This is what the desktop on my experimental desktop looks like at the moment. If you're wondering why Windows 95 is looking so weird in this picture, that's because it's a prototype version from '94 (Microsoft Chicago build 189, to be exact).

It runs pretty well if you strictly use Windows 3.x software with it; it does try to run software designed for the retail version of Windows 95, although it rarely works right from what I've seen so far. It does run better than build 58s, but since this is from later into development, that's to be expected (Also, 58s is a bit weird interface wise. I'll dig up a picture and show it here later).

I've seen Neptune pop up a few times, although I haven't seen Odyssey turn up

I have a copy of Neptune.  If XP still doesn't work out after I upgrade the hard drive in my new laptop to a faster one I'll consider using.  Tho it has issues when you upgrade DirectX...

Yeah. Some believe that Microsoft never even made a prototype of it before that project and Neptune merged to form Whistler, and ultimately, Windows XP.

Also, while on the subject of prototype versions of Windows, here's what Chicago build 58s (The earliest known functional prototype of Windows 95) looks like:



This version looks and feels like some hybrid of 3.11 and 95; having features of both blended into what's best described as Microsoft Chop Suey. Also, being such an early build, it can only handle software designed for 3.x; the stuff actually for Windows 95 is out of it's league (Typically ending in a BSOD of epic proportions).
