*latches onto Bella*

*squeals with happiness*  You're back here too!!  ^v^
I have to say you're one of the most enthusiastic Linux initiates I've seen here, so it's a definite pleasure for me to discuss it with you.  ^.^

QuoteSAM says the external HD is read-only, so it can't write any files on it. It also says in order to do an installation, I'll have to format on the external HD (or look for a partition or something...). Which is kinda not good cause that's mainly a backup drive.

Hmmm..... you know..... if it can read it BUT it says it's read-only..................

*ponders*

......

*light bulb*

そうだ! ^V^

I bet your external HD is formatted as NTFS!  ^__^
(you did use it in XP first, after all...)  ^.^

*sigh*  If only SAM and PCLOS came preinstalled with GParted, we could probably determine very easily what file system it uses and what mount point it's alloted.... ^.^

(Gparted is available to download from the repository, but not sure if you're connected some other way to the net.  -.-)

But if I am correct, then we should probably consider changing it to FAT32 since the data really doesn't need to be stored in any other format.  (FAT32 is the same filesystem type found in all USB hard drives and in older Windows installations, so it's pretty compatible with everything.)

If you're ever interested let me know, as we still have to mount a special operation to make sure the data that's already in there is transferred out temporarily before any conversion can be made.  -v-

QuoteI guess I should look into getting flash drive : \

Don't be too sad,... USB flash drives are the floppies of the 21st century, so they're pretty handy to have around regardless of whether you need it at this time or not.  ^__^
Nowadays you can get a 2gig one for as little as $20USD.

QuoteOn the bright side, I can get onto and out of SAM without shutting down. Only hibernating.

Oh, did it already have the ACPI settings on your machine enabled?  Or did you decide to open up that beautiful PCLinuxOS ControL Center tool?  ^____^
(that thing is very Mac-like -- clearly one of the highlights of SAM/PCLOS)

QuoteNo, I still have to go into the BIOS.
Easy, I have to do is press DEL on startup, voila, select CD drive, and it's a go.

Fufu.... better than nothing I suppose.  ^.^
But sounds like you can also go to the regular BIOS setup screen to give the CD/DVD drive a higher boot priority.

On the other hand, since you just got your beloved K8 back from the shop, you probably will want to go easy on her for at least a couple more days.  -v-

QuoteHumpf. I like surfing on my porch XD

Ha!  Me too!  ^__^
I just... wheel in the 50ft-length ethernet cable along with me.  ^___________^;

Quote*covers ears* I'm NOT listening, lalalala...

But the HP works great. The Compaq's I've known (two) have both been quite annoying :\

If it's any consolation, they were better than Gateways.... ^.^

*snicker snicker*
*chortle chortle*
*chuckle chuckle*

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!  ^V^

But now that you mention it, I still recall that Packard Bell was another popular brand in those days.  I don't remember anymore if they were good or not, but I recall that our first 2 PCs were Packard Bell, so just from bias alone I guess I can say they were "'ight".  ^___^

Quote*Cries like schoolgirl* Skydome...and Magic Fire...and transparency...and all these things that have gotten my Windows-centric friends/family to take a sudden interest in Linux...

Yup, that MUST be Beryl.

Someone once said that Beryl has done more to push Linux into the mainstream than any other feature beforehand.  Probably a simplistic statement, but true in some ways since presentation features very heavily in this business.  (otherwise, why make glitzy ads and special effects-ridden movies?)

If you do get around to making your own Skydome image, let me know so you can teach me.... ^.^
(fufu... haven't had the time to do it myself, so I just use one I got from kdelook.org.... -v-;)

Don't forget the other cool features, such as the Expose, the zoom-in on demand, the negative on demand, the transparency on demand, etc.  Obviously the developers had fun with it, as there's TONS of things to change and experiment with Beryl.  ^.^

QuoteI love the dock, I haven't tried Frozen Bubble, though.

The Dock and widgets (have you seen the widgets yet?) are SAM linux exclusives and not available in PCLOS.  In fact, while PCLOS is designed to be as clean and conservative a platform as possible (right down to no games being preloaded), SAM is designed to be bold and pioneering despite the lighter Xfce desktop.

Hence the abundance of games (and exciting ones, not the boring regular mini-games that come not just in Windows, but yes, also in almost all other Linux distros), desktop eyecandy, and even preinstalled Wine apps (noticed a few familiar names in the System Menu)?  ^___^

The drawback to the Dock is that it's still experimental, so any changes that you need done on it has to be done through boring configuration files.  (no drag and drop and beautiful right-click menus like in the MacOSX Dock)  Still, this is a work in progress and hopefully will improve in time.  ^___^

And Frozen Bubble is very CUTE and surprisingly polished.  ^.^
(I also like Flobopuyo and SuperTUX)
If you ever get hooked on it, maybe one day we can figure out a way to play a match online.  ^__~

QuoteK8'll wait for that apology

*throws self onto ground*

I'M NOT WORTHY!!! I'M NOT WORTHY!!!!!  ;^V^;
Forgive my eMachine doubting, oh Great Beryl-running, Bella-san Impressing Wonder Machine!  ;^___^;

*stares at Acer*

[@Acer] You sicken me now.... T__T

NejinOniwa

Quote from: "C-Chan"Come to think of it, I don't recall Neiji-san ever updating me on his own problem. Shouldn't be that long till he travels to the states... -v-'

Senpai...
Reason being since I've been away from all what civilization is since then, and then now I'm just home for a brief 4-hour repacking of stuff and then off for two more. So I don't have much time really -.-
But with all due respect, will you EVER learn to write my name properly? It's Nejin, not Neiji, Neji, Neij or anything else, and thatssu itssu!
I'll be flying to New York on the 27:th of JULY, though, so it's a whole month left. Don' worreyssu - I'll have some 2 weeks for that to spare on working up my linux skills and cd's to top notch. Now I just have another hour or something left, though - then I'll have to drag me sister (who is coming with me, with some obnoxious friend of hers) to the station for a 5-hour train ride. This WILL be the last you see of me in two weeks - 12 days of sailing does NOT have any handy PPC's lying around. After that though I'll be having time for all the nice electronics stuff again...

