QuoteI've been looking at people's various personifications of Vista, including the one that won out of all of them, but I got to thinking, Vista was a pretty good idea, with a better (in theory) interface, better security, etc. Was it really HER fault her programmers were a bunch of Big Brother wanna-be's? Hence this idea, which I doubt I can illustrate properly, but I can at least sketch out:

The tragedy of Windows Vista

Vista started out as the ultimate Windows OS, she was engineered to be smarter, prettier, and more user-friendly then any of her predecessors.

Unfortunately, in the last parts of her development the folks in Redmond removed some of her more cutting edge features and decided to implant a mind-control device in her head, for who-knows-what reason. As such, while Vista would be perfectly happy to be the best OS she can be, when someone back in HQ presses the button, she suddenly can't control the urge to call in and tell them your surfing habits, refuse to play your CD collection, or mess up your wireless router, or any of a number of other things. Vista can't help herself when this happens, and feels terrible about it. She explains that she'll go put on a nice Aero-glass interface and stream some audio to your speakers to help you relax. And then she starts blocking you from running any open-source stuff and can't say why.

XP secretly thinks this is all very funny, and enjoys her 'replacements' frustration with her strange problems, as it keeps people from upgrading away from her, though XP-Tan herself has recently started waking up with odd headaches, no memory of what she last did, and the odd thought that there must be some sort of 'Genuine Advantage' to it all, somehow...

Meanwhile, the Mac-Tans just deepen Vista's emotional problems by calling her the 'poor cousin', and the Linux-Tans don't help by offering their full support...because she gets people interested in THEM...

There are many drawings of Vistans, but nobody's really tried to pin her/their personality(s)...but I think you're off to a pretty good start! I kinda like her psychotic attitude, XD

I thought of a comic where Vistan and Saseko will get into an argument after Vistan attacks someone innocent (Like a program-tan or someone...), and Saseko reads Vistan the riot act ;)

Of course, that could lead to the great 'code quest', where Vista heads out to get rid of the mess that's in her head, and finally cement her position as the ULTIMATE OS-TAN!

As soon as she's done erasing the video card driver...oops, why did she do that?  And the other OS-Tans look on as she yells at someone named 'Bill' who isn't actually there for cursing her life, as XP hides around the corner IM'ing someone to 'make her reject security certificates next!'

Yo Grant_P.  ^__^

That is a very interesting idea, and pretty faithful to the sad reality of that particular OS..  Course, it will also be interesting to see how she interacts with her rivals, say (for example) Ubuntu and Leopard -- since they aren't restricted in the same way, it would be more frustrating to the VIstan if she starts losing substantial ground to the competition.

Indeed there are a ton of Vistans drawn to date, but the Nijiura.com Vistan seems to suit your scenario the best (as far as being in a roll in a serious drama), whereas the popularized "Sailor Fuku" design seems better suited for comedic roles.

So now the million dollar question,... you interested in drawing your idea?  ^____^

She looks... like LINSPIRE-tan!

Hoh,...... you're right.  -.-

That makes her Linspire-tan clone #1,634.....  -v-

I'm certainly going to try!  Even if I can't actually draw well, I may be able to edit an idea.  Here's just a couple concepts I had.  Legal Stuff:  I did NOT draw the base of these, I modified them slightly from Altier Iris 2 and the Yugioh Card Cyber Tutu, respectively.

This does manage to show the rough idea I had for the character.  A multiple layered look (ala Aero).  If you look at the concept pictures, while they go for the cute appearance, sort of like XP, you can see that almost NO skin is exposed (suggesting better security?) and I've made it so that Vista's shoes are totally flat (better stability?), while the entire outfit, with ribbons, tights, skirts, jacket, accessories, etc, like I said, goes for a multi-layered appearance, like the screenshots you see all over the web.

Maybe the headset on one of the concepts is what's letting Redmond see what she sees.  Or the hand weapons make it clear that that process “Will NOT be allowed to continue”.

