcased over a catwalk, so good luck... ^.^

QuoteI was going to give a disclaimer, this is probably the least likely to be colored :...(

GAAAAAAAAAAAH!!! >o<

*C-chan dies*

QuoteI had a lot of fun on Inkscape  Do you do all the coloring and shading on Inkscape, as well?

*C-chan is resurrected*

But of course.... ^___^

They say the proof is in the pudding, so I give you two flavors:

1) PCLOS (which you already have

and

2) http://ostan-collections.net/downloads.php?cat=7 (look for the XP + Mac OS9.2 I made,... that or the Amiga Ball tutorial... ^__^)

Bella

Here's a latest look at VMS-sama:

Added after 1 minutes:

Still not done, though!

And I'm also working on a couple of pics I want to vector sketch...like that "me, myself and i" pic and a picture of...

It's a surprise!

C-Chan

*sniffles*

So beautiful.... ;^___^;

Oh WHY oh WHY did Bella-sama leave just when she was discovering Inkscape?! ^0^

It's especially important now to have a helping hand around... *worries frets* ...hopefully she'll save often.  ^___^

*stares at VMS-sama and swoons*

NejinOniwa

Whoa!? Sugo! How the hell did i miss this!?
*swoon*
YOU COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS

Alfamille

Nice sketches Bella! Considering I really like the second iPhone+Leopard-tan. :)

Bella

I've done a few new drawings!

Ubuntu-tan, the original sketch and digital one done as practice in Vector art...alas, I got too ahead of myself doing a Unix-sama picture...(and this was all done in Inkscape...but I tell you, I'm looking forward to 0.46's bitmap-like fill tool)

*Please standby as I upload and post more pix*

Added after 8 minutes:

RSX11-sama and young VMS-chan!

In my little backstory, swordsmanship is a talent taught among the DEC family. RSX11-sama and her daughter, are in fact, not fighting, but practicing so that someday she will become a competent warrior :)

Added after 14 minutes:

The many faces of Linux-sama:

I'll elaborate on any questions later....

left: Neptune-tan Right: Me, Myself, and i:

Unix-sama...I started to do a vector sketch of this pic, but was unsatisfied and went "back to the drawing board" XD

I know The Queen Mother is supposed to be wheelchair-bound and all, but I wanted to show her in a moment of strength and determination...

C-Chan

Well I kinda ran outta time a little, but my reaction now would be no less different.... ^__^

*C-chan starts to rumble*

I promise to be back to shower praise on you once I've finished reassembling myself.  ^.^;

*C-chan starts to rumble louder*

[Braveheart-style]  AWEEEEEEESOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  ^V^

*C-CHAN EXPLODES!!!!!!!!!!*

Added after 14 hours 12 minutes:

*C-chan reassembles a la T1000, and passes through some radiation scrubbers*

There we go, good as new.  ^__^

*glows green*

......................................Someone give me a hug...! ^.^

In any event, time to judge Picassa's latest and greatest.  ^___^

QuoteUbuntu-tan, the original sketch and digital one done as practice in Vector art...alas, I got too ahead of myself doing a Unix-sama picture...(and this was all done in Inkscape...but I tell you, I'm looking forward to 0.46's bitmap-like fill tool)

Awesome!  Did I tell you yet how proud I am of you to have faced your fears and given this vector thingie a try?  ^___^

Not sure how far you've gotten learning all the features, but at first the art style looks and feels a little limiting compared to a richer, deeper hand-drawn equivalent,... at times, maybe even almost American-Saturday-Morning-Cartoon-Post-1998 quality.  ^^

What especially gives Anime cel drawing its distinctive look is shading, so I'd be very interested to see how you go about applying shading and highlighting to Ubuntu-san.  I'm hoping to begin my Inkscape tutorials tomorrow (originally to help Alfamille, but will likely post them up at the Wiki as a resource for everyone), but maybe you might be interested in an earlier one-shot tutorial I made that shows how to carve out some flat shading quickly and easily:

http://ostan-collections.net/post-18847.html#18847

Admittedly, that one's in desperate need of modernization, but I'll take care of it later.  ^.^'

QuoteRSX11-sama and young VMS-chan!