Also i won a football game yesterday. Ha.
YOU COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS

C-Chan

*tsk tsk tsk*

You're not thinking 4th dimensionally, d00d.... ^__^
"Neiji" just flows off the tongue better, like a fine wine.  ^.^
And "Nejin" sounds like something a Me-tan would wield.  ^v^

(Haha!  Just kidding... ^.^)

In any event, that sounds like a plan!  ^-^
Have fun, and congratulations on your victory!

Tsubashi

Ah, interesting. So Nejin-san is a nickname particular, ne? ^-^
...and no PowerPC's? How about Intel's? ^v^

Anyways, on topic now, I had an interesting brush with SAM yesterday. I followed the banner link and burned a liveCD. I rebooted, bubbling with enthusiasm (since you both speak so highly of it). Went through the whole configuration wizard thing and... guess what?
it plopped me into terminal mode!
A nifty looking terminal, but terminal nonetheless.
So I decided to poke around, maybe try to find out what happened... when the screen blanks out. Momentarily, of course, but then it happened again... and again. Within 90 seconds, the window server restarted more than ten times!

Weird, ne? I was disappointed, I wanted to see it!
-Tsu

C-Chan

Fufu... reminds me of the first time I loaded SAM up in my stupid Acer.  -v-

Before you can list your system specs here (particularly the make, the CPU, and the graphics card model), try loading up SAM again and on the LiveCD selection screen pick out "SafeVesaMode".

Just a hunch.  ^.^

Bella

QuoteI bet your external HD is formatted as NTFS! ^__^
(you did use it in XP first, after all...) ^.^

That must be it...

Well, I've figured out how to at least get files off of SAM (CompactFlash card borrowed from digital camera XD)

QuoteOh, did it already have the ACPI settings on your machine enabled? Or did you decide to open up that beautiful PCLinuxOS ControL Center tool? ^____^
(that thing is very Mac-like -- clearly one of the highlights of SAM/PCLOS)

Actually, on "shutdown" it doesn't shut down...but I press the power button, and K8 hibernates.

QuoteFufu.... better than nothing I suppose. ^.^

I spoke too soon. K8 does boot onto the CD by default O__o

Bwah!
My friend: "Whoa! get it to spin again!"
Me: "30-some-year Unix heritage, top-notch virus offense and open source architecture and this is your favorite feature?"

My favorite window feature is the magic fire @__@

eMachines may not be built particularly well, but they Bygod get things done!

Tsubashi

Yeah, I tried doing that before. Same thing happened even when booting into terminal. I guess it just doesn't like my to intels ^^'
Do they have a PPC version? I didn't check.
-Tsu

C-Chan

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa sou sou... ^__^
Forgot it's a Mactel.  I'm sure that's got a little something to do with our boggle...  ^.^

Currently PCLOS and SAM are only i586 compatible.  Normally I'd worry, but since you have your server room, you have like 16 other computers try it out on, right!  ^v^

Tsubashi

That's what I thought too, at first, so I tried it out on my old Compaq, but it did the same thing. I'm going to test it on my newer Linux server, once  I shift all it's functions over to the development server
-Tsu

C-Chan

*nervous*  Yeah.... that'd be a good idea to do.  ^^'
Certainly if it won't work there, then its CD checksum time.  ^v^;

Tsubashi

Ah, yes! I should have done that first, ne?
I usually do, but I was in a hurry ^^'
Gomen nasai

I'd probably better do that now, since it might take me a while to prep the devel server.
-Tsu

C-Chan

I'd cross my fingers if only I had some.  ^___^;
I'll just settle for my tail....  -v-;

*crosses curly tail*

Tsubashi

Well, it passed the checksum, and none of my hardware is in the "Know issues" database, so I wonder what the problem is?

Either way, a linux investigator wants me to try it out on his computer (e-machines I think), so I pray it works ^__^'
Wish me luck!
-Tsu

C-Chan

Fufufu... Bella-san's K8 gave me renewed confidence in eMachines, so I'm confident it will work flawlessly.  ^___^

But the problem is that you don't work on the Linux Investigator's computer perpetually, so once we're done and you've seen SAM-chan strut her stuff, we still have to figure out what the blue blazes is up with your MacTel and Compaq.  To have the exact same problem occur seems suspicious....  -.-

Tsubashi

Well, I've returned with one less LiveCD than I started with, so I suppose it was a success.
I can't say it was flawless, since when we first tried to boot, it failed to mount loopfs, and dropped me into a limited shell (Forgot how limited those things are ^^'). Investigator-san laughed, but it was resolved semi-quickly and we continued on.

First Impressions?
Well, I think it's even more Mac-esque than Zenwalk was. I like the dock-like-thing, though I'm used to Mac Dock, so I expected the apps to bounce ^^'
Beryl looks really nifty, though it crashed a few times on us (His computer specs are lame!)

I didn't get much time to really peruse the OS, since Investigator-san decided to grab the controls at this point and dismiss me ^^'
He needs to set up a swapfile, but oh well. I'll have to do that later ^-^

Now to figure out why it doesn't work on my computers, ne? I want to get it on my Core2Duo and see it's true power! ^o^

Quote*sigh* If only SAM and PCLOS came preinstalled with GParted, we could probably determine very easily what file system it uses and what mount point it's alloted.... ^.^

eh? The version I was using had it (under "System" in the menu, I think)
