Hmmmm....OSS for Windows...that's a good site!
I'll have to look through there and see if there's any anti-spyware programs...

If I was braver, or still had my grandma's computer to use as a test subject, I'd try one of those window manager replacements XD

C-Chan

Funny how I switch windows managers left-and-right in Linux, but never dared do the same in XP.  Guess I'm not alone, ne?  ^^

GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!  ^V^

GOT MESELF A NVIDIA 8500GT!!!!!!!!!  ^____^

Admittedly having trouble installing it on my current system, but given how much experimental crap I've filled it with I'm not surprised if I broke something along the way.

But...........

Tried it on a fresh, clean PCLinuxOS liveCD, and ZOMG!!!!!!!!!!!  @o@

The most beautiful, fast, clean and crisp Beryl session I've seen in my life!!!!!!!!!!  ^V^

Now THIS is the system I've always dreamed of!  ^______^

So tomorrow I'm gonna initiate a long overdue reinstallation (not just because of this, but I also want to restructure everything so that my /usr and /home directories are stored in separate partitions).  After months of suffering with that infernal ATI, at long last I will know peace..... ^.^

And next stop after that.....

Compiz-Fusion..................!! ^v^

Congrats!

Whaaaa!! Don't tell Shadow "I can run Linux with an AMD 64 CPU and an ATI card" K8 that!

*really, that's K8's new name*

C-Chan

K8Shadow....?  @__@

............. ¬¬;

Isn't that like,... you know.....  like.......... a Sonic villain?  Â¬__¬;

No, it's the model name of my computer XD

(Odd, cause it was marketed a m8611 or something, but the info page calls the model "Shadow K8")

It's stuck as her name now heehee...

Back onto topic, I've been playing around with Puppy on the VM, and it's becoming one of my favorites. Amazing, the bootup is like ten seconds, and it runs incredibly fast :D

Maybe I'll install this into the VM...

*quietly* when I find out how XD

C-Chan

GAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!  >V<

*collapses*

.........

*slowly gets up*

Well that kinda depends.  ^__^'
Do you already have an OS installed in your virtual hard drive?

If so, now would be a great time to test the power of GParted.  ^.^

Otherwise, if it's a completely new install, test out these steps:

C-chan's Guide to Installing Puppy-chan in Virtualbox!!!
====================================================

Step 1:  Open GParted and assign a new label to the Virtual Hard Drive
Step 2:  Create a new partition on the hard drive that's roughly 90%of its size and format it to the EXT3 filesystem.
Step 3:  Format the remaining 10% into Linux Swap.  I doubt you need swap space in a virtual environment, but at least it's good to get used to the concept.  ^__^
Step 4:  Go to the Puppy Installation Wizard, and let it walk you through the steps of installing on your hard drive (don't worry, that would be "virtual" hard drive.  ^.^)
Step 5:  Install Puppy-chan, then shut off the VM and remove the Puppy ISO from the virtual CD drive (you don't want to load back into Puppy LiveCD).
Step 6:  Restart your VM and stare in awe by how uber fast Puppy-chan will load.
Step 5:  ????????????
Step 6:  $$$ PROFIT!!!  *v*

Bella

^

I'll have to do that...tomorrow :D

Go forth and conquer, brave, young pioneer!  ^.^

Bella

I've got it up and running  ;010 I checked, and it saved the changes I made. So everything looks good :)

One last question (for now)....how do I transfer files to and from the VM? Because I made a file shared, but I've got no idea how to access it from within Puppy.

I also enabled USB control, or whatever, but when I plugged in a drive XP mounted it instead. And shortly afterward, XP rejected my USB mouse, until I closed down VirtualBox.

(And no, the CD-R doesn't mount either...But I mostly just want to be able to share files so the latter two don't really matter right now.)

Here's a few VirtualBox screenshots of the settings:

C-Chan

Yay!!  Bella-sama is up and running!!!  ^v^

With only two minor questions that I'm sure we can answer easily.... ^___^

USB Question:

Ummmmmmmmmm,... yeah, I would not recommend putting your USB mouse or USB keyboard in your controller screen since it's not meant for them (the USB mouse works in the VM automatically).  In that screen, I suggest adding the USB drive that XP mounted, and I believe that will allow the Guest drive to detect it.

Puppy Samba Question:   ...........................................How to detect shared folders from Puppy.......................................... I don't know.............. ^^;

*C-chan runs away crying in shame*  ;^0^;

Added after 5 minutes:

*runs back in*

Safest, most sure-fire way of getting files shared between Guest and Host operating systems is to share their folders normally as if they were in a network.  So in Windows you have to designate a particular folder as shared, and from puppy you have to be able to use something to detect Windows shared folder (through Samba).

You can sorta look around for something like this:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=3814

The VirtualBox Shared Folder function never really quite seems to work for me, but if it's anything like with Parallels or VMWare, it's essentially just automating that file sharing thing for you, so there's no difference at all which approach you use.

On the other hand, messing with network shared folders can be a pain, so if you can get the USB drive added to the controller, I think you'll avoid some much undesired headaches.... ^.^'

Bella

^ I think I may have gotten it to mount a CDR....

But I have to find a blank one to put some files on to test it out...

C-Chan

Uhhhhhhhhh,......  ^^';

If you don't mind me clarifying........... that's just to test, right?  ^___^;

Cause you know............ the last thing I want is for you to shuttle files around on CDRs,... heck, even a CDRW would probably be a little awkward.... ^.^'

In any event, do let me know when you get your USB stick (or HD) read from the virtual drive.  ^^

Bella

Here's the odd part...it would mount a liveCD (IE, it would show the files), but not a normal CDRW with a image file on it.

Yeah, it was mostly to test O__o

Heeeerrrre's Danny!
Well, I'm back from my 3 month hiatus, and I'm still using Linux... remarkable.  In my time away, I've found that I actually favor KDE over GNOME.  I'm considering a total strip-down and possibly removal of GNOME from my Ubuntu.  So yeah, I need help getting my programs (particularly media-related programs) narrowed to just a few I need for full-functionality (in other words, a progam that can handle all plugins and hopefully work with firefox without sucking).  Thanks in advance and I'm looking forward to catching up with all you guys again.
cheers,

Yesirreebob!! IDK is back!!  ^v^

Now then, I know we already covered Kaffeine, but how about a bigger grocery list of the stuff you use?  ^.^