WAI!!!!!!!!!  ^V^
I never imagined I'd meet someone who would draw an RSX11-tan, but here she is in the flesh!  ^___^
Not only is the sketch itself worthy of hat-tipping, but I really admire how classy you made RSX-sama (you SURE you're not a fashion designer masquerading as a photographer?  `v').  You definitely do justice to the older and classic time periods of OS history, back when men were men, mice were mice, and OS-tans were all strong and courageous pioneers.  (The rapier battle also gives it a distinct "Utena" feel, btw)  ^v^

It's definitely wonderful that you honor your favorite NT-based Windows-tans by literally CRAFTING a lineage for them -- that way, even if not entirely true, you can philosophically state that your OS can trace it's roots back 40 years ago (much like Linux users can say about their own OS).  ^^

Now I'm interested to know if you're willing to draw RSX-sama's DEC sisters.  I know it might be asking a lot, since we start getting into an area of computing that becomes increasingly less-documented.  Still, I imagine its been a great learning experience studying about all these systems you may or may not have known about earlier.  ^____^

BTW, in case I never showed you this before, this non-Unix timeline helped me a lot in coming up with the Annex storylines:

http://www.oshistory.net/metadot/index.pl?id=2188;isa=CMSDocument;op=show

QuoteThe many faces of Linux-sama:

In case you were wondering why I blew up.  ^.^

I especially love how well you married all the concepts we've tossed around here in OSC.... a young, timid Linux-chan with Minix-sensei,... the standard Futaba rendition representing the earlier versions,... Juzo-kun's rendition representing the modern, more established and much better funded Linux-sama.

I know I loved the Beryl outfit when I first saw it, and as Darknight surmized, it wouldn't go very well with the more "conservative" *nix-tans.  ^.^'
But her diplomatic uniform was a pleasant surprise, and a hit with this pig definitely.  ^__^
In that uniform, she uses with power and confidence perhaps more so than her battle armor! ^v^

Wearing that, one definitely concludes that,... come hell or high water,.... she truly is destined to become Unix-sama's official successor.  ^.^

QuoteI'll elaborate on any questions later....

Question #1:  You ARE gonna color at least this one,..... riiiiiiiiiiight?  ^__^'

Question #2:  How come you can't color the *Nix reunion pic you posted a few weeks ago?  If it's due to time constraints, you know I'd always be willing to help.  ^___^
Maybe we can get other people on board to pitch in, so we can make it our first truly massive group effort.  ^^
(On the other hand, maybe we shouldn't hold our breath on that....  ^.^)

Quoteleft: Neptune-tan Right: Me, Myself, and i:

Admittedly, after seeing all that win, this actually looked a bit more down to earth than usual.  '__'
Still, Neptune looks great and the time-paradox-inducing picture of the Leopard-chans looks adorable.  ^^

However, I'd brace for impact in case the universe destroys.  ^____^;

QuoteUnix-sama...I started to do a vector sketch of this pic, but was unsatisfied and went "back to the drawing board" XD

I know The Queen Mother is supposed to be wheelchair-bound and all, but I wanted to show her in a moment of strength and determination...

Don't worry about that,... like I said before, the wheelchair thing is more a mentally-induced thing -- she can actually walk and in fact does so quite often (although no one dares bring that up to her... ^__^; ).

Now then,... and a 1,... and a 2,.... ^.^

.........

WORSHIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  ^V^

*gets down on dirt and GROVELS before might of classic UNIX-sama*

I'm MUST beg for the vector art, to see what's wrong and how it can be fixed.  *v*
It is my destiny to help you get this masterpiece drawn, and drawn to impress!  *V*

And I can't take no for an answer. ^__^

*keeps groveling*

Well this isn't supposed to be a great masterpiece. I (hand)drew this in like five minutes, mostly to vectorize and learn the different controls and stuff before tackling "major" projects like Unix-sama ;) That said, I'll probably try to get as far as I can in inkscape, though I might give in and do larger areas of shading in PS -__-

QuoteWAI!!!!!!!!! ^V^

I'd love to draw some more DEC-tans! I'd like to be to this fairly-unknown Massachusettsan family of high-end server/mainframe/workstation OS-tans what you were to Vintage-tans, Kami-Tux to uncommon and open-source-tans, or Aurora to Mac-tans ^_^

As a whole, I see the family as noble but a bit fringe...claiming themselves to be casual followers of some of the teachings of Unix-sama, but never really struggling to prove it, or conversely, clashing with other Unix and like-tans. They live(d) and trained in an old Woolen Mill (DEC HQ), handing down a legacy of swordsmanship.

