Now that you mention it, I can just barely see the power lines running through them. Where/when was that photo taken? And why such an unusual tower design?

On the Oka River in Nizhny Novgorod. They were what you call hyperboloid towers designed by the man himself Vladamir Shukhov for the power company in 1927. The picture's from 1988 a year before the line was rerouted and the towers decommissioned. However, the company still maintains the surviving tower as a monument to Shukov's work. It's twin was illegally demolished by scrappers in 2005.
