i actually installed silverlight to see them.

but now i wonder, what are they used for? are they some sort of skin?

This is part of microsoft taiwan's tech demo for silverlight. Silverlight is being used for cross-platform light weight development. and acts as a programming layer for windows phone 7 and xbox 360.

Fund out that there is also a Hikaru Screensaver for download, " http://www.microsoft.com/taiwan/silverlight/mission_vd.htm " nothing fancy but it looks nice. Seems MS is staring to make good stuff which makes also anime and manga fans happy. I set Hikaru for the logon screen; Nanami is in the media center background.