In fact, yesterday I read about DEC's implementation of BSD Unix, Ultrix (Who I suppose would be a step-sister to VMS-san). She practically designed herself:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultrix

Physically, I see her as a wavy-haired dark brunette, wearing a slinky, tight black dress (as a nod to BSD devilette). Her weapon is a trident, with blades instead of spears on the end (again, a nod to BSD and the sword tradition of DEC).
She a bit vengeful (since Ultrix is latin for Avenger), and gets in constant conflicts with VMS-san and the other DEC-tans about weather or not they're Unix-like. And, in leisure time, she enjoys skiing trips in New Hampshire (cause Ultrix was the one that started the whole "Live Free Or Die" motto in Unix, and, NH is a popular skiing locale for Mass tourists ;) )

In fact, here's a pic I drew:

Top left, is VMS-san and Ultrix arguing about who's the real Unix-like...

Middle, lower: Ultrix-tan getting ready for an NH ski trip (a little NH injoke working here, about some of our native's interesting fashion sense ;) )

Right: Ultrix-tan in battle gear.

QuoteIt's definitely wonderful that you honor your favorite NT-based Windows-tans by literally CRAFTING a lineage for them -- that way, even if not entirely true, you can philosophically state that your OS can trace it's roots back 40 years ago (much like Linux users can say about their own OS). ^^

:D It is my way to honor a Windows OS that has been so...nice to me XD If it wasn't for NT, I'd still be a anti-Windows zealot (Hacchan drove me to it...phew!)

QuoteBTW, in case I never showed you this before, this non-Unix timeline helped me a lot in coming up with the Annex storylines:

http://www.oshistory.net/metadot/index.pl?id=2188;isa=CMSDocument;op=show

That's great! Now I must draw a RSTS/E ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSTS/E ) and DOS/Batch 11-tan ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOS/BATCH_11 )! I can just imagine an DOS/batch 11-tan/Unix-sama scene where she slips and calls the Goddess "Unix-chan" (since they're around the same age) and, well, DOS/Batch 11-tan gets her butt kicked XD

I can see DOS/Batch 11 as quite young-looking herself, a difficult personality (perhaps moreso than Unix-sama, but with less usefulness), with a somewhat short lifespan (cause use dropped dramatically in 1973). I invision her as a slightly crazy type, who perhaps started the DEC blade tradition by carrying a butcher knife around to threaten people (which mostly just bewildered the hell out of folks)...nobody was that sad to see her die, aside from her immediate family.

In fact, here's a very quick sketch:

RSTS/E-tan should, maybe, be a dog-girl (cause from what I gather, RSTS/E's mascot is a bulldog), or at least be somewhat short and tomboyish with a tough streak. Physically, I think she'd have short, choppy hair, and wear a spiked chocker.

C'mon the DEC-tans design themselves ;)

QuoteIn case you were wondering why I blew up. ^.^

Thanks! I drew Minix-sensei larger than Kami-tux's, but tried to keep to her design...the teenage Linux-san is the usual version, and the current one is like Juzo-kun's. The diplomatic uniform is in fact the one I drew in my first VMS/Linux-san battle pic :) And as you can see, Beryl/Compiz is really annoying SCO Unix-tan and Minix-sensei (cause I think Linux-sama is one of the first *nixes to not only flaunt her smarts, but also her looks...)

QuoteQuestion #1: You ARE gonna color at least this one,..... riiiiiiiiiiight? ^__^'

Mostly I thought it was lacking detail. So I sketched it out to have more "movement" and detail...

Patience!!!

Oh, and, totally unrelated, but any ideas for ReactOS's background? All I know is that it's a wannabe WinNT clone or something O__o

C-Chan

*ponders*

I only know of Kami-Tux' rendition of ReactOS-tan:

http://ostan-collections.net/viewtopic.php?p=18685&search_id=828225469#18685

Bottom line is that she tries REALLY hard to be like 2K-tan without getting herself sued.  ^^;
I'd kinda imagine she'd be like,... you, kinda.  ^___^
Open minded about other systems, but still very kind and reverent to the NT family.  ^___^

Now forgive me if I take a while to write a response to your massive DEC winnage and co., but....

I've seen Kami-Tux's version (another I'd really love to do a rendition of!)

Yeah...she does sound like me XD

What spurred my question was this (in the timeline of non-Unix OSes):

And then I thought, why haven't they been sued? XD