I'm going to be out for a few days, headed to Florida, but I will check in when I get back!

Got it!  Thanks!  I tried that before, but I see what I did wrong...I was using irc/...

Remember, this is M$. They could sell sand to the Saharans, XD. Eventually lots of people are going to have to buy Vista, mostly with new computers (not that they have to KEEP Vista). Except for new Dells  ;010

Who knows the deviant, psychotic mind that lies under that hilariously innocent Sailor Fuku? But seriously, I think the pictured Vistan would be better as Ultimate edition, and maybe sailor Fuku girl is home premium or something...?

Good ideas  ;010 It's nice to see a new member who enjoys designing OS-tan concepts!

Especially if you go for my idea, where the cute sailor fuku may just be a plot by M$ to get her into a position of trust, and then send a signal to her brain-controller to lock you out if you haven't installed their newest ID theft software.

I like designing stuff, I just don't draw well.

My site is grantpilkay.com if you want to see what I do with toys and a bad camera.

That's cute.  ^__^
Methinks you should be doing Robot Chicken skits.  ^.^

I wonder why there's never been a Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs-tan ever done? Maybe because WinFLP is too close to XP Pro or something....?

I wonder if it's too early to do a Microsoft Origami-tan? Origami is supposedly some sort of ultra small computer....

Then there's the iPhone-tan...

Too many ideas XD

Oh yeah, and sometime I HAVE to make a Mustang Linux-tan ( http://mustang.mccooler.net/ ). I see her as a cowgirl, who's never far from her trusty steed. Cause along with art and computers, horses are a great passion for me ;)

How'd I miss this? Great ideas! ;010

*Move aside other PO'ed OS-tans, their's a new girl in town!*

I'm back from Florida!

Ok, as far as art goes, I've been thinking about it, though not sure how to draw it.

I think Vista in my version would best be done like my sample-concepts, a mix of cute and paranoid.  I figure a sailor fuku-ish appearance, similar to XP, would possibly work, but the outfit should use full tights instead of thigh-highs, and long gloves, so as to expose as little as possible to viruses and malware while still trying desperately to out-cute XP.  Maybe with an odd tendency to change her clothes constantly, along the lines of the 'floating' startup files and obsessive compulsive virus-fears.  Flat shoes, maybe like ballet slippers, indicting 'greater stability', but also maybe meaning that the whole OS is rather 'flat footed' when it comes to more advanced features you'd expect her to have, but she doesn't.  Extra layers like a semi-transparent jacket or over-skirt and lots of ribbons to give a layered Aero look, and a headset like the pink Yugioh girl above, both to monitor her own systems all the time, and to let M$ tap into her brain to find out what she knows.

And to top it all off, some sort of hand weapon that she is rather careless in deploying, in order to 'stop an unauthorized process', even if it means messing something very important up.

Oh, and possibly have Dr. Norton, who's come over to examine her odd behavior, gasping as her hands closed around his neck, asking the other OS-Tans if he has permission to continue.  With everyone yelling "YES!" and XP-Tan saying "Well...maybe...have we thought this through?"

Bella

Good to see you back with more interesting ideas!

I've found as existing design that seems to match what you said pretty closely (sans higher leggings, gloves and headset...)

And I still want to do that comic w/ a Vistan and Saseko...I just can't figure out how to make it NOT sound like I'm self-righteously biased toward XP.
*Cause that wouldn't be me, no...;)*

grant_p

That picture's pretty close, yes!

As to the comic, Simple!  After XP manages to cause Vista to go off crying (and wondering why she suddenly wants to report an mp3 collection to the FBI for some reason) XP happily skips off, knowing at least SHE doesn't have any funny mind-control issues, and will be the most trusted OS forever.

Then she later wakes up with her head pounding, feeling even more bloated then usual, she's installed IE 7 without asking the user first, she can't seem to drop the extra weight (refusal to uninstall IE7) and she can't help but think that there must be some sort of 'Genuine Advantage' to it, so it's not worth investigating...
